Southampton 0-3 Manchester City: 5 things we learned

Show/hide article…

Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool to go third after cruising to victory at Southampton.

City turned on the style in the second half to bag all three points with all their goals coming after the break.

Captain Vincent Kompany headed City in front from David Silva’s corner in the 55th minute.

Leroy Sane then rounded off a slick City counter also involving Sergio Aguero, Silva and Kevin De Bruyne to make it 2-0 in the 77th minute.

And Aguero got in on the act three minutes later when he headed in De Bruyne’s cross.

Here are five things we learned…

At one stage during the first half Southampton could hardly get out of their half as Manchester city played keep ball, racking up the passing stats just as Pep Guardiola no doubt likes.

In the second half they added pace, ruthlessness and were clinical in front of goal to deservedly bag all three points.

After Vincent Kompany’s first goal since August 2015 two moments of City class ensured they ran out easy winners as they carved Southampton apart on the break to make it 2-0 before Sergio Aguero headed in a third from an excellent Kevin De Bruyne cross.

Pep Guardiola reached a Manchester City landmark though perhaps not the sort he would have had in mind at the start of the season.

The Spaniard’s four alterations to his starting XI made it a staggering 100 for the season.

Raheem Sterling, John Stones, Fabian Delph and Aleksandar Kolarov were the men to drop out this time in Guardiola’s latest reshuffle.

All the changes this season have made it pretty clear that Guardiola doesn’t know his best team though he could also have had one eye on next week’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

The Italian hardly got a kick on his return to the Southampton team after missing the last three games with a groin injury.

But his popularity among the home fans after his prolific start to his Saints career was underlined when Claude Puel’s decision to take him off after an hour was roundly jeered.

Despite being isolated and starved of service for most of the game Gabbiadini still set up Southampton’s best chance.

Dusan Tadic skied it over early on. Had that been the other way around the south coast side would almost certainly have taken the lead.

He had let in the last seven he had faced before today and not stopped a shot since January. But when he saved Maya Yoshida’s header in the 73rd minute that horror run finally came to an end, sparking sarcastic cheers from his own fans.

In truth, serious questions would be asked if he had let it in. It was a routine save. And Southampton will be kicking themselves for not testing him more because he still looked nervous every time the ball went near him.

His distribution, the one quality Pep Guardiola signed him for, was dodgy and often delayed as he took an age to make up his mind, spreading panic in the City defence. He looked less than convincing from a couple of high balls chucked into his box too.

Southampton rookie Jack Stephens is keeping experienced Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres out of the side.

On this evidence you can see why. Stephens, 23, stood up well against was Sergio Aguero one of the

toughest opponents he could face, frustrating the Argentinian countless times with perfectly-timed interceptions, the best in the 73rd minutes when he was one-on-one and back peddling towards his own

goal as City broke.

One sprawling block to deny David Silva was also vital. And despite being relatively inexperienced he seemed to be

doing a lot of the leading of the Southampton defence.

But there was a valuable lesson too as he let Aguero out of his sights just once and he headed in City’s third to take some of the shine off his performance.

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City: Saints’ run comes to a crushing end

Show/hide article…

Saints’ three game unbeaten run came to an end as they lost 3-0 to Manchester City at St Mary’s.

City dominated possession throughout the game, but it was Saints who had the better chances in a goalless first half.

However, they were made to pay for failing to convert as City showed their ruthless side in the second period, with goals from Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero condemning Saints to a defeat which keeps them tenth.

Manchester City’s attacking threat was obvious from the moment the teamsheet came out with Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Leroy Sane, Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure for Saints to deal with.

They were a handful from the kick-off, with Sergio Aguero going close twice in a matter of seconds early on.

His first chance saw him stretch for Sane’s right wing cross at the far post but he couldn’t direct it on target.

Aguero didn’t have to wait long for a better opening but this time having bought himself a yard of space in the area he shot low across goal but wide.

It was a hat-trick of missed chances for Aguero on nine minutes as he peeled off deep and volleyed a corner from just inside the area, but it was a tough chance and it was comfortably off target.

