China firm scraps deal to buy stake in Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chinese stadium builder Lander Sports has confirmed it’s terminating plans to buy a stake in Southampton Football Club.

The company cited unspecified policy changes as the Chinese government clamps down on overseas investments.

The deal would have made Southampton, currently ninth in the Premier League, the latest English club to gain Chinese investment.

Saints helping students get most out of school

Show/hide article…

The work of the Premier League and its clubs in primary schools through PL Primary Stars has been well-documented of late.

But many clubs also work in secondary schools in their local communities and Southampton have been doing so through their Community Champions programme.

Saints Foundation, the club’s charitable arm, created Community Champions to strengthen partnerships with six secondary schools in the city with the aim to help young people who find it difficult to engage within a traditional school environment.

At each of those schools a full-time Saints Foundation project officer, or Community Champion, builds a rapport with students who have been identified by the school and other external agencies.

Saints Foundation’s Ben Kemplen, working at Redbridge Community School, said in the BBC’s Match of the Day Community feature: “A lot of what we’re trying to do is improve the confidence and help these students fulfil their potential.

“I understand we’re not going to change the lives of every single kid in the school, but if it’s just a few - their attendance improves or they’re coming into school with a smile on their face - it’s little things that go a long way in the work we’re doing here.”

So far 73 young people have participated in mentoring sessions offered by the Community Champions, receiving help for low self-esteem, behavioural issues, poor attendance and attainment as well as bullying.

Woodlands Community College is another of the schools to benefit from the programme, with Ben Keens, the Saints Foundation Community Champion there, saying: “We were struggling to get numbers in some of the projects we run.

"Now that’s shot up, and that’s only going to help students improve, not just physically with their ability, but socially as well.”

Southampton full-back Sam McQueen, born and raised locally, visited one of Ben’s coaching sessions at the school.

“Football can be used as a tool that they’ll listen too," he said. "If that can be translated into their education as well, that’s a very good thing.”

Liverpool and Manchester City target set for shock return

Show/hide article…

Liverpool and Manchester City target Virgil van Dijk could make a shock return for Southampton before the end of the season.

There were fears the Dutch defender would be ruled out for the rest of the campaign after he suffered an ankle injury against Leicester back in January.

Van Dijk has been wearing a protective boot and was on crutches for more than a month and the Saints were refusing to rush him back into action as they have nothing left to play for.

The 25-year-old has been one of the star performers for the south coast club and has attracted strong interest from both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola with some reports suggesting he could be sold for as much as £50million during the summer.

Liverpool and Manchester City are believed to be in the market for a top quality central defender and Van Dijk would certainly be a major attraction for any top side in the top flight.

The news of his recovery will come as a major boost to the top clubs chasing his signature after the player posted a video on his Instagram account showing him running on a treadmill.

Van Dijk was clearly happy with his progress and said: “Time to step it up.”

It is unlikely that Southampton fans will get to see their star defender in action before the end of April but he could put himself in contention for the final few games – ironically against Liverpool at Anfield on May 7.

Claude Puel’s side have a tough end to the campaign with games against Arsenal and Manchester United and they will welcome the return of Van Dijk at the heart of the defence.

Blackburn Rovers vs. Bristol City - Football Match Report - April 17, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Sam Gallagher’s second-half header earned Blackburn a 1-1 draw against Bristol City to salvage what could prove a crucial point in the relegation battle.

Rovers looked to be heading for a second feeble home defeat in succession following Tammy Abraham’s 25th goal of the season in the 14th minute.

Tony Mowbray’s side looked devoid of ideas and the Robins could have added to their advantage through Matty Taylor and Abraham, but Gallagher headed home a 71st-minute leveller to leave Rovers one point from safety with three games remaining.

City have only won one of their last 17 away league games, but are four points ahead of the drop zone.

Both sides opted for unchanged line-ups after victories in their last games.

The hosts conceded from City’s first attack when Abraham sprung the offside trap to latch on to Jamie Paterson’s through-ball and his nonchalant flick from 12 yards evaded David Raya.

Blackburn responded with a first effort of their own, but Gallagher’s header was easy for goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

It was the visitors who looked more likely to add to the scoring as Josh Brownhill and Paterson forced routine saves from Raya, who then had to be alert to dive low down to his left to thwart Korey Smith’s 30-yard drive half an hour in.

Abraham could have added to his impressive tally before the break when Tommie Hoban’s headed clearance fell invitingly to him, but he volleyed wildly over.

Blackburn’s best chance of the half came in the final minute when the ball ricocheted kindly to Hope Akpan, but his effort was tame.

