#MarchToWembley: Saints 2-0 Crystal Palace

Show/hide article…

Young midfielder Jake Hesketh netted his first senior goal to help Southampton to a 2-0 success against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup at St Mary’s.

Saints were set on their way to a third straight home victory in all competitions and a place into the Fourth Round when Charlie Austin dispatched a penalty beyond the reach of Wayne Hennessey for his fourth goal in three games.

And when Shane Long saw his effort parried away by Hennessey just after the hour mark, Hesketh was alive to the rebound and delivered the killer blow against former Saints boss Alan Pardew’s side.

Victory ensured that the Saints fine record against Palace continues, having previously won seven of their last ten matches across all competitions against the Eagles.

IT WAS REALLY SPECIAL AND IT’S A NIGHT I’VE DREAMED OF SINCE I WAS YOUNGER.

WE LOOK TO WIN EVERY GAME AND THIS IS THE FIRST COMPETITION AWAY FROM THE LEAGUE THAT WE CAN LOOK TO WIN.

I THINK IT IS VERY INTERESTING FOR THE FUTURE AND WE CAN GIVE ALSO GAME TIME FOR THE YOUNG PLAYERS, LIKE REED OR HESKETH.

U23 Report: Everton 2-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

The hosts took an early lead through Liam Walsh after just four minutes at Goodison Park, before Kieran Dowell then confirmed the win with a fine strike eight minutes from time.

Martin Hunter and Radhi Jaïdi made just two changes to the side that ran out 2-0 victors away at Bristol City in the Premier League Cup last week.

Jake Hesketh made his first start back since injury and was given the captain’s armband for the fixture in the absence of Alfie Jones.

Whilst Jake Vokins slotted straight back in at left back upon his return from international duty with England Under-17s – pushing Will Wood along to fill in at centre half.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides and created a number of early openings before eventually breaking the deadlock after four minutes.

Dowell spotted Walsh breaking into the penalty area and slotted the midfielder through, who then provided a neat finish past Harry Lewis and into the bottom left corner to take the lead.

Saints started to steady the ship after their early blip and were soon seeing more of the ball. But despite growing into the game, it was the hosts that fashioned the only other clear-cut opportunity of the half.

Antonee Robinson made his way to the left byline and cut back into the Saints penalty area for the onrushing Harry Charsley, but he dragged his effort wide of Lewis’ far post with just five minutes of the first half remaining.

Saints almost profited from a more direct approach immediately after the restart. Olomola broke through into the Everton penalty area and tried his luck from a tight angle, but was unable to steer his strike inside Mateusz Hewelt’s near post.

The hosts then made a double change on the hour mark, as David Henen and Bassala Sambou were introduced in favour of Joe Williams and Courtney Duffus.

Hunter and Jaidi responded with two changes of their own, as Hesketh and Marcus Barnes made way for Thomas O’Connor and Tyreke Johnson.

Everton substitute Henen almost made an immediate impact on the match. Charging forwards from the halfway line he unleashed a fierce strike from 25-yards out, but watched on as it fell just wide of Lewis’ right post.

The Toffees did eventually double their tally with just eight minutes remaining, though. Intelligent interplay down the right flank teed up Dowell on the edge of the penalty area, who then rifled in a left-footed drive to confirm the victory.

Barca identify Southampton’s Cedric Soares as solution to right-back issue

Show/hide article…

January has come and gone, but Transfer Talk is already monitoring the whispers ahead of all the summer moves. Check out all the latest deals here.

Barcelona are weighing up a summer move for a new right-back – and the player they could turn to is Southampton’s Cedric Soares, according to the Telegraph.

Portugal international Cedric joined the Saints from Sporting Lisbon for a fee approaching £5 million in 2015 and is under contract with them until 2020.

And the Telegraph says that means Barca would have to pay “at least £15m” in order to bring him to the Camp Nou.

It adds that they are looking to sign another right-back “having suffered problems in that position since the departure of Dani Alves” and see Cedric as a player whose style would suit them.

