Juventus open talks with Southampton defender Cedric Soares over transfer - reports

Show/hide article…

Juventus have opened talks about a deal for Southampton defender Cedric Soares, according to reports in his native Portugal.

The 25-year-old has been a revelation since joining the Saints from Sporting Lisbon in 2015, emerging as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Premier League.

His form has not gone unnoticed on the continent and Serie A champions Juventus are well aware of Soares’ progress on the south coast of England.

Now, according to Portuguese newspaper Record, Juve have made contact with Southampton about a summer swoop for the German-born defender.

Although the talks are at a very early stage, it is a clear signal of intent for Juve as they attempt to add to their title-winning squad.

However, Soares won’t come cheap as his contract doesn’t expire until 2020.

Unemployed Saints fan got naked at St Mary’s for money

Show/hide article…

A SAINTS fan who was bet £50 by his friends to streak on the St Mary’s pitch has been fined the same amount in court.

Brett Andrews, 43, had been drinking while watching the Saints take on Stoke City on May 21, and was bet by his five friends, £10 each to streak on the pitch.

After agreeing, he stripped naked and ran from block 15 in the Chapel stand behind the goal, but was stopped by two stewards at the advertising boards.

The 43-year-old, of Neva Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency and was fined £50, as well as being given a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge.

Southampton Magistrates Court heard how Mr Andrews, who is unemployed, ‘needed the money’ and was ‘only doing it for a laugh’.

Prosecuting, Rachel Standish told the court that two stewards held onto Mr Andrews by the side of the pitch and dressed him, with others leaving the stadium because of his actions.

Ms Standish said: “The stewards noticed that there were families around, and indeed some did leave after witnessing the incident. He had been drinking and he did go quietly after the incident.

“It was his mates who dared him to do something stupid. He was bet to streak on the pitch and he wasn’t really thinking.

“He is ashamed and embarrassed at his actions.”

Defence solicitor Louise Morgan said the actions of Mr Andrews were ‘stupid’ and that he had no intentions of causing harm to anyone in the stadium.

Ms Morgan said: “He made a stupid decision and he had no intentions of making anyone feel scared or of causing harm to anyone.

“He was dared by his friends to streak and that they would give him ten pounds each, and he was with five friends.

“Mr Andrews said he needed the money and he was stopped by the stewards.”

Presiding, magistrate Ann Fielder said: “A combination of your friends and the amount you had to drink lead to what turned out to be a most stupid and foolish incident.

“It was a football match with a lot of people and you heard that someone left when they saw what you had done.”

Southampton appoint Mauricio Pellegrino as Claude Puel replacement

Show/hide article…

Southampton have appointed the former Argentina international Mauricio Pellegrino on a three-year contract having seen off competition from Crystal Palace and other clubs across Europe for a manager whom they believe fits their criteria perfectly.

The 45-year-old came through interviews with the club as their preferred candidate following the sacking of Claude Puel and they wanted him in place for the beginning of next week so that he can begin pre-season. Pellegrino, who took Alaves to the final of the Copa del Rey last season, is happy to work in the Southampton structure where the manager has parity with other key department such as medical and recruitment.

Announcing the appointment on Friday, the club’s executive director Les Reed said that Pellegrino believed that Southampton had the quality to play “exciting, attacking football, taking the game to our opponents by playing a high-intensity game.” Attractive football was something that Puel was too often accused of neglecting during his season in charge.

Reed said: “We had an impressive list of candidates and went through a comprehensive interview process. Mauricio impressed us throughout with his depth of knowledge, motivation and ability, communicating this in a professional and passionate way.

“He has an excellent understanding of the ‘Southampton Way’, and his style of play and aspiration matches the philosophy, culture and ambition of the club. We firmly believe Mauricio is the right person to help us take the next steps. He knows our players and believes we have a great squad that with some fine-tuning will be able to deliver continued success

CONFIRMED! Southampton appoint Mauricio Pellegrino as new manager

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has been appointed as the new Southampton manager on a three-year deal.

