Claude Puel hails Jack Stephens’ impact in semi-final at Anfield

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel hailed the impact made by Jack Stephens during Southampton’s League Cup semi-final second leg victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

Puel was left with no option but to select Stephens, 23 on Friday, after Virgil Van Dijk was ruled out through injury.

Puel had sold Jose Fonte, another centre back, last week to West Ham United and it meant that Stephens, who is yet to start a Premier League game, was called up to play alongside Maya Yoshida.

It was put to Puel that Stephens, who joined Southampton from Plymouth Argyle nearly six years ago, had performed like a veteran having dismissed any threat posed by Daniel Sturridge.

“It was an exciting game for him to play but it was potentially difficult for him too,” Puel reflected. “He was calm and mature. I saw him play for the under-23 team and it made me realise picking him would be a normal selection. I am very pleased for all of the people in the academy who have worked very hard with him.”

Over the two legs, Southampton’s aggregate victory should probably have been greater than it was. Substitute Shane Long’s injury time winner means Southampton travel to Wembley next month, where they will probably face Manchester United, having knocked both Arsenal and Liverpool out of the competition without conceding a goal in five games.

“We’ve had a tough season with a game every few days,” Puel added. “Today it’s fantastic to win and have this feeling for the staff, the players and our fans. But it’s not finished. We are not going to Wembley to participate. We go to win this game.”

For Liverpool, it represented their second defeat at home in five days against an opponent that packed defenders behind the ball.

Since beating Manchester City on New Years’ Eve, results at Anfield have been terrible: drawing with League Two Plymouth Argyle, a defeat to Swansea City - bottom in the Premier League - and now this. Their only victory in 2016 across seven matches, in fact, has been in the FA Cup replay at Plymouth.

Klopp’s point that Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty following an infringement by the eventual match-winner Long, was more of an observation than a complaint. “The handball was clear,” he said. “Long: clear handball. I don’t look for excuses but it’s hard to accept it week by week.”

Klopp was asked whether his players would suffer from a hangover. “No, absolutely not,” he responded. “If we doubt the way we are after these little problems we have now, it would be a strange thing. We don’t have the points we want, we don’t have the results we want, but we know what we want to do.”

He was frustrated mostly by the strength of the wind inside Anfield. Since the building of the new main stand, the pitch has become more exposed to the elements. “When I first came here, everybody laughed when I mentioned it,” he said. “It was really difficult for all of the players tonight.”

For Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho was subdued. He started the day by signing a new contract with the club which ends in 2022.

“The base is really good here and Phil is the first to show that he thinks the same,” Klopp added.

Van Dijk to see another specialist over injury

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk will see a specialist in the coming days as Saints continue to assess his injury.

The club have not ruled him out for three months as some reports have suggested, but initial scans have failed to provide a clear answer as to the extent of the injury the star defender suffered in the win over Leicester.

Van Dijk is now waiting for the swelling and bruising to subside around his left ankle before having further scans and seeing another specialist to get a firm diagnosis.

Saints boss Claude Puel said: “I don’t know for the moment.

“I think it’s important injury. He has to see another specialist in a few days and we will see in the next days.”

Jack Stephens put in a stellar display at Anfield in van Dijk’s place, partnering Maya Yoshida to a clean sheet to help Saints to Wembley in only his fourth start for the club.

“It was a very good game of course for Jack and it was an exciting game to play but difficult because he has not a lot of experience,” reckoned Puel.

“He played this game with good spirit and calm like the maturity of an experienced player.

“When he played with the under-21s it was very interesting and for me it was normal to put him in the team because it’s important for Southampton to continue this work and improve this situation.

“Also for the philosophy of Southampton and for all the trainers in the academy and congratulations.”

Southampton make improved £17.5m offer for Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Southampton have made an improved offer for Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini of £14million plus £3.5m in add-ons.

Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli is expected to negotiate the 25-year-old Italy international’s sale before the weekend.

The Saints have re-opened negotiations for Gabbiadini after initially been put off by the £18million price tag placed on the former Sampdoria striker by the Serie A club.

Napoli are now said to have lowered their valuation and Southampton will be desperate to push through a move in the final week of the window, with striker Charlie Austin out injured until at least April.

