THE VERDICT: Cup delivers for Saints bosses

Show/hide article…

Any Premier League managers doubting the value of domestic cup competitions should look no further than Saints.

You could argue that the EFL Cup kept Claude Puel in a job last season.

He often seemed beleaguered and lacking in support from the fans, even some of the squad at times, and yet, no matter whether league form was drifting and style of play was criticised, a Cup run came to his rescue.

If you are outside of the Champions League contenders then it really does mean a lot, and there was no way Saints would axe a manager mid-season who was guiding then to Wembley.

It didn’t quite prove enough to save him in the summer, but it might have done.

This season it’s Mauricio Pellegrino whose tenure is being boosted by the FA Cup.

Saints haven’t made a quarter-final in the competition since they were relegated in 2004/05, though probably best to whisper that parallel, along with the fact they drew a Manchester club in the last eight who they also faced at home on the final day.

In a season where Pellegrino and his team have struggled desperately to win matches, with only five in 27 attempts in the Premier League, the FA Cup seems a salvation.

Three victories in the competition since the start of the year are not to be sniffed at if you are struggling to win any kind of match.

Wins breed confidence and belief, regardless of competition.

And in terms of job security, every step nearer to Wembley is another reason for you to remain in the hotseat.

Given the timing of the latest win to book a last eight spot, surely it is time to stop talking about Pellegrino’s future for a few months.

No doubt the topic will be revisited in the summer, but with league games remaining about to tick into single figures, and the Cup on the books as well, he has got to be here for the rest of the season.

Pellegrino’s team are improving too. They are showing greater intent, and though they aren’t playing at full gas still, they do look like they are increasingly understanding what they are about.

The Saints boss must only wish he could play West Brom every week.

Three of their eight wins this season have been against the Baggies. Six points and an FA Cup quarter-final spot is a fine yield.

Wesley Hoedt got Saints off to a great start with a goal after just 11 minutes.

It was a good finish but embarrassingly easy for the big centre half.

James Ward-Prowse hit an outswinging right footed corner into the middle and there was Hoedt arriving totally unmarked to side foot home a neat volley into the bottom corner.

The remainder of the half was a bit of a non-event.

Saints were comfortably the better side, working the play well and controlling the midfield battle.

West Brom looked like a team who are getting cut adrift at the bottom of the table, and their much more direct approach to play Jay Rodriguez into the channels and turning the Saints backline or going straight to Salomon Rondon was easily defended.

Their chances really were only half chances as Craig Dawson stretched for a header and put it over and James McClean hit a shot from distance just wide.

For Saints, despite their relative comfort, there wasn’t too much doing in the final third either with just one fairly routine clearance as Foster was almost beaten.

The second period was more even.

Alex McCarthy had to make a few good saves in quick succession as the pressure increased on Saints and it seemed like it become a very difficult afternoon all of a sudden.

The good thing for Saints in the context of their season might just be that coming up they play so many of the teams around them away from home, where their natural counter attacking game seems well suited.

It was proof in point as they relieved the pressure with a goal on the break on 56 minutes.

Guido Carrillo did well to recover the ball and hook it over to Dusan Tadic.

The Serbian brought it under control and then produced a sublime lofted finish over Foster.

It seemed as if Saints had weathered the storm and done enough – but just a couple of minutes later their lead was back to one again.

A direct ball picked out Rondon whose stunning first time volley rocketed in at the near post, giving McCarthy no chance.

Saints did well to see the game out as West Brom, with nothing to lose and surprisingly loud home support given the state they are in, bottom of the table and after their Spanish taxi indecent, predictably threw the ball forward at every opportunity.

They did worry Saints with nine minutes remaining as Ahmed Hegazi’s duffed acrobatic free kick looped up and hit the crossbar.

The rebound found its way to Rondon whose shot fired straight down into the turf and skipped up towards the opposite top corner, only for Ryan Bertrand to get it away off the line.

But far from a tense ending Saints played out time professionally. Indeed, they almost scored themselves, Josh Sims with a blistering break down the right leaving Jonny Evans in his wake and squaring to Ward-Prowse, whose shot beat Foster but was blocked by the covering Gareth McAuley.

