Manchester United to finish fourth in Premier League, says Premier Predictor

Show/hide article…

Manchester United are back in form - and the Sky Sports Premier Predictor is tipping them to finish the season fourth, ahead of their neighbours Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho’s men have spent much of the season outside of the Champions League qualifying spots but their 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, which extended their unbeaten run to 22 games, has boosted their top-four chances.

United travel to Burnley this weekend - where they have a 57 per cent chance of winning, according to the Predictor - before taking on City at the Etihad next Thursday.

The Sky Sports Premier Predictor - which uses an algorithm to rank results, previous performances and the difficulty of upcoming fixtures - reckons United have a 67 per cent chance of finishing in the top four. City’s hopes stand at 45 per cent.

Chelsea remain big favourites to win the league, despite that loss to United. The Predictor says they are 90 per cent sure to win the title, with second-placed Tottenham at 10 per cent.

At the other end of the table, Swansea (67 per cent), Middlesbrough (95 per cent) and Sunderland (98 per cent) are expected to be relegated.

Saints takeover still alive

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s hopes of a multi-million pound investment from China are not yet dead in the water.

The Daily Echo understands that talks between representatives of club owner Katharina Liebherr and potential Chinese investors are still underway, despite the shock announcement earlier in the week which had appeared to end the prospect of a deal.

While Lander Sports announced they are out of the running for Saints, their parent company, Lander Holdings, are still attempting to get a deal done.

It is believed that Liebherr has agreed in principle to sell Lander an 80 per cent stake in the club in exchange for around £210m.

Liebherr would retain the other 20 per cent in order to ensure not only a smooth transition but also to retain a say in things until she is totally satisfied the time is right for her to exit. At that stage she would sell her remaining stake to Lander.

Confusion has reigned since the announcement to the Chinese stock exchange by Lander Sports, which took St Mary’s by surprise.

In their statement, Lander Sports appeared to kill off their interest in Saints, citing Chinese market conditions amongst other things.

Interestingly, that announcement came six months after Lander Sports first announced the restructuring that would take place due to their interest in buying a significant stake in Saints.

That move required them to suspend share trading for a six month period.

Lander Holdings Group, of which the sports division is a subsidiary, deals in real estate, hotel investment and management and software development, and is not listed on the stock exchange.

The company is headed by Gao Jisheng, the 64-year-old founder of Lander who is estimated to be worth around $1.5bn.

Saints are seeking reassurance from Lander over the position of the deal, though, as you would logically expect, the discussions are not taking place with the club itself.

Instead, the talks have been between intermediaries of Liebherr and Lander.

Though any deal is far from certain, it suddenly looks far more likely than earlier this week when St Mary’s was stunned by the statement to the stock exchange.

It said: “Whether the company can eventually complete the acquisition of the target firm’s shares remains uncertain.

“To keep to principle of prudence, ensure the company’s development remains normal and to safeguard the majority of investors’ interests, the company has decided to end this major asset restructuring.”

Saints are in no position to comment on the matter given the talks are with Liebherr, and the owner, who inherited the club from her late father Markus, has issued just one statement on the matter.

In it she said: “Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club. A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

“The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey. “Together we have had many years of progression and success, and ensuring this continues is the main focus of any possible partnership."

Study shows Premier League clubs are failing disabled supporters

Show/hide article…

The majority of Premier League clubs are still failing disabled supporters, according to a new study.

Analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has revealed that only seven Premier League clubs are providing the minimum number of wheelchair spaces, and only the same number have larger, fully-equipped toilets, known as ‘Changing Places’, installed.

Seven clubs are also breaking the Premier League’s own rules by not publishing access statements to give disabled fans essential information about their ground, a review by the EHRC has determined.

The findings were based on responses to questions put to all 20 Premier League clubs.

The clubs failing to meet the minimum requirements have been given a September deadline to publish a clear action plan and timetable for improvement, or face a statutory investigation by the EHRC.

Commission chairman David Isaac said: "The end of the season is fast approaching and time is running out for clubs.

"The information we received from some clubs was of an appalling standard, with data missing and with insufficient detail.

"What is clear is that very few clubs are doing the minimum to meet the needs of disabled supporters.

"The Premier League itself does not escape blame. They need to make the concerns of disabled fans a priority and start enforcing their own rule book.

“We will be meeting individual clubs and asking them to explain themselves and tell us what their plans are.”

The equality watchdog said it would be opening a call for evidence from the end of the season and speaking to disabled supporters’ groups to find out their experiences.

Clare Lucas, activism manager for the learning disability charity Mencap, said: “For too long Premier League clubs have neglected the needs of their disabled fans, many of whom are forced to be changed on toilet floors, because clubs are yet to install proper changing places facilities. It is simply inexcusable.”

