Yoshida relishing his chance in Fonte’s absence

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida is grabbing his chance with both hands in Jose Fonte’s absence at Saints.

Fonte has been told that he is unlikely to play during the January transfer window, with his future at St Mary’s in doubt after he handed in a request to leave the club.

With Claude Puel looking for “stability” while Fonte looks for a move, it has paved the way for Yoshida to become Virgil van Dijk’s regular partner in defence during the recent run of games.

The Japanese international has started the last four matches in all competitions, and is expected to be selected at Turf Moor today as Saints travel to Burnley in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is untroubled by Fonte’s situation and is just focusing on taking his big chance.

“I understand my situation. This is football, it’s the way it is. It’s just about myself. It’s either grab it or leave it and I want to grab it [the chance],” he said.

“It’s a personal thing. I don’t know what’s going on with him (Jose Fonte) and the club, but I just focus on myself,” he added.

"There’s nothing about Jose playing or not playing. It’s not about someone coming in or leaving - it’s just about myself.

"If I play well, it’s good. It’s not competition between me and other players. It’s competition with myself.

"I need to show good performances. I want to win and I want to make a cleansheet - that’s it.

“This is my reputation and I just focus on myself.”

Yoshida was deployed as a right-back on several occasions last season, where he often struggled.

He made some costly errors and lost a lot of confidence, but he revealed that he feels much better now and is grateful to Claude Puel for giving him a fair chance.

“We’ve had many games, including Europa League. That’s why I’ve been able to play more regularly to get back my fitness and confidence,” he said.

"I’ve been able to play at centre-back as well. "Of course, (Ronald) Koeman gave me a chance to play [at right-back], but centre-back is better for me.

“The manager (Claude Puel) gave not only me but other player us fair chances to everyone. That’s a good thing.”

Yoshida has urged Saints to keep their feet on the ground after winning against Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final first leg this week.

The defender says it’s vital to just focus on Burnley, rather than get excited about the prospect of reaching Wembley.

“Both feet need to stay on the ground and we have to do what we have to do,” he said.

“The important thing now is the recovery is good and be prepared for Saturday.”

"Winning is the best way to come back our confidence.

“There are important games coming. We just need to keep playing the same way and fight for something better.”

“Premier League is the highest priority for us. Burnley have played well at home, so it’s going to be tough, but we need to focus on three points.”

Liverpool transfer update: Wages could prove an issue with this deal - journalist

Show/hide article…

Sakho is free to leave the Reds this month. Jurgen Klopp has frozen the Frenchman out and is keen to get him off the books. Sevilla, Southampton and Swansea are all interested in Sakho.

But they won’t be able to pay him what he’s on at Liverpool. Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol wrote on Twitter: “Sevilla, Southampton and Swansea interested in Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho but can’t match £105,000 a week he’s on at Anfield.” Swansea are after a new centre-back to help with their Premier League survival bid, while Liverpool may hold off selling to Southampton until after the EFL Cup semi-final second leg between the two clubs.

Saints head to Anfield with a 1-0 lead and Liverpool won’t want to do the south coast club any favours. Sakho will appeal to Sevilla because he can play in the Champions League. The Spanish side tackle Leicester in the last 16 and the defender would be available for the game as he hasn’t played in the competition this season.

Tony Cascarino rants about Jose Fonte, Dimitri Payet and Diego Costa

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Jose Fonte, 33, last week handed in a transfer request in the first of January’s big sagas. His diva behaviour was followed by Dimitri Payet and Diego Costa. Payet, 29, has gone on strike at West Ham while Costa, 28, has had his head turned by a £30m-a-year offer from China. But ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino thinks their conduct is all wrong.

“Be a legend at the club like Didier Drogba - but this doesn’t do him, Payet, Fonte any good at all” He told Sky Sports: "From Fonte to Payet, we’ve lost Graham Taylor this week who had morals and principles about the game. "I find it so strange that a £30m offer from China will have Diego like this. How can you be unhappy? "But there’s a bigger picture than money. You’re getting paid a hell of a lot to play for Chelsea. "He’s not on a mere 50 grand a week - that sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? - but they’re getting hugely rewarded in the Premier League.

"They’re top players and fair play to them, but go and play in a league that means nothing at the moment? I don’t get it. "I’d never advise any player to move to China. "You’re lucky to be playing for Chelsea, you’re fighting for the title - how ambitious are you? “Be a legend at the club like Didier Drogba - but this doesn’t do him, Payet, Fonte any good at all.”

Rodriguez excited for return to Turf Moor

Show/hide article…

Rodriguez was injured with Saints visited Burnley during the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, but is now back fit and firing for Claude Puel’s men.

The striker, who put in an impressive display against Liverpool on Wednesday night, is excited to be heading back to his former club for the first time.

“It’s great for me. I haven’t played there since I left, so it will be nice to be back at Turf Moor, Rodriguez said ahead of the game.

“As soon as you prepare, you just prepare for a Premier League game.

“They’re doing really well. They work really hard and play good football. It’s a dangerous team, but we want to put our game towards them.

“At the moment we are just taking it one game at a time. We want to finish as high as we can.”

While Rodriguez is pleased to see his former side doing well, he hopes the points will be heading back down the south coast on Saturday.

“To see them do well is really good,” he added.

“Hopefully it’s a good occasion, but to get the win is so important for us at the moment. They’re playing well, so we know it will be tough.”
