St Mary’s pitch gets first cut

Show/hide article…

With the new season edging closer, the pitch renovation work to ensure the surface is pristine for the players’ return continues.

Wright explained: “We’re at the stage now where we are doing our first cut after the covers came off on Friday.

“It’s a case of trying to establish it the best we can by doing all of our normal practices.

“It is all about trying to get that plant as healthy and as strong as possible ready for when the players get back.”

“There’s a hell of a lot of work that goes into it throughout the season. This is more of an essential time for us to make sure we get everything correct.”

TRANSFER COLUMN: Reds target Naby Neita, Chelsea want £20m for Ake

Show/hide article…

Liverpool target Naby Keita has expressed a desire to leave RB Leipzig this summer but the German club want at least £70m.

Leipzig say they do not wish nor do they need to sell the 22-year-old hence their high valuation.

They had hoped to keep him for this season as they look to make their bow in the Champions League.

Liverpool have rejected any proposals to take Faouzi Ghoulam from Napoli as part of a deal for Alberto Moreno. The Anfield club want £15m for the Spain international.

Winger Ryan Kent, 20, who is a target for Birmingfham City, will be assessed on his progress in pre-season by Jurgen Klopp before any decision is taken on a departure.

Liverpool remain in the frame for Virgil van Dijk, who is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Premier League champions are ready to offer £60m for Southampton’s Holland international defender though the player remains keen on a move to Anfield.

Chelsea expect Juventus defender Alex Sandro to ask to leave the Italian club to help push through his record move to Stamford Bridge.

However, Nathan Ake’s expected move to Bournemouth may yet play out more towards the end of the window with the 22-year-old’s value increasing in a volatile market.

Southampton are also keen on Ake among several other Premier League sides and Chelsea’s price is now likely to be above £20m.

Chelsea remain in discussions over personal terms for prospective £35.2m signing Tiemoue Bakayoko with Manchester United waiting in the wings for Nemanja Matic.

Bournemouth have opened talks with Blackburn Rovers about a deal for winger Connor Mahoney.

The 20-year-old has turned down a new contract at Ewood Park and is a free agent but Blackburn are still due compensation due to his age.

Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Celtic had also asked about Mahoney with Blackburn prepared to go to a tribunal.

Mahoney, who started out at Accrington Stanley, can play on either wing, has been capped by England at U18 level and made 21 apperances for Blackburn last season.

Blackburn are closing in on the signing of Gillingham midfielder Bradley Dack for an initial fee worth in the region of £500,000. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender Tyler Magloire has signed a two-year contract.

The 19-year-old, who made his first-team debut last season as a substitute in the 4-1 defeat of Granada, has yet to agree on a contract at Barcelona and is taking stock of his options with Tottenham understood to be willing to offer him a deal should he decide to leave.

The left-footed Spain U19 international is represented by former Barca defender Carles Puyol and his business partner Ivan de la Pena.

The Colombia international is among the players Inter are willing to sell to help offset their Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Inter want around £15million for the 25-year-old who has 25 caps for his country.

Stoke have concerns in defence with Ryan Shawcross yet to commit to a new contract. They have considered various options including Mamdaou Sakho at Liverpool and Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

Murillo was discussed earlier this year and is back under consideration.

Stoke have ruled out a loan deal for midfielder Gianelli Imbula. The 24-year-old will be allowed to leave but Stoke want a permanent sale and want to recoup the bulk of the £18.3m they paid for him.

Derby, meanwhile, are unlikely to follow up interest in Stoke’s Glenn Whelan.

Manager Ronald Koeman is hoping for a breakthrough in talks over £25m-rated Burnley and England centre-back Michael Keane this week but Lemos remains an option.

Roma have also enquired about Uruguay U23 international Lemos who was considered by Barcelona last year. He can play at centre back or defensive midfield and scored five goals last season as he was monitored by Everton scouts.

Las Palmas, who only signed him permanently from Rubin Kazan a year ago, are indicating they want his £26m release clause which will prove an obstacle to any negotiations.

Everton, who remain intent on signing Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, have held talks with Burnley over their striker Andre Gray also and hope to finally conclude their £5.2m deal for Malaga striker Sandro Ramirez by July 3. Leicester City’s Demarai Gray is another forward they admire.

They have interest from more than one club in Romelu Lukaku though he is still expected to join Chelsea if they can agree a fee.

Nottingham Forest are showing interest in Everton’s young left-back Brendan Galloway who was on loan at West Brom last season.

Everton are also moving close to agreeing a deal with Queens Park Rangers for 18-year-old winger Josh Bowler.

Everton’s first offer of £1.5m plus another £1.5m in add-ons was rejected but Bowler has asked to speak to the Goodison club.

Talks are ongoing over a compromise fee after QPR included Bowler in their first-team squad that has headed to the Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort in the Algarve, Portugal, for a training camp.

Huddersfield Town are preparing to give crowd favourite Michael Hefele a new contract amid interest from Aston Villa, Norwich City and Derby County.

