The Potters currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, but could end the campaign three places higher should they win on Sunday.

“It just shows the fine margins of the season that they are just four points ahead of us, but sit in eighth position,” Hughes explained.

“It’s been a very tight and congested season for a lot of us, and to be perfectly honest I don’t feel there is a great difference between the majority of us.

“Southampton have good players, just as we do, so hopefully it will be an entertaining game, but one that we can come out of with maximum spoils.”

It’s been a frustrating season for the Potters, as they are set to finish in the bottom half for the first time since 2012/13.

And whilst the year has not gone to plan, Hughes is keen to ensure his men finish on a positive note.

“Unfortunately, we’re not going to hit our pre-season targets now, but there is still the chance to move up the table two or three spots,” he continued.

“Obviously, we would like to do that, but we know we are going to have to win our game if we are to have any chance of doing that.

“It’s been a frustrating season for us, but there is one final opportunity to get points on the board, and if we can do that then it will undoubtedly give us a better summer.”

WATCH: Premier League final day preview: Top goals and stats

Show/hide article…

Gear up for the big Premier League finale with our video preview featuring some top goals and stats.

Chelsea have clinched the title and the relegated sides have been confirmed but there’s still plenty to play for as the curtain comes down on the 2016/17 season with all 10 games kicking off at 3pm on Sunday.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal are involved in a three-way fight for two Champions League places but while the Reds have their destiny in their own hands, four consecutive wins suggests Arsene Wenger’s side will not give up the chase until the final whistle.

Chelsea’s fifth title in 12 years was confirmed by a 1-0 win at West Brom last weekend but a final-day victory over Sunderland would be their 30th of the campaign - a Premier League best in a 38-game campaign.

Tottenham might have finished runners-up but Harry Kane’s four-goal salvo in a 6-1 thrashing of Leicester on Thursday has put the England striker in pole position to win the Golden Boot for the second successive season. Kane goes into Spurs’ final game at Hull with 26 league goals to his name - two ahead of Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and three more than Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Elsewhere, there’s not just pride to play for but valuable prize money, too. Who’ll end the campaign on a high note? Hit the video above to get in the mood.

Follow the Premier League finale live on Sky Sports, with Liverpool v Middlesbrough on Sky Sports 1 HD and Watford v Manchester City on Sky Sports 2 HD. See goals as they go in on mobile and keep track of all the action on Soccer Special with Jeff Stelling.

Davis: Let’s finish with a flourish

Show/hide article…

Saints go into the game knowing all three points would secure a top eight finish in the Premier League.

And after being frustrated against Manchester United in midweek, the captain is keen to go away for the summer with momentum.

“It’s always nice to have a home game to finish and you want to go off on your break on a high. It’s an opportunity for us to do that,” Davis said.

“There were a lot of positives to take from the other night (against Manchester United). We were frustrated we couldn’t take three points but we go again against Stoke.

Claude Puel’s side have struggled for home goals of late, but with an array of attacking talent at their disposal, Davis feels there have been positive signs.

“We created chances against United but couldn’t take that. If we keep the same attitude and keep making chances then ultimately one is going to go into the back of the net,” he reflected.

“Hopefully we can do that this weekend and send the fans home happy.”

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

After their 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday, Claude Puel’s men know victory would secure a place in the top eight of the Premier League.

Saints will be hoping to find their clinical edge again on the final day of the season, against a Stoke City side who are unbeaten in their last five final day encounters (W3 D2), including wins in each of the last three.

Mark Hughes’ men will also be looking to end strongly after a frustrating campaign that will see them finish in the bottom half for the first time since 2012/13.

Southampton: Claude Puel has hinted that Charlie Austin could feature from the start against Stoke. That aside, Shane Long will be sidelined with a broken metatarsal, while Cédric and Ryan Bertrand are doubts.

Stoke City: Mark Hughes will make a late decision on the fitness of Marko Arnautovic after he suffered an elbow injury following a heavy challenge with Arsneal’s Rob Holding. Peter Crouch and Saido Berahino are also pushing for starts.

Puel: Go out and enjoy it

Show/hide article…

Saints bring down the curtain on their 2017/18 campaign at home to Stoke City on Sunday, and a win would seal a fourth consecutive year in which they have finished in the top eight of the division.

Puel said: "I think it is important to play for something in this last game.

"It is an opportunity to finish the season strongly at home, in front of our fans – it’s fantastic.

"The season has been so long and perhaps it was difficult after the [EFL Cup] final to come back in the Premier league, but, with a good spirit and good attitude and strong work in the training sessions for the players, we can continue this work.

“The possibility to finish higher up the table is very important for us and it’s a good opportunity to enjoy this game, because to finish with a strong game is a good thing for the squad."

Of what he is hoping to see from his team, the Saints manager added: "I think it’s important to play and to have a lot of opportunities to score, and I think with confidence, with quality, and with a good attitude, we can finish strongly and we can enjoy our game for us and for our fans.

“We know it is important for the people and it will be a good thing.”
