Charlie Austin charged with violent conduct after clash with Lossl

Show/hide article…

Southampton forward Charlie Austin has been charged with violent conduct after he kicked Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in the face.

The Danish goalkeeper was left with a bloodied face and a suspected broken nose following the incident in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

Austin, who scored his fifth goal in five starts before departing with a hamstring injury, avoided punishment for the incident during the contest, but could now face a retrospective ban from the Football Association.

Austin has until 5pm on Sunday to respond to the charge.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner took aim at the 28-year-old forward following the flashpoint.

‘After seeing the video footage, this should usually never happen, that an opponent hurts another opponent on purpose,’ Wagner said.

'I don’t like to say this, but it looks this way. Jonas as well was absolutely surprised. This was a nasty challenge and nothing I like to see.

‘I think he looks like this challenge was very ugly and nasty. This should never happen. Charlie Austin made the wrong decision in this moment.’

Austin netted the opener midway through the first half, but was substituted in the second half with a hamstring complaint and Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed he is likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the festive schedule.

Charlie Austin charged with violent conduct after clash with Huddersfield keeper

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has been charged with violent conduct following an incident during Saturday’s game against Huddersfield.

Terriers keeper Jonas Lossl committed to a ball in the box with Austin attempting to make a challenge, but the Danish international was first there comfortably.

Still, Austin continued his chase and his boot caught Lossl in the face.

An FA statement said: "Southampton’s Charlie Austin has been charged with violent conduct.

“It follows an incident during yesterday’s game against Huddersfield Town which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video. He has until 5pm today (24/12/17) to respond.”

The keeper immediately clutched at his face while Austin protested his innocence.

The England striker was then seen sharing words with Terriers boss David Wagnar, who appeared to take exception to the challenge.

“It’s very naughty,” said Danny Mills on BBC’s Final Score.

"Charlie Austin looks to have ample time to pull out of that one and he just leaves his foot in there knowing he’s going to make contact.

“It’s difficult to say, but I think he knows exactly what he’s doing.”

Austin’s goal was later cancelled out by Laurent Depoitre for 1-1.

Stat Pack: Tottenham vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s last four visits to Wembley Stadium have seen 20 goals scored (F10 A10).

Spurs are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games played on Boxing Day (W8 D3), since a 0-2 loss at Portsmouth in 2003.

Meanwhile, Southampton have won five of their last six league Boxing Day games (D1), most recently beating Arsenal 4-0 in 2015.

After failing to win any of their opening three Premier League games at Wembley this season (W0 D2 L1), Spurs have now won five of the last six there (W5 D1 L0).

Harry Kane has scored 36 Premier League goals in 2017 – no player has ever scored more in a calendar year in the competition (Alan Shearer 36 in 1995).

Kane also has 46 club goals in all competitions in 2017; only Edinson Cavani and Lionel Messi (50 each) have more among players within the big five European leagues.

Oriol Romeu will be making his 100th appearance for Saints if he features at Wembley.

Charlie Austin charged over Jonas Lossl clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has been charged with violent conduct after a challenge on Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

The 28-year-old Austin scored in Saturday’s 1-1 draw but now faces a ban after his clash was unseen by match officials but caught on video.

He has until 5pm on Sunday to respond to the Football Association’s charge.

Austin scored his fifth goal in his last five Premier League starts for the Saints, but in the 32nd minute, eight minutes after scoring, he caught Lossl around the nose with his boot when chasing a loose ball.

Questions were raised over whether the striker should have been sent off, with Charlie Nicholas in the Soccer Saturday studio saying: “He’s lucky it’s not a red card”.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner took a verbal wipe at Austin following the flashpoint.

“After seeing the video footage, this should usually never happen, that an opponent hurts another opponent on purpose,” the German said.

"I don’t like to say this, but it looks this way. Jonas as well was absolutely surprised. This was a nasty challenge and nothing I like to see.

“I think he looks like this challenge was very ugly and nasty. This should never happen. Charlie Austin made the wrong decision in this moment.”

After an hour, Austin missed a golden opportunity to put Southampton 2-0 up, but failed to convert past Lossl despite being in plenty of space.

And his afternoon was compounded further when he injured his hamstring after shooting at goal with his manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirming he is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the festive schedule.

Laurent Depoitre’s second-half header sealed a point for the visitors to extend Southampton’s winless run to six matches.

Charlie Austin: Southampton striker charged after tackle on Jonas Lossl

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has been charged with violent conduct for a challenge on Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

The Dane was bleeding and needed treatment after Austin caught him in the face with his right boot.

Austin, 28, has until 17:00 GMT on 24 December to respond to the Football Association charge.

He could serve a three-match ban if found guilty, but could face a spell on the sidelines anyway through injury.

The former QPR and Burnley forward, who is Southampton’s top scorer with six this season, headed in the opening goal in the Premier League match against the Terriers, but went off with a hamstring injury in the 79th minute.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino said the injury could keep Austin out for “a couple of weeks minimum”.

The incident with Lossl was not seen by the referee or his assistants at the time but was caught on video.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner said after the game: "I will never say someone likes to hurt an opponent on purpose but to be honest it looks like this is the case. It should never happen.

“It looks very ugly from my point of view. I was a striker and I know Jonas was on the ball - so what you have to do is not touch him.”

But Pellegrino defended his player, saying: "I didn’t observe any intention on the part of my player.

“I don’t think Charlie went intentionally at this moment.”

Charlie Austin charged with violent conduct and faces festive ban

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has been charged by the Football Association with violent conduct after kicking out at the head of Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Jonas Lossl during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

Austin was not punished for the incident during the match, with Lossl left with a suspected broken nose after being caught in the face by the boot of Austin after gathering a loose ball, and could now face a retrospective three-game ban if found guilty.