Saints took a while to get a spell of possession, but when they did they created a golden opportunity on 14 minutes.

Nathan Redmond fed the ball down the left to Manolo Gabbiadini, he cut it back to Dusan Tadic in space 12 yards out, but the Serbian skied his first time effort over the bar.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg became the first player in the book for an overenthusiastic challenge as he slid in and ploughed through the back of Silva.

As the half wore on City still bossed possession with Saints finding it hard to get any meaningful time on the ball.

However, Saints were doing a good job of containing City and their attacking threats. They looked a solid and compact unit, and were leaving little room between the lines for their opponents to exploit.

While City had a lot of the ball, Saints were restricting them to fairly harmless areas.

Cedric Soares was presented with an unlikely chance on 35 minutes as Claudio Bravo flapped at a cross and it fell to him. However, the right back’s half volley was not struck cleanly and City cleared the danger. Moments later Steven Davis headed over from James Ward-Prowse’s cross.

City were left with heads in hands on 36 minutes as Silva missed the target from just a few yards out at the far post after Aguero’s chipped cross deflected up to find him.

Pep Guardiola was adamant his side should have a penalty moments later as Sane went down trying to round the diving Fraser Forster, but referee Neil Swarbrick felt the keeper got the slightest of touches to the ball before making contact with the man, and replays suggested it was a fantastic decision.

Toure was the next to threaten but headed wide from a corner before Cedric went in the book for jumping into a tackle with Fernandinho.

Ryan Bertrand was lucky to escape without a card after a foul which saw him rake down the back of Aguero’s left calf.

Silva had the final sight at goal of the half but dragged it wide and it was goalless at the break.

There were sighters for both sides early in the second period with Toure’s shot guided towards Forster while Ward-Prowse curled a 20 yard free kick wide of the near post.

Forster was extended on 55 minutes as Jesus Navas struck a crisp shot from 25 yards out which the Saints keeper turned over the bar.

However, he was beaten from the corner as Silva whipped in an inswinger from the left and found Vincent Kompany. He had got ahead of Maya Yoshida and held off the defender to head downwards from six yards out.

It was central and bounced up almost straight at Forster but from close range he couldn’t quite get his left arm to it to bat it away.

Puel reacted by making a double change with Shane Long and Sofiane Boufal replacing Ward-Prowse and Gabbiadini, with the latter change greeted by boos from a section of Saints fans.

City were suddenly looking rampant and as if they wanted a second goal to give themselves a cushion. Kompany got in another shot in the area but it was blocked on the way to goal.

They came close again on 65 minutes as De Bruyne’s low centre was deflected goalwards by Yoshida. Forster got down to push the ball away but it fell to Silva whose follow-up shot was blocked by Jack Stephens.

Saints were lucky to escape as Boufal was caught dwelling on the ball by Silva, who set Aguero away. Thankfully Stephens was alert to the danger and did well to get a foot in at the crucial moment.

Yoshida could have equalised on 73 minutes as Saints had their first effort on target. He met a Tadic cross unmarked at the far post six yards out but guided his header straight at Bravo.

City wrapped it up on 77 minutes with a devastating counter attacking goal.

Saints were committed up field and City quickly worked the ball to Silva, who produced an instant pass to De Bruyne, who had the whole Saints half to run into.

He had Sane in support on his left and squared to his teammate who put a low finish past Forster for 2-0.

It got worse three minutes later as City added a third.

De Bruyne got to the left by-line and stood up a brilliant cross into the six yard box. Aguero got in between Cedric and Stephens and headed home from a couple of yards out.

Saints made one final change with Long replaced by Jay Rodriguez 22 minutes after coming on and exchanging what appeared words with Claude Puel and Eric Black before going down the tunnel.

It proved to be the last talking point of the match as City cruised to the final whistle and the three points.

Saints were soundly beaten as Manchester City took a 3-0 victory away from St Mary’s to go third in the Premier League.

Saints held on for a long time, but were finally undone on 55 minutes when City captain Vincent Kompany headed home from a David Silva corner.

Fraser Forster should have done better with it, but he could do nothing as it bounced close to him and into the net.

