Saints enter ‘season-defining’ period

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu believes the impending run of Premier League matches will decide if Saints avoid relegation or not.

The ‘season-defining’ stretch begins this Saturday at Burnley, before Stoke visit St Mary’s next week and Saints travel to Newcastle and West Ham in March.

The stint also included a trip to Swansea, but that match will now be rearranged for a later date after Saints progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Nonetheless, Mauricio Pellegrino’s 18th-placed side enter a meaningful period of winnable games knowing if they don’t succeed the dreaded drop to the Championship is a likelihood.

“We put ourselves here and these games will define the season,” said Romeu. “They will give us a chance to stay up. We must put the chances away.

“It’s a battle because they’re six-pointer games because we can make up the gap on them or the other way around.

“Now it comes and sometimes it’s better to have it like this than playing against the top six after each other.

“The battles will be there and we have to react and focus because we haven’t done it yet.

“I don’t remember having two wins in a row in the league.”

In the final run-in to the end of the season through April and into May, Saints face top-six outfits Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, so this approaching stint against their direct rivals for survival is a big opportunity.

While still riding high in 7th place and certainly not in relegation danger, this Saturday’s opponents Burnley have not won in ten Premier League games.

Romeu is aware they’re in a bad moment, but the 26-year-old has urged Saints not to underestimate the Clarets.

He said: “It will be a battle. It will be a hard game. We know how they play and know what they do well.

“They will do everything they can because they’re not feeling enough at the moment and will be looking for a reaction.

“We cannot play around and not make any silly mistakes. This is a game to win and not to play. We will take 2-1 in the last minute.

“We know it’s not important to play amazing football now.

“We have to win games and that will give us in the next two or three games more space and freedom to play but it will be massive.”

Every top flight club’s greatest ever No.1 in the Premier League era - revealed

Show/hide article…

De Gea, the Spain goalkeeper, made eight saves in United’s Champions League round-of-16 draw at Sevilla, which places the Red Devils in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier cup competition.

On so many occasions De Gea has been United’s hero since he arrived at Old Trafford in 2011 and inherited the No.1 shirt that has been worn by other club heroes such as Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel.

But who is every top flight club’s greatest No.1 in the Premier League era? This is not their greatest goalkeeper, but the best players to have worn the No.1 shirt, since the Premier League era started in August 1992.

Boufal could return at Burnley

Show/hide article…

The Moroccan missed the Emirates FA Cup win at West Brom last weekend with injury, but is back in training with his teammates ahead of the Premier League trip to Turf Moor.

Maya Yoshida, however, will be sidelined for “four or five weeks as a minimum” according to the boss.

Charlie Austin is still not fit to return, while Shane Long and Steven Davis are unlikely to feature at Burnley, but the pair could be in contention for next week’s home game against Stoke.

“This is part of our job,” said Pellegrino. “When you have a squad of 22, 23, 24 players, you need them to be ready when you have something unexpected, like injured players.”

Inside Track: Burnley

Show/hide article…

How would you assess Burnley’s season so far?

Although there’s been a recent blip you’d have to say it’s been very good, it’s difficult to have too many complaints when Burnley are seventh in the Premier League with 11 games to go. Until mid-December it was shaping up to be an incredible season. The wins were flowing home and away, with some memorable results on the road, but since going fourth, albeit briefly, on December 12, the club haven’t won since.

That they remain seventh shows partly how well they were doing in the first half of the season and also the inconsistencies of the chasing pack. If they can end that winless run soon and still finish comfortably in the top half then it will be a great season.

After enduring a winless run, what is the mood around the club and what have the performances been like since the side’s met at St Mary’s?

I think the mood remains good, despite not winning in 11 games. There have been plenty of injuries of late, with Sean Dyche describing it as the biggest injury crisis in his time at the club. That has robbed him of some key players and it’s shown in performances. There have been highs in this run without a win, with the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford and the 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City, but there has been some disappointing performances as well, including last time out at Swansea.

Who have the key men been for the Clarets of late?

