Crystal Palace vs Southampton live score and goal updates - latest

Show/hide article…

It has been a week a change at Selhurst Park. Out goes Frank de Boer (after 77 days in charge). In comes Roy Hodgson.

The former England boss, 70, returned to football to replace the doomed Dutchman at Crystal Palace on a two-year deal.

The Eagles have endured a dreadful start to the new season so far, failing to win a game and failing to even score a goal.

Will that change today against Southampton?

Sammy Lee leaves Palace ahead of game against former club Saints

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace have announced the departure of assistant manager Sammy Lee following the appointment of Roy Hodgson as the club’s new boss.

Lee - who worked at Saints under Ronald Koeman - was initially named assistant under Sam Allardyce in January before taking up the same role during Frank de Boer’s brief tenure at Selhurst Park.

The Dutchman was sacked after just 77 days in charge at Palace and replaced by former England boss Hodgson on Tuesday.

Lee, who has had two spells working on England’s coaching staff, has been replaced by Ray Lewington ahead of today’s game against Saints at Selhurst Park.

Orlando Trustfull, brought in by De Boer also as an assistant manager, and Ryland Morgans, who was head of performance, have also left the Premier League strugglers.

A statement on the club’s website read: “We would like to thank Orlando, Sammy and Ryland for their efforts during their time in south London, and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Palace have moved to beef up their backroom staff with the appointment of former Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid as a first-team coach.

The 36-year-old has worked on the Reading coaching staff for the past two years after joining them from Burnley following his retirement from playing.

Crystal Palace 0 Southampton 1: Roy Hodgson suffers defeat on Eagles debut

Show/hide article…

Roy Hodgson suffered defeat on his first game in charge of Crystal Palace

Hodgson’s side made a promising start but that didn’t last long as Steven Davis opened the scoring after just six minutes.

Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey pushed a cross back into middle of the box and Davis stroked it home.

Jason Puncheon forced Saints keeper Fraser Forster into a fine stop in the second half but it is now five games in a row without a goal for the pointless Eagles.

Southampton star Virgil van Dijk ‘embarrassed club’ in transfer row

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk ‘embarrassed himself, Southampton fans and the club’ in his summer-long transfer saga over a prospective move to Liverpool, says Alan Pardew.

The Holland international handed in a transfer request and trained alone throughout pre-season amid interest from Liverpool, who were forced to publicly end their pursuit of the him amid claims of tapping up.

Van Dijk was named as a substitute for the match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, the first time he has been involved with the first team since the transfer window closed.

‘Is it going to affect his performance today? I expect in three or four games time he will be fine. But this first game, I expect him to be nervous,’ former Crystal Palace and Southampton boss Pardew, a Sportsmail columnist, said on Sky Sports.

‘The player, he has embarrassed his fans and he has embarrassed himself a little bit and the club. I’ll be looking at him today and worrying. He is someone I’d be concerned about.’

Van Dijk’s Southampton team-mate Ryan Bertrand insisted there is no issue surrounding the Dutchman’s return to the senior fold.

‘No bad vibes in the dressing room,’ Bertrand said. 'Everyone is entitled to their opinions, options, what they want to do in life.

‘He wanted to go and pursue his career, move on to really big things. But he also had a contract with Southampton and they didn’t want to sell him. That’s football, that’s life, move on.’

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said Van Dijk could have started at Selhurst Park against Palace but he opted for Maya Yoshida and Wesly Hoedt due to their superior match sharpness.

‘Van Dijk is training well, this is the good news,’ Pellegrino said prior to kick-off. 'Obviously we know about the pre-season but Virgil is coming from eight months without playing a game (due to an ankle injury).

‘He is well, training at a good dynamic with the team. I think he is ready to play, physically he is good but he needs more time to be at the same level as his team-mates.’

Van Dijk came on in the 88th minute for Dusan Tadic as Southampton beat Palace 1-0.