City doubled their lead with 12 minutes left as Silva released Kevin De Bruyne on the right to square it to Leroy Sane, who slotted home.

And it was all over on 80 minutes when Sergio Aguero netted his 11th goal in as many games, heading home from De Bruyne’s stood up cross.

It’s a difficult one to take, says Stephens

Show/hide article…

Vincent Kompany’s first-half header put the visitors ahead before Leroy Sané and Sergio Agüero confirmed the victory for Pep Guardiola’s men.

And Stephens, who played 90 minutes at centre back alongside Maya Yoshida, believes Saints struggled to deal with City’s quality on the counter.

“The result is very disappointing and difficult to take,” he explained.

“I thought we were in the game for maybe 65 minutes, but when that first goal comes in it becomes very difficult to get back into the game.

“Against good sides like Manchester City you get punished on the counter attack, and that’s what happened to us today.”

Despite the disappointing score line, Stephens was keen to emphasise the importance of having a strong finish to the season.

And with Chelsea up next, the defender knows that Saints cannot afford to dwell on the City defeat for too long.

“Chelsea is the next game and we want to get a positive result,” he continued.

“It’s not going to be easy because none of the games in this league are going to be easy.

“It’ll be a similar test to today and we are going to be going there trying to pick up the right result.”

Puel: We didn’t reach our levels

Show/hide article…

After Vincent Kompany’s header opened the scoring, Saints were punished twice on the counter-attack by an incisive City side.

“It’s a disappointment because I think there are opportunities to make a good thing,” Puel reflected.

“It was not enough from us with the quality and our passing. We kept good organisation in defence but when we recovered the ball we didn’t do enough.

“It was important to continue and we were too nervous today, so it’s not a good day for us.

“The first goal changed the game as it was difficult to find an opportunity for them, but then they scored from a corner.

“After we needed to play and leave space behind our back line. It was difficult to defend against them on the counter-attack and we had to take two goals.”

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City: Puel rues “nervous” defeat

Show/hide article…

Frustrated Claude Puel said Saints were too “nervous” against Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s side completed a comprehensive 3-0 win at St Mary’s.

It is hard to fathom how that would be the case with Saints coming into the match seemingly full of confidence after three games without defeat.

However, it was a below par display from Puel’s men as they were soundly defeated.

He said: “Yes disappointment but not just about the result but about our play because I think we can do better.

“We didn’t show a good Southampton and good quality on the pitch and we were nervous since the beginning of the game without playing good football on the pitch.

“Congratulations to this good team, but I think we gave them opportunities and it was not sufficient for us.

“After the recovery it was good organisation for example in defence for the first half and we saw with different actions with three or four passes with good reason and intensity we can have good opportunities against this team but it was not sufficient.

“It was important to keep going and it’s a disappointment for this game because we were nervous all the game and it was not a good game.”

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City: Vincent Kompany scores as Pep Guardiola’s side cruise to win

Show/hide article…

Vincent Kompany scored his first Premier League goal since August 2015 as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Southampton 3-0 to move seven points clear of the chasing pack in the race for Champions League qualification.

The 31-year-old, who returned to City’s starting line-up to make just his fifth appearance of the season, sent the visitors on their way to victory at St. Mary’s in the 56th minute, rising highest to head David Silva’s corner past Fraser Forster.

The points were then made safe in the 77th minute with Leroy Sane finishing off a swift counter-attacking move before Sergio Aguero (80) completed the scoring on a comfortable afternoon for the visitors.

Victory moves City up into third ahead of Liverpool, who play West Brom on Super Sunday, and seven points clear of Everton in fifth and Manchester United in sixth, as Jose Mourinho’s side host Chelsea on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, Southampton, who saw a three-game unbeaten run come to an end, stay in ninth.

Manolo Gabbiadini returned from injury to start his first match in just under a month, while Kompany’s inclusion was the standout news as Guardiola made another four changes to the side that beat Hull last time out.

City started on the front foot with Clichy creating an opening for Aguero at the far post but the striker fired an awkward volley wide at the far post.

