Hughes could be the “perfect fit”

Show/hide article…

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg believes Mark Hughes could prove to be the “perfect fit” for Saints after he guided the club to the FA Cup semi-finals in his first game in charge.

Hughes took over from Mauricio Pellegrino last week and immediately went about upping the intensity on the training pitch and demanding more work from the squad.

It proved vital at the weekend as Saints defeated plucky League One side Wigan in difficult conditions at the DW Stadium to secure their place at Wembley in the last four.

Hojbjerg, who scored his first goal for Saints to give them the lead, said: “I think I speak on everyone’s behalf when it’s been positive and he has given energy and good vibes, a new fresh start.

“He worked a lot on intensity and the discipline and desire to take the extra meters, to do what we have to do as a team and an individual in our own position and the basics.

“I am looking forward to working more with him and his assistants.

“Like we have said many times we have a really good team, some really good players, and maybe this is the perfect fit. Nothing is perfect in this world but this is a good start.”

He added: “The coach said before the game that this game the key point is mentality and desire and hard work and we knew we had the quality, but to match a team like this you have to put the work in, put the battle on, and I think we did that.

“It’s difficult to say that people maybe don’t understand you come to this side, in these conditions, to a team doing well in their league, who has beaten three Premier League teams in the FA Cup and it’s not an easy task.

“We did it in a good way, a solid way, and we can take a lot from the game.

“Most important we can take a good experience for the game.

“I am happy for the team, for the club, and that the fans have something to smile about in the cold weather.”

It was a big bounce back for Saints after their humbling at Newcastle the previous week.

“It’s a great achievement. I think as a player I am really happy for the club, the new coach and most important for the fans who we can give a good experience after what happened last week,” reflected Hojbjerg.

“This is nice, a great feeling and also football. One week ago the world went down and today we are in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

“This of course doesn’t change the standing on the league but let’s focus on this and smile about the semi-final.

“After defeat you always want to hit back even harder and I think we did that today.

“Great credit to Wigan. They didn’t come so far for nothing, they are a great side with quality.

“I am happy, we had to show in our moments, kill the game and it’s a good feeling.”

Ryan Bertrand insists going back to basics could stave off relegation

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes has stripped Southampton back to basics during his first few days in charge.

The new manager, who lined up with an old-fashioned 4-4-2 at Wigan in the FA Cup, told his players to start mastering the fundamentals in their fight for survival.

Ryan Bertrand, now away with England on international duty, believes that could see Southampton edge over the line.

‘We’ve just been working on the basics,’ Bertrand said after booking a Wembley semi-final against Chelsea. 'Refining the basics and upping our levels, our intensity and our attitude towards the game.

'It’s not really been an issue but where do you start? You come into a new team and it’s common sense to start there.

‘I’m looking forward to playing the remainder of the season with him. He’s been there and done it.’

Bertrand admitted the Southampton players must carry the can for Mauricio Pellegrino’s sacking and he already has one eye on the must-win clash away at West Ham a week on Saturday.

‘It’s a shared responsibility, from the manager to the players,’ the left back added. 'But when push comes to shove unfortunately it’s the manager that gets the bad end of it.

'It’s definitely a massive game. It’s something you might as well look forward to. There is no other way. You go there and relish the opportunity because if you come out of there with a result it leaves you in very good stead.

‘Just getting a win means you can take confidence from that. We can take progressing in the FA Cup into the league.’

Charles heartened by Saints fitness drive

Show/hide article…

Charles Massey thought he was fit and healthy for a man entering his late seventies.

So he was shocked to be told he needed heart bypass surgery.

“I didn’t think there was anything wrong,” Charles, who turns 80 in August, says. “But they wouldn’t let me out of hospital.”

He had the operation last April but the next challenge was to return to health.

“The doctors told me that after my surgery, I needed to keep doing a certain amount of exercise.”

As someone who had been supporting Southampton for 70 years, Charles was delighted to have a solution close to the club.

"I knew of Saints Foundation, so I thought, ‘Well, I’ll be involved with something to do with the Saints.’ "

He signed up for the Generation Gains programme that is run by the club’s charitable arm.

“The Generation Gains project works with older adults in the community of Southampton,” says Saints Foundation health and wellbeing project officer Marion Gealer.

“We like to think that we are providing a service that’s fun, to come along and meet other people and work on their health and wellbeing and get some exercise.”

By improving their fitness and core stability the programme tries to reduce the risk of falls by those involved.

It also tackles isolation among the elderly, giving participants like Charles the opportunity to meet other people and keep socially active.

“It makes me feel like I’m still able to communicate and talk to people,” Charles says. "I find that it does me a lot of good.

“Everyone who comes here enjoys it a lot.”

Charles is one of more than 300 people whom Generation Gains helps every week.

His story is part of the Saints Together campaign, which highlights the connection between the club, the Foundation and the community.

Bertrand says Southampton boss Hughes has changed one thing - and it’s working

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand claims Mark Hughes has made an instant impact with his back-to-basics approach at Southampton.

Southampton were more resolute against Wigan in their first game under new boss Hughes as they showed their class to reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

Hughes has introduced zonal marking as he improves the basics of defending, work rate and attitude and Bertrand says his approach is already working.

“We’ve just been working on the basics in our first couple of days with him,” said the Saints skipper.

“Just refining the basics and upping our levels, our intensity and our attitude towards the game.

“That hasn’t really been an issue, but where do you start? You come into a new team and it’s common sense to start there.”

Hughes’ appointment on a short-term deal until the end of the season has lifted the Southampton dressing room and Bertrand says the players are impressed by his achievements as a player and manager.

As Hughes proudly states, he has never been relegated in 14 years as a club manager and kept Blackburn up in 2005 and QPR in 2012.

