West Brom 1-2 Southampton: Saints book quarter-final place

Show/hide article…

Saints booked a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over West Brom.

A bad week off the pitch for West Brom got worse on it, but there were few complaints from Saints who made the last eight for the first time since 2004/05.

Boardroom upheaval and hijinx in Spain provided an unwanted distraction ahead of Saturday’s fifth round tie, but the FA Cup had provided West Brom with some salvation this season.

Perhaps a siege mentality could conjure up another much-needed win like the one at Exeter at the start of January? Or the only outstanding performance of the campaign at Anfield against Liverpool last month?

It was not to be. Goals at the beginning of each half from Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic saw Southampton progress to the quarter-finals, despite a superb reply from Salomon Rondon making the final score 2-1.

West Brom’s week began with the sacking of chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman on Tuesday.

That was followed by the club, who are bottom of the Premier League and under threat from relegation, finding itself front and back page news heading into Saturday’s match after allegations that senior players Jonny Evans, Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and Boaz Myhill had stolen a taxi during the training camp in Barcelona this week.

Two of the dubbed “taxi four” started against Southampton, with Evans and Barry named in the team, although Evans appeared to have been stripped of the captaincy as Gareth McAuley skippered the side. Back-up goalkeeper Myhill was on the bench but Livermore was out injured.

Evans and Barry both had their names booed by a small section of the home support as the teams were announced just before kick-off. Things did not improve for Evans as West Brom made the worst possible start, falling behind after 11 minutes.

The defender was one of two Albion players to be dragged beneath the ball to the front post at a James Ward-Prowse corner, leaving Hoedt unmarked to volley the ball past Ben Foster from 10 yards out.

It was a huge setback and Southampton assumed total control, without ever really threatening to add to their lead during the first half.

West Brom’s best effort before the break was a 25-yard strike from James McClean which whistled wide.

It got even worse for the hosts when Tadic rounded off a sweeping counter attack by flicking the ball over Foster to double Southampton’s lead after 56 minutes.

Cue more booing from some home fans. However, the mood was soon lifted when Rondon crashed home a volley from the left side of the penalty area from Grzegorz Krychowiak’s ball over the top two minutes later.

It finally sprung West Brom into life and McClean and Matty Phillips both threatened as Alan Pardew’s team pushed for a quick equaliser.

Southampton survived another wave of West Brom attacks with 10 minutes remaining. Ahmed Hegazi hooked an effort against the crossbar following a set-piece and after Saints struggled to clear the ball, Rondon saw a shot headed off the line by Redmond.

Foster kept his team in it by denying Ward-Prowse at the beginning of four minutes of injury time but West Brom were unable to force another goal at the death for a replay.

West Brom 1-2 Southampton: Saints must use use Cup joy to move forward

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is delighted Saints have made it into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 13 years – but has told his players to forget about it for now.

Saints secured a morale boosting place in the last eight courtesy of a 2-1 win against Premier League relegation rivals West Brom at The Hawthorns.

It leaves them just a win away from a Wembley semi-final, but though Pellegrino is pleased with the confidence shot victory gives his team, he wants to immediately focus back on the battle for top flight survival.

“Like every single weekend we have to improve and draw some conclusions about the positive and negative things,” said Pellegrino.

“We have to work this week because every single game from now will be more important.

“I think it’s important for many reasons.

“The first one is the belief of the team improves and in our way sometimes you can have a good game, a bad game, but the spirit of the team was really good.

“It was something we were talking about last week and even in difficult situations like at the end we were there competing well with good concentration, we were focussed.

“I think when you play against this side in physical battle they are really strong and try to put the opponent under pressure all the time and we didn’t concede in set plays and that is important.

“Also we give the opportunity to other players that didn’t play too much in the last couple of months and we move to the next round which is the most important.”

He added: “I think it helps everybody to increase our confidence, our spirit when you are in a difficult situation. We have many important games the next hundred days until the end and for us it’s really important when we can recover some players like Nathan and everybody is ready to help the club.”