The 26-year-old who joined last summer from Dynamo Dresden has impressed over the past year scoring five goals in 42 appearances and playing a key role as Huddersfield earned promotion to the top flight.

His leadership qualities have attracted interest from Championship clubs hoping he can have the same influence on their campaigns next season but David Wagner is ready to reward the 6ft 4in centre back with a new deal.

Huddersfield, who signed Laurent Depoitre from Porto last week, are continuing negotiations over the £11.5m signing of Steve Mounie from Montpellier, as reported by Sportsmail last week, and are considering an improved offer for Derby winger Tom Ince.

Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amvi, meanwhile, is the subject of interest from Sevilla.

West Brom are lining up an offer for KAS Eupen winger Henry Onyekuru.

The 20-year-old Nigerian has been the subject of offers from West Ham and Arsenal and has been granted a work visa.

However, clubs still need to offer £7.85m to meet the work permit appeal criteria set out by the FA.

Blackburn are closing in on the signing of Gillingham midfielder Bradley Dack for an initial fee worth in the region of £500,000. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Blackburn defender Tyler Magloire has signed a two-year contract.

Former West Ham defender Stephen Hendrie is in talks to join Southend.

Hendrie terminated his contract by mutual consent at West Ham and is a free agent.

The 22-year-old left back joined West Ham from Hamilton for £250,000 in 2015 though failed to get the opportunities he hoped for.

He had a loan spell with Southend in 2016 where he played five games then spent last season on loan at Blackburn.

Meanwhile, Bolton have asked to take West Ham’s Josh Cullen on loan as well as Reece Burke.

West Ham have made enquiries about Osmanlispor’s Senegal international Badou Ndiaye. The clubs discussed an £8million price for the 26-year-old goalscoring midfielder last month though it is understood West Ham have not returned to negotiations.

Manchester City will not be pursuing a move for Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez despite links over recent days. The injury-prone Spaniard though an accomplished and versatile player is not on City’s shortlist.

Swansea are keen on Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa. The Spanish side want £9m for the 28-year-old who also has interest from Sevilla and Roma.

Burton have signed former Derby County and Wigan Athletic defender Stephen Warnock on a one-year deal.

Ipswich Town are in talks with Cardiff City over the signing of Emyr Huws. Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said: ‘I spoke to [Ipswich manager] Mick McCarthy and we’ve accepted an offer and I think it’s just down to the two clubs to sort the little details out.’

England U21 v Germany U21: European U21 Championship semi-final live on

Show/hide article…

Nathaniel Chalobah and Nathan Redmond face a race against time to be fit for England U21s’ Euro 2017 semi-final against Germany.

The Young Lions are hopeful the duo will be available but they trained away from the main group on Monday morning after coming off in Thursday’s 3-0 win over hosts Poland.

Chelsea midfielder Chalobah has a suspected groin problem while the England camp have not specified what is wrong with Southampton winger Redmond.

They are being assessed by the medical team ahead of Tuesday’s game in Tychy.

England, who are now based in Krakow, qualified for the knockout stages for the first time since 2009 after winning Group A. They beat Slovakia and Poland having drawn their opening game 0-0 with holders Sweden.

The rest of Aidy Boothroyd’s side trained with Will Hughes and Jacob Murphy ready to replace Chalobah and Redmond. The pair came on for them against Poland with Norwich winger Murphy scoring the second goal.

England have won four of the 10 competitive meetings between these two sides at U21 level (Germany two, drawn four)

The semi-final is a repeat of the 2009 final which Germany won 4-0, their only previous win in the competition

England are looking for a third European title after back-to-back triumphs in 1982 and 1984.

The Young Lions have played eight semi-finals at U21 level, winning three and losing five

This is just the third time in the last seven tournaments that Germany have made it out of the group stage (2009 and 2015)

England U21 v Germany U21

Show/hide article…

England duo Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah will both have fitness tests on Tuesday morning before their European Under-21 Championship semi-final against Germany.

Both players went off injured during Thursday’s crucial win over Poland and trained on their own on Monday.

Chalobah has a groin injury, while Redmond’s injury is unknown. Will Hughes and Jacob Murphy are on standby.

Aidy Boothroyd’s team take on Germany at 17:00 BST in Tychy, Poland.

England drew with Sweden before beating Slovakia and the host nation to win their group and set up Tuesday’s match - a repeat of the 2009 final, which Germany won 4-0.

Boothroyd’s team have moved from Kielce and are now based in Krakow as they prepare for Tuesday’s match.

Hughes - who has just left Derby for Watford - and Norwich’s Murphy both came off the bench against Poland, with the latter scoring the second goal in a 3-0 win.

“Both Nathaniel and Nathan have improved significantly since we took the precaution of bringing them off and Nathaniel played a part in Monday’s training session towards the end,” said Boothroyd.

"We want to be known as teams that win tournaments, but we know we’ve got a very tough opponent and we have a great deal of respect for the German team and it will be a very difficult game for us as well.

“I hope that we can execute the game plan. If we can we will have a good chance.”