But the paper adds that with the Saints facing uncertainty over the futures of defenders Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand – linked with Chelsea and Manchester City respectively – they “would be extremely reluctant to sell him.”

He has only been at White Hart Lane since the final day of the summer window, but it appears AC Milan are increasingly confident that they will be able to tempt Moussa Sissoko to Italy come the season’s end.

Spurs signed Sissoko for a club record £30m, but life in London has not so far worked out as the France midfielder, 27, might have imagined.

He has made only six Premier League starts since arriving from Newcastle, and the Mirror reports that Milan are among “a number of clubs monitoring his situation.”

Meanwhile, Schalke are poised to sign midfielder Nabil Bentaleb on a permanent deal from Spurs, according to the London Evening Standard.

It says Bentaleb, on loan at the Bundesliga club, will move for £16m at the end of the season after reports in Germany suggested his weekend appearance had “triggered an option in the deal that will ensure a transfer goes ahead.”

The Algeria international is out of the first-team picture at White Hart Lane, and the Standard adds that although neither club has confirmed a full-time move “it is understood Spurs are prepared for his departure.”

Bentaleb, 22, came through the Tottenham academy ranks and has hit four goals for Schalke so far this season.

Are Isco and James Rodriguez both on their way out of the Santiago Bernabeu? Will Liverpool land a transfer coup in signing World Cup winner Mario Gotze?

Craig Burley takes a look at some of the more likely moves to come this summer:

  • Both Crystal Palace and Watford are interested in Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, according to the Sun.

Citing reports in Italy, it says the 23-year-old Gabon international would cost around £17m. He has previously been reported to be a potential target for Arsenal, Monaco and Leicester after failing to become a regular first choice under Massimiliano Allegri.

But Watford and Palace have emerged as the favourites – although any Palace bid would depend on whether they can save their Premier League status.

  • Sky Sports says that despite reports linking Hull City’s Abel Hernandez with a move to Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan, no official bid has so far been received by the Premier League strugglers.

The forward is part of the Hull squad that travelled to Portugal for warm-weather training – but with the Chinese transfer window not closing until the end of the month, there is still time for a £15m deal to be done.

Jose Mourinho set to drop key man for EFL Cup final next weekend

Show/hide article…

Wayne Rooney is facing Wembley heartache in Sunday’s EFL Cup Final against Southampton.

The Manchester United and England skipper is set to miss out on a starting place in Jose Mourinho’s line-up.

Rooney, 31, has not started for United since the FA Cup win over Wigan on January 29 and missed Sunday’s win over Blackburn because of root canal treatment on his teeth.

The striker, who has just five goals this season, had missed three games before Blackburn with a muscle injury.

Mourinho admitted after the Rovers winner, which has earned United a quarter-final against Chelsea, that he “doesn’t know” if Rooney will be available for Sunday.

Rooney faces a fight to win a starting place if he is fit and he has slipped to bottom of United’s pecking order of strikers.

Zlatan Ibrahimovich, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford are all ahead of him.

His last action for United was as a substitute in the goalless Premier League draw with Hull at the start of the month.

Rooney, who became United’s record goalscorer last month, will be gutted if he does miss out as the League Cup brought him his first honour in 2006 when United beat Wigan in the final.

Hunter: We expect higher standards

Show/hide article…

The Toffees sealed victory with goals from Liam Walsh and Kieran Dowell to move six points clear at the top of the table, though Hunter feels Saints didn’t give a good account of themselves.

“It’s a great disappointment,” he started.

“You can understand why they are top of the league by a good margin, they are a very good team and I have to say we could not cope with them.

“Especially in the first half when they created numerous chances. In the second half we played in sporadic periods, but nothing like as well as we would like.”

It took the hosts just four minutes to take the lead in the encounter, as Walsh finished neatly past Harry Lewis in the Saints goal.

And Hunter pinpointed the slow start as one of the main factors for defeat.

“If you let them start as they can do it becomes very tough,” he continued.