While many Premier League managers have questioned the importance of the Cup, particularly when battling relegation, Pellegrino sees no reason it isn’t anything other than hugely positive for Saints.

“It depends how do you see this possibility?

“For us it’s important to move to the next round because it helps the club, the players, the manager, our supporters and everybody is happy.

“Obviously the difficult thing is when you have got two important games in three or four days but this is another question.

“When you have two games in three or four days like Champions League teams do and this is the main question.

“When you have got plenty of time there doesn’t exist any reason to be unhappy.”

Saints could face Man City in FA Cup quarter-finals

Show/hide article…

Saints have been drawn away to Wigan or Premier League leaders Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The sides meet in their fifth round tie on Monday night.

City are massive favourites to get through that match and would also be a huge test for Saints, albeit Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were only beaten by a late goal in their Premier League visit to the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season.

The game will be played between March 16-19, meaning Saints’ trip to Swansea will have to be rearranged.

Pellegrino rues his unluckiest day

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping there isn’t serious damage to his squad after the unluckiest day he has seen in his managerial career.

Saints were engaging in their usual light training session at Staplewood on Friday before they travelled to West Brom for their FA Cup tie.

But the usually serene session had a nasty twist as Saints lost a remarkable three players to injury.

Steven Davis, Sofiane Boufal and Maya Yoshida all joined Shane Long and Charlie Austin on the sidelines.

Saints are optimistic that the injury to Bofual is not serious while Yoshida requires a scan after twisting his knee in a challenge with Guido Carrillo, but is thought unlikely to be sidelined for long.

Davis could be out for longer but Saints are waiting to find out.

Pellegrino said: “It was an unlucky day before travelling with Maya, Davo, Sofiane, then Shane plus Charlie.

“I have never ever seen something like that in one day with three players.

“It’s part of our job and now we have to wait until next week for what the doctor says.

“Maybe a couple of players will come back I imagine but the other maybe a little bit longer.”

It didn’t prevent Saints from making it through to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.

Two wins in as many weeks away at West Brom also boosted the confidence of the side ahead of a crucial run of matches where Saints take on many of the teams around them, mostly away from home, in the coming weeks.

“I don’t know, it depends on the efficiency,” replied Pellegrino when asked whether the West Brom wins would help.

“The other day against Liverpool at half time we didn’t deserve to be 2-0 but football is about to have efficiency and not deserve.

“The most important for us is to believe in our job and our way for the next 11 games and for the next round.”

Saints dominated the first half against West Brom but the second was slightly more even.

However, Pellegrino was less concerned by the manner of victory and more that it happened.

“It’s not to deserve, it’s about efficiency,” he reflected.

“When you lose and you say we deserve like the first half against Liverpool I don’t want to talk about it like an excuse.

“When you win today we create problems. First half we play a bit better, second half we were always dangerous in counter attack.

“Now we are in the next round.”

Man City to face Southampton in FA Cup quarter-finals if they beat Wigan

Show/hide article…

Manchester City will face Southampton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup should they progress beyond the fifth round this weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side face Wigan Atheltic at the DW Stadium on Monday night, and will be looking to keep their quadruple hopes alive with a positive result.

City came through a bruising encounter in the last round to book their place in the fifth round after beating Cardiff City 2-0 At the Cardiff City Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne scored a typically genius free-kick, something that City fans have been treated to all too regularly in opposing fans opinion, and Raheem Sterling continued his fine scoring form this season with a second just before half-time.

Leroy Sane was on the wrong end of a shocking looking challenge from Cardiff’s Joe Bennett, who should really have seen red for the tackle. You could however say justice may have been done when Bennett was given his arching orders for a second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of the match.

Sane had been injured since the game, but made his comeback playing half-an-hour in City’s Champions League victory at Basel in midweek.

The German winger returned five weeks earlier than first feared, which will be a huge boost for Pep Guardiola, with his side still in contention to win the quadruple at the end of the season.