Southampton reached the EFL Cup final on Wednesday thanks to Shane Long’s second winning goal in three matches, and the Republic of Ireland striker will hope his return to goals will make the need for Gabbiadini’s arrival less urgent.

Claude Puel is a keen admirer of the striker, who has scored 25 goals since signing for Napoli in January 2015, but only 33 of his 79 appearances have come from the starting line-up.

Gabbiadini has fallen down the pecking order under manager Maurizio Sarri this season, but Southampton may face competition for his services.

West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City, West Ham United and Watford have all previously monitored his situation in Italy.

Puel will acknowledge that progress in the EFL Cup cannot mask the indifferent Premier League form that has seen the side struggle to break into the top 10, with Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester ending a run of four straight defeats.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk to see second specialist

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is to see another specialist in the coming days as Southampton continue to assess the defender’s injury.

The 25-year-old, so impressive for Saints since joining from Celtic in 2015, was forced off after a challenge by Jamie Vardy in Sunday’s win against Leicester.

Van Dijk missed Southampton’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool as a result, yet Claude Puel’s men secured a 1-0 win at Anfield to reach the Wembley final with a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Reports claim the Holland international is facing three months out with the ankle injury, but Saints have yet to confirm the severity of the issue.

‘I don’t know for the moment,’ Puel said when asked about the absence Van Dijk is facing.

‘I think it’s important injury. He has to see another specialist in a few days and we will see in the next days.’

Van Dijk, named Saints’ new team captain following Jose Fonte’s exit, expressed his delight at Saints reaching Wembley on Twitter.

‘Un-believable! What a performance @jackstephens-18 !’ he said after the stand-in defender shone on just his fourth Saints start.

‘So happy for the team, fans and everyone around the club! WE are going to Wembley!!’

Southampton hero Shane Long shows off his prayer tattoo

Show/hide article…

Some might say Southampton, with their backs against the wall at Anfield, needed a little divine inspiration to edge past Liverpool and into the EFL Cup final.

For Shane Long, their goalscorer, that would be pretty much spot on.

The Irish frontman proved to be the hero at Anfield on Wednesday as his stoppage-time strike confirmed the Saints’ progress into their first major final for more than a decade.

After a second half spent almost permanently pinned inside their own half, with Daniel Sturridge missing two golden chances and Fraser Forster producing a superb, scrambled save from Emre Can, the footballing gods appeared to be smiling on the south coast visitors.

And that notion was only further reinforced by Long’s 93rd-minute strike, which sent the travelling Saints fans delirious and frantically planning their trips to Wembley on February 26.

Moments later, at the full-time whistle, Long removed his shirt to reveal a striking tattoo - the first two verses of the ‘Prayer to the Infant Jesus’.

On the left-hand side of his chest, above his heart, the former West Brom forward has nine lines of a prayer his father read to him when he was a child inked into his skin.

The words mean that much to Long that he knows the entire piece off by heart.

Saints fans will be hoping that their striker’s divine inspiration continues when they meet either Manchester United or Hull in the Wembley final on February 26.

United have the upper hand in the tie, leading 2-0 from the first leg, ahead of the return fixture at the KCOM Stadium on Thursday.

Did Shane Long handle the ball during the EFL Cup semi-final win against Liverpool? Jamie Carragher and Matt Le Tissier have their say…

The Sky Sports pundits were in the studio for the second leg match on Wednesday evening, which was won by Southampton as Shane Long’s late strike sealed a 2-0 aggregate victory.

However, in the 84th minute, the ball appeared to strike Long on the shoulder as Southampton tried to clear the ball from their area, but Liverpool’s penalty appeals were dismissed by referee Martin Atkinson.

One man who was sure of the outcome was Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who told Sky Sports after the game: "When we are part of things like a handball, it could be nice to hear a whistle from the referee.

“I don’t know how often it has happened this season and usually we say nothing about it and you think ‘after Man United, it was a clear offside goal and nobody says anything’ and today, a clear handball and no one says anything.”

Stephens: The fans carried us over the line

Show/hide article…

Shane Long’s late strike completed the 2-0 aggregate victory over Liverpool, but Stephens revealed the special impact the away support had on the players prior to kick-off at Anfield.

“Everyone played their part and put a shift in tonight,” he started.

