Southampton forward Sam Gallagher to join Birmingham on loan

Show/hide article…

Southampton forward Sam Gallagher has agreed to join Birmingham on a season-long loan, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands Gallagher will undergo a medical later on Monday before signing terms on the deal.

Gallagher, who signed a new four-year deal in August, was also wanted by Aston Villa and Derby.

He becomes manager Harry Redknapp’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window and third acquisition of the day following the arrivals of Carl Jenkinson and Cohen Bramall at St Andrew’s.

The 21-year-old scored 12 goals in 47 appearances last season while on loan at Blackburn.

Gallagher represented Scotland at U19 level before switching his allegiances to England and he has since featured for the Three Lions at U19 and U20 level.

Brilliant story of young Southampton fan’s amazing matchday goes viral

Show/hide article…

It’s easy to be cynical about modern day football.

With players going on strike to force through multi-million deals, Premier League players living in superstar bubbles and Twitter trolling seemingly the new favourite pastime of the average supporter, you will often hear fans decrying the state of today’s game.

That is precisely why you need to read about William Hartley’s day at Southampton vs West Ham - because it will instantly remind you about how amazing football can be when you’re a nine year-old boy.

Saints-mad William was at St Mary’s as usual with his mum Josephine - the two of them have had season tickets for the last three years. While he was happy to see his team beat the Hammers 3-2, Southampton’s victory wasn’t the best part of William’s day.

In fact, William’s day was so great, Josephine posted a series of tweets describing it in detail - and the tale quickly went viral, getting retweeted thousands of times.

William’s ‘best day of my life’ started out pretty well. Not only did he manage to meet most of the Saints’ first team, he also got himself a new shirt with the name of Sofiane Boufal - his favourite player - on the back.

The game itself would have been mighty enjoyable, seeing Charlie Austin secure a 3-2 win for Southampton with a late penalty.

But it was only after the match that things got really, incredibly amazing for William - as his mum describes here:

So, in short, nine year-old William’s day at St Mary’s saw him:

If you can read this story without feeling warm, fuzzy and reinvigorated in your love of football, may we suggest you start watching another sport?

Josephine is running the Southampton half marathon to raise money for the Saints Foundation. You can donate at her Just Giving page.

Ref Watch: Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen should have been sent off against Chelsea, says Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Ref Watch: Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen should have been sent off against Chelsea, says Dermot Gallagher

Ref Watch is here to debate a number of the weekend’s controversial talking points from the second round of Premier League fixtures.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News studio to give his view on several incidents from the last two days’ action.

Red cards given and not given, unsportsmanlike behaviour and offside decisions all feature in this week’s edition…

INCIDENT: Jan Vertonghen is booked after a late tackle on Victor Moses

SCENARIO: The Spurs defender wildly launches into a high challenge on the Blues wing-back

DERMOT SAYS: This is a red card, he is high and late, there is no chance of getting the ball - he is nowhere near the ball - and he knows he is going to get the man. So I think that is a red card.

SCENARIO: Man Utd’s France midfielder, already on a yellow, dives in on the left-back

DERMOT SAYS: He is on a yellow and we have this misnomer with people where the next foul the player is going to get sent off. I do not think that is true because you have to remember that every foul is not a yellow card. And this one is clumsy and careless, but it is not reckless. If that had been five minutes into the game and he had not been on a yellow card, then the referee just speaks to him and everybody would accept it. The reason peoples’ barometers change is because he is already on a yellow card. And if you are going to give people a yellow card for his first tackle, we really are going to have a very poor game.

INCIDENT: Mark Noble tries to play mind games with Charlie Austin before his late penalty at St Mary’s

SCENARIO: The West Ham midfielder escapes a booking after trying to put the Saints striker off by telling him Joe Hart knows which way he is going to shoot

DERMOT’S VERDICT: Noble could have been booked for delaying the taking of the penalty

DERMOT SAYS: You (the referee) want to get the penalty taken as quickly and cleanly as possible because the longer the delay, the more pressure on the forward. Joe Hart has obviously come to delay the taking of the kick and Mark Noble has come to say he knows where he is going kick it to try and psyche him out and the longer and longer you delay, the more pressure you are going to put on the kicker.

INCIDENT: Alexandre Lacazette has a second-half ‘goal’ ruled out for offside

SCENARIO: The Arsenal striker is deemed to have just strayed ahead of the last Stoke defender at the Bet365

DERMOT SAYS: The TV pictures prove it is the right call and much as we like to say to people, ‘he could have let that go’, you cannot criticise the assistant and let’s give him praise for being right. So let’s not beat him up for that.

INCIDENT: Sergio Ramos is sent off after picking up two yellows against Depor

SCENARIO: The Real skipper appears to catch Borja Valle with a leading arm, getting cautioned for the incident

DERMOT SAYS: I would not have sent him off. I think that is really, really tough - when a player is jumping like that, he is looking to head the ball. If that happened in the Premier League, that would be a major surprise.

