Cesc Fabregas is back in favour at Chelsea - 10 THINGS WE LEARNED

Show/hide article…

Five games into the Premier League, and the shape of the season to come is beginning to become clearer.

The two Manchester clubs continued to dominate with big wins, while a change of manager was not enough to arrest Crystal Palace’s abysmal start.

Here, Sportsmail’s Ralph Ellis shares 10 things he learned from the weekend’s action throughout the leagues.

  1. After a year of being a bit-part player, Cesc Fabregas is back to being among the first names that Antonio Conte writes on his team sheet.

The Spanish midfielder, now 30, has been the biggest beneficiary of Nemanja Matic’s exit. Last season he never made more than two Premier League starts in a row, but so far has missed only one of Chelsea’s seven games through suspension after collecting two yellow cards against Burnley.

Fabregas is benefiting from the regular action – he created four chances in the 0-0 draw against Arsenal, more than any other player.

  1. Daniel Sturridge is reaping the rewards for putting himself through his own ‘pre-pre-season’ when he spent his holidays working in the gym before reporting back with the rest of Liverpool’s players.

The injury-plagued 28-year-old believes he’s in his best shape in two years, and underlined that with his effort in the 1-1 draw with Burnley – his first 90 minute Premier League appearance since May 2016.

Sturridge didn’t manage a goal despite having seven attempts, but only midfielder James Milner ran more than his 6.6 miles while he was also among the top strikers this weekend for the number of sprints made (53).

  1. Ashley Young, who rejected overtures from Stoke in the summer, is fighting to convince Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to take up the year’s option on his current contract.

The 32-year-old, who’s existing deal worth around £120,000 a week runs out next year, grabbed the chance to play as a full back in the Champions League against Basle and did enough to keep his place in the 4-0 thumping of Everton.

Only Nemanja Matic (53) played more accurate passes in Everton’s half than Young’s 37, and the former Aston Villa winger also won the ball back 10 times.

  1. Worrying times for England’s Under 21 captain James Ward-Prowse who seems to be falling out of favour under new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

The current star product of the club’s academy, dragged off at half time during last week’s 2-0 home defeat by Watford, played only the final five minutes off the bench in the win at Crystal Palace.

After winning a regular place in the team under Claude Puel last season it was the third time he’s been left out of a Premier League starting line-up already this season, and he’s been taken off early in both his other appearances.

  1. Andy Carroll’s return to fitness hasn’t done much good for West Ham’s £16million summer recruit Javier Hernandez, who has had to move out to a wide role in both matches since the big striker got back in Slaven Bilic’s side.

Carroll playing again is clearly a big boost for West Ham who have changed their style of play to hit him quickly, a tactic that has helped bring four points in two games.

However while Hammers boss Bilic has said he believes the two can work well together, former Manchester United ace Hernandez touched the ball just once in the opposing penalty area in the 0-0 draw at West Brom.

  1. Renato Sanches isn’t afraid to get stuck into the hard side of the Premier League as he tries to rebuild his reputation during his loan at Swansea.

The brilliant Portugal international, who built his reputation before his £30m move to Bayern Munich for the range of his passing, got little opportunity to get on the ball during the 0-0 draw at Tottenham.

Still building his fitness he got subbed after 58 minutes – but in that time made more tackles (5) than any of his team-mates managed in the whole game, as well as fighting more duels (14) and winning the ball back most often (7).

  1. Republic of Ireland defender Ciaran Clark never quite established himself in the Premier League at Aston Villa despite playing more than 150 games in seven seasons after making his debut as a 19-year-old.

A year building confidence alongside Jamaal Lascelles seems to have done him the world of good though, and the pair have played a key role in Newcastle stringing together three consecutive wins.

Lascelles has had the headlines for scoring two winning goals, but Clark has been really solid – he made most clearances (9) in the 2-1 win over Stoke.

  1. Bristol City will be relieved to see record signing Famara Diedhiou beginning to get among the goals after paying £5.3m to sign the Senegal international in the summer.

The 24-year-old, bought from French club Angers, got a midweek penalty against Wolves to build up some confidence but then let midfielder Bobby Reid take a spot kick in the 4-1 win over Derby.

Diedhiou did get his name on the score sheet in the end, though, as he grabbed the final goal in the last minute.