“He’s been there and done it,” said the England left-back. “Even as a player, he’s vastly experienced as well and whatever he can share with us, hopefully we can use it and do what we need to do.

“My initial impressions are very good, very good. I’m looking forward to playing the remainder of the season with him.”

Saints are in the bottom three and Bertrand claims beating giantkillers Wigan has boosted them for their next league game against West Ham on March 31.

“That’s what it’s about - getting a win and taking confidence from that,” he said. “We can take progressing in the competition into the league.

“West Ham is definitely a massive game. It’s something you might as well look forward to. There is no other way. You go there and relish the opportunity because if you come out of there with a result, it leaves you in very good stead.”

Premier League and FA Cup weekend grades: Who impressed?

Show/hide article…

Who impressed at the weekend and who was not up to scratch?

We asked former England and West Ham striker Tony Cottee to grade each club on their display in the Premier League and FA Cup fixtures.

Read on to see who got top marks and who was bottom of the class…

The only reason they don’t get an A+ is because they didn’t get seven or eight when they could have done! It was another fantastic performance and Mohamed Salah is having an unbelievable season.

Fantastic result. They didn’t concede, looked solid and scored twice away from home. Roy Hodgson will be absolutely thrilled. They are still not out of it but this was a big win in their fight against relegation.

They did everything right and I fancy them in the FA Cup this year. They have had a couple of let-offs with the Newport and Rochdale games and I wonder if their name might be on the cup. It’s like a home game for them at Wembley in the semi-finals and I think they will get past Manchester United.

It was a good start to Mark Hughes’ time at the club and gives them something to build on as well as an FA Cup semi-final to look forward to. They have a big game against West Ham in a couple of weeks so they needed the confidence of getting a result here. It would have been easy to go to Wigan and get turned over but they managed to get the win and progress.

A good result for them which they needed after the disappointment of the Sevilla game. The FA Cup is ultimately about getting through to the next round and United managed to do that.

I was pleased for Cenk Tosun to get his goals. That’s important for the club after they spent a lot of money on him in January. Their away form has been terrible so this was a big three points and basically guarantees them safety.

They had a few chances in the first half and I’m giving them a ‘B’ for their display and their FA Cup exploits this season, beating Manchester City, West Ham and Bournemouth. It’s been a fantastic run and you can’t be too harsh on them. If they had taken any of their chances it would have been a different game.

Great result for them and they were certainly fighting for their manager. They had a bit of luck for the winning goal as Kasper Schmeichel wasn’t brilliant, but it was good bravery from Pedro to get the header and it was a good professional away performance. They will fancy their chances against Southampton in the semis.

Great result which they needed. They are still not completely safe but I think they have the character in their team where if they go behind they don’t worry about it and can come back and get a result. It looks like it’s going to be another Premier League season for them next year.

They are fighting to try to stay in the Premier League and were playing well and took the lead, but I think this was a game they needed to win. It’s hard to see them avoiding relegation now. Disappointing result for them in the end.

The red card changed the game. It was a lunge from Charlie Adam, the ball squirted away from him, and it’s one of those in-between tackles where if you get a yellow you say ‘alright’, and if you get a red you say ‘alright’. They were always chasing after the red card and it made a massive difference. After getting back on level terms they will be disappointed to concede and lose the game.

They got back into the game with Jamie Vardy’s goal but then I was thinking they would push on in extra-time and they didn’t really create many chances. Once Pedro got the second goal they didn’t look like getting an equaliser and it was a flat way to go out.

It was not unexpected that they lost but it was a poor performance. They didn’t look like scoring and they are lucky they have enough points that they should be okay come the end of the season.

It’s a really poor result for them. It wasn’t a game they had to win but don’t lose it. They didn’t create many chances and Palace deserved to win the match. It’s a defeat that puts Huddersfield in trouble and they have to be careful.

They were totally outplayed. Their league form has been excellent and that’s obviously their priority this season and it looked like that. It was flat.

They didn’t create that many chances and their main priority is to stay in the Premier League, so it wasn’t too unexpected that they lost this game. They have had a good season and as long as they stay in the Premier League they won’t mind about this too much.

Ryan Bertrand has backed Mark Hughes to keep Southampton up

Ryan Bertrand has backed Mark Hughes to lead Southampton to Premier League survival.

The Welshman took charge of his first game as manager on Sunday and booked an FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea with a 2-0 win over Wigan.

However, while Southampton celebrated their place in the last four, Crystal Palace’s win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday meant Hughes’ man fell back into the bottom three of the Premier League.

Hughes has eight games to save the Saints from relegation after replacing Mauricio Pellegrino on Wednesday, and Bertrand is impressed with what he has witnessed so far.

“Very good,” said the England International. "I’m looking forward to playing the remainder of the season with him.

“He’s been there and done it. Even as a player, he’s vastly experienced as well, and whatever he can share with us hopefully we can use and do what we need to do.”

Saints are two points from safety and have won just one of their last 17 games, with a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United proving to be the last straw for Pellegrino.

Bertrand offered an honest response to his former manager’s sacking, calling it a “shared responsibility” from the manager to the players, although he admitted that “when push comes to shove unfortunately it’s the manager that gets the bad end of it.”

Bertrand believes the win over Wigan, who memorably beat the Premier League champions-elect Manchester City in the previous round, can build confidence.

“That’s what it’s about, just getting a win and taking confidence from that. We can take progressing in the competition into the league.”

The left-back will now join England for their upcoming friendlies against Holland and Italy, with a relegation clash with West Ham to follow when he returns to club duty.

“It’s definitely a massive game,” he said.

“It’s something you might as well look forward to. There is no other way. You go there and relish the opportunity because if you come out of there with a result it leaves you in very good stead.”
