Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Gary Neville questions deal - this shocked me

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk has become the most expensive defender in history after it was confirmed that he’ll join the Reds officially on January 1.

The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Anfield for several months and Jurgen Klopp has finally got his man.

Liverpool have needed a top class centre-back for years and Van Dijk could be the final piece in Klopp’s puzzle.

Pundit Neville knows the qualities Van Dijk will bring to the Reds but reckons the Saints have pulled off a great deal for themselves.

He told Sky Sports: “It sounds like a fantastic deal for Southampton.

Revealed: Crystal Palace rejected chance to sign world’s most expensive defender Virgil van Dijk for £6million

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace rejected the chance to sign the world’s most expensive defender for just £6million.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday, Neil Warnock revealed he wanted to sign Virgil van Dijk from Celtic for a small sum in 2014 during his second spell as Eagles manager.

But he was dissuaded from doing so by the club’s chief scout, who thought the Dutchman was not quick enough to play in the English top-flight.

Van Dijk went on to join Southampton, where he developed into one of the Premier League’s most sought-after centre-backs, and will move on to Liverpool in January in a record-breaking £75million deal.

“When I was at Palace, it was difficult to sign players,” Warnock began.

"I went after the centre-half at Celtic, Van Dijk, and they wanted £6million. I said ‘we have got to buy him, don’t we?’

“The chief scout went to watch him and said ‘he is not very quick, it’s Scottish football’. That was before Southampton came in for him.”

Southampton’s £300m team: The incredible transfer XI

Show/hide article…

Southampton have 75 million reasons to cheer this morning after completing a deal to sell wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool.

The Reds confirmed the club-record deal for the former Celtic man on Wednesday evening, bringing to an end a drawn-out saga that stretched back to the summer.

Not only is Van Dijk the most expensive defender of all time, he now joins an exclusive club of players sold by Southampton to the biggest clubs in Europe.

In fact, the Saints have made around £300million from selling players in recent seasons, a large chunk of which made their way to Liverpool.

The most high-profile is of course Gareth Bale, who joined Tottenham back in 2007 when the Saints were in the Championship for a fee of £10million.

Unfortunately for them, there was no sell-on clause and the Welshman went on to become the most expensive player in the world in 2013, joining Real Madrid for £82million.

Despite that miss, Southampton have made plenty of cash selling on stars elsewhere, including recouping large amounts from Liverpool.

The Merseyside outfit forked out £12.5million for Nathaniel Clyne in 2015, £25million for Adam Lallana in 2014 and £34million for Sadio Mane in 2016, sending a total of almost £72million to the Southampton bank account.

Tottenham dipped back into the Saints’ pool of talent after their successful raid for Bale, forking out around £11.5million for former Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld and £11million for Victor Wanyama. Earlier this year, Mauricio Pochettino went back once more to lure Paulo Gazzaniga to White Hart Lane.

Not to be left out, Manchester United had their pick of the crop from St. Mary’s, making Luke Shaw one of the world’s most expensive teenagers in 2014 when he moved to Old Trafford for £24million.

Arsenal actually kick-started the fun back in 2006 when they snapped up a 16-year-old Theo Walcott for around £12million, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain following for £15million in 2011.

Joined Tottenham in 2017 to be the club’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm. Impressed by keeping a clean sheet on his debut against Crystal Palace in November.

Currently out with an injury that has sidelined him since November, Clyne has made 93 appearances for Liverpool and scored twice. He faces a battle to reclaim his spot in the starting line-up when fit, with youngsters Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold impressing in his absence.

Shaw was touted as one of the most promising youngsters in the country when he joined Manchester United in 2014. A devastating leg break in 2015 set him back and he’s struggled to convince either Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho that he deserves a starting spot. He could be on his way out of Old Trafford in 2018.

A £20million arrival in 2014, Lovren was meant to add some steel to Liverpool’s defence - however it hasn’t quite worked out like that. His place is likely to be under threat following the arrival of Van Dijk.

Now the most expensive defender in the world. Van Dijk cut a happy figure in his unveiling pictures with a Liverpool shirt than he has done in recent months when he has been left out of Southampton’s matchday squad.

The former Ajax man joined Tottenham in 2015 and is now considered one of the best defenders in the league and was named in the PFA Team of the Year for 2015/16. Currently out of action with a hamstring injury, the Belgian’s future at Spurs is in doubt with contract talks dragging on.

Another player to join Spurs for a modest fee, Wanyama helped the north London side finish second in the Premier League last season. He’s also currently sidelined with an injury but could be back soon.

Recently back from injury, Liverpool will be hoping the former Southampton man is as good as he was before his enforced break.

The 29-year-old has made a total of 128 appearances for the Merseyside club since his 2014 switch.