Liverpool ready to pounce for Virgil van Dijk: Reds will move if Southampton change stance

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk is wanted by the Reds but their pursuit landed them in hot water earlier this summer.

Liverpool were forced into an embarrassing public apology after Saints accused them of tapping up the player.

The trail has since gone cold, with Southampton insisting the Dutch defender is going nowhere despite Chelsea joining the Kop club in the race to get him.

But the Liverpool Echo say Liverpool are ready and waiting for any change of plan from the south coast club.

Liverpool’s transfer plans revealed if Van Dijk move fails

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are not planning on signing a replacement if they fail to land Virgil van Dijk this summer.

The Reds have been chasing the Southampton defender all summer, but have so far been thwarted in their attempts to capture the Dutchman, reports the Liverpool Echo.

However, Jurgen Klopp is ready to pounce if the Saints’ signing of £17million Lazio centre-back Wesley Hoedt moves the goalposts.

Lazio sporting director Ighli Tare claims that Hoedt has been guaranteed regular first-team football by Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger was adamant last week that Van Dijk wouldn’t be sold, but Southampton’s new Chinese owners haven’t provided Pellegrino with any additional funds for transfers.

Uncertainty about his future remains as Van Dijk still hasn’t returned to Saints’ first-team fold - a month after being banished to train on his own after informing Pellegrino that he wanted to leave.

Liverpool know they have to tread carefully having publicly withdrawn their interest and issued an apology to Saints in June after being accused of tapping up Van Dijk, who handed in a transfer request a fortnight ago.

Southampton’s position over Van Dijk to date has mirrored Liverpool’s approach to keeping Philippe Coutinho away from the clutches of Barcelona. They have been unwilling to put a price on him or listen to offers.

However, if Saints do reluctantly grant the 26-year-old his wish to move on then Liverpool will be at the front of the queue and are prepared to shatter their transfer record.

If the Reds don’t land Van Dijk then Klopp will press ahead with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez as his four centre-back options for this season.

Jaïdi: We must maintain our level

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters saw off Reading 4-0 in the first game of the Premier League 2 season, and Jaïdi believes the challenge now is to maintain that standard.

“Straight after the game I reminded the boys it was just the first game of the season,” he started.

“Obviously we set our standard now and have shown the opposition what we have got. Now it is our challenge to maintain that level.

“But we have been back in training, working hard and focussing on the next game and the next challenge.

"All of the boys are aware of it and hopefully we will continue against Wolves with the same performance and mentality to get all three points.”

Premier League icon suffers biking accident on Portugal holiday

Show/hide article…

It is common for ex-footballers to still seek the adrenaline rush once they have hung up their boots and retired from the game.

For the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer, his activity of choice is biking on the continent.

But with that comes its own dangers. And the former Newcastle United hitman displayed just what can happen if you fall off your bike.

The Magpies legend posted a photo of his bloodied hand as a result of the incident, which he suffered while holidaying in Quinta do Lago, Portugal.

‘Ouch! Bit of a fall off the bike this morning! Wating for results of X-rays,’ he wrote on Instagram.

Shearer holds the record as the Premier League’s top goalscorer, netting 260 goals during spells at Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle.

Liverpool fans furious with Klopp’s alternative to signing Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

There are just 10 days left of the transfer window and Liverpool fans are getting anxious.

Reds supporters are keen for their side to sign a new centre-back, and Southampton’s wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk is the club’s number one target.

The Dutch international is very keen on a move, after he handed in a transfer request this summer, but the Saints are refusing to let their man go without a fight, much to the annoyance of Liverpool fans.

And to make things worse, Klopp will not be looking for an alternative to the £60million-rated defender, should the Reds fail in bringing him to Anfield, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Meanwhile Southampton are set to bolster their own defence, and are keeping tabs on Lazio centre-back Wesley Hoedt, which could help pave the way for a van Dijk exit.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has guaranteed Hoedt regular first-team football, according to Lazio sporting director Ighli Tare.

Reds fans will be hoping Southampton can get this particular bit of business over the line, as it would strengthen their chances of signing van Dijk.

So far this season Liverpool have proved they a lot to offer when it comes to attacking football, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and new signing Mohamed Salah all grabbed goals on the opening day.

But they have looked distinctly average in defence, and conceded three times in the same match against Watford, throwing away two points.

Reds supporters have been calling on the club to sign defensive reinforcements all summer, and want to see other big names linked alongside first choice van Dijk.

But it seems Klopp, who has previously praised his strength in defence, will not move for an alternative to the Dutchman, should he fail to sign him.

And well, it’s safe to say Liverpool supporters aren’t particularly pleased…
