Davis: We are full of belief

Show/hide article…

Saints take on José Mourinho’s men with the aim of picking up their first major trophy since 1976, and Davis believes the testing run endured to reach Wembley could well spur them on to secure silverware.

“We have a huge challenge ahead of us again in Man United,” the captain started.

“But we’ve overcome a difficult run to get ourselves there, so we are full of belief. We know the quality we have got in the team and that we can beat any team on any given day. It’s about going out and showing that one more time.

“It’s a great achievement to get to a final and get the opportunity to go and play at Wembley. It’s something we’ve been aiming for over the last few seasons and we’ve managed to get ourselves there.”

There will be a mass exodus from Southampton on Sunday, as 32,124 Saints fans are set to travel to Wembley to show their support.

And Davis believes that their backing, especially in the opening minutes of the game, could make a vital impact.

“A good start is crucial in certain games,” he continued.

“The first goal in any game can be massive, but definitely in a final it can give you that momentum to carry it on and push on. It’s about game management, really.

“We have enough experience within the team to know how to deal with certain situations within games, so it’s an occasion to look forward to.”

Southampton FC face Manchester United at Wembley in EFL Cup Final - check before you travel!

Show/hide article…

Football fans from Southampton will be on their way to Wembley tomorrow to see the Saints take on Man U. The sides are in a face-off for the final of the English Football League Cup. Kick-off is at 4.30pm on Sunday 26th February.

The trains from Southampton are expected to be extra busy as fans head to see their sides in competition. The rail network is also expecting higher customer numbers than usual especially at Clapham Junction, as people change for overground services to Wembley; and also at London Waterloo as people switch to underground services to Wembley.

South West trains are putting on additional trains for travellers:

From Southampton Central to London Waterloo at 10.50am and at 11.50am.

In the evening for the return journeys, there are also two additional trains from London Waterloo to Southampton Central at 8.50pm and 9.50pm.

However, there are warnings for people to check for engineering works along the route if they are attending the Cup Final. There are planned engineering works in the Bournemouth areawith buses replacing trains between Poole, Bournemouth and Southampton Airport Parkway.

There are also engineering works on the London overground, meaning no services between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction.

There are no direct Southern services between Clapham Junction and Wembley Central.

The rail network is also expected to be busy because of the Six Nations rugby tournament at Twickenham. Rugby fans will be heading to the ground for the England v Italy match which kicks off at 3pm on Sunday.

Where Manchester United and Southampton can win EFL Cup final, by Gary Neville and David Prutton

Show/hide article…

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata were all starting earlier in the season, Manchester United had a lot of players that were better coming to the ball, players who were very good at beating men running back to their own goal and it could leave them looking one-paced.

But now they have players making runs in behind, even Paul Pogba regularly running from midfield, the football is far less static, they are far more mobile and more difficult to play against and this is what Southampton will have to try to counter.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be a big loss for United. Particularly since moving to the No 10 role, he has injected speed and energy and connects the midfield and attack very well but they still have players like Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Pogba who can make those runs and liberate Ibrahimovic and Mata.

Juan Mata absent as Manchester United squad travels to London for EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Juan Mata was not spotted by photographers as Manchester United’s players travelled down to London ahead of Sunday’s EFL Cup final.

Wayne Rooney, who has not played for United for almost a month, was present but the Red Devils’ Spanish playmaker’s place at Wembley now appears to be in doubt.

United are already without Henrikh Mkhitaryan with a hamstring injury he sustained against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.

Rooney could be afforded a starting berth against Southampton if Mata joins Mkhitaryan on the sidelines.

However, United boss Jose Mourinho insists insists he won’t allow sentiment to cloud his judgement when it comes to selecting his team.

Mourinho said: “I have to make a decision. You know that we normally play two different systems.

“Sometimes we play with two midfield players and a No10, if you want to call it that.

“Sometimes we play with a No6 and two midfield players in front.

“Without Mkhitaryan, if we want to play with a No10, obviously Wayne, it’s his position.

“It’s where he was playing with us for many matches.

“He is an option for me. A final is a special match and he’s an option for me.”

Discussing his team selection, Mourinho added: “Only the best 11 players. We win all together. It doesn’t matter if you play or didn’t play, if you play a lot or don’t play much. I go for the best possible team.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick were among the players who joined Mourinho and Rooney at Stockport station on Saturday as United made their way to London, the Manchester Evening News report .