“That is one of the things we talked about, the importance of starting both halves brightly, especially here. They are a good team but we expect higher standards from our players.

“We have young players who have aspirations to go on and train with the first team, but they are going to have to do better than that to give them a chance to move up the ladder.”

Hesketh: It’s nice to be back

Show/hide article…

The 20-year-old played an hour during Saints’ 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park, though admitted his return was soured somewhat by the disappointing result.

“I am a bit tired after that, to be fair,” he explained.

“It’s been a frustrating few months for me, so it’s nice to be back; I just wish it were in slightly better circumstances.

“I’ve had a few setbacks, but hopefully they will make me tougher mentally. I’ve also spent a lot of time with the fitness coaches working on different things, so hopefully that will continue to stand me in good stead.”

Hesketh captained Saints for the Premier League 2 encounter, starting in midfield alongside Callum Slattery and Armani Little.

And although the game marked a positive moment in his recovery, he admitted that the result and performance left a lot to be desired.

“It possibly could have been more,” he continued.

“It wasn’t anywhere near our best or what we are capable of, but we’ve got to learn from it – we have an important game coming up against Newcastle.

“They aren’t top of the table for no reason. They have a good group of players, but that isn’t any excuse for us – we weren’t good enough tonight.”

No big financial reward on offer for Saints at Wembley

Show/hide article…

SAINTS will receive the same miserly amount of prize money as the winners of the Checkatrade Trophy if they win the League Cup – and they’ll start next season at the end of July!

In this multi-million pound Premier League era, it is quite astonishing to note that only £100,000 will be handed over to the triumphant side at the national arena on Sunday.

That is the same amount of money that will be dished out to the victors of the far lower profile Checkatrade Trophy, which Saints won in 2010 under its former guise the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and is traditionally a tournament for League One and Two sides.

Having beaten Premier League Burnley 1-0 in the FA Cup fifth round, non-league Lincoln City will have earned nearly double what Saints will pocket if they beat Manchester United.

The Imps collected around £180,000 for their win at Turf Moor, while in total £1.8m is up for grabs for the winners of the FA Cup.

While the financial gain isn’t enormous, winning their first major silverware in 41 years does come packaged with a big incentive for Saints – European qualification.

Winning the cup would go down as one of the most iconic moments in the club’s 132-year history and reaching Europe also fulfils another one of their goals this term.

It would be the third consecutive season they reached the Europa League - after only one European campaign in 30 years prior - and on this occasion they would have to tread a familiar path in to the continental competition.

Just as they did under Ronald Koeman in 2015/16, Claude Puel’s men would enter the Europa League at the third qualifying stage.

They would then play their first third qualifying round leg on 27 July, before the second leg on 3 August. That game would come a little more than a week before the start of the Premier League campaign.

Saints will then go into a play-off double leg for a place in the group stages.

The draw for that is set for 4 August, before the first and second leg on the 17th and 24th of the same month.

Saints entered the third qualifying stage last season, beating Vitesse Arnhem 5-0 on aggregate. Koeman’s side then failed to overcome Danish champions Midtjylland in the play-off, losing 2-1 over the two legs.

Tottenham enter race for £15m Prem star: Other top flight sides keen too

Show/hide article…

Everton and Southampton are already looking at the 23-year-old centre back, who has been in the form of his life for the last few weeks. But Spurs are also interested and that could spark a bidding war this summer for a player Hull value at around £15m. Both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have spent time injured this season while doubts remain about the future of Kevin Wimmer. That has prompted Mauricio Pochettino to scour the market for a defender, and Maguire fits the bill because he can play in a back four or a back three.

Hull do not want to lose a player who has come into his own during their recent revival but could be forced to sell as he is out of contract in June 2018. Spurs welcomed Vertonghen back from an ankle injury in their 3-0 win over Fulham on Sunday. And the Belgium international insists Tottenham’s displays this season are worthy of a trophy. He said: “I won silverware at Ajax and it’s the best thing there is in football. This team deserve a trophy.

