Club Statement

Show/hide article…

I am writing to you in relation to an announcement made in China today about Southampton Football Club and Lander Holding.

Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club. A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey. Together we have had many years of progression and success, and ensuring this continues is the main focus of any possible partnership.

I cannot thank you enough for the continued support you give Southampton Football Club, and it makes me so proud to think we will soon be experiencing a major final together at Wembley. I hope you enjoy what will be a brilliant day for our club and look forward to a successful future together.

A £200MILLION Chinese takeover of Saints is still some way from completion and may not happen at all, the Daily Echo understands.

Media reports suggested that Lander Sports Development had agreed to buy a stake after opening talks with Saints owner Katharina Liebherr over a potential purchase of the club.

The company had entered a six-week exclusivity period in November, although this deadline passed with no formal offer being made.

Katharina Liebherr pens an open letter to Southampton’s fans

Show/hide article…

Katharina Liebherr has moved to reassure Southampton’s fans following the announcement that as stake in the club will be sold to Chinese investors.

Lander Sports Development, the company best known for building stadiums around China, said in a statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Thursday that it had signed an agreement with the Saints’ owner, Liebherr.

Chinese entities and individuals have ploughed more than $3 billion (£240bn) into overseas football investments over the past year or so, encouraged by avid fan President Xi Jinping who wants the country to become a superpower in the world game.

Such aggressive investment has left some Saints fans worried about what the future might hold for their club. Liebherr, though, says the deal was necessary “to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey”.

Below is her letter to fans, in full.

A letter to the fans of Southampton Football Club.

Southampton confirm interest from Chinese investors Lander Sports Development

Show/hide article…

Southampton have reassured fans that the “best interests of the club” have been considered as news emerged of possible Chinese investment.

Stadium builder Lander Sports Development said it had struck a deal with Saints’ owner Katharina Liebherr to buy into the club’s holding company.

Liebherr said: “A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria.”

Chinese companies have also invested in Manchester City and West Brom.

The Saints were rescued from the brink of bankruptcy by German-born Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr in 2009. Katharina inherited the club after her father’s death in 2010 and became non-executive chairman in 2014.

Liebherr, who did not confirm a deal had been agreed, added: “Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club.”

Southampton are 11th in the Premier League.

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr assures fan Chinese sale won’t harm club

Show/hide article…

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr has addressed fans directly, telling them that she will not put in jeopardy their remarkable success of recent years should she sell a stake in the club to the Chinese investors Lander Holdings.

The Chinese group made an announcement to the Shenzhen stock exchange on Thurdsay that they had a deal in principle to buy a stake in Saints, which the club consider to be premature.

The news came after Southampton reached their first final since 2003 beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Wednesday night to secure a place in the League Cup final on Feb 26.

Southampton are still in talks with the over the sale of a stake of the club which has been controlled by the Liebherr family since 2009. The investment, if it is agreed, is expected to be used to bolster Saints’ financial position – they are already arguably the best run club in the top-flight.

Under the Liebherrs’ extraordinary ownership over the last seven years they have risen from League One to finish sixth in the Premier League last season, further establishing themselves as a production line for young British talent and also masters of the transfer market.

In an open letter to Saints fans on the negotiations with Lander Holdings, Liebherr said: “Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club.

"A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

The ticket information you need to know for Wembley

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have been allocated more than 10,000 fewer tickets for the League Cup final at Wembley than they were for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2010.

Over 44,000 followed Saints to the national stadium seven years ago, which was then a joint record for a single club at the arena, as Alan Pardew’s side beat Carlisle 4-1 in front of a total attendance of 73,476.

But under League Cup rules, Saints have been allocated 31,461 tickets for the final on Sunday February 26.

Claude Puel’s side reached the final after beating Liverpool 2-0 across the two-legged semi-final, and now have a massive opportunity to win their first major silverware since the 1976 FA Cup.

Demand for seats is expected to be huge as the club goes to their first major final since the 2003 FA Cup.

The amount of tickets on offer does not match that of the attendances Saints regularly get at St Mary’s.

Ahead of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, supporters groups claimed that Saints should have received more tickets for Wembley.

Saints had sold-out their allocation, while Carlisle were given 24,000 tickets, but didn’t sell them all.

It led to calls for Saints to be given the chance to fill the empty seats, but the Football League said they would not be sold for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, Saints’ Premier League match against Arsenal at St Mary’s on the day before the League Cup final on Saturday February 25 will be rearranged, with a new date yet to be scheduled.

Ticket information for the League Cup final (concessions are defined as over-65s and under-18s only): Category One – Adults £100, Concessions £50 Category Two – Adults £90, Concessions £45 Category Three – Adults £72, Concessions £36 Category Four – Adults £56, Concessions £28 Category Five – Adults £40, Concessions £20

Southampton confirm talks with Chinese investors Lander

Show/hide article…

Southampton could become the next Premier League team to receive Chinese investment, should construction company Lander Sports Development succeed in buying a stake in the club.

Lander, whose interest in Southampton was rumoured last year, told the Shenzhen stock exchange in a statement that it had struck a deal with Saints’ owner Katharina Liebherr to buy into the soccer club’s holding company, without disclosing any terms.

Southampton, who on Wednesday beat Liverpool to reach the final of England’s League Cup, released a statement via club owner Katharina Liebherr.

“Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club,” she said.

"A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

“The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey. Together we have had many years of progression and success, and ensuring this continues is the main focus of any possible partnership.”

The club, 11th in the Premier League, join Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and second tier Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in having Chinese investors.

Chinese entities and individuals have ploughed more than $3 billion into overseas soccer investments over the past year or so, encouraged by avid fan President Xi Jinping who wants the country to become a soccer superpower.

The club was rescued from the brink of bankruptcy by German-born Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr in 2009. Katharina inherited the south coast club after her father’s death in 2010 and became non-executive chairman in 2014.

Shares in Lander, which builds stadiums and organises sporting competitions, have been suspended since Oct. 14 when speculation surfaced of potential interest in Southampton.

UPDATE AND PHOTOS: Post boxes painted red and white after Saints reach Wembley final

Show/hide article…

Two post boxes have been painted in Saints colours after they reached their first major final in 14 years last night.

Shane Long’s stoppage-time strike saw the Saints march past Liverpool to book their place at Wembley in next month’s EFL Cup final, with two Royal Mail post boxes having white stripes painted down them in celebration.

With one on Queensway and another by the Bargate in the centre, it has divided opinion on whether it’s a form of celebration, or vandalism.

PHOTOS: Saints heading to Wembley after Liverpool win - all the pictures >>>

Graham Paul, 26, a barman from the city centre said: “It’s beautiful to me. I think two is probably enough, but they’re celebrating the achievement and that’s what counts. It’s not every day you reach a major final.”

Jeffrey Vigar, 75, retired from Bevois Valley said: “It is vandalism. Yes I’m proud of the team but it’s the taxpayers who have to pay for this to be cleaned up now.”

However, Royal Mail have confirmed they will be removing the stripes from the post boxes.

A spokesman said: “We congratulate Southampton FC on their success however will be returning the post boxes to their original colour as soon as it is reasonably possible."

After beating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield to secure a 2-0 aggregate win, the Saints will play the winners of Hull and Manchester United in the other semi-final at Wembley on February 26.
