Romeu: A stronger effort

Show/hide article…

Saints were edged out 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, as they produced a battling performance a few days after being beaten 4-1 at home by Leicester City.

Romeu felt the response was a positive one, but the midfielder added that they must do more in the weeks ahead.

“The defeat in midweek was something that was unacceptable,” said Romeu to reporters, about the loss to the Foxes. “I think we played much better [at Chelsea], much stronger, and that’s what we need to do. We cannot allow ourselves to produce those kind of performances.”

Romeu added: "The belief will be always there. I think sometimes we’ve played well, but we didn’t get points, and sometimes that takes some confidence out of the team, but hopefully we can get a couple of wins and then that confidence will soon come back to the team – but we need to get those wins.

“I think games against bigger teams we are competing well, but games that we should not necessarily win, but at least compete better in, we are not getting points and that’s been our problem in the last month, and one we need to solve.”

Also speaking to reporters after the game, defender Wesley Hoedt added: "We have to stick together and, as fast as possible, we have to pick up some points because I think we have a really good squad.

“It’s easy to say but we have to start playing better and we’ve played 18 games already, so we cannot hide behind that anymore."

U23 Report: Reading 1-1 Saints

Show/hide article…

A dramatic last quarter saw Sam McQueen open the scoring from the penalty spot, before Armani Little was dismissed, and Ben House fired the hosts level minutes from the final whistle.

The visitors dominated proceedings from the off, and deservedly took the lead, but a chaotic final ten minutes culminated in a Reading equaliser, and a fatal blow for Saints’ chances of victory.

In a first half characterised by a lack of clear cut chances, Little could - and perhaps should - have edged Saints in front on the stroke of half time.

Jake Hesketh whipped a corner to the back post, where the midfielder’s late run was destined, but the pace on the delivery meant Little’s connection was ineffective.

Returning from an eight month lay-off, Josh Sims played his part in the first 45 minutes, and looks to have shaken off an injury that has kept him sidelined since the back end of last season.

The 20-year-old was a threat down the right wing, linking consistently well with Hesketh, and was the architect of a breakaway chance in the 30th minute.

Sims drove the ball with purpose down the right, eating up the yards, before spotting the run of a tireless Michael Obafemi, whose three goal contribution had helped Southampton’s Under-18s to FA Youth Cup victory just four days prior.

The striker couldn’t untangle his feet, as the chance flashed by, but it served as encouraging indication that Sims’ full return is forthcoming.

Matt Targett curled a free-kick a yard over the crossbar, but to no avail, while Reading’s House hit the woodwork from range, before a goalless first half came to a close.

McQueen had the visitors straight on the front foot as the second period commenced, standing up a looping delivery, aimed at substitute Tyreke Johnson.

The winger’s leap managed to control the lofted pass, but onrushing defender’s soon smothered the danger, before Callum Slattery rattled the post from a corner in the 55th minute.

Hesketh, the orchestrator of most attacking play, had his goalbound shot thwarted moments later, initiating a Reading break led by Ade Shokunbi. Some astute covering from Yan Valery dealt with the danger, as Saints continued to look defensively organised.

Growing in understanding as the game continued, Hesketh fed the ball in to the path of Obafemi in the 65th minute, working another opening. The frontman’s clever first touch fooled his opposition defender, engineering a change in direction, and giving Jonathan Afolabi the chance to shoot marginally wide.

The one way traffic was firmly dictated by the visitors and the deadlock was broken soon thereafter, courtesy of a confidently converted McQueen penalty. Afolabi was upended in the area, allowing the 22-year-old to fire Saints in to the lead.

But some late drama meant that a likely three points was soon reduced to one, as Little saw red and House levelled the scores in the 89th minute. The Royals’ target man had looked dangerous throughout, and when presented with a chance to shoot from 10-yards, duly found the bottom corner of Jack Rose’s net.

Sims makes long-awaited return

Show/hide article…

JOSH Sims returned from seven months out injured in Saints Under-23s’ 1-1 draw at Reading today.

The quick attacker made a great impression on the first team last season under Claude Puel, making 13 appearances in all competitions.

The 20-year-old’s debut included an assist for Charlie Austin’s winner 41 seconds in to the 1-0 victory over Everton at St Mary’s.

Sims also set-up Shane Long for the winning goal at Anfield in the League Cup final second-leg.

He was also handed an England Under-20s call up and helped the Young Lions to Four Nations Victory in March.

However, after an excellent spell, the exciting attacking’s development was stopped in its tracks following an injury.

It forced him out of England’s triumphant Under-20 World Cup team and meant he ended a breakthrough campaign on the sidelines.

But Sims returned for the under-23s, playing 45 minutes in the 1-1 draw.

Sam McQueen had opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 75 minute, slamming powerfully to the left of the goal after Jonathan Afolabi was fouled in the box.

Saints’ lead did not last long, however, as things fell apart for Saints late on. Armani Little was sent off, before Royals striker Ben House levelled the score.

The Saints man was under intense scrutiny during the summer transfer window, with Liverpool reportedly approaching the player, and the upcoming January window is set to bring more transfer talk.

However, Van Dijk has not quite hit the same heights for Southampton as he did last season, with Carragher taking a look at some of his recent mistakes during a game.

But Aston Villa centre-back Terry believes that he would still improve any side, with Manchester United, Arsenal Liverpool and Chelsea all being linked with a move for the Dutchman.

Antonio Conte urges rivals to compete with Man City to sign Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has urged Premier League clubs to do everything they can to beat Manchester City to the signing of Virgil van Dijk.

The Southampton centre back was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer and is expected to be wanted by several of the Premier League big boys again when the transfer window opens in January.

On Saturday, Van Dijk was dropped to the bench for Southampton’s clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and afterwards, Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he could leave in January.

And Conte has urged every club who wants to sign Van Dijk to do their best to make sure City don’t acquire his services and further extend the gap between them and the rest of the English top flight.

‘Every team, every club, must pay great attention,’ Conte said. ‘Because if a club like Manchester City takes all the best [players], it will be very difficult for us to fight. Not only in England but in Europe.’

The 26-year-old was eager to force a move away from the south coast in the summer after handing in a transfer request.

However, Southampton’s £70million asking price proved prohibitive, despite concrete interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and City.