Aguero was back in the action again minutes later, bringing the ball down in the penalty area before firing a shot wide of the far post.

City were dominating the ball with Southampton sitting deep, but they finally showed their attacking intent in the 15th minute when Nathan Redmond’s pass released Gabbiadini on the right. The striker pulled the ball back for Tadic on the penalty spot but the Serbia international blazed the ball high over the crossbar.

The visitors had a clear chance of their own in the 37th minute when Aguero produced a brilliant change of pace to get to the byline before picking out Silva at the far post, but the Spanish midfielder failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy.

A minute later came the talking point of the first half when Leroy Sane strode through on goal before attempting to go around Fraser Forster. Sane went to ground after contact with Forster but the England goalkeeper appeared to get a significant touch on the ball which was spotted by referee Neil Swarbrick.

After the break, Forster got a firmer hand onto a stinging drive from Jesus Navas to palm the ball over the crossbar.

However, from the resulting corner, swung in by Silva, Kompany got his head to the ball first and Forster was unable to prevent it bouncing into the net.

Claudio Bravo, who had failed to stop any of the last seven shots on target he had faced, then caught a header from Maya Yoshida - the first save he had made since January 2.

City then promptly wrapped up the win with two goals in three minutes. First, Silva’s through-ball sent De Bruyne through and he squared for Sane to sweep past Forster for his ninth of the season.

Then, in the 80th minute, De Bruyne chipped the ball into the Saints six-yard box and Aguero nodded home at the far post to seal an ultimately comfortable, and potentially crucial, victory.

Southampton 0 Man City 3: Vincent Kompany return boosts Pep Guardiola’s men to big win

Show/hide article…

Particularly at the back, where the Belgium central defender’s commanding presence has been conspicuous by its absence while he has struggled with so many injuries. But Kompany, in only his second start in two months, proved he can be a right menace at the other end too. After City’s strikers had wasted a string of glorious chances to bury Southampton, their inspirational skipper suddenly came up trumps. Kompany rose majestically in the 54th minute to plant a header past fumbling Saints keeper Fraser Forster – and keep Pep Guardiola’s men on course for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. It was the City skipper’s first goal since August 2015 and, along with late strikes from Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero, made it six wins in the last 11 games for Pep’s boys.

City are now up to third in the table, one point above Liverpool, who travel to West Brom. And even more importantly they are seven points clear of the next group of challengers – Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal. All of which made it an excellent evening’s work on the south coast because, whatever happens over the rest of the Easter programme, Guardiola’s FA Cup semi-finalists remain in control of their own destiny in the league. The final scoreline was tough on Saints, who gave a good account of why they are probably going to finish in the top half. Manager Claude Puel’s main aim in his opening season on these shores had been to qualify for the Europa League – as his predecessor Ronald Koeman did last time out.

However, after losing in the EFL Cup Final to Man Utd, those hopes had long evaporated. Ninth in the table before kick-off yesterday, the Saints were a massive 14 points adrift of the top six. Whether that should be deemed a failure for Puel remains up for debate in these parts. There have been mutterings of discontent throughout the campaign. Some fans appear to get what he is trying to do. Others are less convinced, seemingly confused by the chopping and changing of winning personnel. That frustration can then be compounded by Puel’s inability to communicate with clarity when facing the media. His English is okay but he speaks at such lightening pace and so quietly that he is hard to understand. Yet in the last couple of months his message has been getting through to the players at least. Since that unlucky cup final reverse in late February, the Saints had lost only once in five outings – and that was to in-form Tottenham.

Indeed, they started yesterday hoping to bag a third league win on the spin for the time in Puel’s reign. All of which made this a potentially tricky test for the visitors ahead of their crunch fortnight. City began the brighter and would have enjoyed the perfect reward had Aguero hooked in at the far post after 90 seconds. That was one of three efforts from the deadly Argentina striker inside the opening eight minutes. The other two also flashed wide. If he was City’s obvious dangerman, fit-again Manolo Gabbiadini was always likely to be key for the Saints. And the £15million Italian striker did brilliantly in the 11th minute to set up a sitter for Dusan Tadic – only for the Serb to blast over.
