Pellegrino’s coaching staff confirmed

Show/hide article…

The duo have followed Saints’ new manager from his former club, Alavés, meaning Pellegrino’s staff has been finalised ahead of the start of the 2017/18 season.

Compagnucci, 48, from Argentina, becomes Assistant Manager to Pellegrino, with Tamarit, 35, from Spain, taking on the role of Assistant First Team Coach.

Additionally, Eric Black, who joined the club last summer, remains a key member of the set-up, as Senior First Team Coach.

Pellegrino’s backroom staff is completed by Dave Watson, the club’s Head of Goalkeeping, and Head of Sports Science/First Team Strength & Conditioning Coach Alek Gross.

Southampton can also confirm that Pascal Plancque, who was part of Claude Puel’s staff last season, has departed the club.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Pascal for his efforts, and we wish him the very best for the future.

Southampton eyeing up bargain move for Alaves centre back Zou Feddal

Show/hide article…

Southampton are weighing up a bargain move for Morocco international defender Zou Feddal.

The 6ft 3ins Alaves centre back has a buy-out clause set at just £2.6million and is attracting interest from Valencia and Real Betis.

Feddal played 33 games last season under now Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino and scored two goals.

He was a key performer in an impressive season for Alaves as they finished ninth in La Liga and lost in the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona.

Feddal has gained a strong reputation for being able to read the game well and intercept danger, an attribute that has also drawn attention from the likes of Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United and scouts at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The price for the left-sided defender makes him all the more attractive as clubs look to add quality within an inflated market.

Southampton still anticipate approaches for defender Virgil van Dijk despite saying the 26-year-old Liverpool target is not for sale.

The Holland international has yet to return to full contact training despite stepping up his recovery from a foot ligament injury.

Every current Premier League club ranked by their greatest homegrown player

Show/hide article…

Clubs take great pride in promoting the most talented of players from their academy.

Sadly it’s become a rarity in the modern game to see young players secure a place in the starting line-up of the first team, but there have been many outstanding academy graduates down the years.

Who, then, could be considered the greatest homegrown player in the Premier League?

talkSPORT.com has picked the best academy graduate for each current top flight club in England, in order of quality.

Scroll through the gallery above to find out who has been selected.

N.B. Only players who made their senior football debut during the Premier League era (1992/93 season onwards), having represented the same club at youth level, are included. The club cannot have paid any fee or compensation to sign them (for example, the compensation paid by Arsenal to Barcelona for Cesc Fabregas rules him out of consideration for this homegrown ranking).

The 15 funniest replies from Liverpool fans to Virgil van Dijk’s latest tweet

Show/hide article…

You might have noticed that Virgil van Dijk is still a Southampton player.

Liverpool’s ham-fisted attempts at signing the centre-back earlier in this transfer window caused the club a lot of embarrassment and a slap on the wrist, and Van Dijk is now in Austria with the Saints on the club’s pre-season tour.

But after his new boss Mauricio Pellegrino ruled the Dutchman out of Saturday afternoon’s clash with St Gallen, the 26-year-old took to Twitter to prove that he was pretty fit after all.

In what was his first social media post for over a month - that wistful look from out of the window of a private plane - Van Dijk was shown running and striking a ball, and that was enough to send Liverpool fans still desperate for him to sign for the Reds into overdrive.

And some of their replies were brilliant.

Pre-season friendlies: Crystal Palace win, Watford lose, John Terry’s Aston Villa beaten

Show/hide article…

Frank de Boer’s new Crystal Palace side kicked off their pre-season schedule with a 3-1 win at Maidstone United on a busy Saturday of warm-up games.

De Boer took his place in the dugout for the first time as Palace boss and watched Jordon Mutch score a first-half double for a young Eagles team.

Joe Piggott’s fine free-kick for the hosts meant the Premier League side had headed in at the break with a slender advantage but with 20 minutes remaining, substitute Jacob Berkeley made the scoreline more comfortable.

Another new Premier League boss, Mauricio Pellegrino, watched his Southampton side held 0-0 by St Gallen in Austria.

