Who will Chelsea sign this summer? £120m Premier League duo top Antonio Conte’s wish list

Show/hide article…

The Italian manager will be looking to bolster his squad ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign. And with his three-at-the-back formation, centre-back is an obvious need with captain John Terry set to depart in the summer. Conte will also look to pick up another attacker as Michy Batshuayi has failed to impress in his first season at Stamford Bridge since joining from Marseille last summer.

And the Mirror say he’s already got two names in mind when the transfer window opens in July. Their report claims Toffees ace Lukaku is Conte’s top priority along with injured defender Van Dijk. Neither player will come cheap though and if Chelsea are to land both players, they’ll likely need to spend around £120m. Conte reckons his squad is a work in progress and he’ll need time to assemble the right group of players.

“We are in a period of transition” “We are in a period of transition,” he said. “In this season, we have lost Ivanovic, Mikel and next season we lose John Terry. “We are talking about players who wrote the history of this club. They won a lot. Now we have to find the right substitutes for these players and then work to put these players at the same level. “We are building something important. We need time. It’s not easy when you lose these type of players but we need to show patience to build the foundations and then improve every season.”

Ex-Saints boss hits out at Jeff Stelling for ‘lack of respect’

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints boss Dave Jones hit back at TV personality and Hartlepool United club President Jeff Stelling - accusing him of “a lack of respect” and talking “rubbish”.

Jones, who parted company with League 2 strugglers Pools last night, had been angered by the comments of the Sky Sports presenter.

Winchester-based Stelling demanded Jones either quit or was sacked after Pools dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday evening.

Stelling pulled no punches on Gillette Soccer Saturday, saying: “It’s not personal Dave, but for God’s sake, for the good of the club go now.

“Walk now. It’s 13 points from 51 this is not your level of football.

“[Finance director] Pam Duxbury, the chairman, Gary Coxall, if he won’t walk then sack him … do it today.”

Speaking after Saurday’s 3-0 loss at Crewe - which dumped Pools in the drop zone with just two games remaining to save their Football League lives - Jones was determined to fight on and was unhappy with Stelling’s outburst.

“It’s OK Jeff Stelling saying it in his comfy chair. He doesn’t know.

“In fact it’s a lack of respect for me. Why should he say that?

“But I’m not listening to people like that, sitting there and judging people. He’s not aware of what’s going on.”

Jones, who was only appointed Pools boss in January of this year, added that he felt the 62-year-old TV star was abusing his position by passing comment and instead should have been supporting him.

Four times he mentioned the expression “lack of respect” as he came fighting back in what he says is the most difficult situation in his managerial career.

“Don’t forget I’m putting my neck on the line here,” said the man who was in charge of Saints between June 1997 and January 2000.

“It’s my reputation, don’t say I don’t care, I do care – a lot.

“You get the stupid comments that ‘you’ve got no passion’ and all this crap that goes with it. That’s rubbish, that’s not right.

“Then you get people like Jeff Stelling passing comments like that because he’s on national TV. “So he’s right? No he’s not. He’s no right to say it.

“I never criticise him when he makes a mistake or whatever.“He’s such a big hero, but I’ll go up against him.

“Does he say it about anyone else? Wenger? It’s not his job, his job is to report.

“He hasn’t phoned me – a few weeks ago he’s sat in my office crowing about us going five games without losing, how we’ve changed it around.

“What’s changed? I haven’t changed or has he forgotten that?

“I’m fighting for my life, how about a bit of support Jeff, rather than the rubbish you are giving out?”

Southampton star makes huge Virgil van Dijk claim: Chelsea fans will love this

Show/hide article…

The £50m-rated centre-back has been linked with a summer exit, despite not playing since January with an ankle injury. Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton are all tracking the Holland international. The Blues are currently leading the race for the 25-year-old, with Antonio Conte desperate to land a centre-back this summer.

“Even going into the Champions League clubs, he is one of the best and right up there for me” John Terry is off at the end of the season, and although Andreas Christiansen is returning from a two-year loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, Chelsea are keen on adding another defender. And Van Dijk’s team-mate Bertrand has hailed the 25-year-old, claiming he is better than every defender at the clubs battling for Champions League football. “For me, he is number one,” Bertrand told Goal.

