FA Cup live scores and fifth round updates - follow the latest here

Show/hide article…

A place in the FA Cup quarter finals is at stake as the road to Wembley continues.

Carlos Carvalhal’s Swansea were held by his former club Sheffield Wednesday as the day’s opening tie end goalless.

The Championship club have struggled since the Portuguese coach departed at the end of last year, while the Swans form has picked up in the Premier League.

But neither could be separated after 90 minutes and a replay at the Liberty Stadium awaits.

Elsewhere, Brighton host Coventry at the AMEX Stadium (3pm kick-off) looking to join Chelsea and Leicester in the hat for the last eight of the competition.

West Brom, meanwhile, will be hoping to provide some positivity for their suffering fans after a week to forget.

Both the chairman and chief executive were sacked earlier this week before news broke of alleged taxi theft involving four first-team players during the club’s winter break to Barcelona.

The Baggies, bottom of the Premier League, take on Southampton at the Hawthorns at 3pm.

Later this evening, Huddersfield entertain Manchester United in the 5.30pm evening kick-off before the draw for the quarter-finals takes place.

United, however, will be without midfielder Paul Pogba who is sidelined with illness.

And you can keep track of all the goals from around the grounds as the FA Cup fifth round drama unfolds, right here.

West Bromwich Albion and Southampton’s Premier League seasons are turning into a nightmare but both have a chance to seal progression to the FA Cup quarter-finals at The Hawthorns.

The duo sit in the top flight relegation zone but could take a step closer to Wembley, with the Baggies also keen to avenge their 3-2 defeat at the same ground earlier in the month.

Elsewhere, Brighton are also in action as they take on Coventry City, with the League Two outfit aiming to cause an upset at the AMEX Stadium. Follow all the action here.

West Brom 1 Southampton 2: Hoedt and Tadic sends Saints into FA Cup quarter-finals

Show/hide article…

Boardroom upheaval and hijinx in Spain provided an unwanted distraction ahead of Saturday’s fifth round tie, but the FA Cup had provided West Brom with some salvation this season.

Perhaps a siege mentality could conjure up another much-needed win like the one at Exeter at the start of January? Or the only outstanding performance of the campaign at Anfield against Liverpool last month?

It was not to be. Goals at the beginning of each half from Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic saw Southampton progress to the quarter-finals, despite a superb reply from Salomon Rondon making the final score 2-1.

West Brom’s week began with the sacking of chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman on Tuesday.

That was followed by the club, who are bottom of the Premier League and under threat from relegation, finding itself front and back page news heading into Saturday’s match after allegations that senior players Jonny Evans, Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and Boaz Myhill had stolen a taxi during the training camp in Barcelona this week.

Two of the dubbed “taxi four” started against Southampton, with Evans and Barry named in the team, although Evans appeared to have been stripped of the captaincy as Gareth McAuley skippered the side. Back-up goalkeeper Myhill was on the bench but Livermore was out injured.

West Bromwich Albion news: Gareth Barry and Jonny Evans to start against Southampton after apologising for taxi incident

Show/hide article…

Gareth Barry and Jonny Evans have been named in West Brom’s starting line-up for Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round clash against Southampton, despite their involvement in the ‘taxi-gate’ incident in Barcelona this week.

Evans and Barry - along with Boaz Myhill and Jake Livermore - came forward on Friday to apologise and take responsibility for breaking a team curfew on a club trip to Spain, following claims that they stole a taxi outside a fast-food restaurant in Barcelona on Thursday.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported the quartet had food at a McDonald’s before leaving at 5.30am on Thursday morning and taking the taxi in which they had travelled to find food, driving it to their hotel. The newspaper said the players gave a statement to police but were not arrested.

The quartet issued a statement of apology on Friday, identifying themselves as being the players whose behaviour in Spain led to their club promising disciplinary action.

There was speculation over whether any of the players would be available to play on Saturday, but both Evans and Barry started the game.

Myhill was named on the bench, while Livermore was absent. Evans has captained West Brom this season but the club’s Twitter feed listed Gareth McAuley as wearing the armband.

In a joint statement posted on the club’s official website, the players apologised for breaking a curfew.

They said via the website: “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to our team-mates, the Head Coach, the Club and especially the supporters for the events which have been the subject of widespread and negative publicity.

“We felt it important we identify ourselves as the players involved in an incident which occurred during the training camp in Spain this week out of respect for team-mates who otherwise could be implicated by association.

“We freely acknowledge and apologise for the break of curfew which we accept represented a breach of the standards of professionalism required of us as representatives of West Bromwich Albion FC.

“The Club has informed us that it will now conduct its own inquiry into the incident and we will co-operate fully.

“In the meantime, we would like to assure our supporters that this incident does not reflect the determination and resolve we possess to do all we can to recover a difficult season.”

The Baggies are seven points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League and are in crisis.

As well as the taxi incident, star striker Jay Rodriguez is currently yet to respond to a Football Association charge for allegedly using racist language towards Brighton defender Gaetan Bong.

And off the pitch, chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman were recently axed in a shock move by the club’s new owners - READ MORE HERE.