Schneiderlin was meant to be the midfield general that Manchester United had been missing since Roy Keane, but it never really worked out.

He made just 25 league appearances in one-and-a-half years at Old Trafford before the arrival of Nemanja Matic spelled the beginning of the end. He joined Everton for a fee that could reach £24million back in January.

One of the biggest success stories to have come from Southampton. Mane is part of Liverpool’s feared ‘Fab Four’ of attacking talent, helping the club to score 46 goals in 20 games this term. That tally is the second highest in the league behind Man City.

His form will be key to Liverpool’s top four hopes and their Champions League progression, especially if they lose Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Bale’s progression to one of the world’s biggest stars has been bittersweet for Southampton, the club that nurtured him from a young age.

He joined Tottenham for just £10million, where he became one of the best players in Europe. Real Madrid came calling in 2013 and splashed more than £80million to secure his services.

While he’s won two Champions Leagues and La Liga during his spell in Spain, injuries and a loss of form have prompted rumours he could be on his way back to England at some point soon.

Joined Chinese outfit SD Luneng in 2016 for £13million having impressed at Euro 2016 for Italy.

Arsenal took a punt on young Chambers’ talent in 2014 and he’s since been on loan with Middlesbrough.

Having shone under Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton, a catastrophic injury threatened to derail his career. He sought a fresh start at the Hawthorns earlier this year.

Fonte speaks out after dropping hint another Saints star could join Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte has apologised for his cryptic social media message which had Liverpool fans thinking they were set to sign Ryan Bertrand.

The West Ham centre-back was responding to Virgil van Dijk’s Instagram post in which he celebrated joining “one of the biggest clubs in world football”, after agreeing terms with the Reds.

Commenting underneath the message, and the picture of the Dutchman holding a Liverpool shirt, Fonte wrote: “Pleased for you!!! Good luck brother!!! Another one @iamryanbertrand”.

His message sparked a social media frenzy, with Liverpool fans convinced the ex-Southampton defender was hinting Bertrand is set to follow Van Dijk out the door and join the Merseyside club.

Liverpool, who have now signed six Southampton players in recent years, had just parted with £75million to finally sign Van Dijk.

And understandably spirits were high among supporters, who suspected their team were really going for broke this January.

Following the social media frenzy, Fonte took to Instagram to post a message apologising for his comment, and to clear up any confusion.

“No disrespect towards Saints whatsoever on comment made on VVD picture,” wrote Fonte.

“Only saying that another player (6th) moves to Liverpool, which was something Bertrand and myself used to joke about! Apologies if anyone got upset.”

Saints to reinvest van Dijk cash - but not all in January

Show/hide article…

Saints plan to reinvest their world record £75m fee for Virgil van Dijk in new signings, but are unlikely to spend all the cash in January.

The Daily Echo understands that the club’s owners have sanctioned that the huge fee they will get from Liverpool will go back into the playing squad.

But the club are also believed to be keen to try and temper expectations of a lavish spending spree in the coming weeks.

Though they are committed to spending cash in January to try and resurrect their season, the board are understood to feel that splashing out all the money at a time when transfer fees will be hugely inflated may not be the most sensible plan.

Instead they will and strengthen in a few key areas in a bid to give Mauricio Pellegrino a much need shot in the arm for the second half of the campaign, with a relegation battle looming on the horizon.

Saints confirmed last night that van Dijk will be sold to Liverpool when the transfer window opens on January 1.

The Daily Echo understands that Liverpool will pay around £70m up front, with a further £5m in add-ons.

Celtic, to whom Saints paid £13m for van Dijk just two-and-a-half years ago, are thought to have a sizeable sell-on clause that will reduce the money coming into St Mary’s by about £7.5m.

The sale of the 26-year-old brings to an end a long running saga.

Liverpool have been chasing van Dijk for a number of months, but a potential deal hit the buffers in the summer when the clubs fell out over accusations the Reds had tapped up the Dutch centre half.

Van Dijk made clear his desire to leave Saints, for whom he has played 80 times, and was left out of the team until the transfer window closed.

He returned to the squad having not played since picking up an injury in January, but has not rediscovered his best form for Saints, who have decided to cash in, relieving themselves of a massive distraction and bolstering the coffers for January signings.

In a statement, the club said: "Southampton Football Club can confirm it has reached an agreement with Liverpool over the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

"Southampton have agreed a fee that will set a new world-record for a defender.

“The club wishes Virgil well in his future when the deal is completed on January 1st 2018.”

Van Dijk, who has been left out of the Saints squad for the last two matches, also issued a statement, which said: "Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player!

"Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!

"I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in years to come.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, the manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton.

"I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club. Thank you for everything.

“Thank you for the messages of support. I’m now looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting started #YNWA