A statement from the Premier League reads: "In September 2015, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to improve their disabled access provisions by meeting the Accessible Stadia Guide (ASG) by August 2017.

"Clubs are working hard to improve their facilities and rapid progress has been made.

"Given the differing ages and nature of facilities, some clubs have faced significant built environment challenges. For those clubs, cost is not the determining factor.

"They have worked, and in some cases continue to work, through issues relating to planning, how to deal with new stadium development plans, how to best manage fan disruption or, where clubs don’t own their own grounds, dealing with third parties.

“Clubs will continue to engage with their disabled fans and enhance their provisions in the coming months, years and beyond.”

Premier League clubs’ see revenues reach record high but make a loss overall

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs saw revenues rise to a record £3.6bn in 2015-16, according to Deloitte, but posted pre-tax losses overall.

The revenues generated represent a £0.2bn increase from 2014-15 (£3.4bn), the business advisory firm states, with Manchester United and Manchester City responsible for more than half of the rise.

United’s revenue grew to £515m, which saw them top the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time since 2003-04 as the world’s highest revenue-generating club.

The 20 English top-flight clubs’ combined operating profits (excluding player transfers, net interest charges and the value of player contracts) remain at £0.5bn after wage costs increased by 12% to £2.3bn.

But after two consecutive seasons of pre-tax profits, the clubs were back in the red with pre-tax losses of £110m.

Dan Jones, partner and head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "Our analysis reveals a return to pre-tax losses, following two consecutive years of pre-tax profits.

“However, it is worth noting that this is due to a small number of one-off ‘exceptional’ costs, and we fully expect that the Premier League’s new three-year broadcast rights deal will see a return to record levels of profitability in the 2016/17 season.”

Southampton join Everton and West Ham and in race for Sigurdsson

Show/hide article…

Southampton have joined Everton, West Ham and Newcastle in the chase for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 27-year-old Swansea midfielder is valued at £35million though relegation could weaken the Welsh club’s bargaining power.

Everton, who had a bid rejected for the Icelandic playmaker last summer, remain keen.

Sigurdsson has been the standout player at the Liberty Stadium this season and whatever fate befalls his club it is inevitable he will remain in the Premier League.

Koeman remains a fan of Sigurdsson and is looking to make quality additions to his squad that will provide depth with Everton almost certain to be playing in the Europa League.

Southampton, meanwhile, are also keen on Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson while his teammate Charlie Taylor is a target for West Bromwich Albion.

Arsenal look to gazump Chelsea as Wenger plots tactical change

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger wants to hijack Chelsea’s move for Virgil van Dijk as he prepares to switch to a back-three on a long-term basis.

Arsenal have made enquiries about Southampton’s Dutch centre half as they look to bolster their defence as part of a major squad overhaul this summer.

Chelsea are in pole position and remain confident of signing van Dijk but Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City are also keen and now Arsenal have entered the frame for a deal which could cost £50m.

Wenger wants a new centre half as the players believe he is ready to move towards a new formation having used a back three at Middlesbrough on Monday night.

Gunners boss Wenger has been renowned for favouring a back four during his 21 year reign and could revert to that system for Sunday’s Cup semi-final showdown against Manchester City.

However he has been working on the different formation in training and that willingness to change will be seen as a positive.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte heralded the current trend towards using a back three and more clubs are now using it to good effect.

Arsenal have struggled defensively this season and that could signal a major shake-up with Nacho Monreal possibly returning to Spain while Schalke left back Sead Kolasinac is expected to come in but they would look to sign a dominant centre half.

Van Dijk, 25, was on Arsenal’s radar when he left Celtic to join Southampton for £13m but they did not move for him and that is now a source of regret.

Germany international Shkodran Mustafi has had limited success since his £35m move from Valencia last summer but it is an area that Wenger knows needs strengthening.

They have also looked at Roma’s Kostas Manolas and again could have signed him before he left Olympiakos in 2014 but now it would cost in excess of £35m.

Arsenal are determined to spend big this summer and beating off Premier League rivals would send a clear message of intent.

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny, who has been enjoying an impressive loan spell at Roma, is likely to be on the move - and could stay in Italy.

Szczesny has one year left on his current deal at Arsenal, Juventus are keen as well as Roma and he could leave on a free transfer if he has to wait for the club that he wants.

Southampton eye £15million summer move for Swansea star

Show/hide article…

Sigurdsson, 27, is under contract until 2020 but will quit the relegation-haunted Swans if they lose their battle for Premier League survival.

Saints’ scouting department have been tracking the Icelandic international for the past two years.

Former Reading and Tottenham star Sigurdsson has scored nine goals in 35 games this season to give the Swans a fighting chance of staying up.

Saints boss Claude Puel has been promised a bumper transfer kitty to fund a European push next season.

Leeds defender Pontus Jansson is also top of his list of targets.
