Gary Neville: Manchester United are being carried by Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Show/hide article…

Gary Neville said Zlatan Ibrahimovic is carring the team

The superstar Swede may be 35 but he’s played more games and scored more goals than any other United player.

Ibrahimovic netted two in the 3-2 EFL Cup final win over Southampton to make it 26 goals for the season.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said: "Ibrahimovic is definitely carrying them at the moment.

Redmond grateful for fans’ backing

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond highlighted the importance of the role played by Southampton’s supporters during the narrow defeat to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.

Redmond felt that the fans played an integral part in Saints’ efforts, and added his gratitude for keeping not just the team, but the whole dressing room going during the game.

“The fans were fantastic,” he said.

“We couldn’t ask for a better set of fans and I just want to say thank you to them on behalf of the players and everyone else inside that dressing room – they got us through it today, throughout the competition, and I’m sure they’ll help us through to the end of the season as well.”

Saints went close to winning it in the second half, going close right up to the end of the 90 minutes, and Redmond was disappointed not to reward them.

“I want to say thank you to the fans,” he said.

“We really appreciate the support they gave us.”

Tuesday can be a step in the right direction, says Lewis

Show/hide article…

Saints must avoid defeat to progress into the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup, and Lewis admits the current crop of youngsters are hungry to emulate the success of Southampton’s 2015 cup-winning side.

“I wasn’t here when the lads won the cup last time around, but they still talk about it now,” he started.

“It would be great for us to replicate that and Tuesday is a chance for us to get another step in the right direction.

“It was a fairly comfortable game for us back when we played Newcastle, but we know it is the last game of the group and they will be as up for it, as will we. It will be a physical test, but one we need to stand up to.”

Martin Hunter’s men saw off Newcastle 3-0 at Staplewood in the home leg of the Premier League Cup back in December.

Since then goalkeeper Lewis has spent the majority of his time with the first-team set up, though he is glad now to be back in regular action for the Under-23s.

“I had a couple of weeks away and involved with the first team,” he continued.

“That was good, of course, but Under-23s is my level at the moment and I need to make sure I am hitting everything I need to hit at this level.

“So I am more than happy to be back down and getting more game time – it’s more good experience for me.”

Gary Neville gives brutally honest assessment of Man United v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton came from two goals behind to get level courtesy of Manolo Gabbiadini’s double at Wembley. The Saints looked the better team but Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late winner - his second of the afternoon - ensured United lifted the cup. Neville, speaking on Monday Night Football, admitted: "The team that played best didn’t win.

“They just did enough to get over the line” "Before the game, if you said how will Manchester United going to win, I’d have probably said how they did. "They just did enough to get over the line. "I’m not sure Southampton had enough in them to deal with the power of Zlatan. Being free in the middle of the six-yard box in the last five minutes is a massive issue.

"But there’s no doubt Southampton played a great game tactically. "Manchester United won in the way I always thought they would. “Southampton were fresh, had 14 days of preparation, it was always going to be that type of game.”

Manolo Gabbiadini: Liverpool want to sign Southampton star next season - Micky Quinn

Show/hide article…

Gabbiadini has hit the ground running since arriving from Napoli in January, scoring five times in three games for the Saints. The Italian scored twice in the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United on Sunday and wrongly had a goal disallowed for offside. Liverpool have a history of signing players from the south coast club, with Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne all in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad.

“We’ve already got Gabbiadini lined up for next season! We’ll get every Southampton player going!” And when talking about Liverpool’s transfer plans, Scouser and Reds fan Quinn joked on talkSPORT: "We’ve already got Gabbiadini lined up for next season! “We’ll get every Southampton player going!” The Reds were also linked with a move for Saints defender Virgil van Dijk in January.

But chairman Ralph Krueger is determined not to let the defender leave, saying: "Virgil is very committed us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future. “He is our team captain and we don’t see him anywhere else than in red and white stripes.” Quinn responded by saying: “Liverpool could have done with him last night (against Leicester)!”

Virgil van Dijk is ‘very committed’ to Southampton, insists chairman

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk will not be moving clubs this summer, insists chairman Ralph Krueger.

The defender was in demand in January with a host of top Premier League clubs reportedly interested in the Dutchman.

Tall, strong, athletic and a threat at both ends - the 25-year-old has been a stand-out performer for Claude Puel’s side and has proven himself to be more than adept since his move from Celtic in 2015.

But Krueger is adamant Saints will fight off any advances for their star performer and assured fans he will stay at St Mary’s - after his defensive partner Jose Fonte made the switch to West Ham last month.

‘We are just out of the January transfer window and are striving to keep this group together and to build on it,’ Krueger told talkSPORT.

‘Virgil is very committed to us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future. He is our team captain and we don’t see him anywhere else than in red and white stripes.’

The Saints’ revered production line and shrewd transfer dealings have yielded top talents which now grace other top clubs in England.

Southampton have fallen foul to the label of a ‘selling club’ in recent years, with their assets being prised away by Premier League heavyweights, leaving the club in a constant rebuilding state.

Now the chairman has said the club will change their approach to future transfer windows in order to stabilise and build upon the foundations established by their recruitment policy and stellar academy set-up.

‘We don’t want to do what we did in the last three summers every year,’ Krueger added.

'We would like to move away from that and we feel confident this summer will be a lot quieter in Southampton and we can keep the core of this team moving forward for a few years.

'That is going to be important when you see how excellent the group is right now and how exciting the football is.

‘The game we are playing is a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to be part of.’

Mourinho conversation with Gabbiadini revealed: What Man Utd boss said to Southampton star

Show/hide article…

The Manchester United boss was spotted in conversation with Gabbiadini after he netted twice in Southampton’s 3-2 defeat. And according to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mourinho told him: “You were fantastic - you scored two goals of a real champion.” Gabbiadini has now scored five goals in three matches since he completed a £14m move from Napoli.

Claude Puel is a big fan and said: ”He is important for us now as he is a clinical striker. "His quality in the box is efficient, with good runs and now is interesting for us of course [because in the] three last games he’s scored six [including the disallowed goal]. “The first goal was good. It is fantastic and important to have him because since the beginning of the season we had many games with quality but without reward.

“He reminds me so much of Filippo Inzaghi” “It was important to get this quality of player.” Meanwhile Gary Neville has likened Gabbiadini to Filippo Inzaghi. He said on Monday Night Football: “Very rarely have I seen movement across the box so many times in a game. “We always like to compare players and find out who they remind us of, he reminds me so much of Filippo Inzaghi.”