"Number one in the Premier League. Even going into the Champions League clubs, he is one of the best and right up there for me. "Having played right next to him and seen his capabilities, I know that he is right up there. “He has got pace, strength and technical ability. He reads the game well and he is great and very reliable to play alongside.”

Bertrand: Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is No 1 in the Premier League

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand has lavished praise on his Southampton team-mate Virgil van Dijk, labelling him one of the best defenders in the world.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s in the summer, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool among those interested, while Southampton are desperate to keep hold of their star man.

Bertrand is one of the Saints players keen to keep playing alongside Van Dijk, and speaking to Goal he said of his team-mate: 'For me, he is No 1.

'No 1 in the Premier League. Even going into the Champions League clubs, he is one of the best and right up there for me.

‘Having played right next to him and seen his capabilities, I know that he is right up there. He has got pace, strength and technical ability. He reads the game well and he is great and very reliable to play alongside.’

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic in 2015, costing the south-coast club a record £13million.

That fee is likely to turn out to be a bargain come the summer, with plenty of top clubs sniffing around for his signature.

He has been one of the main reasons Southampton have impressed so much this season, with Claude Puel’s side currently sitting ninth in the Premier League.

James Ward-Prowse is another star of Saints’ season, and Bertrand said of the young midfielder: 'He has done very well. The likes of him and Redmond have come in and they have done amazingly well.

‘They have got their rewards with a call up to the [England] senior team. They have taken those chances, so they are great commodities for Southampton.’

Chelsea and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk ‘ready for move to top club’, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers tells

Show/hide article…

Chelsea and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk is ready to take the next step in his career and join one of the Premier League’s top clubs, according to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Van Dijk joined current club Southampton after an impressive spell for the Scottish champions, and is now being chased by some of England’s biggest teams.

The majority of the Premier League’s big guns will be looking to strengthen their defences this season, with Manchester City and Manchester United also linked with the 25-year-old Dutchman, while Inter Milan are also said to be interested.

Southampton have reportedly already begun a search for his replacement, meaning it is almost certain the in-demand star will leave St Mary’s in the upcoming transfer window.

And Rodgers insists the former Celtic man – who has missed half the season and is still sidelined with a foot injury he suffered in January – is more than ready.

Asked if Van Dijk is good enough for one of the Premier League’s top clubs, Rodgers told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Well he certainly looks it.

“The problem sometimes for some of the guys playing up here for Celtic is that people were thinking that they were only playing in Scottish football, which is of course a less competitive league than the Premier League.

“But if you’re doing it at a European level for Celtic and you’re playing under the pressure for Celtic, then you have to have something about you.

“I speak to the guys at the club who have worked with Virgil van Dijk, and he’s always had those qualities. It’s just up to someone to take that punt on him.

“He’s 6ft 4in, he’s fast, he can play, he’s an international footballer, he’s good in the air – he’s got everything. You saw that in a player like Wanyama when he was up here as well, you know they’re a top player.

“Virgil is at a great club, let’s not forget, Southampton is a fantastic club, and if he left there then of course it would have to be what you would consider to be one of the top four or top six clubs.”

Puel: Romeu is as good as Kante

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel believes Saints’ Oriol Romeu is of a similar standard to Chelsea’s newly-crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year N’Golo Kante.

Kante has been one of the most exceptional players in the Premier League over the past two seasons and is now aiming for his second title with Chelsea, having won the top-flight with Leicester in his first campaign in England.

Frenchman Puel has compared his compatriot Kante to his own defensive midfielder, Romeu, and reckons there isn’t too much to choose between the pair.

“It’s an important player for this team because he can do fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play,” he said about Kante.

“For me N’Golo is the same quality of Romeu with us.

“It’s an important to player and without him for Chelsea it’s difficult and the same with Romeu, it’s difficult for us without him.”

The Spaniard has been one of the stand-out players for Saints this term and will return to duty at Chelsea tomorrow night after serving a two-match suspension.

“I think he’s not far off Kante,” he said. “If we see the quality of his games since the beginning of the season, for me, he [Romeu] is not far off Kante because he’s very consistent and every game he gives good performances, with consistency and quality.

“[Romeu] is strong on the recovery of the ball and has a lot of qualities to start on the ball.

“He’s very good player for me and the same level [as Kante].

“We will see for the future, we are confident in him and, for me, he can look to a selection with Spain, for example.”
