Long reveals the secret to beating Liverpool: ‘Force them out wide’

Show/hide article…

Shane Long has revealed how teams are getting the better of Liverpool after his last-minute goal confirmed Southampton’s place in the final of the EFL Cup.

Long’s winner sets up a Wembley final for the Saints, with Manchester United or Hull awaiting at the end of February.

Their Anfield win consigned Liverpool to a second home defeat in a row, and took their run of poor form to one win in their first seven games of 2017.

Speaking after the game Long gave some insight into how manager Claude Puel had masterminded their victory.

‘Keeping a clean sheet against Liverpool is no mean feat,’ he said.

‘I think it came from the whole team trying to force them out wide and not letting them make passes through the middle to get one-on-ones with the keeper.’

Liverpool’s run of poor form has coincided with the loss of Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Natons, with Klopp’s side lacking his pace and cutting edge.

The run of bad form started with his last game before jetting off to Gabon, a 2-2 draw with Sunderland on January 2, which kicked-off less than 48 hours after a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

The Reds are winless in their three Premier League games since beating City on New Year’s Eve, and now badly need a win when they host Wolves in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

League leaders Chelsea visit on Tuesday, with the chance to extend their already daunting 10-point lead at the top.

UPDATE AND PHOTOS: Post boxes painted red and white after Saints reach Wembley final

Show/hide article…

Two post boxes have been painted in Saints colours after they reached their first major final in 14 years last night.

Shane Long’s stoppage-time strike saw the Saints march past Liverpool to book their place at Wembley in next month’s EFL Cup final, with two Royal Mail post boxes having white stripes painted down them in celebration.

With one on Queensway and another by the Bargate in the centre, it has divided opinion on whether it’s a form of celebration, or vandalism.

Graham Paul, 26, a barman from the city centre said: “It’s beautiful to me. I think two is probably enough, but they’re celebrating the achievement and that’s what counts. It’s not every day you reach a major final.”

Jeffrey Vigar, 75, retired from Bevois Valley said: “It is vandalism. Yes I’m proud of the team but it’s the taxpayers who have to pay for this to be cleaned up now.”

However, Royal Mail have confirmed they will be removing the stripes from the post boxes.

A spokesman said: “We congratulate Southampton FC on their success however will be returning the post boxes to their original colour as soon as it is reasonably possible."

After beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield to secure a 2-0 aggregate win, the Saints will play the winners of Hull and Manchester United in the other semi-final at Wembley on February 26.

Le Tissier pays tribute to defence

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier lauded the efforts of Southampton’s players to keep Liverpool out over two games during their 2-0 aggregate semi-final win in the EFL Cup.

Saints won both matches at home and at Anfield by a 1-0 scoreline, as they kept Jürgen Klopp’s side at bay over 180 minutes of football, and Le Tissier felt the shut out on Merseyside was a particularly impressive performance.

“It probably means more for Southampton than it would do for Liverpool to get to that final and I think you could see that in the players’ efforts out there tonight,” he told Sky Sports.

“They gave every single thing they had and there’s some proper heroes out there defensively. Yes, we’ve created a lot of chances over the two legs, and we’ve missed a few, but when you go through the whole tournament without conceding a goal then you’ve got to do that with some good defenders in your side.

“We did it without probably our Player of the Season – Virgil van Dijk – who has barely been mentioned because of the fantastic job that Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida did in the centre back positions.”

Le Tissier said Stephens should take pride in his performance after being put in to fill the void left by Van Dijk.

“The two centre-backs were just outstanding and the pair of them barely put a foot wrong,” said the Saints legend.

“Jack to do that on just his fourth start, he looked pretty composed, put himself in all the right places and put his body on the line. For a young lad it was a really mature performance from him tonight.

“This is going to do the boy a world of good for his confidence to come to Anfield and keep a clean sheet in the semi-final when all the pressure is on I can just see this boy going from strength to strength on the back of it.”

Boss of FA Cup heroes will be at Wembley supporting Saints

Show/hide article…

Sutton face the toughest challenge yet in their memorable FA Cup run on Sunday - but boss Paul Doswell is already planning for Wembley.

The Vanarama National League giant killers have already seen off Cheltenham and AFC Wimbledon on their way to a money-spinning fourth-round clash at home to Premier League hopefuls Leeds.

But Sutton fans need not worry that Doswell is getting ahead of himself, as the die-hard Southampton fan will be following his boyhood club in the EFL Cup final at the end of February.

In fact Sutton’s cup heroics are the only reason Doswell was not in attendance at Anfield on Wednesday night as Saints sank Liverpool in the semi-final.

Yet the 50-year-old still had to admit he was watching the Southampton game rather than running the rule over Leeds, who were beating Nottingham Forest at the same time.

“Yes, I’ll be there at Wembley all day long,” said Doswell. "In fact there will be about 40 of us heading over.

"I was going to go, I had tickets, but that was on the assumption that we weren’t going to beat Wimbledon to be honest. I’d even booked a hotel.

"But because of the importance of what is coming up I stayed at home and watched it on the TV. My son went instead.

“Then I was so excited that Saints had got through that I couldn’t sleep, so I watched the Leeds game at 3am.”

Doswell is also looking forward to meeting up with Leeds boss Garry Monk and coach James Beattie, who are friends from their time on the south coast.

“Garry has done a fantastic job there in very difficult circumstances and hopefully they give them the time to get them back to where they belong,” he added.

"I know Garry from when he was a young defender at Southampton and Beats I know well.

“He’s a very good friend. The last time I saw him was in a nightclub so it will be good to meet up with him in a football environment.”

Football droughts – Southampton’s Wembley wait is over, but for Liverpool, Tottenham and more the agony goes on

Show/hide article…

Southampton secured a place in their first Wembley final in 38 years when they beat Liverpool on Wednesday night to reach the EFL Cup final.

It was a momentous night for the Saints, and they will be playing either Manchester United or Hull City as they look to win just the second major honour in their history – the other coming 41 years ago.

But while 38/41 years may seem a long time, the Saints aren’t alone in undergoing a drought. Indeed, for some teams the dry period has lasted much longer.

Hibernian, for example, went 114 years between winning Scottish Cups, playing 10 finals since their victory in 1902 – losing all 10 – before winning the trophy in 2016.

Similarly, Inter Milan had to wait 45 years between winning their second European Cup, in 1965, and their third, which they did by beating Bayern Munich in the 2010 Champions League Final.

But there are plenty of footbal droughts yet to be broken. Click the right arrow, above, to see talkSPORT’s list of seven teams looking to break unwanted records…