Mourinho is aiming to win his first piece of major silverware as United manager - as well as his fourth League Cup.

He’s already tasted victory at Wembley with United, having won the Community Shield at the national stadium in August.

Iconic music and microwave demonstrations - what life was like when Saints first reached the League Cup final

Show/hide article…

Saints are in the League Cup final for the first time since 1979.

But how has life changed since the club played Nottingham Forest at Wembley 38 years ago next month?

Looking back through the Southern Daily Echo archives, you could buy a new four-bedroom house in Five Elms in Romsey for £31,500. New two and three bedroom houses at Ingleside in Netley started at just £15,950.

You could rent - rent, not buy - a 26 inch screen colour television from DER Rentals for just £8.10 a month. An advert in the Echo said ‘these are not new but good-as-new sets, kept in top condition by us’. The televisions came with ‘remote control sets’ - an offer so good the company felt obliged to put an exclamation mark after.

You could buy a brand new dish washer for £229 and a brand new fridge freezer for £194.90, while you could also attend - at Southampton Guildhall no less - a ‘Microwave Owen Demonstration Evening’. Tickets were free.

On BBC1 the day before the Wembley final, Saints fans could relax in front of their television - rented or otherwise - and watch a Tom & Jerry cartoon (7pm) followed by The Dawson Watch (with Les Dawson), The Other One (with Richard Briers), the News at 9pm followed by the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships (from Vienna).

If you didn’t fancy that, on Southern (ITV) you could watch The Jim Davidson Show at 7pm followed by Winner Takes All with Jimmy Turbuck.

Sports buffs were catered for over on BBC with Pot Black Snooker and International Pro-Celebrity Golf, featuring actor Peter Falk - best known for playing detective Columbo - partnering Seve Ballesteros against Lee Trevino and Lew Hoad (former tennis player).

If you fancied a night out at the flicks, the ABC cinema in Southampton were showing The Deer Hunter (starring Robert Di Nero) and National Lampoon’s Animal House starring John Belushi.

The Gaumont Theatre in Southampton had an eclectic range of performers coming in the following few weeks.

They included Light Entertainment giants Little and Large, the Welsh National Orchestra, David Essex, Nana Mouskouri and Judas Priest.

Number one in the music charts was Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ followed by Elvis Costello’s ‘Oliver’s Army’ and ‘Tragedy’ by the Bee Gees. The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Abba, Thin Lizzy and Queen, Dire Straits, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Chic and Rod Stewart were also in the top 30.

Number one in the album charts on March 17 1979 was the Bee Gees’ ‘Spirits Having Flown’, which had just knocked Blondie’s ‘Parallel Lines’ off top spot. It would be replaced at number one by Barbra Streisand’s ‘Greatest Hits’ and The Very Best of Leo Sayer.

Art Gurfunkel’s ‘Bright Eyes’ would go on to become the biggest selling UK single of 1979, followed by ‘Heart of Glass’ by Blondie.

Saints took on Forest at Wembley with the political situation in Great Britain highly volatile after the Winter of Discontent featuring a huge number of workers striking. They included grave diggers and rail workers (not much different to this year for Southern Rail customers!) and lorry drivers.

A few days after the League Cup final, Prime Minister James Callaghan lost a motion of ‘No Confidence’ in his Labour government and had no option but to call a General Election. Margaret Thatcher subsequently became the first female PM in history.

From Warsash Wasps to Wembley - Saints fan Simon’s great football odyssey

Show/hide article…

All team names that put a smile on my face to this day, writes SIMON PEACH.

My dream from a young age was to become a sports journalist, with a lack of talent making it clear I would not cut it as a footballer.

So, as a wide-eyed 16-year-old, I sent a letter to the Daily Echo enquiring about work experience.

I will forever be grateful for whatever they saw in the green kid with an inability to grasp the use of apostrophes.

For two years I wrote about youth football in the area, with my weekly ‘Mud Larks’ column in the Echo and round-up of the Eastleigh and District Mini Soccer League in The Sports Pink.

This time traipsing around muddy fields of Southampton whetted the appetite and allowed me to hone skills that I now put to use in slightly more salubrious surroundings.