Probably the wingers. Aaron Lennon has looked bright in his Burnley career so far after joining in January while Johann Berg Gudmundsson is having a very good season.

The Icelander has taken over from Robbie Brady as chief creator since his season-ending injury and he’s starting to add a couple more goals into his game as well.

The loss of Brady and Steven Defour for the season has certainly hit Burnley hard and Dyche will be desperate to get Chris Wood back in attack as well, with the striker in with a chance of returning this weekend.

What sort of game are you expecting?

Almost certainly a tight one. Turf Moor has witnessed just 19 goals in 13 games this season and I can’t see there being many on Saturday. Scoring goals has been an issue for the Clarets but they will be confident of keeping a clean sheet so if they can find one that might be enough.

Southampton face

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Southampton’s upcoming run of matches is an “amazing challenge” as they battle to improve their hopes of maintaining their Premier League status.

The Saints travel to Turf Moor on Saturday to face Burnley before hosting fellow strugglers Stoke and a visit to St James’ Park to face Newcastle in a series of fixtures which could prove make or break and Pellegrino has called on his squad to maintain their focus.

Southampton, who have picked up only one league win from their past 14 fixtures, sit in the relegation zone but only five points away from Bournemouth in 10th with 11 games remaining in the campaign.

When asked whether he was excited by the period of matches ahead, Pellegrino said: "It is an amazing challenge for us.

“It is an amazing opportunity in all different aspects but we have to think about one week at a time. Now we have to be fully focused on this game [Burnley] and after we will see.”

Pellegrino led his side to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over West Brom last Saturday and the Argentinian manager is determined to transfer the momentum into their league encounters and expects a stern test against Sean Dyche’s out of form side.

“Yes - for sure. Of course. Every victory helps us to believe in our model and way [of playing],” Pellegrino said.

"It was important for us to move forward but every single game you have to be fully focused and really well prepared to keep going in a positive way.

"Burnley, obviously, in some aspects they are similar but other parts they are really strong and different. It is a really difficult team at home.

“Every single game is really tight when you play a team that is really organised. They are a really competitive team.”

Burnley are without a victory in 11 matches in all competitions but Pellegrino doesn’t expect the Clarets, who won the reverse fixture, to deviate from their style of play which proved so successful in the opening part of the season - where they reached as high as fourth in December.

Pellegrino said: "I expect a really tight game. They will not change too much their style, trying to compete right until the end, and we try and play our style on the pitch and try to attack, manage the game and dominate.

“The key will be which team is the stronger mentally, don’t make too many mistakes and are clinical in the small situations [available].”

When asked whether he had a points target for his Southampton side in their battle against the drop Pellegrino preferred to focus his attentions on the weekend’s fixture.

“We have to be 100 per cent [focused] on this game,” Pellegrino said. “I don’t like to give numbers right now when we have got an important game in front of us. It is easier to give numbers but it is really difficult to translate this to the pitch.”

Southampton’s Yoshida faces up to five weeks out with knee injury

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton defender Maya Yoshida could be sidelined for up to five weeks with a knee injury, manager Mauricio Pellegrino said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game at Burnley.

Japan international Yoshida pulled up injured in training a day before their FA Cup fifth round victory over West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

Apart from the Burnley game, he is also set to miss matches against Stoke City, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Arsenal and Chelsea in the home stretch of a difficult season for 18th-placed Southampton.

“Maya will be out for a minimum of four to five weeks,” Pellegrino told a news conference on Thursday.

“Last week I said that everybody is OK and then in the last training session three or four players out,” added Pellegrino, who also lost midfielders Steven Davis and Sofiane Boufal ahead of the West Brom game due to injuries.

”Football has this unpredictable moment and you cannot control this but hopefully in the next few weeks everybody will be alright.

“Maybe Sofiane will be involved in the team (against Burnley), but Long and Davis will have to wait another week,” the Argentine added.

Southampton have one victory in their last 14 league games and come into Saturday’s clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool. Seventh-placed Burnley are also in the middle of a poor run with no wins in 10 league games.
