Channon: Why Fonte’s an “idiot” and United should stop “whingeing”

Show/hide article…

Manchester United and Southampton go head to head in the EFL Cup final on Sunday - 41 years on from Saints’ most famous day.

Lawrie McMenemy’s Second Division side shocked the football world by beating Tommy Docherty’s much-fancied United 1-0 in the 1976 FA Cup final through the late Bobby Stokes’ goal.

Southampton midfielder Mick Channon and United winger Gordon Hill played in the 1976 final and, ahead of the Wembley rematch, spoke about that day, that goal and this weekend.

HOW DID THE UPSET COME ABOUT?

Channon: “We were all experienced players. You have got to look at it a little bit differently. If there was an inexperienced team, it was Manchester United that day. They were a lot younger than us. We had Peter Osgood, Jim McCalliog, Peter Rodrigues - we had a lot of experience. But if I went to the bookies, I bet Southampton were long odds.”

Hill: “They put out a very strong side and full of experience. When we realised we got Southampton it was a case of, ‘We can’t be complacent’, but I’m afraid we were just a little bit complacent.”

PEOPLE STILL TALK ABOUT STOKES’ GOAL. WAS IT OFFSIDE?

Hill: “I still think it was a fine line. When I look at it into today’s football I would’ve had said yes and, when (United captain) Martin Buchan says he is offside, he pretty much is offside because I trust Martin. But you’ve got to play to the whistle. Bobby put it away, put it where no goalkeeper would have got it and good luck to him. God bless his soul, Bobby.”

Channon: “Who gives a f_*_? Don’t ask me to feel sorry for Manchester United for goodness’ sake. They get more things go their way than any other team in the league, so I certainly don’t feel sorry for them. It may have been level, but you mark my words: Martin Buchan tried to play offside. He was being lazy. We’re talking fractions. He decided to play offside and he got caught and he’s never stopped whingeing since!”

IT WAS QUITE A SHOCK. WHAT WAS THE FALLOUT?

Hill: “We didn’t play a good game. Back then we used numbered cards to call the players off and that day and they put my number, 11, up so I thought, ‘Oh God, I’ve got to walk all across this field’. I was really upset. I looked at the number and the boss, then said, ‘What, me?’ Doc said ‘No, the whole f ** team, one to 11’. We got beaten, Southampton played very well and they got it. Lawrie came to America about three months ago and I had lunch with him. I asked him, ‘When did you know that you’d won the FA Cup?’ He said, ‘Believe it or not, when you got substituted, we knew you were the only danger that could score against us’. Well, that’s marvellous, that.”

Channon: “Ah, Southampton came alive. You wouldn’t believe it. There’s nothing ever been seen like that since. I always remember saying, ‘The only thing that matters in a cup final is winning’, because no-one ever remembers a loser, do they? You always remember the winners of cup finals, you don’t remember the runners-up. Had Manchester United beat Southampton, you wouldn’t have been talking to me now. And Martin Buchan is still whingeing.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT CROP?

Hill: “If Manchester United supporters like what they see, they accept you. I have even mellowed to Jose Mourinho as he says this is a club bigger than anything in the world so you can’t come in and start dictating. I think he has also got the players to buy into his philosophy in terms of what he wants to play. He’s upset a few people on the way but that’s football and you can’t satisfy all these players. Some of them are not going to fit in your plans, even though they are great players.”

Channon: “The game is the same but the people have changed. I am delighted for the players and everything else. Certainly a lot them have worked bloody hard for this and they’re good professionals. Then you get the idiots like (former Southampton captain Jose) Fonte, who wants to leave and not honour his contract. I can’t understand it.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN ON SUNDAY?

Channon: “I think there could well be another trophy to go alongside 1976. It’s a great final - Manchester United playing us, playing Southampton. It’s great for all the fans. You couldn’t wish for a better tie. It is cup football at its best. I’ve got eight season tickets for my kids and everyone else, so I am almost a bloody shareholder in the place! They all enjoy it and when they enjoy it, I do. I hope there will be new heroes.”

Hill: “It will be a completely different game to 1976. It’s even-stevens, even though Southampton are the ‘underdogs’. To me, they are not underdogs because they’ve pulled off some good results. It’ll be a close battle at the weekend and I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a game of chess. I just want to see an open type of game, albeit not necessarily as severe as Manchester City v Monaco!”

Football’s 10 harshest dismissals: where does Claudio Ranieri’s sacking feature?

