Southampton v Leicester City preview: Steven Davis misses out

Show/hide article…

Southampton will be looking to snap their worst losing run since December 2014 when Leicester City visit St Mary’s, live on Nissan Super Sunday.

The 1-0 defeat at Burnley last weekend was Southampton’s fourth Premier League loss in a row - they haven’t lost five on the spin since the opening five games of the 1998/99 season.

Goals have been a big issue for Claude Puel’s men, only Middlesbrough (17) have scored fewer than their tally of 19 this campaign.

Last season’s Premier League champions Leicester are still without an away win in the league this term.

The only reigning top-flight champion to have fewer points after 21 games than Leicester have currently are Ipswich Town in 1962/63 (18, assuming three points for a win).

Steven Davis remains sidelined for the clash after failing to recover from a knock sustained in the defeat at Burnley.

However, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand, who weren’t risked in midweek against Norwich, are back in contention.

Sofiane Boufal, Charlie Austin, Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett and Jake Hesketh all are out injured.

Leonardo Ulloa will miss the game as he struggles to shake off a thigh injury.

The striker has handed in a transfer request following an offer from Spanish side Alaves but the Premier League champions want to keep the 30-year-old.

Defender Luis Hernandez is in Spain to finalise a move to Malaga but boss Claudio Ranieri has no fresh injury worries.

Southampton have won just one of their last seven league meetings with Leicester (D2 L4), including two defeats in the Sky Bet Championship in 2011/12

However, Leicester have never won a Premier League game at St Mary’s (D3 L1), last beating Southampton away in the competition 2-1 at the Dell in April 2000

Southampton have the lowest shot conversion rate of any Premier League side this season (6.1 per cent)

The Foxes are still waiting for the first away league win since April 2016 (D5 L7)

There’s no doubt in my mind that Southampton will have one eye on next week’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool. They are 90 minutes away from a cup final at Wembley and they can’t help but have an eye on Jurgen Klopp’s men.

This will be an entertaining game though because I can’t see either side sitting back. I’m still going to go for Southampton in this one because I’ve been very disappointed in Leicester.

Southampton are Sky Bet’s 4/5 favourites for the victory with Leicester 19/5 while the draw is priced at 12/5. The bookies are considering this very much a mid-table battle, with the Saints 4/9 to finish in the top 10 while their visitors are now out to 2/1.

Puel is not offered much help in picking his first-choice striker with Jay Rodriquez and Shane Long tied at the head of the first goalscorer market at 4/1, while Jamie Vardy is rated the Foxes’ main threat at 13/2 to net first.

West Ham set to announce new signing within 24 hours: Deal has been agreed - sources

Show/hide article…

Starsport understand a deal has already been agreed and an announcement will be made within the next 24 hours.

Fonte, 33, is the last remaining member of the Saints side that rose from the League One to the Premier League.

But he has made no secret of his desire to move on since winning Euro 2016 with Portugal.

He last week handed in a transfer request and Manchester United were among those linked to the unsettled defender.

Fonte is represented by Jorge Mendes, the super agent who also works for Jose Mourinho.

Puel: We need to be more clinical

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Southampton need to be more ruthless in front of goal when they take on Leicester City at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

Saints have lost four successive Premier League matches but the manager has been encouraged by recent performances.

Puel’s side lost 1-0 at Burnley either side of cup victories by the same scoreline – the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool and a FA Cup fourth round replay with Norwich City – and he said Saints need to convert more of their chances.

"It’s important for us to continue this good play, but also to be clinical, and this at the moment we are lacking that and it’s important to find this,” Puel told southamptonfc.com.

VIDEO: Happy 11th anniversary Theo Walcott! Arsenal forward reaches memorable milestone at the Emirates

Show/hide article…

Today marks the 11th year since Theo Walcott signed for Arsenal.

The Gunners forward joined the north London side from Southampton for a £5million fee as a fresh faced 16-year-old.

During his time at the club, Walcott has racked up 364 appearances while scoring 96 goals in the red of Arsenal. The jet-heeled England international has also picked up two FA Cups under Arsene Wenger.

Having spent a decade at the club, Walcott has become part of the furniture at the Emirates and is seen as one of his side’s most senior players.

And what better way to mark his milestone at the club than with a video of Walcott’s performance in the 2015 FA Cup final against Aston Villa.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte closing in on £9million West Ham move

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Jose Fonte is on the cusp of joining West Ham in a deal worth up to £9million, it is understood.

The 33-year-old, the last remaining member of the Saints side that rose from the League One to the Premier League, has made no secret of his desire to move on since winning Euro 2016 with Portugal.

Manchester United were among those linked to the unsettled defender, who is now set to join West Ham in a deal understood to be worth an £8million deal plus a potential £1million in add-ons.

Fonte, who turned 33 last month, had 18 months left on his deal at St Mary’s.

In December the defender claimed he was “informed by Southampton that they are not offering me a new contract”, but club sources say he rejected a one-year extension.

Saints are understood to be happy for the episode to be drawing to a close and the move to east London could be wrapped up as early as Friday evening.

Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho has been strongly linked as Fonte’s replacement, but Saints manager Claude Puel dismissed it as “speculation” on Thursday.

When asked about a loan bid being rejected for the 26-year-old defender, he said: "I know this player but I know nothing about this, it’s speculation.

"We have a reflection about this possibility to see another centre-back if Jose Fonte left.

"For the moment it’s not the situation, and perhaps we will stay with the same squad, with good opportunities for Jack Stephens or (Florin) Gardos.

“It’s a long time with a lot of injuries for Gardos, but he came back for the Under-23s before this game (against Norwich in the FA Cup) with a good level and we will see if we just have Jack and Florin, or you might see another player if Jose Fonte leaves Southampton.”

Southampton head into the weekend 13th in the Premier League, with West Ham a point better off in 12th.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte finalises personal terms with West Ham as £8 million nears completion

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte has been undergoing a medical and finalising personal terms on a contract until 2019 to join West Ham United from Southampton for an initial £8 million.

The fee could potentially rise by another £1 million depending on future performances and, even after turning 33 last month, the Portugal defender has secured a contract that will span the next three seasons.

Fonte was offered similar security at Southampton – there was the option of an extra season on a deal that expired in 2018 – and the possibility to increase his salary from around £45,000-a-week to £70,000, but he turned that down last summer.

Manchester United and Everton were interested in buying Fonte back then but, with Ronald Koeman instead recruiting Ashley Williams and Jose Mourinho not coming forward with a firm offer, he remained at Southampton, where he was captain.

Fonte was frustrated, though, by manager Claude Puel’s rotation policy and reiterated his desire to leave earlier this month even without the certainty of an offer elsewhere.