Less than 11 years after filing my final EDMSL round-up, I now work as Chief Football Writer for the Press Association - the national news agency of the UK and Ireland.

From the pitches of Southampton Sports Centre and Wide Lane, I now spend most of my time at Wembley or Old Trafford as the role primarily sees me cover England and Manchester United at home and abroad.

There is rarely much downtime, especially with United - a club whose sheer size smacks you round the chops when you first get there.

There is precious little time to take a breath, with the last few days alone seeing me go from Blackburn to St Etienne as Wayne Rooney edged towards the exit only to stay, ex-Saint Luke Shaw’s uneasy situation worsened and Jose Mourinho fired off his latest barbed comments.

It is a fascinating chapter in the club’s history as United finally attempt to move on from Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, with League Cup glory this weekend seen as an important block on which to build.

The match marks a year in my role covering United and - due to heading to the Olympics and the like - will be my first Wembley final in the job.

The day could not feel any more fitting for me: United are the team I cover, Saints the team I support.

I had a season ticket for many years at St Mary’s, coached within the club’s community scheme and covered them for the Press Association.

I was in the away end in Milan and Prague, and get to games whenever work allow.

Thankfully work and leisure combine at Wembley - a match I have spent the last month fielding questions from puzzled colleagues, friends and family about.

‘Why are you not going as a fan?’ asks everyone, seemingly forgetting that covering my boyhood team in a major cup final is a dream come true.

Keeping my cool will be hard in the unbiased surroundings of the Wembley press box, but writing a match report might help channel the adrenaline.

It will be quite a day and, while wearing my objective hat work-wise, I would love nothing more than to witness a repeat of 1976.

The Press Box: Paul Belverstone

Show/hide article…

You’ve covered the club for some time. How does it feel to see them going back to Wembley?

"I can’t believe that in 14 years it’s only their second major cup final. It shows what an achievement and opportunity this is. It’s fantastic, and the whole city really gets behind it and excited. Everyone I’ve spoken to is either going or is desperately chasing around for tickets. I was in Westquay the other day and the sale of flags, shirts, scarves and everything – they must be doing an incredible trade.

“That end – the same as the JPT final – is going to be red and white throughout, and they’ll make a lot of noise as well. It will be a fantastic occasion.”

What have you made of the run to the final?

"It’s sort of the opposite of 2003, when it was largely all lower-league teams. Now, it’s been all big guns really.

"Ok, there was Sunderland, who were struggling, but they’re still a Premier League team. There was only one thing to talk about in that game – it wasn’t a great game, apart from Sofiane Boufal announcing himself to us all in such an incredible away.

“The rest of it – beating Arsenal, and Liverpool over two legs, and deserving to win all of those games as well, probably by greater margins, has just been absolutely tremendous. I remember we sat down in the summer and said it’s going to potentially be the toughest season ever to finish in the top ten of the Premier League, so how about a cup run, because it’s long overdue? Fair play to Claude, he’s delivered.”

What are the chances of Southampton lifting the trophy?

"Given the way they played against Liverpool – they played them off the park – you can’t say they’ve got no chance. There are parallels to '76 of course. It’s at Wembley, against United. They do go there as underdogs. There are people picking out individual battles, where they say United are far stronger, but not many people gave them a great chance at the Emirates or at Anfield. Now they’re going to Wembley, so why can’t they make it three and a row?

“It’s been such a long time – 41 years. There’s only ever been one major cup-winning captain of Southampton. It’s time for a second one, and I think this could be the time.”

Who are the key players for Southampton on Sunday?

"Gabbiadini has made an incredible impact, and if that could continue for one more game how wonderful that would be. He’s really added some sparkle and is showing every attribute of a striker. His goals have been so varied and so exciting that if he can produce another one or two at Wembley that would be amazing.

"Obviously, Saints lost at Old Trafford in August, but they lost Oriol Romeu after ten or 12 minutes, but since then he has been immense. He is so good in that position, and they need his remarkable consistency to continue.

"Everyone has obviously got to chip in, but Ryan Bertrand is a very exciting, creative player down the left. Has there ever been a bigger challenge for Jack Stephens? Maya Yoshida, who’s really stepped up since losing senior partners, is showing great leadership at the moment and he needs to continue that again, perhaps helped by Fraser Forster at the back.