“We improved a lot. We’re stronger, the gaffer’s had his time to work with us, we understand the way he wants us to play.” Hat-trick hero Harry Kane reckons if Spurs get past Millwall in the quarter finals they will have an advantage over their biggest rivals for the FA Cup. Spurs are already playing European home games at Wembley and face Gent there on Thursday in the Europa League. Their Champions League campaign at the national stadium got off to a disastrous start with defeats against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen before they finally registered a win against CSKA Moscow in a dead rubber.

Even so, Kane claims their Wembley experience can still give them an edge in the later stages of the cup. He said: “We had a little taste of it in the Champions League. The more games we play there, the better it will be for us. “If we get through the next round of the FA Cup the semi will be at Wembley. We have got to try and make it our home. “We could be playing there next season so we want to make it as good as possible for us, win as many games as we can there and get that confidence going. “The more we play there, the further we will be going in competitions. It is important that we try to do that.”

“Nobody expects” a Saints win at Wembley … but Cedric’s been here before

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ run to the League Cup final bears all the hallmarks of Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 campaign.

That’s the verdict of the man who is aiming to celebrate his second stunning cup triumph in the space of eight amazing months.

After helping his nation to shock Euros glory last summer, Portuguese ace Cedric Soares will be at right-back when Saints take on Manchester United at Wembley in the League Cup final.

The 25-year-old has reflected that “nobody expected” Portugal to win against favourites France - and nor did anyone think Saints would be in a position to win their first major title in 41 years.

Similarly to Saints in the League Cup, Portugal were by no means favourites at the tournament in France. Their odds of winning at the start of the competition were 20/1.

ABOVE: Saints celebrate winning at Anfield in the League Cup semi-final second leg.

But despite limping through the group stages with three draws, Fernando Santos’ side eventually defeated the host in the final at the Stade de France.

Cedric did not play in the groups, but was drafted in the knockout rounds, playing each of the four games as Portugal won their first-ever major international honours.

Now, the attacking full-back is aiming to help Saints win their first League Cup title in history.

“Nobody expected Portugal to do it in the Euros and here for Saints is the same,” he said. “Nobody expected Saints to come to this stage, to Wembley.

“We need to enjoy it, but we must get the win because we don’t always get these moments in life.

“We just need to do everything to achieve the win because in ten years time you want to look back and remember what a great game we had there, what a moment it was and you’d pay anything to come back and do everything again.

“This is the same feeling for Portugal. Of course, the Euros is a bigger competition, but still this is a trophy and we will fight for it.”

ABOVE: Cedric and his Portugal team-mates are paraded on an open-top bus after winning Euro 2016.

Portugal won just one game in 90 minutes during the Euros run and, despite being generally unspectacular throughout, they prevailed.

Cedric has clearly bought into the ethos that it isn’t always the team with the best players that will triumph, and that being tough and organised can produce results, even if it isn’t always pretty.

It is a “mentality” that the former Sporting Lisbon man believes Saints also possess.

“It’s a final and, like I used to say, in a final you don’t need to play, you just need to win,” he smiled.

“This is our mentality and how we are going to play this game.

“We’ve achieved this final and we deserve it as well and now we need to just enjoy the game and try for the win because now everything can happen.

“It is Manchester and we need to respect them, but they also know it’s a final and anything can happen.

“We believe we can win, but will respect our opponent and try our best to get the win.”

ABOVE: Cedric celebrates winning the Euros last summer.

So has Cedric dreamt of lifting the trophy at Wembley?

“I don’t want to think about this before the game,” he said. “But we will play this game like it’s our last game. It would be massive if we got the trophy.”

Cedric arrived at St Mary’s in June 2015, for £4.7m from Sporting.

And although he wasn’t there at the time he knows the pain Saints went through, having risen back up from near financial collapse from League One.

“Southampton have had some tough moments before when the club was in the second division,” he said. “But they’ve fought back and now they are getting better and better every year.

“This is a good sign and going to this final is already massive and very good for the club.”