Germany named an unchanged side for all three of their group games but it is expected that coach Stefan Kuntz will make changes. He claimed that England “could have an advantage” with 48 hours of extra recovery time since their final group matches.

Kuntz was not happy with their display against Italy on Saturday when they lost 1-0 in Krakow and says they need to “improve on their build-up as they didn’t use the spaces”.

They beat England 1-0 in March and were very impressive. On that occasion they played with three at the back but here in Poland they have had a settled 4-2-3-1 formation.

Max Arnold caught the eye that night in Wiesbaden and the Wolfsburg midfielder again will be a key player, while ex-Arsenal player Serge Gnabry is another familiar name.

The squad is not as strong as it could be because six players who would normally feature were called up to the senior squad to represent their country at the Confederations Cup in Russia.

This time last year, English football was reeling at Euro 2016 after the senior team were humiliated and humbled by Iceland.

The date - 27 June 2016 - will always be a haunting reminder of arguably England’s worst-ever defeat.

One year later, the Football Association can reflect on genuine shoots of recovery, with the under-17s reaching their Euro finals and the under-20s winning the World Cup in South Korea.

Regardless of what happens here in Poland, the under-21s have made solid progress after three previous Euro exits at the group stage.

They are taking charge at crucial times of matches and Boothroyd has praised their superb game management during the tournament.

Faith has followed frustration. After the fraught and heated half-time exchange as England trailed 1-0 to Slovakia and faced an early elimination - before coming back to win - there was more constructive work during the interval against Poland.

In that game, Boothroyd suggested changing the system at the break but the players told him they wanted to continue with a midfield diamond formation - and justified the decision by going on to win the match 3-0.

“I think it’s important when you’ve got players thinking like that because it means they’re making their own decisions and they’re accountable for them,” he said.

“I think part of being a coach is to be able to facilitate everybody else’s thoughts. Two brains are better than one, so if you’ve got 23 lads all contributing then you’re in a good place.”

De Boer named Palace boss

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace have announced Frank de Boer as their new manager.

The Dutchman, 47, who was on the shortlist for the Saints job before the club opted for Mauricio Pellegrino, has signed a three-year deal with the Eagles to succeed Sam Allardyce at Selhurst Park after the former England boss resigned at the end of last season having kept Palace in the Premier League.

De Boer, who was unveiled at the club’s Beckenham training ground on Monday afternoon, is confident he can have an impact on the English top flight, having seen his tenure at Inter Milan cut short in November after just 14 matches in charge.

“I had a good feeling about the club and the prospect of managing a team in the Premier league was exciting,” the former Ajax, Barcelona and Rangers defender said at a press conference flanked by Palace chairman Steve Parish.

De Boer is confident he can help Palace look up the table.

"The club can still grow further and further, because every year English clubs spend a lot of money, so it is possible to do something well.

“There is a lot of prospect to be a solid Premier League club,” the Dutch coach said.

"I have to see the players first, but I have my ideas, maybe one or two signings.

"We want to be a solid Premier League club, not a team which struggles for relegation, this is the target.

"If we can do more, then that is nice, but first is to be a very solid Premier League club.

“I have confidence with the team who is around me and the players that we can build a solid club.”

Balague: Pellegrino is a special coach

Show/hide article…

Southampton have made “an intelligent appointment” in Mauricio Pellegrino, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Pellegrino was appointed as a replacement for Claude Puel last week and, in an interview with the Southampton website, Balague says the club have landed a “special” coach, who worked wonders at Alaves last season.

“If you want to describe a philosophy of him it’s adapting to the needs of his team and to the players he has,” Balague told southamptonfc.com.

“He’s the kind of guy that will tell you if you have two very fast wingers then you have to play that way, or if it’s two tall strikers then we’ll play that way.”

Pellegrino’s first taste of Premier League action will come at home against Swansea City on 12 August.

Liverpool Transfer News: Van Dijk battle with Chelsea on, Klopp’s no to swap, Sakho latest

Show/hide article…

Liverpool remain in the hunt to sign Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk. That’s despite Chelsea preparing a £60m bid for the Holland international. Saints have lodged a complaint regarding the Reds allegedly tapping up their defender. But the Daily Mail say Van Dijk is still keen on working with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool could sign the 25-year-old this summer. Chelsea understand the central defender wants a move to Anfield and are wary about making a move for him as a result.

Jurgen Klopp has no interest in an Alberto Moreno for Faouzi Ghoulam swap deal this summer. Napoli had an £11m bid for the left-back rejected last week and are looking to sell for around £15m. TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: Starsport brings you all the gossip, rumours and done deals as they happen The Liverpool Echo claim no swap deal has been discussed between the two clubs. Ghoulam was in good form for Napoli last season helping them to second in the Serie A table.

New Crystal Palace boss Frank De Boer has commented on Mamadou Sakho and whether the club will try and sign the defender this summer. He said: “He was certainly impressive and important [last season]. We’ll look at what we need.” Sakho spent the second half of last season at Selhurst Park, helping Palace to Premier League survival. Klopp is said to be willing to let the Liverpool defender leave after a series of incidents in pre-season last summer.
