Who is the Premier League’s most influential captain?

Show/hide article…

Fretting over who wears the armband is a particularly British obsession, with intangible notions of ‘passion’ and ‘desire’ very much to the fore.

We are now in the era of the 25-man squad however, and it is not uncommon for club captains to find first-team opportunities limited. Based on minutes played in the Premier League this season and their team’s win percentage when they do play, we ranked the division’s captains in order of prominence.

Ward-Prowse: Fans can play a huge part

Show/hide article…

More than 32,000 of the club’s supporters are heading to Wembley to cheer on their side against Manchester United, and Ward-Prowse believes they can help make the difference.

"They can be massively important,” said the midfielder. “I’ve lost count of the number of occasions over the years where the fans have really got behind us and made sure that they are that 12th man, and they do help us.

“I think they will play a big part, but hopefully the way we perform and the way we play can get them off the edge of their seats and make sure that they’re cheering us on and really giving us that last bit of support that we need to get over the line.”

While United will pose plenty of challenges, Ward-Prowse says the focus for Saints is more on their own game than the opposition.

"I think we have to be solely focused on ourselves,” he said.

“I think there’s got to be an element of what the opposition does and how we can counteract that, but we have to be focused on ourselves and make sure we assert ourselves, especially early in the game, to be on the front foot and let them know they’re in for a game.

“Obviously, we have to show them respect, but we ultimately want to win the match and we’ll do everything to make sure we can do that.”

How long is it since each Premier League club won a major honour?

Show/hide article…

As they cruised to a 3-0 win at Fulham on Sunday to progress a round further in the FA Cup, it was pointed out that Tottenham’s current trophy drought stood at 3,282 days.

An arbitrary number at first glance but, crucially, one more day than their rival Arsenal’s infamous trophy gap between winning the FA Cup in 2005 and the same trophy in 2014. One day, now two days… and counting.

The last time Spurs made an addition to their trophy cabinet was on February 24, 2008 when they won the League Cup and Mauricio Pochettino is determined to end the agonising wait as quickly as possible.

But how long has it been since each of the Premier League clubs last won a major trophy?

And by major trophy, we mean either the Premier League or old first division, the FA Cup, League Cup or one of the main European honours.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 30, 2015 = 633 days or one year, eight months and 22 days

Having finally ended their long wait for a trophy by beating Hull City in the FA Cup final of 2014, the Gunners made it back-to-back successes when they thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 in 2015.

Bournemouth haven’t won a major honour by our definition but they did win the Championship title in 2015 to earn top-flight status for the first time in their history. That was one year and 295 days ago.

Last major trophy: First Division; May 2, 1960 = 20,749 days or 56 years, nine months and 19 days

The last time the Clarets were top-flight champions was back in 1960, when they finished a point clear of Wolverhampton Wanderers to claim their second First Division title.

They did, of course, win the second-tier Championship last season, so there have been more recent celebrations.

Last major trophy: Premier League; May 24, 2015 = 639 days or one year, eight months and 28 days.

The Blues are on course for another Premier League trophy and they last won it in 2015, with Jose Mourinho at the helm. Blues fans have certainly been blessed with plenty of modern-day success so no major droughts to speak of.

Unfortunately, Palace haven’t won any of the major trophies on our list, with their last league success coming when they won the old First Division in 1993-94, earning promotion to the Premier League. That was 22 years and 301 days ago.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 20, 1995 = 7,948 days or 21 years, nine months and one day.

Everton defeated Manchester United to lift the FA Cup at Wembley in 1995, but little did they know then it would be a wait of over two decades (and counting) for the next one.

Hull haven’t claimed any of the trophies on our list. Indeed, the last time they won a league title was the old Third Division back in 1965-66, a wait of 50 years and 289 days.

They did come close in 2014, when they led Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup final, only for the Gunners to fight back and win.

Leicester’s miraculous Premier League triumph last season remains very fresh in the memory - and is unlikely to ever be forgotten. Prior to that, you would go back to their League Cup win in 2000.

Last major trophy: League Cup; February 26, 2012 = 1,822 days or four years, 11 months and 26 days.

There have been plenty of trophies in Liverpool’s long and illustrious history but the last came back in 2012 when they defeated Cardiff City on penalties to win their eighth League Cup. Their last league title was back in 1990.

City beat Liverpool on penalties to lift the League Cup at Wembley last season, the fourth time they have won the competition. The last of their four league titles came back in 2014.

United claimed the only trophy of Louis van Gaal’s reign when they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in extra time to win their 12th FA Cup.

United will hope to add another piece of silverware, the EFL Cup, when they meet Southampton on Sunday. But they have now waited four years for a Premier League crown.

Last major trophy: League Cup; February 29, 2004 = 4,741 days or 12 years, 11 months and 23 days.

Middlesbrough won the first and so far only major honour of their history back in 2004, defeating Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 1, 1976 = 14,906 days or 40 years, nine months and 20 days.

The Saints will try and end a 41-year wait for a major honour when they take on Manchester United in the EFL Cup final this weekend. They beat United 1-0 to claim the FA Cup back in 1976, the club’s finest hour.

Last major trophy: League Cup; March 4, 1972 = 16,425 days or 44 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Stoke recorded a famous League Cup triumph when they beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley back in 1972. More recent successes have included the Football League Trophy in 1992 and 2000, and the Second Division in 1993.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 5, 1973 = 15,998 days or 43 years, nine months and 16 days.

Second division Sunderland caused a minor sensation when they upset Leeds United to win the FA Cup back in 1973, the second time in their history they won the competition. The Black Cats won the Championship in 2007, securing their top-flight status.