“When we ran out from the tunnel at the start of the game we could hear the Saints fans straight away. That’s was a big help. They’ve carried us over the line, really.

“It was a real battle for us, especially in the second half. But we created chances and could have scored a couple ourselves, so we more than deserved to go through.”

Claude Puel gifted Stephens a starting berth in the heart of defence for the second leg tie, in place of the injured Virgil van Dijk.

And the 22-year-old put in a fine resolute display alongside fellow central defender Maya Yoshida.

“I loved every minute of it,” continued Stephens.

“Nights like tonight are why you want to play football and why you work so hard to get to this point.

“I’ve been here all season working hard and waiting for my chance. I’ve had to be patient but I feel like I’ve taken each game as it has come when I’ve got the opportunity.”

Matt Le Tissier hails ‘incredible’ Southampton after EFL Cup semi-final heroics at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier hailed Southampton’s defensive display as his former side reached the EFL Cup final for the first time in 38 years.

Shane Long’s stoppage-time strike sealed a 1-0 win at Anfield, and a 2-0 aggregate victory, but the result was built on the defensive solidity provided by centre-back pairing Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida.

So impressive was their display, the absence of injured captain Virgil van Dijk went unnoticed as Saints became the first club in the competition’s history to reach the final without conceding a goal.

And, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Le Tissier saluted his former club’s gallant display. “It is incredible, it really is,” he said.

"Liverpool have been in many, many finals over the years - Jamie Carragher mentioned it probably meant more to Southampton and you could see that in the players’ efforts.

"They gave everything they had and there were some proper out there defensively.

"We created a lot of chances over the two legs, and we missed a few, but when you go through the whole tournament without conceding a goal, you’ve got to do that with some good defenders in your side.

“We did it without arguably our player of the season so far in Virgil van Dijk. He’s barely been mentioned tonight because of the fantastic job that Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida did in the centre-back positions.”

Claude Puel’s side have the chance to emulate Southampton’s FA Cup winning side of 1976 when they take on either Manchester United or Hull City at Wembley on February 26.

Despite coming in domestic competition, Jamie Carragher likened the Saints’ impressive display to a vintage European away win, where their organisational prowess suffocated a tame Liverpool attack.

“For a few years Southampton have been a tough nut to crack,” he added. "Under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman they were always very tough defensively.

"Yes, Liverpool missed a couple of chances but there was never that feeling that Southampton were under that much pressure. That was down to the job the midfielders did, the likes of Oriol Romeu.

"Young Stephens was never put under pressure because Liverpool couldn’t get at him due to Southampton’s organisation.

“It was a like a brilliant European away performance from Southampton, they soaked up pressure and hit them on the counter. Southampton looked far more dangerous than Liverpool did all night.”

Forster delighted after his wonder save takes Southampton through

Show/hide article…

Fraser Forster thanked ‘the gods of football’ after his wonder save propelled Southampton to their first major final in 14 years.

Claude Puel’s side will take on Manchester United or Hull City in the EFL Cup final on February 27 after Shane Long’s dramatic late goal secured a 1-0 win at Anfield and enabled them to beat Liverpool 2-0 on aggregate.

It was nothing more than Southampton deserved for their efforts over two legs but the crucial moment came in the 53rd minute here when Forster allowed a shot from Emre Can to squirm from his grasp but he showed incredible athleticism to spin and paw the ball off the line.

Forster said: 'I thought I did enough to get there but the footballing gods were with me. It was just that little bit of luck we needed. We’ve been missing that this season. Thankfully it didn’t go in but we’ll take that and see what happens in the final.

‘I thought we created a lot of chances and limited them. But a great performance again, it’s always a hard place to come but job done and we’ll look forward to the final now.’

Southampton executed their game plan to perfection, threatening to pick off Liverpool on the counterattack and eventually doing so when substitute Josh Sims charged the length of the pitch in added time to tee up Long, who made no mistake.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing for Puel this season but the Frenchman was thrilled with this achievement, saying: 'Fraser does the job very well but the players around him helped with the clean sheet.

‘Two games with a clean sheet is a strong performance against this Liverpool team. They didn’t have a lot of chance. It’s not bad? Fantastic, fantastic. The squad have worked very hard since the beginning of the season. They have done fantastic work.’

