Newcastle United won promotion back the Premier League last night as they defeated Preston North End 4-1 at St James’ Park.

But, perhaps surprisingly with just four games remaining for some top-flight teams, they have become just the tenth club to confirm their place for the 2017/18 season.

Some of this is down to the race for survival hotting up, especially since were wins for Crystal Palace, Hull City, and Swansea at the weekend, dragging more teams into the relegation rumble.

Romeu: Puel is helping me lead Southampton

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu says manager Claude Puel is helping him to improve as a midfielder at Southampton.

Ahead of Southampton’s trip to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening, Romeu tells NBC Sports how his manager, who was a defensive midfielder in his playing days, is teaching him at St Mary’s Stadium.

“He is always trying to help me with the structure of the team,” Romeu told NBC’s Joe Prince-Wright.

"As a midfielder you always have players around yourself. If I can help the team to get tactically ready, it helps the team a lot.

“We know in this league that sometimes the team gets unorganised and everyone is out of their place. Basically, in me he wants to have someone who makes sure everyone is back in their place and the team is ready to go again.”

In the exclusive interview Romeu also talks about his time at Chelsea, his upbringing in Catalonia and his ambitions with Southampton.

How Chelsea’s incredibly fortunate injury record has swung the title race

Show/hide article…

When illness was reported to have run through the Chelsea squad before their recent defeat to Manchester United, many felt as though the wheels may be coming off their Premier League challenge.

Antonio Conte declared the title race “50-50” after Tottenham closed the gap at the top to four points, but this has been Chelsea’s title for months now and their fate is still very much in their own hands.

Conte has been fortunate in that he has been able to consistently select his favoured starting lineup throughout the campaign. When Marcos Alonso’s absence upset the balance of the team at Old Trafford, their inadequacies were laid bare.

But that has not been a problem Chelsea have had to contend with on many occasions. They have been extremely lucky with injuries all year.

As data from Premierinjuries.com shows, between 13 August 2016 and 19 April 2017, Chelsea’s players have suffered just 18 ‘serious’ injuries, where we define ‘serious’ as resulting in at least 10 days on the sidelines. Of all Premier League team only West Brom, with 12, have had to deal with fewer than Chelsea.

PHOTOS: Saints came away with three points last time they visited Chelsea… Can they do it again?

Show/hide article…

Saints secured a stunning victory over Premier League champions Chelsea to claim their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2002.

Ronald Koeman’s men were full value for their 3-1 triumph, which came via goals from Steven Davis, Sadio Mane and Grazniano Pelle after Willian had given the Blues an early lead.

It was a high quality start to the match with two good teams playing some confident football.

Both sides were happy to keep the ball at the back and try and build, but also to break with pace.

Chelsea did exactly that on nine minutes and it resulted in an early booking for former Blues man Oriol Romeu for a blatant trip on Eden Hazard.

It proved costly too as Willian scored directly from the left wing free kick.

He hit an inswinger with his right foot that was flighted high.

Maarten Stekelenburg was perhaps anticipating the cross and was too far off his line to be able to dive and make the save with the ball going in via inside of the far post.

Dusan Tadic picked up the ball in a central area 25 yards out and committed several Chelsea defenders towards him before switching it outside to the right and Steven Davis.

He had enough space to take a touch to control and line up a shot from just inside the area but he sliced it horribly wide of the near post.

Up the other end Oscar tried his luck from 20 yards out but blazed over.

Hazard was the next to have a go but his low strike was straight down the middle and comfortable for Stekelenburg.

Chelsea were starting to look very dangerous and some neat interplay gave Oscar the chance to shoot in the box but it ended up a relatively simple stop for Stekelenburg.

Ryan Bertrand was the next player in the book after bringing down Willian following a bit of rough and tumble between the pair.

Saints had strong appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Robert Madley on 33 minutes as Sadio Mane cut outside Ramires and he burst into the top left hand corner of the area. The Chelsea midfielder swung a leg to try and reach the ball and Mane hit the deck.

Though Mane did go down theatrically, replays clearly showed contact as Ramires hacked towards the ball but only got the Saints man.

A minute later Mane looked hopefully towards Madley again, but this time was booked for a perceived dive after a challenge by Branislav Ivanovic, who had got away with one earlier after clearly pulling down Virgil van Dijk in a crowded Chelsea penalty area.

