Meon Valley golfer Harry Ellis on the verge of history

Show/hide article…

MEON Valley G&CC’s Harry Ellis will attempt to make history by becoming the youngest-ever player to win the English and British Amateur titles when he faces Aussie Dylan Perry in tomorrow’s final at Royal St George’s.

The 21-year-old, who is in the third year of his golf scholarship at Florida State University, blew away Italy’s reigning European Amateur Champion Luca Cianchetti in the semi-final after making a great up and down from the 16th.

It was the same hole where Europe’s next Ryder Cup Thomas Bjorn made a five to hand the Claret Jug to rookie American Ben Curtis in the 2003 Open championship at Sandwich.

With Ellis in the right greenside trap, his opponent was some four feet away from the pin in two.

But Ellis cooly hit his bunker shot and converted his third shot from around six feet to breeze into the final.

Only two players since 1924 have ever won the British and English crowns – legendary amateur Sir Michael Bonallack, the former R&A secretary, and Eisenhower Trophy winner Michael Lunt, who died at the age of 72 while captain of the R&A back in 2007, the year Stoneham’s David Harrison took over the mantle.

Bonallack, who played in nine Walker Cups, won both titles five times each – and is the only player to ever have done the double winning the English at The Berkshire in 1965, having claimed the British two months earlier at Royal Porthcawl.

Ellis became the youngest-ever English Amateur champion after triumphing at Silloth-on-Solway five years ago, aged just 16 - breaking Sir Nick Faldo’s record, which had stood since 1975 by some two years.

He came back to the UK after helping FSU - where US Open champion Brooks Koepka graduated from, and regularly returns to play practice rounds with Ellis and some of the Seminoles team – reach the NCAA finals, and after playing for Europe against the best American college golfers in the Arnold Palmer Cup at Atlanta Athletic Club, who hosted the US PGA in both 2001 and 2011.

Having enjoyed his best season Stateside, last year’s Lagonda Trophy winner found himself one down after four after the Hampshire man had missed a 10-footer for par after both players missed the green at the back.

Both drove the green at the short fifth - Ellis was not giving up distance against his much bigger-built opponent - but had to settle for half in fours.

The famous par three sixth - surrounded by some of the UK’s highest dunes on a golf course - cost the world no. 43 the lead after a poor tee shot led to a bogey four.

Ellis could not get up and down from the greenside trap on the eighth with his opponent 15 feet from the pin, and was forced to surrender his slender lead.

But after both players missed the fairway on nine – and with Cianchetti in thick rough on the left - Ellis made birdie from the right-semi to get to the turn all-square.

A crucial par putt on the 10th proved decisive as Ellis then went in front courtesy of Cianchetti’s bogey four on the long par three 11th.

A birdie three extended Ellis’ lead to two at the 12th and from two up with five to play, the Botley boy was not going to give up the chance to emulate Gregory’s success a year ago - and with that tantalising prize of a place in the Masters at Augusta beckoning for the winner of Saturday’s final.

Last year’s Mike Smith Memorial Trophy winner at Brokenhurst had overcome Walker Cup prospect Paul McBride from Dublin’s The Island GC, in the morning quarter-final – winning the last hole to go two up.

Who is Mauricio Pellegrino? Southampton confirm new boss

He is not new to the Premier League having spent two years as assistant manager at Liverpool under Rafael Benitez from 2008-10.

Prior to that he also had a brief playing stint at Anfield, making 13 appearances in the 2004-05 season - again under Benitez, his former manager at Valencia.

Pellegrino comes to Southampton after an impressive spell with Alaves, who he guided to ninth in LaLiga and the final of the Copa del Rey last season.

His appointment at Southampton comes after he was also linked with Watford and Crystal Palace.

Pellegrino, a defender and holder of three Argentina caps, enjoyed the best years of his playing career at Valencia.

He helped the club to Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001, and LaLiga titles in 2002 and 2004.

Born in Cordoba, Argentina, on October 5, 1971, Pellegrino made his name with Buenos Aires club Velez Sarsfield.

He won four league titles there before moving to Europe with Barcelona in 1998.

Pellegrino’s first senior managerial position came at Valencia in 2012 but he lasted just six months.

He continued his career back in his native Argentina with Estudiantes and Independiente before taking over at Alaves last summer.

Southampton appoint Mauricio Pellegrino: First task to persuade Virgil van Dijk to stay

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino lead Alaves to the Spanish Cup final last season

But his first task will be to persuade star duo Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand to stay.

Pellegrino has won the race to succeed sacked Claude Puel at St Mary’s after dazzling Saints bosses in interview.

But the former Alaves chief 45, goes into the job knowing he faces a battle to keep defensive duo Van Dijk and Bertrand.

England left back Bertrand is keen on a mega-bucks move to Manchester City while Chelsea are ready to test Saints’ resolve to keep captain Van Dijk.

The Dutchman saw his dream move to Liverpool collapse after Saints reported the Merseysiders to the Premier League for tapping up their skipper.