Puel expects to know more in the coming days on the extent of the injury Virgil Van Dijk has suffered but his replacement, Jack Stephens, excelled. The England Under 21 defender never lost his poise and made superb tackle on Divock Origi later in the game.

‘He had a very good game,’ said Puel. ‘He played with a good spirit, calm, with maturity. When he played with the Under-21s he was very interesting. It was normal to put him in the team.’

Jurgen Klopp was magnanimous in defeat and offered his unreserved congratulations to Southampton but he felt Liverpool were denied a penalty when a shot from Can struck Long on the shoulder. He feels refereeing decisions are costing Liverpool dearly.

‘We are out. We have to accept it,’ said Klopp. 'I’m disappointed because I thought we deserved to win the game. I have to congratulate them.

'The handball was clear. Look, maybe it’s not interesting but it is really hard to accept week by week by week. Man United scored a goal that was two or three yards offside. Is my job to get a fine (by speaking about referees)?

‘The handball was obvious. 100 per cent obvious. The show must go on and we have the next game. We have had a lot of goals against us that should not have been allowed.’

It’s amazing, says Long

Show/hide article…

Long struck the killer blow in stoppage time when he dispatched Josh Sims’ incisive pass well beyond the reach of Loris Karius to make it 2-0 on aggregate.

Trying to sum that particular emotion, Long said: “It was amazing. Getting a winner in the last minute and knowing that’s enough to put us through with a few more minutes to hold on.

“It’s an amazing feeling in front of your own fans and there’s a lot of hard work that goes into that.

“It was a bit of relief but we were just ecstatic at the end.”

A sensational run saw Saints keep a clean sheet in every single round against Premier League opposition.

And after disappointments at times in the current campaign, Long insists the Southampton fans have got what they deserve with a trip to Wembley.

“To beat Arsenal and Liverpool along the way, we’ve done it the hard way. We had no easy games coming through,” said Long.

“It’s a massive thing for a club like Southampton to get to a final. It’s been disappointing in the league and in Europe so to give the fans something they deserve, is a day out at Wembley and hopefully a medal at the end of it.”

Klopp slams referee Atkinson after EFL Cup defeat

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was unhappy with referee Mike Atkinson but insisted he was not looking for excuses after the EFL Cup semi-final exit to Southampton.

Klopp felt his side should have had a penalty for handball by Shane Long well before the Saints substitute went on to score the added-time goal which gave the visitors a 2-0 aggregate victory to put them into their first major final since 2003.

‘Congratulations to Southampton but I am disappointed,’ he said.

'The handball was clear. Long’s was a clear handball.

'The handball was obvious, 100 per cent obvious. No one comes down and says, ‘Sorry, I didn’t see it’.

'Maybe it’s not interesting and I won’t look for excuses but it is really hard to accept.

'In one of the biggest games against Man United (a fortnight ago) he (Antonio Valencia) was two or three yards offside (for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s equaliser) and no one really speaks about it.

‘We’ve had a lot of offside goals against us which shouldn’t have been allowed and then a handball.’

However, despite their bid to reach Wembley for the second successive season falling at the final hurdle the Reds boss said he was more than satisfied with the performance.

‘Southampton counter-attacked really well and in the second half they did it much better,’ he added.

'We usually score in situations like this but we didn’t.

'It doesn’t say anything about the performance but everything about the result. We are out and we have to accept it.

'As a coach it is very important for me to know what the performance is like and I thought we deserved to win the game.

'For me it is very important the way we choose to create chances.

'We stuck to the usual plan and in one or two moments immediately we had good chances.

‘We are out and I think no one will talk about this for a long time but for us the performance was really important and I am fine with this.’

Southampton manager Claude Puel came with a game plan and his players executed it perfectly with a well-organised, composed display.

The Frenchman felt a trip to Wembley was just reward for a difficult season which has seen them go out of the Europa League early and have some inconsistent performances in the Premier League.

‘I am happy for all the squad because they work very hard since the beginning of the season and play all these games every three days which is very difficult,’ he said.

'Often they can do fantastic work on the pitch without the good reward and today I think it’s fantastic to win this game, to see them qualify for Wembley and to have all this for the staff, the players and our fans.

'It’s not finished now. It’s interesting of course to go to Wembley and it’s not just to participate but to win this game.

