Who’s best from the penalty spot? We compare all 20 Premier League clubs

Who’s best from the penalty spot? We compare all 20 Premier League clubs

How good is your team from the penalty spot? We take a look at the best and worst conversion percentages among Premier League clubs…

Arsenal became just the third team to score 100 Premier League penalties when Alexandre Lacazette beat Ben Foster from 12 yards during the Gunners’ 2-0 win over West Brom on Monday.

Only Liverpool (112) and Chelsea (107) have scored more - and both have done so more efficiently than Arsenal.

Of those three clubs, Arsenal have the worst conversion percentage (74.6%) compared to Liverpool (77.2%) and Chelsea (85.6%).

How do those statistics stack up against rival Premier League clubs?

West Brom felt aggrieved to be denied a penalty against Arsenal on Monday when Shkodran Mustafi appeared to foul Jay Rodriguez in the box. It’s become something of a familiar feeling for Baggies fans.

Referee Bobby Madley’s decision extended their wait for a spot-kick to 39 games and counting, the longest active run in the top flight, albeit some way short of Wimbledon’s record 91-game streak without a penalty between 1997 and 2000.

Had Madley pointed to the spot, West Brom would have been given an excellent chance to take the lead at the Emirates.

However, their penalty-taking efficiency is the worst in the top flight - the Baggies have comfortably the lowest conversion percentage among current Premier League teams, scoring just 62.5% of their spot-kicks.

Leicester City (69.23%) have also struggled from the spot, most recently failing on Saturday when Simon Mignolet denied Jamie Vardy in a narrow 3-2 defeat.

The Foxes have succeeded with just 36 of their 52 efforts, with Riyad Mahrez missing four of his 11 attempts for the club.

Swansea have proven most clinical from 12 yards, converting 19 of their 20 penalties (95%). Their sole miss was courtesy of Scott Sinclair, who saw his strike kept out by Joe Hart in Swansea’s 1-0 win over Man City in March 2012.

Watford (93.3%) and Southampton (89.71%) also boast impressive penalty conversion ratios, with the Saints boosted by spot-kick kings Matt Le Tissier, James Beattie and Rickie Lambert.

The three forwards combined to miss just two top-flight penalties from a combined 50 attempts. Le Tissier’s famously came when Nottingham Forest 'keeper Mark Crossley denied him in 1993, while Beattie’s lone top-flight miss came for Everton against Charlton stopper Thomas Myhre in 2006.

Only Man City midfielder Yaya Toure, who has scored all 11 of his penalties, can beat Le Tissier’s record ratio of 25 scored from 26 attempts (96%).

Other top marksmen from the spot include Danny Murphy (94 per cent) and Julian Dicks (93.8%).

As for goalkeepers, former Arsenal stopper David Seaman boasts the best record, saving seven of the 22 penalties he faced (32%).

Among active 'keepers, Liverpool’s Mignolet (31%) and Watford’s Heurelho Gomes (27%) lead the way.

Belgium international Mignolet improved his already impressive reputation with another stop on Saturday, keeping out Vardy’s effort.

Gomes last saved a spot-kick in December 2016 when he stopped Christian Benteke’s effort during a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day.

Cedric on what will make the goal difference for Saints

Show/hide article…

CEDRIC Soares believes Saints’ full-backs can “make the difference” in the club’s quest to open the scoring floodgates.

Manchester City spent more than £100m on new wide defenders during the summer transfer window to boost their attacking ability from the flanks.

Chelsea and Tottenham also spent around £25m apiece in that area, showing the value placed on full-backs in the modern game.

And the Saints right-back knows that he and left-back Ryan Bertrand have a responsibility to aid Mauricio Pellegrino’s men finding the net more regularly, after netting just two goals from open play in six Premier League games this term so far.

“We need to have attacking full backs because they can make the difference sometimes,” he said.

“All the teams we play are defensively organised and sometimes you need a man from the back to make up that extra man.

“This can be the full backs with crossing, overlapping and opening space, even if you don’t get the ball.

“I will always try my best for the team to support the attack.”

Cedric scored for Portugal in the Confederations Cup in the summer against Mexico, but is yet to find the net for Saints since arriving in 2015.

The 26-year-old is eager to change that but is also targeting a haul of assists this season.

“You cannot always control it,” he said. “I try always to create some chances, some crosses.

“Against Crystal Palace I nearly scored and as I say it’s important for a full-back to participate in attack but it doesn’t need to be me scoring.

“Sometimes it needs to be me giving an assist or me opening space to other players to get into the action.”

He added: “The coach likes it when a full-back can attack, but your first mission is clear and that’s to defend well and then counterattack.”

After a win against Crystal Palace and a decent second-half performance in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, Cedric reckons Saints are building some momentum.

“We are getting better and we understanding better the ideas of the coach,” he said. “We are controlling the ball possession better, so we are definitely getting his ideas and trying to put them on to the pitch.

“In the last two games we showed that we are becoming the team the coach wants us to be.

“He wants us to be the team that controls the game,” he added. “Our players have a lot of qualities.”

Crystal Palace and Southampton on alert as £26m Barcelona striker eyes January exit

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace and Southampton have been put on red alert by the news Paco Alcacer wants to leave Barcelona.

The striker only moved to the Nou Camp last summer from Valencia for a fee of around £26million.

However, the Spaniard has failed to shine for Barca and he scored just six league goals last season.

The 24-year-old reportedly wants first-team football and he believes he can get that by leaving in January.

The news will be of great interest to Crystal Palace and Southampton, who were tracking Alcacer in the summer and are still in the market for a striker.

Loan Watch: Olomola nets fifth of the season

Show/hide article…

The 20-year-old forward needed just three minutes to leave his mark on proceedings, controlling a long ball before driving a low shot past goalkeeper Joe Anyon from the edge of the box. The visitors took a two-goal lead but were made to sweat in the second half as strikes from Robbie Weir and Kristian Dennis levelled the scores.

A stoppage-time header from James Bailey secured the three points for Olomola and co.

In League One, Ryan Seager was unable to extend his scoring run to a third consecutive match as MK Dons were held to a goalless draw by Northampton. Seager was withdrawn from the action shortly after half-time.

Harrison Reed meanwhile was an unused substitute in Norwich’s 1-0 success over Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Transfer News: Man Utd Griezmann boost, Chelsea still eye Sandro, Van Dijk backs Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Manchester United are reportedly still interested in signing Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann. ESPN claim that Diego Costa’s impending move back to Madrid has increased the likelihood of United swooping for Griezmann. The Frenchman will be available for about £88m next summer because the €100m release clause was retained in his new contract. The Red Devils shelved plans to sign the 26-year-old last summer but are now expected to try again at the end of the season.

Chelsea remain interested in Alex Sandro but the Brazilian has reportedly begun negotiations to extend his Juventus stay. Transfermarketweb claim the Blues, who wanted him throughout last summer, and Manchester City are tracking the 26-year-old. But it is said that talks are underway over Sandro signing a new contract in Turin. The fresh agreement, should he pen it, would see his salary jump to £4.4m-a-season and keep him at the club until June 2022.

Virgil van Dijk has backed Liverpool to go far in the Champions League this season - just weeks after his failed move to the club. The Reds were keen on the Dutchman last summer and are expected to reprise their pursuit in the coming transfer windows. The defender is clearly an admirer of the Anfield club and told Squawka: “I think Liverpool and Man City maybe [will go furthest of the English sides in Europe this term]. “Anything can happen, especially if you are the big English clubs who are in the Champions League at the moment.”