Show/hide article…

Leicester’s decision to sack title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri has been portrayed as the day football ‘lost its soul’, but harsh sackings are certainly nothing new. In fact, some of Europe’s biggest clubs have achieved great success after dumping their manager in rather distasteful fashion. Where does Leicester’s decision rank?

Matthew Le Tissier: Manchester United shirt excuse ‘worst ever’ for a defeat

Show/hide article…

Southampton legend Matthew Le Tissier has told the “Quickly, Kevin” podcast that Sir Alex Ferguson blaming Manchester United’s grey change strip for a 3-1 defeat in 1996 was “the worst excuse I have ever heard.”

Le Tissier scored as a then-struggling Southampton side stormed into a 3-0 lead against United at their former Dell ground by half-time.

United changed into a blue and white away kit at the break – with Ferguson later claiming the grey shirts had made it hard for his players to see each other in bright conditions – and pulled a goal back.

Le Tissier said he did not notice the change of kit until after the match had finished and added: "I don’t know if any of the other players did, but I didn’t realise until after the game.

“It was only when I was walking to my car in the car park that this one guy stopped me and said: ‘Well done today – just wondering what you thought about Man United changing their kit at half-time?’ I went: ‘Did they?’”

"Let me tell you, if they had won that game 3-0 you wouldn’t have heard a moan from anyone.

“It was the worst excuse I have ever heard for a defeat. Sir Alex Ferguson should be ashamed of himself.”

Southampton meet United again in the EFL final at Wembley on Sunday.

Premier League stars with remarkable big fat zeros to their name this season

Show/hide article…

As you well know, we are big fans of numbers here at Row Zed.

Numbers that tell us something, anyway. We have no shame in admitting that we are truly awful at the Countdown numbers round - in stark contrast to the solid fours and fives we get without fail in the letters game.

So we love getting our hands on and sharing just above every Premier League stat going.

And with action returning to the division this weekend after an FA Cup break, we’ve acquired this incredibly revealing data courtesy of EA SPORTS - which shines a light on some of the most effective (and ineffective) players so far this season.

Let’s get cracking, shall we?

Topping the table here is the Eagles’ Jason Puncheon , who’s yet to hit the back of the net despite 31 efforts on goal; how they could do with some of those going in.

Man United’s Ander Herrera doesn’t fair much better with 30 unsuccessful attempts, while he’s joined in the top five by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg , Jack Wilshere and injury-ravaged Aaron Ramsey .

The Swans’ Gambian winger Modou Barrow had an inefficient first half of the season, failing to convert despite having 56 touches in the opposition box. He won’t get a chance to improve on those numbers either, since his loan move to Leeds United .

Duncan Watmore , Hector Bellerin , Nordin Amrabat and Jordon Ibe are the others who make up top five and who may all be looking so stop dallying in the area quite so much.

Unsurprisingly, this list is made up with midfield battlers - and headed up by the destructive N’Golo Kante , who has completed 770 passes in the opposition half without an assist.

Victor Wanyama , Oriol Romeu and Francis Coquelin probably won’t be too fussed about featuring here, but Spurs’ Mousa Dembele may probably want to get a few assists to his name before the season’s out.

Xherdan Shaqiri - you need to have a word with the forwards in front of you at Stoke. Go on, pull them aside at the training ground and show them these stats. You’re creating the chances - they’re missing them.

Scott Arfield , Yohan Cabaye , Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente , feel free to do the same. You’d all be having very different seasons they a few of these opportunities gone in.

Mr Borini - next time you’re out wide, maybe give it to a teammate, get into the middle and try to get your head on it instead. Crossing clearly isn’t for you.

We reckon there’s plenty of work to be done on the training ground for the rest of this group too. It’s not hard - just aim for the people in the same shirt as you, right?

Take a bow Nathaniel Clyne , you’re clearly the squeaky-clean tackler of this season’s Premier League, attempting 51 without a single yellow to your name. That’s a huge 18 more than your nearest rival - Christian Eriksen of all people.

It also appears as if Gael Clichy has finally learned to defend properly (maybe), while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and veteran Darren Fletcher finish this list.

Consider yourself fully clued up on the latest essential stats ahead of the latest round of fixtures.

Manchester United vs Southampton, EFL Cup final: what time is the match, what TV channel is it on and what is our prediction?

Show/hide article…

Manchester City were the winners last season, beating Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on penalties.