The magic of the cup continues to deliver for Saints managers.

Every Premier League club’s current points total compared to same stage of 2016/17 season

Show/hide article…

We are 27 games into the Premier League season and the table has taken shape.

Manchester City are running away with the title, five teams are fighting for just three Champions League qualification spots, and a number of sides are hoping to stay clear of relegation.

This is relatively similar to how the Premier League shaped up last term, with Chelsea dominant league leaders and almost half the table wary of finishing in the bottom three places.

But how does every team shape up to how they performed last season? Click the right arrow, above, to see every top flight side’s current points total compared with their points total after 27 games of the 2016/17 campaign.

*Only featuring the 17 teams who have played in both 2016-17 and 2017-18 Premier League campaigns. Points totals for both seasons taken after 27 matches played.

Jaïdi previews Newcastle trip

Show/hide article…

Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi has said that the victory over Watford last week has set the bar for his youngsters, and he expects the same level of performance as attention turns back to Premier League 2 this evening.

Jaïdi’s side have triumphed over Stoke and West Brom in their most recent league clashes, while also recording a 2-0 success in last week’s Premier League Cup tie at Watford, but the former Saints defender knows that an away trip to Newcastle presents a different physical challenge.

Having started the move up the PL2 table, with back-to-back wins, Jaïdi is especially keen for that forward momentum to be continued.

“It is a long trip, but we can’t wait to be back performing in the league,” he said.

"The boys are all aware of the importance of our next set of games, as we hit a crucial time in our season. The run of games come thick and fast in the next couple of weeks.

"Things change with the varied teams we play. Newcastle are a good footballing side, an attacking team, and I’m expecting a challenging game against technical individuals.

“We’ll look to continue this good run, and we’re taking a strong side to Newcastle - with some younger boys also included - so it’ll be a good test.”

Sanchez and Lukaku show promise together - 10 THINGS WE LEARNED

Show/hide article…

The fifth round of the FA Cup saw few shocks, though Rochdale secured a replay with Tottenham after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

Manchester United and Chelsea eased through to the quarter-finals, along with Leicester, Southampton and Brighton.

Here Sportsmail look back at the biggest talking points from the weekend’s action…

  1. It’s early days but there are the beginnings of a partnership between Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku which would be great news for Manchester United.

It was a Sanchez pass which opened up Huddersfield’s defence for Lukaku to score his and the team’s second goal in the 2-0 FA Cup win.

That was one of eight occasions when the Chilean, asked by Jose Mourinho to play further forward in the second half to support Lukaku, picked out the centre-forward – more often than any other United player.

  1. The ankle injury that Harry Winks suffered in early January could have far reaching consequences for the 22-year-old’s hopes of making it into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

The Tottenham midfielder looked a certainty after his superb debut in Lithuania in the final qualifying game back in October and as he continued to be a regular starter for Mauricio Pochettino.

But he’s struggling to recover his form at the moment, giving the ball away 10 times in a distinctly average performance before getting subbed with half an hour of the 2-2 draw at Rochdale still to go.

  1. Danny Drinkwater must be hugely frustrated that Antonio Conte won’t give him any part in Chelsea’s Premier League or Champions League campaigns.

The former Leicester midfielder gave an excellent performance in the 4-0 Cup demolition of Hull but it’s unlikely to get him anywhere near the line-up to start against Barcelona this week.

Drinkwater, who hasn’t appeared in the Prem since a 19-minute cameo off the bench against Arsenal on January 3, made more accurate forward-half passes (45) than any other Chelsea player.

  1. Curious that Kasper Schmeichel, rested from all of Leicester’s seven previous cup matches this season, started the 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Ben Hamer, the club’s normal ‘cup keeper’ was on the bench as Jamie Vardy’s goal took Claude Puel’s team into the quarter-finals.

Suggestion is that the 31-year-old, who had a nightmare in his previous Premier League game at Manchester City, asked to play to rebuild his confidence.

  1. If Swansea are going to be without key defender Alfie Mawson for a while they at least have good cover in Kyle Bartley.

