Conte calls on other top clubs to stop Man City stockpiling the best players

Show/hide article…

Chelsea will rival Manchester City’s interest in Virgil van Dijk — to try to stop Pep Guardiola demolishing the rest of the Premier League.

And the champions’ boss, Antonio Conte, has also urged the other top sides to take on runaway leaders City — who are 11 points clear after 18 games following Saturday’s 4-1 hammering of Tottenham 4-1 on Saturday — next month in the battle for Southampton’s £70million Dutch defender.

Liverpool are also in the hunt for Van Dijk, who has been linked with Arsenal too.

Conte said: “Every team, every club, must pay great attention.

“Because if a club like Manchester City takes all the best [players], it will be very difficult for us to fight. Not only in England but in Europe.”

Van Dijk was dropped by boss Mauricio Pellegrino for Saints’ 1-0 loss at Chelsea on Saturday, in the wake of their home midweek thumping by Leicester.

Asked afterwards about the centre-back, Conte defended City’s right to continue spending big, but insisted his own club and their title rivals must try to keep pace.

The Italian, whose men play Bournemouth in a Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, said: “If they can do this, it is right for them to do this. We must pay great respect.

“When you have this opportunity to go in the market to spend a lot of money, I think it is right to do this.

“You must obviously be very good to spend your money in this way — sometimes you can spend a lot of money in a bad way.

“You must be clever to understand the positions, the roles you have to improve. In this case you must be very good.”

Premier League hotlist: Mesut Ozil, Kevin De Bruyne and Wilfried Zaha

Show/hide article…

Who were the best Premier League players from the weekend games? We take a look at the man-of-the-match performances in our hotlist…

Fresh from his match-winning two assists against Watford, the Palace winger was a handful once again, driving his team forward at every opportunity. He made the finish for his goal look very easy, which is a sign of the confidence coursing through his veins.

Clinton Morrison in the Sky Sports studio, said: “He’s showing consistency, playing intelligent passes and is becoming Palace’s star man. The Palace fans love him, that’s all they talk about. The young kids want to be him. He’s delivering.”

With Newcastle putting in an improved defensive display, it needed a moment of brilliance to unpick the Magpies - and boy did Mesut Ozil deliver that. The Germany midfielder read the situation superbly to anticipate where the ball would drop and produced a similarly superb finish to fire the Gunners back to winning ways. On an afternoon where so many of his team-mates were ineffective, Ozil’s contribution was telling.

The Brighton goalkeeper had little to do in the first half, but his contribution after the break ensured the hosts left with a deserved point.

The Australia international improvised brilliantly to deny Scott Arfield twice, while his decision not to go down with Chris Wood approaching paid dividends when the Burnley striker looked to chip it over him.

The Spaniard has been outstanding for Chelsea this season and this was another eye-catching performance from the left wing-back. His winner was his fourth goal of the season, making him the joint-top scoring defender in the Premier League.

He could have had more, too. Alonso repeatedly got himself into dangerous positions and attempted six shots in total - twice as many as any other player on the pitch. He did not have too much to do defensively, but his attacking contribution was invaluable.

The only downside was the yellow card which will keep him out of next weekend’s meeting with Everton.

His first touch was greeted by a cacophony on boos at the bet365 Stadium, but a superb performance certainly silenced those angry Stoke fans on Saturday afternoon. It did appear that the Austria international would endure a frustrating afternoon in front of goal having missed several chances, but finally got his goal late in the day to seal victory for the Hammers.

A look at the average position shows Arnautovic playing much higher than any of his team-mates - he was a menace on his return to the Potters.

Huddersfield were excellent value for their three points in Hertfordshire and Mooy was at the heart of a courageous and creative display from a side that had gone eight away games without a goal.

The Australia international midfielder was involved in Elias Kachunga’s contentious opener before being in the right place to guide in his side’s second midway through the first half, but it was his overall display which made him stand out.

The travelling supporters sang his name at regular intervals throughout the match and he capped a fine individual performance by firing in his second from the penalty spot late on.

The Belgium dominated the game from all areas of the midfield and his goal was superb. Not only was it a near-total display of powerful, pacey attacking play but it was also timely, halting a Spurs resurgence in the second half. He is becoming a complete midfield player under Pep Guardiola.

Matic was United’s standout performer in an otherwise uninspiring display from the visitors. The Serb made vital interceptions to prevent West Brom, while he also carried the ball forward with intent on numerous occasions.

His ability to break beyond West Brom’s midfield paid dividends for both of United’s goals, while 105 touches in total - 32 more than any other player on the pitch (Ander Herrera, 73) - highlighted how integral he was to United’s hard-fought victory.

The former Arsenal man is getting better week on week under Jurgen Klopp. While Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah continue to grab the headlines, Oxlade-Chamberlain is regaining his full fitness and becoming an integral part of Klopp’s squad.

No player provided more key passes at the Vitality on Sunday, and he remained combative, going in for more duels than any other player. He still needs to play more games, but in this form, he will be hard to leave out.

Jaïdi previews Reading tie

Show/hide article…

Saints have slipped to ninth in the PL2 table, while today’s opponents lie in third, but a win for Jaïdi’s troops would see them climb up to a mid-table position entering the Christmas break.

A 4-0 win over Reading at St Mary’s in the league opener back in August should serve as an adequate confidence boost, while Southampton are likely to field an experienced XI in their final competitive tie of the calandar year.

“It is really important for the boys confidence to finish the year on a good note,” Jaïdi commented. “From our perspective as coaches, a good result will help everyone go back home to see their families feeling positive and allow us to reflect on the last period properly.”

He added: "I haven’t been particularly happy recently, in terms of performances, so we’ve been working on that all week in training. Especially focussing on reactions when we lose the ball.

"We’ve been slow in our transitions, and hunting down the ball, so we’ve worked on possession this week. The boys have responded well to that and hopefully that is transferred in to the game today.

"The table is still very tight, so a win either way will have an impact. We still think that we can compete at the highest level.

“We need to apply what is required, as always. During the game, we need to deal with the challenge. We always tend to start well and fade out, that’s where we need to improve our game management.”