The 28-year-old scored his fifth goal in five starts for Southampton, only to leave the field shortly after half-time with a hamstring injury, and he has been given until 5pm on Christmas Eve to respond to the charge.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed that Austin is likely to miss the rest of the festive period anyway due to the injury, but the FA could yet ban him regardless.

Pellegrino’s opposite number David Wagner was not impressed by Austin’s actions and labelled it a “nasty challenge” that “should never happen”.

“After seeing the video footage, this should usually never happen, that an opponent hurts another opponent on purpose,” Wagner said.

"I don’t like to say this, but it looks this way. Jonas as well was absolutely surprised. This was a nasty challenge and nothing I like to see.

“I think he looks like this challenge was very ugly and nasty. This should never happen. Charlie Austin made the wrong decision in this moment.”

Austin’s absence –whether injury or disciplinary related – will leave Pellegrino in a tricky position selection-wise as both Shane Long and Massimo Gabbiadini – his two logical replacements – have three goals between them this season, with the former having not found the back of the net since last February.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Claims of huge breakthrough, £70m deal now ‘will’ go through

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk was a top target for the Reds in the summer but no deal went through.

Liverpool were forced into an embarrassing public apology to Southampton after being accused of tapping up the player.

He ended up staying put at St Mary’s but could now be on the move in January.

Irish newspaper the Sunday World report Liverpool have made a major breakthrough in their pursuit of the Dutch defender.

It’s claimed the Kop WILL now sign the 26-year-old in January after a structured payments deal which meets Saints’ £70m valuation was thrashed out in the last week.

THE VERDICT: Not a very Merry Christmas for Saints

Show/hide article…

Merry Christmas. Well not really for Saints fans.

The big day comes at the halfway point of the Premier League season, and there is little cheer around St Mary’s at the moment.

Instead there is growing concern over where Saints are heading, both in a general sense as a club and, more pressingly, on the pitch.

Just four wins all season – with 11 played at home already meaning a very tough second half of the campaign - and those against mainly teams in some sort of crisis, just three points off the bottom three and with the looming reality that with games away to Tottenham and Manchester United up next they could even end the year in the relegation places.

Ladle onto that the Virgil van Dijk situation and uncertainty surrounding the direction of the club with so many unanswered questions over Saints’ direction of travel and intentions of the fairly new ownership.

There is a lot more than just turkey for the Saints hierarchy to chew over this Christmas Day.

A draw against Huddersfield was just the latest in a string of disappointing results.

Saints have wandered close to the cliff edge, peered over and taken a few steps back towards safety several times over the past year or so.

They did it again when they defeated Everton, and you felt the script was written that, after five winless games since that victory, it would be the same against Huddersfield.

That was even more the case when it became clear how adventurous Huddersfield would be at St Mary’s, a brave tactic indeed, and one that, ultimately, was deservedly rewarded.

The day started ominously when van Dijk wasn’t even in the squad.

Pellegrino didn’t really offer up much by way of explanation, but with the January transfer window about to open, it’s pretty easy to work out what most people will be thinking.

However, this was still Huddersfield, and a game that even given a couple of injuries, looked like three points on offer for Saints.

It was Huddersfield, though, who certainly had the better of the first half.

They really should have taken the lead before Saints got in front.

Three balls in from the right in the opening 15 minutes all created chances with which they might have scored.

The first saw Rajiv van La Parra hit a poorly timed shot that was blocked, the second saw Aaron Mooy take too long to get the ball out of his feet and Steven Davis intercept his effort, while Christopher Schindler’s header was well saved by Fraser Forster.

Saints certainly could have considered themselves fortunate to get the lead, via a set piece, on 24 minutes.

James Ward-Prowse’s outswinging corner was headed off target by Wesley Hoedt but found Charlie Austin, whose stopping header was a simple finish from close range.

They were even luckier to still have 11 men on the pitch as Austin inexplicably left a boot in as Jonas Lossl dived to mop up a loose pass.

There was no need for it and, despite Austin pleading his innocence, it looked very bad, and left the Huddersfield keeper with blood pouring from his nose.

The sense of injustice grew for Huddersfield as Schindler spurned another great chance, putting wide a free header from ten yards out.

Saints did test Lossl a few times just before the break with the keeper showing bravery to save at close range from Dusan Tadic, while making routine stops from Austin and Nathan Redmond.

With Huddersfield willing to press higher up the field than most teams at St Mary’s, Saints appeared to make a tactical switch at the break.

They sat deeper, trying to draw Huddersfield onto them confident they could launch counter attacks.

It almost paid off on the hour mark when Redmond did a brilliant job of beating one man and drawing out the other before squaring to Austin in time and space 12 yards out.

He controlled and had the chance to pick his spot but fired wide.

The danger of the tactic was that it invited Huddersfield on and they took advantage by equalising on 64 minutes.

Tommy Smith delivered a right wing cross, Laurent Depoitre got in behind Maya Yoshida and ahead of Jack Stephens and had the simple task of heading home from a few yards out.

It proved to be a decisive moment.

Saints had a couple more chances but weren’t able to take them.

Lossl’s poor goal kick was intercepted by Austin, whose fierce shot was saved by the keeper, but at a cost as the Saints striker limped off.

In the final moments Ward-Prowse delivered a free kick that found the unmarked head of Yoshida just inside the area but he hit the post, with the ball rebounding off of the unwitting Lossl and away.

A few boos rung around the ground at the final whistle, but there was more despondency than anger amongst those that hadn’t already headed for the exit.
