Jaïdi: Our league objectives are clear

Show/hide article…

Saints are tied on points with Monday night’s opposition Fulham, with both sides having won four, but Jaïdi is keen to improve on the U23s current league position of sixth.

Reflecting on the disappointment of their recent Checkatrade Trophy exit, the Tunisian said: "As coaches we try to keep the players on the right level, to react positively and have spirit.

"The Northampton game was difficult to digest as a coach and a player. Winning 3-0 and then losing the game is a learning curve, we’ve broken down the main talking points and prepared some technical aspects to ensure that situation never repeats itself.

“The last two games were cup games, but our objectives in the league are clear as a team and in terms of developing our players. The focus will be the same, but the aims slightly differ. We’re focussing on the league now.”

Having analysed the London outfit ahead of the tie, and reflecting on the offering from his Saints youngsters midway through the season, Jaïdi added: "Fulham look like they play the same way as us, I’m expecting a fairly even game in terms of technical and tactical aspects. But hoping to have the advantage in terms of goals and points.

“I think we have been inconsistent at times, some great performances, but also some poor ones. We’re trying to reduce the amount of poor performances and mistakes, and plan to get stronger and stronger. That’s what I expect at this level.”

Winchester City land plum Saints draw

Show/hide article…

WINCHESTER City have landed the plum fixture in the quarter-finals of the Southampton Senior Cup.

The Evo-Stik South West club have been drawn at home to Saints, who are competing in the tournament this season to help celebrate the competition’s centenary.

So far, a youthful Saints XI have only been drawn at home - hammering BTC Southampton 6-0 and QK Southampton 12-0 at Staplewood.

The Winchester tie, likely to take place in early January, has been welcomed with open arms by the cathedral city club who have been fielding a largely young side in the competition - and will continue to do so against Saints under-23s.

“It’s a perfect draw for us with the way we’ve been playing with a young team in the competition,” said Davis.

"Obviously we don’t want to get murdered by Saints, so we will have some first-team squad members involved but, other than that, we’ll be playing the young team that turn out for the reserves and travel everywhere.

“It’s a thankless task sometimes, even for the reserve team management. They deserve their place in the sun.”

Hampshire Premier League second tier club Netley Central Sports won through to the last eight at the weekend.

They produced a surprise 2-0 home win over HPL top flight outfit Infinity, with both goals coming from Matt Watts.

Netley will now host Sydenhams Wessex Premier outfit Lymington Town - three tiers above them in the pyramid - for a place in the semi-finals.

The three remaining Southampton Senior Cup third round ties are due to take place tonight.

Barnes: Goals breed confidence

Show/hide article…

The 20-year-old’s hat-trick took his personal tally to four for the season, and Barnes is keen to take that form forward into league action.

The Under-23s also have the chance to leapfrog opponents Fulham if victorious tonight, with the striker identifying consistency as key to Saints’ push for the top end of the table.

“It is always good to be among the goals,” Barnes began. "No matter the opposition, goals build confidence for the next game.

"It was a bit frustrating as I didn’t get any chances in the first period. But you keep grinding and working hard and I took my three opportunities in the second half.

"For us it is about having consistency of winning games and getting a run going. It has been patchy, in terms of results, so I think we need a couple of wins on the spin and we’ll soon move up the table.

“Fulham are a passing side, they play football the same way we do. They won’t be launching the ball in behind. We’re both in similar areas of the table, where we need to pick up points so it’ll be a tough game.”

Redmond appreciates Saints support

Show/hide article…

The winger offered an honest assessment of a performance he conceded was below par as Saints were beaten 3-0 at Liverpool on Saturday.

Redmond shared some memorable highs with the supporters in his debut season at St Mary’s last term, but says now is the time the players need that backing more than ever.

“We appreciate the support wherever we go one hundred per cent – home or away,” he said.

“They just have to stick with us, through the tough times and the good times.

“Obviously we had good times last season with getting to the cup final, which wasn’t too long ago, but through the bad times is when we need it the most.”

Redmond sees next Sunday’s home game with Everton as an opportunity to get back on track after back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

“We’ve got the quality but we’ve got to believe in ourselves a bit more and get the confidence up,” he added.

“It starts in training and the work we’ll be doing there. We’ve got the chance to put things right next week at home against Everton.”

Cédric: We need to be upset

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten 3-0 at Anfield, with the result seeing them slip to 14th in the Premier League.

Cédric spoke to reporters after the match and explained what sort of a response is required.