The Robins should have doubled their lead minutes after the restart when Brownhill’s superb flick took him clear of two Rovers players, but Taylor blazed the cutback over when well placed.

Raya kept his team in the game in the 58th minute with a stunning save to deny Abraham, whose close-range effort from Paterson’s pass looked destined for the net until the sprawling goalkeeper intervened.

Brownhill shot straight at Raya soon after and the visitors were made to pay in the 71st minute when Elliott Bennett’s deep cross was met at the back post by Gallagher, who skilfully guided his header back across goal for his 12th of the season.

The goal have Blackburn a lift and Jason Lowe lashed a 25-yard drive just wide before Gallagher saw a penalty appeal waved away after he went down under the attention of Smith.

The hosts could not force a winner, but the draw felt like a point gained.

Players who were hugely popular at one club, but failed to win major trophies during their time there

Show/hide article…

They were crowd favourites and those still with us probably never have to worry about buying a matchday pint. The only thing missing from their time there is major silverware.

This isn’t to say they never won anything in their careers, just at the clubs where they were/are revered.

Here, talkSPORT looks at some examples, beginning with Alan Shearer at Newcastle, who fans would love to have seen lift silverware in the famous black and white stripes.

Blackburn 1-1 Bristol City: Sam Gallagher heads equaliser

Show/hide article…

For the first time in a long time, Blackburn looked galvanised. Ewood Park bayed, Sam Gallagher having equalised with 19 minutes left.

Bristol City were on the ropes, a chance to finally leave the Championship’s bottom three behind having now presented itself, but Rovers could not locate their weak spot.

Certainly a missed opportunity and luckily for Tony Mowbray there are others equally inept at grinding out victories in this mad scramble for survival.

The gap with Nottingham Forest is down to a point but a rousing late rally amid a surprising intense atmosphere after Gallagher’s 71st-minute goal should have garnered more.

‘We’re not happy with a point,’ Mowbray said. ‘It’s a point we have to put into the bag and move on. It’d be nice going to Brentford on the last day not being in the bottom three.’

They need to start the next two games far better, then. Mowbray called Rovers ‘tepid’ as they were initially outclassed by a Bristol City side who should now be safe from relegation.

‘Some of the younger players find it difficult to deal with the expectation,’ Mowbray added. ‘But we’ve had 12 games and have only been beaten in nine of them. I believe we can do it.’

Before all that, Rovers were frozen by fear, incapable of stringing any number of meaningful passes together. They went behind inside 14 minutes.

Dozing at the back, the hosts allowed Tammy Abraham to latch on to Jamie Paterson’s clever chip. With hands up for offside and Derrick Williams playing the striker on, Abraham ran way beyond the ball, enticing goalkeeper David Raya to rush out, before wonderfully flicking past him.

‘My analyst has told me it was 31 passes that led to the goal,’ Lee Johnson - whose career at Ashton Gate has been transformed recently - said. 'Tammy’s market value has probably shot up and we’ve done well for him and Chelsea too.

‘You learn a lot about yourself during the bad runs. You look at every fine detail, and you keep believing when everybody else doesn’t. You make sure you turn up every day - it’s in your blood.’

It is just two defeats in nine for the Robins, but Johnson knows they should have put the game before Rovers long before this became a contest thanks to Elliot Bennett’s devilish cross and Gallagher’s precise header.

And it even finished with Mowbray crying foul after Gallagher seemed to be felled by Korey Smith in the box.

‘It was a blatant penalty,’ Mowbray added. ‘I’m not sure how it wasn’t a penalty. We have to live with it.’

"The frustration was the goal we let in really. We ultimately tried to play offside and it was a really sloppy decision from us. And yet the story of the game was the changes we made, the way the team clawed their way back into the game and then, for us, ultimately a penalty decision that wasn’t given, that having watched it back looks a clear penalty kick.

“I’m not sure why it wasn’t given to be honest. He’s goal side, he’s inside, he’s running into the box with control of the ball and the boy falls on the back of his legs and brings him down and I’m not sure why it wasn’t given, but there you go.”

"I thought it was outstanding, our performance today. My only criticism really is we should have put it to bed. We have to make sure we’re more clinical with our chances because we created numerous ones.

“I thought the goal was outstanding, I think it was 31 passes that led to the goal, so my analyst tells me. It shows that we have a bright young side that has to do a job this year and then we can kick on.”

Virgil van Dijk has posted footage of himself running as he attempts to get fit enough for a first team comeback before the end of the season.

The Dutch centre half took to Instagram to share the footage of him running on an anti-gravity treadmill at Staplewood with the caption “time to step it up.”

Van Dijk, who has been constantly linked with a £50m summer move away from Saints, has been out injured since January.