Despite guiding Saints to eighth in the Premier League and the EFL Cup final in his first season, frustrations behind the scenes and in the stands led to Claude Puel’s sacking last week.

Southampton have acted quickly to name his successor, with former Alaves boss Pellegrino penning a contract at St Mary’s.

“I am really happy to become the new coach of Southampton Football Club,” Pellegrino said.

"The club has a great reputation for having a strong and stable structure, competing in the Premier League and playing attractive football.

"I think my philosophy and the culture of the club will work well together. We have to be a team on and off the pitch; I want to make the supporters proud of the players and to feel part of the game every week.

"I want to win matches, be successful and develop a team spirit where everyone gives 100 per cent and supports each other.

“I am excited and passionate about what the future holds for us and look forward to meeting the players and beginning our preparation for the new season.”

Pellegrino becomes Southampton’s second Argentinian manager, with Mauricio Pochettino previously at the helm.

The 45-year-old, a former international defender, will officially join up with the club next week, in time for the start of pre-season training.

Pellegrino last season led Alaves to the Copa del Rey final in his only campaign at the helm after spells in charge of Valencia, Independiente and Estudiantes.

The former Argentina international coached under Rafael Benitez at Liverpool and Inter Milan, with Les Reed, Saints’ vice-chairman of football, impressed by both his philosophy and personality.

“I am delighted that after a diligent selection process we have recruited Mauricio Pellegrino as our new first-team manager,” Reed said.

"We had an impressive list of candidates and went through a comprehensive interview process. Mauricio impressed us throughout with his depth of knowledge, motivation and ability, communicating this in a professional and passionate way.

"He has an excellent understanding of the Southampton way, and his style of play and aspiration matches the philosophy, culture and ambition of the club.

"We firmly believe Mauricio is the right person to help us take the next steps. He knows our players and believes we have a great squad that with some fine-tuning will be able to deliver continued success.

"Mauricio believes with the quality we have we can play exciting, attacking football, taking the game to our opponents by playing a high-intensity game.

"He will continue to develop and introduce young players whilst building on the core of experience that we have in the squad.

"During the recruitment process Mauricio quickly became our first choice and, while he had other options, we are delighted he feels that St Mary’s is the right place for him and we believe he is the right fit for us.

“We are looking forward to working with Mauricio to take the club forward and achieve more success with this team.”

Five Facts: Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

He has played at St Mary’s once before

Pellegrino was part of the Liverpool team that visited Saints for a Premier League fixture in January 2005. It was actually the former centre-back’s first away game in the division, having joined the Reds that month. The match ended in a 2-0 win for the hosts, with David Prutton and Peter Crouch scoring.

He played under Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho at Barcelona

Then Barca boss van Gaal brought Pellegrino to the Nou Camp in August 1998, as he moved on a loan deal from Vélez Sarsfield in his homeland of Argentina. Current Manchester United boss Mourinho was on van Gaal’s coaching staff at the time – with Pellegrino spending a week following him when he was Chelsea boss – while he played alongside greats such as Pep Guardiola, Luís Figo, Rivaldo and Luis Enrique to name a few, helping the Catalan club to the La Liga title.

Former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is one of his friends

Pochettino, who took charge of Saints from January 2013 until the summer of 2014, and Pellegrino both hail from Argentina and know each other well. The pair both played in Spain and went on the same coaching course when they were making the transition towards management.

He cut his teeth in coaching under Rafa Benítez

After a spell working with the youth team at Valencia, Pellegrino got his first big break in coaching when Benítez, who has signed him as a player at Liverpool, added him to his staff at Anfield. He then followed Benítez to Internazionale in 2010, before his first management job, at Valencia, two years later. He will be looking forward to a reunion with Benítez, who is now Newcastle boss, when the teams meet, at St Mary’s, in October.

He has just led Alavés to one of the best seasons in their history

Taking over the newly-promoted side last summer, he guided the Spanish club to a ninth-place finish in La Liga – a position they have bettered only three times in their history. Their first win of the season was a special one, as they triumphed 2-1 at Pellegrino’s former club, Barcelona. On top of that, he took them to their first ever Copa del Rey final, where they were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona.
