Sofiane Boufal’s agent reveals Southampton man had Fiorentina and Inter Milan after him in the summer

Show/hide article…

The agent of Southampton star Sofiane Boufal has claimed that both Fiorentina and Inter Milan wanted to sign him during the summer.

The 24-year-old scored a stunning goal against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, and his representative has revealed to SFR Sport 1 that Boufal had the option to leave St. Mary’s during the summer window.

“He feels good now, he’s just waiting to play more,” Yvan Le Mée said.

"In August we had clubs like Inter, Fiorentina and Celta Vigo, who know what they’re doing when it comes to buying players, who all wanted to buy him at any cost.

“Southampton said no though, and now he’s proving he’s someone who can win points.”

Jimmy Case: Beware of the Seagulls!

Show/hide article…

JIMMY Case believes Brighton and Hove Albion can challenge Saints for south-coast bragging rights this season.

Not since 2010/11, when they were promoted behind League One champions Brighton into the Championship, where they joined Pompey, have Saints finished below any of their south-coast rivals.

AFC Bournemouth came close last year, only finishing below Saints on goal difference.

Now newly-promoted Brighton are aiming to go above Mauricio Pellegrino’s side by beating them at the Amex on Sunday.

“It’s very nice to see them in the top flight after what they’ve been through,” said Case, who played for Brighton when they were last in the top flight in the early Eighties.

Case returned as a 39 year-old player, before a brief spell as manager when Brighton were battling for their Football League status in the mid-Nineties.

“For several years, starting soon after I moved from Brighton to Saints in 1984, Brighton were against it,” continued Case, who admits “it’s a bit strange” to see his three former south-coast clubs in the top flight together for the first time.

“Brighton supporters have been looking forward to this for a long time. I bumped into some the other day reminding me about my free kick at Sheffield Wednesday in the 1983 FA Cup semi-final.

“But my second spell there was a horrendous time for the club. It’s a similar story to Bournemouth, whose facilities now are out of this world. When I was there they didn’t have much more than a lawnmower!

“Playing at Gillingham - after their [Goldstone] ground was sold with nowhere for the club to go - was bad enough for Brighton.

“Then they had ten years at Withdean, which just wasn’t adequate at all. But they’ve grown in stature to the point where they are now in the Premier League at the Amex.”

Brighton are averaging crowds of more than 30,000 this season, more than double their average top-flight attendance in 1979-83 (they finished below Saints in each of their four seasons in the old first division).

Saints’ visit will be Brighton’s first game since their eye-catching 3-0 win at West Ham last Friday.

“Brighton have got Crystal Palace coming up and to be honest that’s the derby that tends to be most niggly for them and the team they really don’t want to lose to,” continued Case.

“Brighton v Palace is like Liverpool v Everton and Saints v Pompey. They really dislike each other.”

Saints v Brighton was developing into a feisty derby in its own right when they were familiar adversaries in League One and the Championship.

Six seasons ago, Saints’ only previous visit to the Amex ended in a 3-0 defeat, a game both sides finished with ten men.

Premier League survival will constitute a successful season for Brighton, but the Seagulls will be targeting their highest-ever top-flight finish (currently their 13th place in 1981/82).

“Brighton have been a breath of fresh air, as have Newcastle and Huddersfield, the other promoted clubs,” continued Case.

”They have a collective spirit under Chris Hughton and they defend well so there’s no reason why they can’t hold their own.

“Southampton just aren’t creating enough but after the result against West Brom hopefully they’ll start getting some momentum.

“They’ve played most of their games at home but will have more space away from St Mary’s. It will certainly be an interesting game on Sunday.”

Leicester could name Claude Puel as boss in the next 48 hours

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is closing in on the Leicester manager job after holding two positive interviews with club hierarchy.

The Frenchman is at the stage of discussing assistants and could be named as Craig Shakespeare’s successor in the next 48 hours.

Michael Appleton’s position as No 2 is part of negotiations but it is thought Puel would also like to bring Pascal Plancque, who was an assistant at Southampton.

Sporting director Jon Rudkin has led Leicester’s search for a third manager in eight months following the sackings of Shakespeare and Claudio Ranieri and has been impressed by Puel.

The 56-year-old Frenchman was dismissed by Southampton in June after one season which saw them finish eighth and reach the League Cup final.

But supporters were underwhelmed by the style of play and Puel’s reserved public persona, while Southampton lost 16 Premier League games to only end up six points above 17th.

Leicester have looked beyond that campaign alone to Puel’s work at Lyon, where he guided the team to a first Champions League semi-final and brought through young players. He also won Ligue 1 with Monaco in 2000.

Appleton, who has won both his games as caretaker manager, said at present he expects to pick the team against Everton on Sunday but appreciates circumstances may change soon.

The 41-year-old, who left his role as Oxford manager to become Shakespeare’s No 2 this summer, said: ‘It’s been a big of a rollercoaster, to say the least. It’s been a difficult week, no doubt about that, to lose your manager.

'It certainly would have been a lot tougher had we not won the last two games. We’ve tried to stay in a positive frame of mind and stay professional.

‘When I first spoke to the powers-that-be, it was a matter of taking every game as it comes and making sure the lads are prepared as best as they can be. I’m sure I’ll have more information over the coming days and weeks.

‘As it stands, I’m expecting to take the team on Sunday but ultimately I know things can move quickly, or slowly, depending on situations. I’m not thinking that far ahead.’

Puel favourite for Leicester job

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is reportedly close to becoming Leicester’s new manager.

The Frenchman, who was sacked by Saints in the summer after a season in which the team finished eighth and reached the EFL Cup final, has spoken at least once with Leicester’s hierarchy, who ideally would like a new manager in place for the Premier League game against Everton at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Caretaker boss Michael Appleton left his position as manager of League One club Oxford in June to join Shakespeare’s staff on a three-year contract and hopes to keep his job when the new manager is appointed.

“Things can move very, very quickly and I will wait to hear from the owners about what is going to happen,” said Appleton after Leicester reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with a 3-1 home win against Leeds.

"The powers that be will keep me informed of anything, whether that is over the next few days, weeks or whatever.

"The reality is, and I keep saying it, I came in to do a job as assistant and hopefully I get the opportunity to do that.

"It’s difficult to say I haven’t enjoyed it (being a manager again) when you’ve had two wins but that wasn’t the role that I came here to Leicester to do.

“It’s a role I’m comfortable with but I came here as assistant manager and I’d be absolutely delighted if Craig was still sat here and we’d beaten Swansea and got through to the last eight (of the cup).”

Goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, his first for the club, Islam Slimani and substitute Riyad Mahrez saw Leicester come from behind to beat Leeds, who went in front through Pablo Hernandez’s strike.