The 26-year-old, a huge hit at Leeds on loan last season, shone in the 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday after Mawson’s knee locked during the warm-up.

He won every one of eight aerial duels, made the most clearances (10), and for good measure was decent on the ball – only Mike van der Hoorn (70) played more passes than his 64.

  1. Biggest disappointment for Brighton this season has been that Anthony Knockaert, who scored 15 goals in the club’s promotion run, has struggled to hit the target in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has only two to his name so far and all three of his efforts in what might have been a chance to rebuild his confidence against Coventry were off target.

At least he’s still contributing, though, making one of Brighton’s goals in the 3-1 win and setting up three other chances.

  1. Nathan Redmond will be hoping he’s changed the mind of Southampton manager Manuel Pellegrino after a miserable second half of the season.

Redmond’s return to the starting side in place of Oriel Romeu was the only change the Saints boss made at West Brom and it paid off as a more attacking look helped earn the 2-1 win.

The 23-year-old hadn’t started a match of any sort since Boxing Day when he was subbed after an hour of the 5-2 defeat by Spurs.

  1. Chelsea’s academy history is littered with stories of players who never got a kick in the first team at Stamford Bridge but went on to make a career elsewhere.

The latest on the list is Millwall’s midfielder George Saville who was excellent in the 1-0 win at Birmingham that lifted last season’s League One play-off winners to 14th in the Championship.

Now aged 24, Saville had a tough time at Wolves when he left Chelsea but has blossomed as he’s played all but 13 minutes of the Lions’ 32 league games this season, scoring seven goals in the process.

  1. Rotherham took a brave decision in sticking with club stalwart Paul Warne as their boss after he failed to save them from relegation last season, and then again when they started this one slowly, but their faith in him is paying off.

The 44-year-old, who played more than 260 games for the club in two spells, has got the Millers on a roll and they could yet snatch a League One automatic promotion spot.

Skipper Richard Wood’s goal for a 1-0 win at leaders Shrewsbury made it 33 points out of 39 in a 13-game unbeaten run.

  1. Evergreen Adebayo Akinfenwa has overtaken Harry Kane in the list of strikers with most league goals and assists combined out of the 92 Premier and EFL clubs.

The 36-year-old got into ‘Beast Mode’ scoring once and setting up the other as Wycombe won 2-0 at Cheltenham.

It took him to 25 goals and assists for the season, one ahead of Kane – although still trailing Sergio Aguero (26), Accrington’s Billy Kee (27) and Liverpool’s Mo Salah (29).

Loan Watch: Another win for Targett’s Fulham

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Matt Targett continued his positive run in the Fulham side on Saturday as the Cottagers consolidated their place in the play-offs with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Full-back Targett – making his third consecutive start for the club – played the duration at Craven Cottage as Fulham extended their home winning run to seven matches against Steve Bruce’s side.

After a tight first half, it took just seven minutes for Ryan Sessegnon to sweep the hosts in front after the interval, his 12th strike of the season.

Floyd Ayite made it 2-0, firing into an empty from inside the centre circle after controlling goalkeeper Sam Johnstone’s wayward free-kick.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Harrison Reed played 92 minutes of a dramatic East Anglian derby.

A Luke Chambers strike one minute from time looked to have sealed the points and local bragging rights for Ipswich only for Tim Klose to head home after five minutes of stoppage time.

Sam Gallagher meanwhile was unable to prevent Birmingham from avoiding defeat to Millwall at St Andrew’s.

The hosts had almost two-thirds of possession and 15 efforts on goal, but the division’s lowest scorers (22) landed their only shot on target in the third minute of stoppage time when Jordan Archer blocked Harlee Dean’s low effort.

Fred Onyedinma scored the game’s decisive goal on 77 minutes, netting on the rebound after his initial effort was saved by ‘keeper David Stockdale.

In League Two, Ryan Seager took his personal tally to five for the season in Yeovil Town’s 4-1 defeat to Stevenage.

Goals from Luke Amos, Jon Smith, Danny Newton and Ben Kennedy eased the hosts to victory before Seager netted a consolation strike late on, tapping home from close range.