Virgil van Dijk was not yet deemed ready as he continues his comeback from an ankle injury but though Pellegrino freshened up his XI at half-time, forwards Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long among those introduced, Saints failed to find a breakthrough.

Saido Berahino finally scored his first Stoke goal as the Potters were beaten 4-2 by Ligue 1 champions Monaco in Switzerland.

The striker opened the scoring in the tenth minute, but Stoke were pegged back as Fabinho and Allan Saint Maximum put the French side 2-1 ahead but Mame Biram Diouf levelled matters before the break.

Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappe were introduced by Monaco for the second half, with the former netting the third and 18-year-old Mbappe having a hand in Kevin N’Doram fourth goal.

Marco Silva swapped relegated Hull for Watford this summer but his top-flight Hornets went down 3-2 at League One side AFC Wimbledon.

New signing Nathaniel Chalobah watched from the stands at Kingsmeadow as Silva’s side came from 2-0 down to level through Ben Watson and Steven Berghuis, only for Alfie Egan to score an 87-minute winner for the League One side.

Premier League champions Chelsea were also in friendly action on Saturday, welcoming Fulham to Cobham, with plenty of first-team players on the pitch as the Blues ran out as 8-2 winners.

Willian netted a first-half hat-trick with a double from Michy Batshuayi in the opening 45 minutes, while a Cesar Azpilicueta own goal was the only reply for Fulham.

But the defender netted in the right net during the second half, as did Kenedy and Loic Remy with Stefan Johansen netting the second Fulham goal of the game.

Elsewhere, former Chelsea skipper John Terry captained Aston Villa but suffered defeat on his first outing for his new side as Steve Bruce’s men lost 2-1 at Shrewsbury.

Henri Lansbury scored a late penalty but Zak Jules and Arthur Gnahoua’s goals gave the third-tier side victory.

Another Championship side, Sunderland, also suffered a pre-season defeat, going down 3-0 at St Johnstone.

New Black Cats signing James Vaughan missed a penalty on his first outing, as goals from Steven MacLean, David Wotherspoon (2) gave the Scottish Premiership side a convincing win.

QPR and Peterborough played four 30-minute quarters at the ABAX Stadium, where Jamie Mackie’s opener separated the sides until Junior Morais’ double (63, 72) changed the lead.

But youngsters Jack Robinson (85) and Ebere Eze (87) swung the match back in QPR’s favour and Charlie Owens (105) ensured Ian Holloway’s visitors won the marathon match 4-2.

Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham ended their tour of Austria with a 2-0 victory over Israeli side Hapeol Ironi Kiryat Shmona with a different Blues team fielded in each half.

Jacques Maghoma put the Sky Bet Championship side ahead in the 18th minute before Kerim Frei doubled Birmingham’s lead on the 60-minute mark.

The Blues ended with ten men though as Clayton Donaldson was shown a red card after a confrontation on the touchline, which ended in his dismissal just before the full-time whistle.

Pellegrino reflects on St Gallen stalemate

Show/hide article…

Southampton drew 0-0 with the Swiss side at the end of their opening training camp of the summer, as they hopped over the Austrian border for the match before heading back home.

Pellegrino effectively used two different sides for the game, switching things around for the second half, as plenty of players got a run out.

“It was a difficult game, because the pitch from the beginning was too dry from my point of view,” said the Saints boss.

"We couldn’t see too many things on a technical level, or on an attacking level, because we couldn’t give many passes to try to be more on the opponents’ end of the pitch, to try to create more attempts, or get into in wide areas that we were expecting from the beginning.

“In the second half, more or less it was the same dynamic. But it was a physically demanding game and, for us, as the first one, more or less I am happy for that.”

Pellegrino, who gave plenty of the club’s youngsters game time, said the game and the week was a positive experience for them.

“You know that we are working with a lot of young players who we are watching,” he said.

"I want to give the opportunity to everyone and, for that reason, we are mixing the young with the players with the more experience.

“We have a lot of work to do, but I have confidence that we will be much better in the next few weeks.”
