Lewis signs new deal and loaned to Dundee United

Show/hide article…

The 19-year-old put pen to paper on a contract with Saints that runs until 2020, ahead of linking up with the Scottish Championship side for the 2017/18 campaign.

Head of Goalkeeping Dave Watson said: “It was fantastic for Harry last season to get three games in the FA Cup and that experience has put him in the shop window for us to get the opportunity to get him out on loan

“At his age, he needs to go and get game exposure. It’s a tough challenge to go to Dundee United in the Scottish Championship.

“He’ll be playing men’s football week in, week out and he’s got to earn the right to be in the team. They’re going to be chasing promotion back to the Scottish Premier League.

“It’ll be a challenge but if he can overcome that then it’s a whole different set-up when he comes back.”

On signing the new deal, Harry Lewis said: “I’m absolutely delighted to extend my stay. I signed two years ago and everybody has made me feel very welcome ever since I came in and I’m really looking forward to continuing the progression we have made over the last few years under Dave and with the lads there.

“It’s just been really good being in and around these experienced lads and learning from the best goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach in the country.”

On his loan to the Tangerines, he said: “We decided at the end of last season that, for the way forward, it was about going out and getting regular game time in men’s football and when the opportunity came to go to Dundee United you realise what a massive club it is, even if they are in the second division in Scotland – they’ve got a massive fanbase and the aim for them is to win the league this year, so if I can be a part of that and help them do that then that would be great.

“The experience of playing week in and week out in men’s football is exactly what I need going forward.”

Huddersfield and Southampton in transfer battle for £6m-rated Zlatko Junuzovic

Show/hide article…

Zlatko Junuzovic is linked to a move to the Premier League

Terriers boss David Wagner has targeted the Austria international as his 10th summer signing for the Premier League new boys.

But he faces stiff competition from recently installed Saints chief Mauricio Pellegrino, who is a big admirer of the 29-year-old former Austria Vienna ace.

Junuzovic has just entered the final year of his contract with Bremen, and the Bundesliga outfit want him to sign a new deal.

But Junuzovic, who has already rejected a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, is keen to continue his career in England’s top flight.

Wagner knows Junuzovic well from his time as a coach at Borussia Dortmund and believes the 55-times capped Austrian’s game is ideally suited to the Premier League.

Van Dijk will not be involved for Saints as they start pre-season fixtures

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk will not be involved for Saints this afternoon when they kick off their pre-season programme against St Gallen in Switzerland.

At Saints’ training camp in Austria, the Dutchman has been stepping up his recovery from the foot ligament injury which kept him sidelined from January until the end of last season.

It is understood that Van Dijk is yet to join in full contact training, but has been working back to full fitness under the careful watch of Mauricio Pellegrino and Saints’ medical team.

It means the St Gallen game comes too soon for the 26-year-old captain.

Pellegrino intends to give most players game time against the Swiss Super League outfit, who Saints play at FC Goldach’s Sportanlage Kellen ground at 3.30pm BST this afternoon.

The Argentine boss will swap his starting 11 around at half time to enable everyone to get some minutes out on pitch.

Meanwhile, rookie goalkeeper Harry Lewis has joined Dundee United on loan for next season after signing a new three year contract at St Mary’s yesterday.

The 19-year-old made his Saints debut last season at Norwich in the FA Cup third round draw.

He played the replay against the Canaries at St Mary’s, before playing his third game for the club in the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal in the fourth round of the competition.

Head of goalkeeping Dave Watson said: “It was fantastic for Harry last season to get three games in the FA Cup and that experience has put him in the shop window for us to get the opportunity to get him out on loan.

“At his age, he needs to go and get game exposure. It’s a tough challenge to go to Dundee United in the Scottish Championship.

Pellegrino’s options for Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will be well in the process of shaping his Saints team now - and one of the main areas of curiosity is how the Argentine will utilise Manolo Gabbiadini.

With top-scorer Charlie Austin out injured for much of last term and Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez struggling for goals, predecessor Claude Puel used the Italy international as an out-and-out striker after his £14.6m arrival from Napoli in January.

The 25-year-old’s sharp eye for a run and precision finishing saw him net six goals in his opening four Saints appearances.

Although his scoring streak ran dry after a groin injury, Gabbiadini has demonstrated his eye for goal in Saints’ pre-season training camp in Austria.

But, with last term’s nine-goal top-scorer Austin back fit after a dislocated shoulder, Pellegrino could see it fit to either partner him with Gabbiadini or post the Italian in a different role.

While playing in Serie A, the former Sampdoria man was highly effective as an attacking midfielder, anywhere across the front three.

With pace and strength, along with quality close control, Pellegrino might consider letting Gabbiadini loose in behind Austin, providing a service to the 28-year-old frontman, who is a real dangerman in the box.

If Pellegrino were to set-up Saints in the club’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, Gabbiadini could operate next Dusan Tadic, James Ward-Prowse or Nathan Redmond in that area, making for a potentially potent attacking line-up.

Although, the St Mary’s chief, is known for his tactical flexibility and could well see potential in stationing Gabbiadini next to Austin up top, or with Long or Sam Gallagher.

An insight in to Pellegrino’s formation plans will be gained today when Saints take on St Gallen in their first pre-season friendly.

With a very youthful 28-man squad at his disposal, it is unlikely too much impetus will be place on the game’s result, although it’ll certainly be a chance to get a sneak peak of what Pellegrino’s planning.

The attacking areas are certainly a big point of interest for Saints supporters, after Puel’s team last season produced just 17 home goals in 19 Premier League games.