The trophy proved to be Manuel Pellegrini’s last as manager of Manchester City as the Chilean made way for the incoming Pep Guardiola in July.

Manchester City’s back up goalkeeper Willy Caballero was the hero last year as the Spaniard saved three of the four Liverpool spot-kicks he faced to hand City victory following a tense penalty shootout.

This year Manchester United will look to ensure the trophy stays in Manchester, while Southampton - who shocked Liverpool in the semi-finals - will be hoping to pull off their first Cup triumph in over 40 years.

EFL Cup Final Predictions: Man United or Southampton? Starsport writers have their say

Show/hide article…

There was a feeling among Chelsea staff that Jose was a bit of a misery after returning to Stamford Bridge in 2013. Then, as soon as he won the League Cup, Mourinho was the life and soul of the place.

It’s not quite like that now with Mourinho well-settled in at Old Trafford - but it is a big indicator at how much he values silverware, whatever it may be.

The EFL Cup would have been far from at the top of his wish-list after getting the job but he’s not going to throw it away now.

He’s won three League Cups before and I fully expect him to make it four on Sunday.

Southampton have played their final already - by beating Liverpool. This is one step too far.

Wayne Rooney WILL play against Southampton as Jose Mourinho confirms skipper is in squad for Wembley

Show/hide article…

Wayne Rooney will be involved in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

Rooney, who confirmed he is staying until the end of the season after he was linked with a deadline day move to the Chinese Super League on Tuesday, will play a part at Wembley.

The Manchester United skipper has not played since January 29, but boss Mourinho confirmed his involvement this weekend and praised him for clarifying his future until the end of the season.

Rooney, 31, released a statement on Friday, committing himself to United until at least the end of the season and Mourinho said: “I think he did in the right moment, in the best moment he did his declaration, his statement.

“I told you that the questions you are asking me were questions for him. Only he could answer and he did it in exactly the right moment.

“Your question is the last question about Wayne Rooney and should be until the end of the season

“He said he is staying and hopes to help the team to fight for the trophies. I am happy with that.

“He’s training with the team. He wasn’t selected for the St-Etienne game because he wasn’t ready to play, but he was ready to have one more training session. So he’s ready.”

Mourinho also revealed Michael Carrick, who came off with a calf injury in United;s 1-0 Europa League win at St Etienne in midweek, is fit.

But Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was also forced off in the same game, with a hamstring injury has been ruled out.

Mourinho said: “Michael is available. He’s clever and experienced, and he left the pitch in the right moment, so Michael available

“Mkhitaryan is out and Phil Jones? Let’s see and decide tomorrow.”

Gary Neville says Man Utd will have to be at their best to beat Southampton in the EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Gary Neville says Man Utd will have to be at their best to beat Southampton in the EFL Cup final

Manchester United will have to be at their very best to beat Southampton in Sunday’s EFL Cup final, according to Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

The two clubs go head to head at Wembley Stadium with the first trophy of the season up for grabs at the home of football.

However, United should not underestimate the challenge facing them this weekend against a team who knocked out Liverpool over two legs in the semi-final, says the club’s former captain.

“I think they will do enough to win the game, but I do not think it will be easy at all,” he told Sky Sports. "I think Southampton will be well prepared and some of their lads will be playing in the biggest game of their lives.

“And they will play it like that, so United will have to be at their very best.”

With United currently sitting in an unfamiliar position in the Premier League, outside the top four and 12 points behind leaders Chelsea, Sunday represents an ideal opportunity for manager Jose Mourinho to land some silverware in his debut season at Old Trafford.

“He [Mourinho] is a trophy hunter and United are not going to win the league this season, so it looks like the cups are going to be the only way they can win a trophy now,” said Neville.

"And I think it is important for the confidence of the players and where they want to get to eventually, which is Champions League and Premier League titles, that this will be an important stepping stone.

“But yes they have to win, that should be the mentality going into the game.”

Neville also believes that a United victory this weekend could act as a springboard to further success, just as it did for Mourinho in his first spell in charge of Chelsea.

Then, back in the 2004-05 season, the Blues’ League Cup final triumph over Liverpool proved to be the catalyst for the club’s first top-flight title in 50 years.

“It definitely has done previously with United and with Chelsea, it has done it with other clubs where they have gained confidence from it,” he said.

“And one thing is for certain, it won’t do any harm. It could damage the players if they do not win on Sunday, they are in the midst of a great run, but I do think they will have enough to see it through.”