'It’s an important game, not just to play this final but perhaps to see another qualification for the European games.

'It will be important for the squad to continue the work, to improve, and know the possibilities to play European games.

‘It’s important to put all this experience for next year in European games. It will be important to qualify.’

Puel: We are going to Wembley to win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted that Saints will not be heading to Wembley to make up the numbers and has set his sights on a first piece of major silverware for the club in 41 years.

Puel has led his side to the League Cup final in his first season in charge to book a first major final in 14 years for Saints.

A 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, which gave a 2-0 aggregate win, sealed a remarkable charge to Wembley that has seen Saints defeat four Premier League sides on the way, without conceding a goal in their five matches.

Saints will learn their opponents for the February 26 encounter tomorrow night, with Manchester United heavy favourites to get past Hull.

But Puel is adamant Saints will not be going just to enjoy the occasion, but instead are intent on winning.

“When we play against this great teams, these great players, it is important to think not just about their quality but it is important to stay focussed about our play always,” said Puel.

“When we prepared this game, the second leg, it was not the result the most important but the possibility after the recovery to have good football and possibilities to put problems for this team.

“I think in the two games it was this. It was fantastic first leg at home and we deserve more goals I think.

“Just with one goal up to play the second leg was difficult but the first half after every recovery we had the qualities to get opportunities and chances. This was important.

“Second half was difficult but now we will play against Manchester United but it’s not Manchester United of course, it’s to play a great team to play our play always.

“We will see with players at that level because today we have many problems to prepare this game with the injury of van Dijk, Boufal not qualified because of the Morocco selection prevents him to play until the end of the competition. It’s not normal.

“We have many problems but it was fantastic from the squad.”

Saints had a disappointing exit from the Europa League at the group stages, and Puel thinks this helps in some way to make up for it.

“Yes. It’s an important big game, not just to play this final but perhaps to see another qualify for the European games,” he reckoned.

“It will be important for the squad to continue the work, to improve, and know the possibilities to play European games.

“All the information when they improve it’s important to put all this experience for next year in European games. It will be important to qualify.”

Claude Puel: Southampton boss wants EFL Cup path to Europa League

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel has stressed the importance of securing European football next season after his side reached the EFL Cup final.

Saints won at Liverpool and will face Manchester United or Hull, with the winners entering the Europa League.

Puel faced criticism when his side drew with Hapoel Be’er Sheva to exit the Europa League group stage this season.

Puel said: “It’s important to put this experience for next year in European games. It’ll be important to qualify.”

“It will be important for the squad to continue the work, to improve, and know the possibilities to play European games,” the 55-year-old added.

Ahead of kick-off, the Southampton manager faced questions on his style of play, with some supporters deeming his tactics negative.

Southampton had just 27% possession at Anfield but added to their first-leg lead in injury time when Shane Long struck to earn a 2-0 aggregate win and seal a place in the final on 26 February.

The result means former Lyon boss Puel has not lost in all six of his meetings with Liverpool and he has guided the south-coast club to a first major final since 2003 in his first season at St Mary’s.

“Now we go to Wembley, not just to participate but to win this cup,” he added.

Liverpool’s main threat over two legs arrived as they chased the tie in the second half of the second leg, but wasted chances by Daniel Sturridge and a fine save from Saints’ keeper Fraser Forster saw Klopp taste defeat in a cup semi-final for the first time.

Forster smartly hooked a ball off the line after spilling an Emre Can shot and Klopp was frustrated his side were not given a penalty when Long handled in the area.

“They won both games, they deserved it,” said Klopp.

"We had big, big chances and no luck. A lucky save, a good save but a lucky save by Forster. The referee again didn’t see the handball by Shane Long and that doesn’t help in a game like this.

“I’m happy with the performance, I’m fine with a lot of things but of course it’s a cup so no-one cares how you play, you have to win and get to the final.”

Klopp, 49, guided Liverpool to the League Cup final last season but his side are now on a worrying run of form, with just one win in seven matches.

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Mark Lawrenson: “Absolutely, totally and utterly deserved. They always, always carried that goal threat. They played with so much pace, so much directness. Over the two legs they have totally outplayed Liverpool. They thoroughly deserve the Wembley appearance.”