"Everyone’s got a part to play. You’ve got a European champion in Cédric, who can add things off the pitch as well as on it, because no one in that squad has played on a bigger stage than he has now, certainly recently.

“Gabbiadini, Romeu, Jack Stephens – those three down the spine – if they can all perform then they will be a long way towards lifting a trophy.”

It’s been an incredible journey - but we need to win a trophy

Show/hide article…

IT’S the first major Wembley final in my lifetime.

Well actually, I’m using a bit of artistic licence there.

I was just a baby when Saints fans made their way up Wembley Way to take on Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final in 1979.

No doubt my parents were having exactly the same dilemma my husband and I are currently facing.

Who on earth do we trust to look after our little girl who isn’t a Saints fan?!

The fact that it’s been such a long time coming says it all really.

Every year we think it might be our year. Every January 1st I religiously note all the cup run dates in my diary to avoid clashes. And every year, almost without fail, we are knocked out early on by the likes of Crystal Palace or Sunderland.

But they are bogey teams no longer after a great League Cup run.

It may be seen as an inconvenience in the early rounds, with teams fielding weakened sides and not wanting to be distracted from the Premier League.

But for us to get to the final by beating Premier League teams in each round, culminating in magical nights at The Emirates and Anfield, is a huge achievement and something we won’t forget in a hurry.

Of course we reached the FA Cup Final in 2003, but the match was staged at The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as Wembley was being rebuilt.

And I don’t mean to gloss over the 1992 ZDS Cup Final or the 2010 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win, both of which were great days out.

But Sunday represents a truly historical moment for our club to win a major honour under the famous arch.

The journey of Southampton Football Club from the bottom of League 1 to sixth place in the Premier League, in the space of just under seven years, has been the most incredible experience for us all.

But, even with two promotions and two European tours in recent years, we are still missing some silverware in our rather bare trophy cabinet.

For us fans, football is about winning things and the fact that an open top bus parade was staged last year to mark the 40th anniversary of winning the FA Cup was also a reminder of how long it has been since we held a trophy aloft.

We won’t get a much better opportunity than this to do just that.

Most fans I know would be happy to accept a lower league finish in order to win a cup.

A win on Sunday would put us back in Europe for another season and to do that three years in a row is fantastic for the club and fans, although not so good for my bank balance.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of our recent achievements, but no-one buys the DVD of the day we beat Palace to secure a top six spot in the league.

In comparison, the DVD of our big day in 1976 is slightly worn out around the time Bobby Stokes scored in the 83rd minute.

OK, it’s not the end of season showpiece FA Cup Final in glorious May sunshine.

The sea of colours may well be drowned out by coats and thermals at the end of February.

And Wembley as a stadium has now been slightly discredited with our opponents having already played there on three previous occasions in the last calendar year at the FA Cup semi final, final and Community Shield.

For a Saints fan, though, these occasions are few and far between.

I, for one, intend to savour every minute of what will, I’m sure, be a memorable day.

If you don’t, you might be waiting a very long time for it to happen again.

We’ve never won this cup. And winning it by beating one of the big boys in Manchester United is the way to do it.

The fixture already conjures glorious images of May Day 41 years ago for many of our fans.

It’s moments like these that memories are made of.

Lorelei Reddin is the Entertainments Editor at the Southern Daily Echo.

Juan Mata could still play on Sunday despite heading to Spain for funeral

Show/hide article…

Juan Mata made a plane dash from Spain to Wembley after attending his grandfather’s funeral.

The Manchester United midfield star was given special dispensation by boss Jose Mourinho to travel home on Thursday for personal reasons.

But it’s emerged the 28-year-old midfield star had flown back on Saturday night to join up with the rest of United’s squad who are in London preparing for the EFL Cup Final against Southampton.

It’s believed Mata travelled back to Spain sometime after starring in United’s 1-0 Europa League last 32 win against St Etienne in France on Wednesday night.

United managed to keep Mata’s mercy dash under wraps but it leaked out in Spain and a United spokesman confirmed the midfield star was not with Mourinho’s squad.

United put on a private jet to fly Mata back to London on Saturday night in time for the game.

Rooney could be afforded a starting berth against Southampton if Mata doesn’t return in time.
