Yoshida: It’s time for Saints to “step up”

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida has urged Saints to “step up” against the Premier League’s smaller clubs – starting at Stoke this weekend.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men put the frighteners on high-fliers Manchester United in the 1-0 defeat at St Mary’s at the weekend, with a top second-half display.

Japan international Yoshida now wants Saints to find that level of performance on a consistent basis as they prepare to face middling top-flight sides Stoke, Newcastle, West Brom and Brighton.

“That is the kind of the difference between Southampton and Manchester United but if we can play like this against teams in the top, hopefully we can step up against the teams in the middle,” he said.

“We have to be consistent more, not sometimes win, sometimes lose.

“If we continue to play like this we can have more chances.

“There is nothing much different between the top teams - if we want to step up more, we have to be better, more consistent.

“I believe we can do it.”

The 29-year-old is relishing the challenge of trying to keep his place at centre-back amid big competition for places in defence at Saints.

New £15m signing Wesley Hoedt has partnered Yoshida in the last two games, but Virgil van Dijk is likely to come back in at some point soon and Jack Stephens is another top notch option at central defence.

“It’s really tough,” he said. “I understand because Virgil is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, so I have to keep showing my good performance to the manager, to the fans and bring good results to the team.

“This is the only thing I can do.

“If you think about Wesley, Virgil … blah, blah, blah … there’s no point for me. I just have to focus on myself and keep playing well.”

“Through my experience in the last couple of years I am pretty sure that kind of pressure makes me stronger,” he said.

“Even Jack Stephens wasn’t involved in the squad. I think can kind of really high competition we have at Southampton.”

Hoedt joined Saints last month from Lazio and has already impressed, and Yoshida has liked what he’s seen so far.

He said: “He has done well the last two games. Its two games – the season is long. It will be more tough now but I’m pretty sure he will be fine.”

“That kind of competition we have I welcome.”

Jaidi: It was a disciplined away performance

Show/hide article…

Sam McQueen got the decisive strike from the penalty spot after Jonathan Afolabi was brought down in the box.

Jaïdi reflected: “It’s really pleasing and it’s good to keep the momentum from last week.

“We spoke to the boys about maintaining the momentum from a good performance and victory last week against Stoke and they responded really well to that.

“I told them before the game about keeping a clean sheet, particularly in an away game where you have to stop conceding and then look for your opportunities.

“We had a great number of set-plays and we should have scored from one of them, which was frustrating but at least we got the opportunities in the second-half and we controlled the game.”

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero tops ’ Power Rankings for second week

Show/hide article…

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has topped the Sky Sports’ Power Rankings for a second week running…

Aguero scored his sixth goal of the season and claimed his third assist during a 5-0 goal fest against Crystal Palace - taking City’s goal tally to a remarkable 21 goals from their opening six games.

Team-mate Leroy Sane (No 4, up 17 places) opened the scoring at the Etihad, while Raheem Sterling netted twice (No 8, up 41 places) and David Silva (No 10, up six places) collected two assists - although Fabian Delph’s long-range strike owed little to the pass.

Alvaro Morata soared 22 places into the No 2 spot and almost toppled Aguero atop the chart after hitting a hat-trick during Chelsea’s 4-0 win at Stoke, breaking the deadlock within two minutes - set up by a long pass from Cesar Azpilicueta (No 5, up 13 places).

Tottenham’s Harry Kane (No 3, up 11 places) secured a 3-2 win at West Ham in the early Saturday kick-off, scoring a quick-fire double before half-time.

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku (No 6, down three places) poached his sixth goal of the season with a 20th-minute match-winner at Southampton.

Richarlison continued his impressive form since joining Watford from Brazilian side Fluminense in the summer, snatching a last-minute winner at Swansea.

Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho was among the biggest risers this week, shooting 172 places up the chart to No 9 after scoring direct from a free-kick and assisting Mo Salah during a 3-2 win at Leicester.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Arsenal score 100th Premier League penalty, where does your club rank?

Show/hide article…

Arsenal joined an elite group of sides to have scored 100 Premier League penalties on Monday night.

Alexandre Lacazette converted from the spot against West Brom to make it 2-0 and seal all three points for his side.

Since the advent of the Premier League in 1992, the English top flight have only three clubs who have scored a century of spot kicks — with the Gunners the latest to join the club.

But it is Liverpool who top the list of the league’s greatest top-flight penalty-takers over the last 26 seasons, scoring 122.

Steven Gerrard makes up almost a third of the Reds’ impressive tally — converting 32 of his 39 from the spot — while Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen also contributed double figures.