  1. Kent-born striker Kwesi Appiah is benefiting from getting his future settled at AFC Wimbledon after being shunted on loan to eight different clubs during six years as a Crystal Palace player.

The 27-year-old, whose career began at non-League at Ebbsfleet, got his first goal for Neal Ardley’s side in the 1-0 win at Blackburn.

It’s a perfect time for Wimbledon to find some form – they face hated rivals MK Dons at home in a League One fixture this Friday night.

  1. Uche Ikpeazu was being monitored by all the top clubs as the then-teenager scored 28 goals in as many games for Reading’s academy team.

The Bedford-born striker moved on to Watford but lost his way before ending up on a short term contract at Cambridge where he got taken under the wing of boss Shaun Derry.

Now aged 22 he’s starting to blossom again and got the winner against Coventry that lifted Cambridge into the League Two play-off places.

Loan Watch: Seager nets for MK Dons

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngster stepped off the bench as a late second-half substitute with the game delicately poised after Gboly Ariyibi’s double had been cancelled out by strikes from Rochdale’s Brad Inman and Matthew Done.

Fifteen minutes later Ryan was celebrating the winner, firing into the top corner six minutes from time to set up a thrilling 3-2 win for the home side.

The young striker’s first goal of the campaign lifted the Dons up to 13th in League One.

Sam Gallagher meanwhile was unable to prevent Birmingham City from slipping to a sixth consecutive defeat as goals from Daniel Johnson, Jordan Hugill and Tom Barkhuizen saw Preston North End run out 3-1 winners at St.Andrews in what would prove to be Harry Redknapp’s last game in charge of the Blues.

Sam featured for 61 minutes for the hosts – narrowly heading wide from a set-piece in the first half – before being withdrawn for Isaac Vassell.

Harrison Reed was an unused substitute in Norwich City’s 1-0 success over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Looking further afield, Saints goalkeeper Harry Lewis enjoyed a quiet afternoon for Dundee United in the Scottish Championship, the youngster picking up a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Falkirk.

In Belgium, Jordy Clasie came off the bench after 81 minutes to make his first home appearance for league leaders Club Brugge who eased past KV Mechelen on Saturday night.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero tops ’ Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings this week.

Aguero smashed a hat-trick past Watford stopper Heurelho Gomes during City’s 6-0 goal fest on Saturday - taking his season tally to five goals from as many games.

Kevin De Bruyne also climbed to No 9 after claiming his third assist of the season, teeing up Aguero’s headed opener at Vicarage Road.

Team-mates Gabriel Jesus (No 2, up four places), Nicolas Otamendi (No 12, up 26 places) and Raheem Sterling (No.49, up 84 places) also got on the scoresheet.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku rose four places to grab the No 3 spot, netting his fifth goal of the season during a 4-0 against former club Everton on Sunday.

United captain Antonio Valencia (No 6, up 54 places) broke the deadlock within four minutes at Old Trafford, striking a long-range screamer past Jordan Pickford.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (No 8, up 16 places) also scored his first league goal of the season, having already notched a league-high five assists this term.

Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross slipped two places to No 4, despite assisting Solly March’s opener during a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Friday.

Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri (No 5, up 44 places) scored a customary spectacular goal to level the scores at Newcastle before Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles (No 7, up 21 places) headed a 68th-minute winner.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats. Only games from this season will be factored before matchday five.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

We need to bounce back, says Little

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters host Stoke at Staplewood Campus in the Premier League 2, and Little is keen to put right last week’s defeat away to Aston Villa.

“The atmosphere obviously wasn’t great after the Villa performance,” started the midfielder.

“But we need to bounce back now and get three points. The games are coming thick and fast, so that’s obviously a good thing because it gives us a chance to put things right.

“In the week we’ve spoken about the need to be more clinical in the final third and also needing to cut out some sloppy mistakes defensively, so we know what we need to do.”

Little also expressed the need for Saints to start to impose themselves physically on their opponents.

“We need to strengthen up as a team,” he continued.

“We need to learn to deal with the physical presence in this league now because it is very different to what we faced last year.

“A lot of teams are direct and look to play off the second ball and work hard, so we need to match that work rate and win those individual battles before we can play our football.”