Last major trophy: League Cup; February 24, 2013 = 1,458 days or three years, 11 months and 28 days.

Swansea won the League Cup four years ago with an emphatic 5-0 win over League Two Bradford City at Wembley, quite the achievement after spending much of their existence in the lower divisions.

Last major trophy: League Cup; February 24, 2008 = 3,282 days or eight years, 11 months and 26 days.

The aforementioned Tottenham trophy drought dates back to 2008, when they beat Chelsea in extra time to win the League Cup.

Spurs have won plenty in their past, however, but their last league triumph was way back in 1961.

The Hornets don’t meet the major trophy criteria and the last time they won silverware was in taking the Third Division in 1998.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 18, 1968 = 17,811 days or 48 years, nine months and three days.

Albion have won the FA Cup on five occasions, the latest of which was in 1968 when they beat Everton 1-0. They won the Championship back in 2008 to reach the top-flight.

Last major trophy: FA Cup; May 10, 1980 = 13,436 days or 36 years, nine months and 11 days.

West Ham’s win over Arsenal in 1980, courtesy of Trevor Brooking’s goal, was the last time a team from outside the top-flight has won the Cup.

Matt Le Tissier has challenged Southampton’s players to become legends by beating Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier wants the Southampton squad to join him in the club’s hall of fame and become legends by winning the EFL Cup.

Southampton face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on Sunday live on Sky Sports, which is their first major final appearance since the 2003 FA Cup against Arsenal.

Robert Pires’ goal saw off the Saints at the Millennium Stadium, meaning the 1976 FA Cup victory remains their only major trophy in the club’s history.

“We’ve only ever won one major trophy in our history, so to double that would be quite something,” Le Tissier, who played 443 games for Southampton, told Sky Sports News HQ.

“This is a chance for them players to put themselves down as legends at Southampton for the rest of their lives. The guys that won the cup in 1976 are still revered to this day.”

Claude Puel’s men go into the game as clear underdogs as their recent form in the Premier League has dipped below their usual standards.

Southampton’s 4-0 win over Sunderland in their last fixture came after a run of six defeats from their previous seven matches, which had left them just eight points above the relegation zone.

Despite their indifferent form in the Premier League, Le Tissier thinks a Wembley win would help make this season one to remember.

“If we finished in the top 10 and won a major trophy, you’d take that all day long even though we’ve not played great at times,” he said.

"It would be a massive step forward for the club. They’ve got their league position better for the last seven years but the only missing was a cup run. This is their first chance in 41 years to win a major trophy.

“It would be another building block in the way the club see themselves as one that want to be challenging for Europe and trophies every season. That way you can attract players easier and keep hold of your stars for a bit longer.”

Fatigue could play a part at Wembley as Southampton will have had two weeks without a match, whereas United will have played three times since then.

Le Tissier thinks the level of freshness within the camp could that give Southampton the edge.

“Hopefully that makes a bit of a difference - it could even things out a little bit,” he said.

“Three games in 15 days doesn’t sound much, but when you put that against Southampton having no games, we certainly know which team will be fresher going into the final.”

305 reasons why Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the man Saints must keep quiet at Wembley

Show/hide article…

ZLATAN Ibrahimovic has never been slow when it comes to self-promotion.

Only recently, he likened himself to 1980s film star Indiana Jones.

“Every trophy for me is incredible, everywhere I came I won so if I can win something here I will be super happy,” he said of his time at Manchester United.

“Wherever I went I won, so I am like Indiana Jones.”

Jones and the Swedish superstar have something else in common - they have both never won the English League Cup.

Ibrahimovic obviously has the chance to add that piece of silverware to his incredible domestic collection (13 league titles in his last 15 seasons prior to the current one) when United face Saints at Wembley.

Of course, the 35-year-old striker doesn’t need to talk himself up.

Not really, not when his phenomenal goalscoring record says it all for him.

In terms of top flight goals, the three forwards Claude Puel can call upon at Wembley - Shane Long (44 in the Premier League), Manolo Gabbiadini (41 in Serie A and the Premier League) and Jay Rodriguez (25 in the Premier League) - have 110 strikes between them.

Ibrahimovic, in his remarkable career, has 305 - with the promise of more to come.

Of those, 122 were scored in Serie A for Inter (57), AC Milan (42) and Juventus (23).

Another 113 were netted in only four seasons and 122 French Ligue games for Paris St Germain.

The Swede struck 35 goals in the Dutch Eredivisie for Ajax and added 16 more goals in his sole La Liga season with Barcelona.

His remaining four top flight goals were scored for Malmo in the Swedish Allsvenskan.

In addition to all that, this is the man who has 62 goals for the Swedish national team and another 56 in European games.

His recent Europa League treble against St Etienne at Old Trafford was his 17th hat-trick in club football.

Compare that to Long, Rodriguez and Gabbiadini who have only ever collected one match ball between them playing club football.

And that was Rodriguez for scoring four goals for Burnley against then fourth tier Burton Albion in the League Cup in 2011/12.

Ibrahimovic’s hunger for goals has shown absolutely no sign of slowing up.

Since the start of 2013/14, he has plundered 133 club goals for Paris SG and United.

He scored 36, 29 and 44 in his last three seasons in France and his hat-trick against St Etienne last Thursday took his United tally to 23.

Yesterday, after coming on as a second half sub, he struck goal number 24 in United’s FA Cup win at Championship strugglers Blackburn Rovers.

Last season, including his international goals, he netted 50 times in 51 appearances.

Those tallies starkly illustrate the depth of the task facing Maya Yoshida and young Jack Stephens at Wembley.
