Cáceres looking forward to training camp

Show/hide article…

The experienced defender signed on a deal until the end of the season on Thursday, ahead of the club’s trip to Spain for a training camp the following day.

The trip will provide Cáceres with the perfect opportunity to get to know his new teammates, and it’s one he’s looking forward to.

“I think the best thing about the trip that we’re going on to Alicante will be that I can spend some time with the group,” he told southamptonfc.com.

“That’s not just out on the training pitch, but immersing myself in all aspects of the club and getting to know my teammates better, whether that’s at meal times or in the dressing room.

“That is a process that I enjoy as a person because becoming part of a new team again is all about sharing and getting on the same wavelength as my teammates.”

The trip will also provide Cáceres with an opportunity to show Claude Puel his current fitness levels.

Cáceres is yet to play competitively this season, as he looked to recover from an injury he suffered while with Juventus, but believes he is in good condition ahead of the trip.

“Physically I’m really good. I feel like I’m over the injury that I had, that made me stop for six months,” the 29 year-old added.

“It makes things a bit complicated for a player because what every player needs is to play and time with the ball.

“But I feel very good physically and I am confident I can get back to where I was. The only thing that I’m lacking now is to spend time with the team, which is what I want.”

Handing Caceres a Wembley debut would be a big “gamble” says Benali

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Francis Benali insists it would be a big “gamble” for Claude Puel to hand new signing Martin Caceres a dramatic Wembley debut.

The centre-back has not played for more than a year and Benali believes that it would be “near on impossible” for the Uruguayan to be fit for the showpiece final against Manchester United at Wembley a week tomorrow.

The former Juventus and Barcelona man, who joined Saints as a free agent on a short-term deal until the end of the season, was last in competitive action on 3 February 2016, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Claude Puel will soon establish the 29-year-old’s fitness levels after the new recruit joined up with Saints for their warm weather training camp in Spain.

While former defender Benali recognises the importance of bringing in a new centre-back, he speculates that the League Cup final will come too soon for Caceres.

“It’s a good thing for the club to have another player around,” he said. “It seems a risk-free arrangement and makes sense, considering his previous fitness problems, to bring him in on a short-term deal.

“Apart from the wages he’s cost nothing and will provide added depth to the squad.

“Saints have lost a lot of quality with Virgil van Dijk’s injury and it was crucial bring someone in.

“But with the transfer window closed their hands were tied in terms of who they could bring in.

“Another injury in the squad would have caused big problems, so this makes everyone more comfortable.

“It’s a sensible signing and it could well pay off, but I wouldn’t imagine he’d be involved at Wembley … that’s near on impossible.

“If he hasn’t been playing at a competitive level it would be a big gamble.

“If I were the manager I would want to know what he’s all about and ease him in to the team.

“It would be a pretty big call to play him at Wembley.”

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have been Puel’s first choice centre-back partnership since Van Dijk’s injury and Jose Fonte’s departure to West Ham.

While there have been moments where the duo have looked fragile, they’ve also put in stellar performances - especially at Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final second leg victory.

Benali praised Yoshida and Stephens for their displays so far.

“It’s a decision for Puel and I wouldn’t be surprised if if he had a good idea on his line-up at Wembley already,” he said.

“Yoshida has come in and not let anyone down, while young Stephens has done very well.

“They had to do a lot of defending at Liverpool and it was a massive night for them.”

Regular games have helped, says Redmond

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond believes Southampton have reaped the reward of playing in a variety of competitions this season ahead of their EFL Cup Final appearance next week.

Although Saints are now out of the UEFA Europa League and Emirates FA Cup this season, Redmond feels that the increased demands have helped the squad in their quest to win some major silverware.

Claude Puel’s side head to Wembley Stadium next Sunday on the back of a rare break from the action following their 4-0 win at Sunderland in the Premier League a week ago, and Redmond hopes the added preparation time together as a squad will benefit all of the players.

“We’ve managed to get a full week’s worth of training,” Redmond noted ahead of their Wembley date. “Obviously we’ve been having games every couple of days.

“It’s tough but I played in the Championship for three, four years so it is no different to me but going from Europa League to Premier League to the League Cup is a bit different but it has been challenging and I think we can look back on this season and we’ll have played at Wembley and fighting for a top 10, eight finish.”

Saints have been further boosted by the arrivals of new signings Manolo Gabbiadini and Martín Cáceres, with the former having made a promising start to life in England thanks to three goals in two games.

“It’s obviously fantastic for his confidence,” said Redmond, who added:

“Wembley will take care of itself. It is a one-off game and the league is the most important thing. And that is what we focused on.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world. So much talent in each side. Everyone is capable of beating everyone on any given day.

“It’s been a fantastic week leading up to the game.”