“We need to be upset. If you are not upset then something is wrong,” he told the Daily Echo after the loss at Liverpool. “We need to think about our mistakes and what we need to improve.

“It’s normal to be upset and upset doesn’t mean you go out there and let your head go down. It means we go out there and you want to show even more and you want to climb out of the hole and come back to winning ways.

“Every team has difficult moments during a season and it’s in these moments you need to come together and fight for it.”

Cédric wants that fight to be seen when Southampton host Everton, at St Mary’s, on Sunday.

“You cannot blame one or two people, you need to blame all the team and we need to assume our responsibility and go out there and fight as one as a team,” he said. “That’s what we’re going to try and do immediately in the next game.

“You cannot start to doubt everything you do just because you had a bad result.

“Either you can put your head down and just go on the pitch and play, or you get together and you fight.

“We need to definitely go out there and fight with all our weapons. It’s a question of attitude, we need to demand the best from our players and not 60 or 70 per cent because in the Premier League it’s not enough.”

Mohamed Salah’s Southampton goals confirm he has exceeded expectation

Show/hide article…

Too often this season, Liverpool have been frustrated by teams who neutralise their counter-attacking ability by dropping deep and filling the space. And for that, they have Mohamed Salah, who has surpassed all expectations thanks to astonishing finishes like his first effort Saturday at Anfield.

Ref Watch: Mike Dean was wrong to award a foul on Alexis Sanchez, says Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Ref Watch is here to debate a number of the weekend’s controversial talking points from the second round of Premier League fixtures.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News studio to give his view on several incidents from the last two days’ action.

INCIDENT: Shkodran Mustafi’s opening goal came after referee Mike Dean had awarded a dubious free-kick for a foul on Alexis Sanchez by Davinson Sanchez.

DERMOT SAYS: I don’t think it’s a foul, but what’s interesting is that Mike Dean thinks he’s pulled him back. He sees his arm come across and he gives it for that. It’s not the best of decisions.

INCIDENT: Was Mustafi offside for the goal?

DERMOT SAYS: The VAR [Video Assistant Referee] would say it’s offside, but it’s a decision that everyone would accept. It’s so tight. Different teams have been the victim of these types of calls and some have been successful - it does balance up. For example, Arsenal had one last week against Manchester City that was given offside. It’s so marginal to the naked eye, so it’s a decision at the moment you have to accept.

INCIDENT: Alexandre Lacazette appeared offside in the build-up to their second goal, scored by Sanchez.

DERMOT SAYS: If you highlight it, his arm is in an offside position but you can’t score with your arm so therefore you can’t give offside. Again, it’s so, so, tight. The assistant has to be convinced he’s offside and he can’t, so he has to keep his flag down.

INCIDENT: Vincent Kompany picked up a yellow card after just two minutes for a tackle on Jamie Vardy, who was running through on goal, but should it have been a sending off?

DERMOT SAYS: If it’s not a foul, Vardy takes one more step and it’s a clear shot on goal.

The difficulty for the referee is that he’s square on. When he sees the foul, the time he looks up John Stones has come across and the whole picture has changed. He can’t snap photograph it in his mind - you see it forensically it’s a red card, but from the referee’s angle he’s deceived because of the ball going away and Stones coming in on the cover. I think the easy decision would have been to send him off - the decision he took was the harder one as it was more logical to him and the more justifiable one in his mind.

INCIDENT: Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot as Scott Dann was deemed to have blocked off Oumar Niasse as he ran into the box.

DERMOT SAYS: From the first angle I’d say, yes, it’s a penalty - but from the angle behind the goal I’d say no. I feel for the referee here. It’s not a foul. In terms of retrospective action it’s difficult to call as with the parameters they’ve set, it’s a question of whether there’s enough contact to put him down. If Niasse says the arm across his chest put him down, the referee couldn’t see that. The referee has given a foul for a trip - but he’s not tripped.

INCIDENT: Andy Carroll didn’t take long to make his presence felt during West Ham’s 2-0 defeat at Watford as he flattened Marvin Zeegelaar after just six seconds with a flying elbow. No foul was awarded.

DERMOT SAYS: I think it’s a yellow card - it’s very similar to when he got sent off at Burnley for a second yellow card. He leads with the arm but doesn’t throw his arm. The difficulty for the referee is that he’s inside the field of play when Carroll is using his other arm. He can’t possibly see it as he doesn’t give a free-kick.