Asmir Begovic had to be alert to keep out Victor Wanyama’s left wing cross that threatened to drop in but showed good athleticism to turn it wide.

Saints were enjoying a terrific spell before half time and Begovic had to be on form again as Mane threaded a pass that put Bertrand in behind but the Blues stopper rushed from his line and stayed big to block the shot from a tight angle before Ramires collected a yellow card.

A minute before the break Saints got the equaliser they had richly deserved.

It was basic but effective football.

A free kick just inside the Saints half was played square to Jose Fonte, he lofted it high to Graziano Pelle who was strong and chested it square to Steven Davis who struck a peach of a right footed half volley from just outside the area that whistled into the bottom corner.

Both sides made a change at the break with James Ward-Prowse and Nemanja Matic replacing Romeu and Ramires.

Saints started the second half firing and had a couple of chances to take the lead.

The first saw Mane picked out in the area by Tadic but Begovic spread himself wide to make the save. The second was created by fantastic skill from Tadic and a cut back from the left by-line to Mane whose shot was blocked in the area before Ward-Prowse put the follow-up wide.

Chelsea had their turn to have a penalty shout turned down as Radamel Falcao went down under the challenge of Stekelenburg who dive din at his feet. Falcao was going down already but there was clear contact, making a booking for diving look a little harsh.

Saints stunned Chelsea by taking the lead on the hour mark.

Pelle played an incisive pass that John Terry couldn’t cut out and Mane spun in behind. His shot was half saved by the legs of Begovic but had enough on it to get over the line.

It made little difference though as Saints made it 3-1 with a stunning counter attack on 72 minutes.

Mane picked the ball up deep in his own half and flew up the middle of the pitch and played the ball to his left and Pelle. He took the ball on in the area and then drilled an unstoppable low right footed shot across goal and into the far corner.

Chelsea made their final change moments later with Loic Remy coming on for Matic.

Mane was causing mayhem and after getting to the left by-line cut back to Tadic who picked the wrong option, choosing to hold the ball and then shoot and was closed down.

Jay Rodriguez was the next Saints change as he replaced Tadic before Maya Yoshida came on for Mane.

Falcao threatened with a 20 yard free kick that flicked the top of the wall and went over but otherwise Saints saw it out with relative comfort to complete a memorable win.

Former England and Premier League star heroically saves children from yacht

Show/hide article…

Former England international James Beattie has heroically saved two children from a crashed boat.

The ex-Southampton, Everton and Rangers striker acted quickly after the yacht had smashed into a chain ferry just off glamorous Sandbanks, near Bournemouth, Dorset.

Beattie answered a desperate pleas of “get my children off” from the boat’s female captain - who feared the 25ft boat would sink.

Beattie, who is currently a first team coach at Leeds, jumped over a security barrier to rush to the aide of the youngsters to help pull them off the stricken vessel.

Ashley Jacobs, who was on a nearby small boat when he witnessed the drama unfold, tweeted the former England player afterwards, saying: “Hats off to you mate, I was on the red boat. Did well to get the kids off…top stuff.”

Beattie, 38, replied: “Current too strong for that little yacht. Glad the family are OK. Acted on instinct while too many people get their phones out to video. Crazy!”

Ashley added to the Southern Daily Echo : “We didn’t know what it was at first but then saw a small yacht getting dragged into the chain ferry,” he said. "We are just a small boat so we couldn’t offer a tow but we stayed on standby just in case one of the children went into the water. I saw a number of people on the chain ferry rushing to help, one of which was James Beattie.

"He got hold of the children when other people were just standing about watching, so credit to him for that.

“He did really well, he leant over the edge and got the children to safety. He did really well.”

Beattie played five times for the Three Lions before taking charge of League Two Accrington Stanley for 16 months in 2013.

James Beattie helps saves children from stricken yacht in Poole

Show/hide article…

This is the dramatic moment former England footballer James Beattie helped rescue two young children and their mother from a yacht after it collided with a ferry.

The ex-Everton and Rangers striker leapt into action when he heard a woman shout out ‘get my children off’ as she feared the 25ft yacht was about to sink.

Mr Beattie, 38, and three other passengers jumped a barrier at the end of the small car ferry, rushed forward to the edge of a ramp and hauled the crying children to safety.

Their shaken mother was then helped off the stricken yacht.

A passing boat threw a line to man left on board, thought to be the father of the children, and towed it clear in time.