COMMENT: Saints gamble Pellegrino will be more Poch than Puel

Show/hide article…

Saints have rolled the dice on a few managerial appointments in recent years, and it appears they have done it again. Les Reed will be banking on Mauricio Pellegrino being more Pochettino than Puel.

Make no mistake, the decision to hand the key job at St Mary’s to Pellegrino is a considerable risk.

After a season of, at times, underwhelming football under Claude Puel, but still an eight place finish and a cup final, this is a decision the club need to get right.

With some wavering in the dressing room, a sense that the big targets and ambitions of the club have become words but without a clear direction in recent times, it needs a strong hand to steady the ship and put Saints back firmly on course to progress.

While any managerial appointment is inevitably a punt to some degree, you can take a certain amount of risk factor away when you go for an established big name.

At the very least if they don’t work out as you hoped you tend to be given a bit more leeway, as the majority of people will be surprised it turned out that way.

Puel’s tenure was far from perfect for reasons discussed in great depth over the last month or so. Saints obviously agreed, hence they took an un-Saints like decision to sack him.

And so do you then go for the antithesis of Puel? A bigger name, a strong hand on the tiller, an ‘exciting’ appointment that screams ambition.

Well, no, it turns out.

Saints have, in essence, gone for another Puel.

They have, either admirably or foolishly, time will tell, gone for somebody that fits their blueprint.

The statement to announce Pellegrino’s appointment contained hints at all the key elements – working with the squad, which means not requiring loads of spending, bringing through young players, the ‘Southampton Way’, which nobody seems able to really explain in any kind of practical sense.

The initial reaction of supporters has been interesting. People weren’t happy with Puel, but why get rid of him to bring in another Puel?

Only this one has vastly less experience and success to his name as a manager.

It’s not to say Saints have got it wrong. Hopefully quite the opposite is true.

But it is a big risk, and one that Reed needs to get right.

Pellegrino was, we assume, a very compelling candidate in interview, though presumably Puel was too a year ago.

He sold a vision that Saints bought into.

Of course, it doesn’t harm that it brings back memories of Pochettino, not just in name and nationality, but in spirit too by all accounts.

That was another major gamble, which paid dividends. For all his faults we can thank Nicola Cortese for that gem.

Ronald Koeman was less a gamble, and was terrific, but his ever growing control over things in the background didn’t sit well with the club’s hierarchy.

Puel was the opposite character, an antidote to that if you like, but it didn’t work out.

Having spoken over the past few days to people who know and have worked with Pellegrino in the past, the noises are positive.

He communicates well, something you could never accuse Puel of, he is affable, the players tend to warm to him, and he is adaptable when it comes to style of play.

He will need all those attributes at St Mary’s, and has considerable work to do.

Pellegrino will need to inspire a squad that have just fallen a little flat, and some players who have started to get frustrated.

Ultimately, it is hard for Saints. They are banging their heads on a glass ceiling that really is almost impossible to break through without significant spending.

Nevertheless, football never stops demanding progress, and the players, as well as the fans, want to buy into that. They want to have a target, and a clear way to achieve it.

Pellegrino is going to be the front man to all of this and he will need to ensure buy-in from the beginning with players, media and fans. Puel’s understated and private start to life got him off on a bad footing and it never really picked up much.

If Pellegrino can prove another inspired appointment then everybody connected with the club will be happy, but he will need to get up and running quickly to convince that Saints were right to stick to largely the principles and recruitment criteria that delivered a manager they sacked after just one season.

Saints star fined for speeding in the city

Show/hide article…

SAINTS record signing Sofiane Boufal has been fined more than £800 for speeding in Southampton city centre last Christmas.

The attacking midfielder, 23, was clocked by a fixed camera doing 36 miles per hour in a 30mph zone on December 18, last year.

Boufal admitted the charge, committed whilst driving a 15-reg Range Rover on the A33 St Marys Place/Kingsway, near Hoglands Park, when his case was heard at Aldershot Magistrates Court.

Magistrates fined him £660, with a victim surcharge of £66 and ordered he pay legal costs of £85.

The Bench also ordered that his licence be endorsed with three penalty points.

Boufal’s address was given in court as Staplewood Campus, Long Lane, Marchwood, which is Saints’ training complex.

He signed a five-year contract for Saints last August for an undisclosed fee believed to have been around £16 million from French League 1 side Lille.

His first injury-hit season was regarded as disappointing, playing 20 times and scoring just one goal, a superb 20-yard curling shot against Sunderland in the League Cup last October. In his last two seasons in France he scored 14 goals in 43 appearances.

He has one of the highest profiles on social media with 218,000 followers on Instagram, short of Saints’ striker Marco Gabbiadini’s 225,000.

Cédric aiming for semi-final spot

The European champions require just a point from their third and final group game against an already-eliminated New Zealand (4pm BST) in order to progress to the last four.

Portugal beat host nation Russia 1-0 in their most recent game, putting one foot into the semi-finals after their opening 2-2 draw with Mexico.

Cédric has started both matches so far and will hope to help Fernando Santos’s team extend their stay at the tournament today, ahead of the semis, which take place next Wednesday and Thursday.