Liverpool have not only scored the most, they have been awarded the most penalties, 145.

Chelsea are the other side to make up the centurion club, with the Blues scoring 107 of their 125 penalties.

The Stamford Bridge outfit also boast the player to have scored the most penalties for a single club in the Premier League era — Frank Lampard with 41.

The league’s most successful club, Manchester United, fall just short of the 100-mark for the time being, sitting on 97 goals from the 12-yard spot.

Just two clubs have maintained a flawless penalty ratio — Barnsley and Cardiff. The Tykes slotted all four of their penalties while Peter Whittingham scored Cardiff’s only top-flight spot kick.

Oldham have the worst penalty success rate in the league’s history, scoring only half of their six penalties.

But the current Premier League club with the worst record is West Brom, netting just 25 of their 40 penalties with a ratio of 62.5 percent.

Premier League’s best striker: Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero or Romelu Lukaku?

Show/hide article…

We asked the Soccer Saturday pundits to name the Premier League’s best striker after another weekend in which the attacking stars shone.

The Golden Boot battle is already looking an intriguing one after six fixtures, with Sergio Aguero, Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata both averaging a goal-per-game, while Jamie Vardy is on five and Gabriel Jesus, Alexandre Lacazette and Harry Kane have all found the net four times.

Lukaku and two-time winner Kane are Sky Bet’s 3/1 favourites in the top goalscorer betting, closely followed by Aguero (7/2), Morata (5/1).

The subject of whether the Premier League possesses a world class striker was debated on Monday Night Football, with Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher agreeing that only Aguero meets the criteria.

Here’s who the Soccer Saturday pundits rate as the league’s best marksman…

PAUL MERSON SAYS: "I’m going to go for Kane. I think he’s got everything. He plays up front on his own, he brings other players into the game. Don’t get me wrong I’m a big Aguero fan, but if I’m going one up top away from home then Kane is the one who can hold his own.

"He has a fantastic temperament as well, he plays all the time and scores important goals, whereas Aguero will get four goals against weaker teams or score later in games. That’s coming from a former Arsenal man so that’s how highly I think of him.

“I don’t think Lukaku has the all-round game. He’ll score if you put it in the box but he doesn’t bring other players in. Morata looks like a proper player but he’s still got a lot to prove.”

CHARLIE NICHOLAS SAYS: "My personal favourite is still Aguero. Kane probably has more about him in terms of being strong, good in the air, but when Aguero runs at people, which he’s not been doing for a couple of years, he has the balance, technique and confidence which elevates him into that world class bracket.

"Those are the occasions where Kane would just take on the shot but Aguero can pierce you with his movement and skill. When he’s on his day, he’s up there with Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, whereas as Kane doesn’t quite have that magic.

“I’m a big fan of Roberto Firmino as well but he’s not a natural goalscorer like the others.”

MATT LE TISSIER SAYS: "I backed Aguero for the Golden Boot at the start of the season and looking at it now I think Lukaku will be his closest challenger.

“Obviously Kane will be there or thereabouts if he stays fit and Morata has had a brilliant start, while Jesus might fancy his chances given the opportunities City create. But based on that reason I’m sticking with Aguero as he’s a world-class finisher.”

PHIL THOMPSON SAYS: "If I could sign on striker for Liverpool then I would probably go for Kane. I think his all-round game is slightly better than Aguero, Lukaku and Morata’s.

“The way he can drop into No 10 and move into the channels on either flank shows better understanding of leading the line than the other contenders. If he does fancy playing in front of the Kop then we’d certainly have him!”

NFL side reveal they are major Arsenal fans during UK visit

Show/hide article…

New Orleans Saints’ biggest stars were in attendance at the Emirates on Monday night as Arsenal beat league rivals West Brom 2-0.

The NFL side are currently in the UK ahead of their Wembley clash against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Ingram II and his teammates were lucky enough to go pitch-side where they recorded videos and posed for snaps.

The American Footballers also proudly wore their new Gunners shirts which they seemed to have picked up on the night.

And it was good night for the Saints to attend.

A brace from striker Lacazette helped seal a 2-0 win for Arsenal and extend their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

The £52.7million summer signing netted either side of the half to ensure his side claimed all three points, preventing them from falling further behind league leaders’ Manchester City and United.

Wenger’s men move up to seventh following their win over the Baggies.

The Frenchman’s attention will now turn to Belarus where his men face BATE in the Europa League on Thursday.

Saints and Doplhins mark the second NFL game at Wembley this season following on from Jacksonville Jaguars’ devastating 44-7 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
