10 things to look out for in the Premier League this weekend

Show/hide article…

The Premier League returns after the temporary break of the FA Cup, and as per usual there are a number of side-plots and interesting questions to explore ahead of the weekend.

Manchester United’s game against Liverpool may be the obvious highlight of the fixture list, but there are sure to be moments worth remembering elsewhere.

Sportsmail has considered the 10 things to look out for in the English top flight on Saturday and Sunday.

How will Leicester fans treat N’Golo Kante on his return?

Claudio Ranieri called him a ‘champion’ and demanded respect, but it will be hard for Leicester supporters to not look on with envy when Kante returns to the King Power. It’s now fair to say Kante was the most important player in Leicester’s title-winning side. He was also the only one to push for an exit.

The midfielder has spent most of the last 18 months on top of the Premier League. Chelsea have been the beneficiaries, but former fans of Kante will certainly be hoping to strike a blow to his hopes of a second winner’s medal on Saturday.

Will Paul Clement emerge victorious on his Premier League bow?

Swansea are in trouble - that much is clear. They began the season in terrible form, sacked a manager, continued in terrible form, sacked that manager’s replacement, and have hired a third coach without any experience in charge of a top-flight side.

But there are reasons to be hopeful. Clement is a highly-regarded coach who has spent years learning from Carlo Ancelotti, one of the best in the game. The level has also been so low that Clement does not have to do much to surpass his predecessors. Arsenal, who tend to struggle at the Liberty, will be trying to stop him.

How will Big Sam handle his West Ham return amid Dimitri Payet drama?

It’s fair to say that Sam Allardyce did not have the fondest relationship with West Ham’s supporters. He came in, won promotion in his first season and re-established the Hammers as a mid-table Premier League side, but did not develop any sort of affinity with them on the back of that.

He faces them on Saturday with Crystal Palace, Allardyce’s first visit to their new London Stadium. But he comes at a time of turmoil. Dimitri Payet is on strike as he looks to leave West Ham in January. It sounds like a perfect opportunity for Allardyce to get one over his old side.

Watford began last season well under Quique Sanchez Flores, surprising everyone by putting themselves in a position by which a relegation battle was always unlikely. But form dropped off and Flores was dismissed at the end of the season despite keeping Watford up.

Mazzarri, on the other hand, started the campaign well, surprising everyone, but form has dropped off. They have not won in five in the league. The Italian can look at Flores’ example and know that the Vicarage Road hierarchy will not be happy with this drop. A game against Middlesbrough is as good a time as any to turn it around.

Can Tottenham alter their form against West Brom?

West Brom’s eighth place in the Premier League table is one of the shocks of the season so far after years and years of safety without pushing on. But the Baggies have always had a slightly strange edge when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur.

The record speaks for itself. Spurs have only won one of their last seven against Tony Pulis’ side and all three of their last matches have ended 1-1. Tottenham’s title push last season faltered with the draw on April 25. Can Pulis take another result from a team he seems to have a hex on?

Can Sunderland’s wanted men keep firing while being watched?

This is usually the point at which Sunderland begin to turn it around. But this year it looks even more unlikely than ever. David Moyes has no money to spend. The squad has been weakened by AFCON absences. Their best players are being eyed up by other sides.

But Jermain Defoe’s goalscoring exploits tend to step up another gear in the last six months of the season. The only question is whether he can keep it up while West Ham are targeting him. And another key player - Patrick van Aanholt - is on Crystal Palace’s radar. Will it further unsettle an already unsettled side against Stoke?

Many would have tipped Burnley to head straight back down to the Championship this season. After all, that is what they have done in both of their last appearances in the Premier League, never lasting for more than a solitary season in the sun.

But a steady build under Sean Dyche has turned them into a strong side - never more so than at home. Burnley are sixth in the Premier League home table. A struggling Southampton side will do well not to underestimate the power of Turf Moor.

How can Bournemouth cope without Nathan Ake?

Nathan Ake’s loan spell at Bournemouth initially looked as though it would be a failure. He made just two appearances in their first 11 games. But a goal against Stoke changed everything and he became a key cog in Eddie Howe’s defence.

Unfortunately for the Cherries, the situation also changed at Chelsea. Antonio Conte switched to a three-man defence, which is perfect for Ake. He was recalled. Bournemouth now face Hull, their first Premier League opposition since Ake returned to Stamford Bridge. How they manage will be of note.

Will Morgan Schneiderlin help out his former side against Manchester City?

Arsene Wenger has always complained about mid-season transfers and this is a good example of why. Morgan Schneiderlin left Manchester United on Thursday but could still hugely contribute to their push for the top four when he faces their city rivals on Sunday.

United remain outside the Champions League places, but Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are catchable. If they were to lose against Everton, with Schneiderlin contributing, it could pan out to be one of the biggest impacts the France midfielder had for the Old Trafford side.

Can Anthony Martial continue his recent form while facing the side he made his name against?

At one point this season it looked as though Anthony Martial would be leaving Old Trafford. He was out of the side and his form had given Jose Mourinho little reason to keep him in it. Sevilla was a potential destination, Martial seemingly available on loan.

But his form improved - Martial has struck five goals in 10 games - and he now has a reasonable argument to be included against Liverpool. It was against the Anfield side that he first made a telling impact in a Manchester United shirt. It would be no shock to see him do the same on Sunday.

Cédric: We need to show strong character

Show/hide article…

Saints will be looking for a first Premier League win of 2017 when they take on the Clarets this weekend, having recorded their first victory of the year in the EFL Cup against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Sean Dyche’s side have been in good form at home this season, and Cédric says Saints must expect a difficult test.

“It’s a very tough game. We know all games are very difficult in the Premier League, but that’s how it is,” he said.

“We are used to that. Playing away at Burnley is very, very tough, but we are prepared.

“We have great players and if we think like a team and stay together, it will definitely make a difference.

“All the teams are difficult and when they play at home it’s even tougher.

“If we keep our strong mind and stay together, if we have this strong character, then we can achieve a good performance.

“We now need to win in the Premier League and then our confidence will be totally back.”

Fleming: Reading pose a tough test

Show/hide article…

Saints are set to host the Royals at Staplewood Campus on Saturday morning, in what Fleming anticipates will be a tough physical test.

“It will again be a very young side for us,” the manager explained.

“I don’t think any of the lads that played in the FA Youth Cup will start the game on Saturday. We’ll be a very young side, which is good, to be honest with you.

“It’ll be a tough game for the younger boys; Reading are quite an old and settled side - they are a physical team who are second in the league.

“So it’ll be tough but it’s fantastic for their development. They are going in and getting good minutes against a very good side early in their scholarship.”

Saints suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham in their previous league outing, despite putting in a good performance away at Little Heath.

And Fleming is hopeful his side will continue to learn from such experiences.

“They are young lads and they are going to make mistakes,” he continued.

“The important thing is that we learn from it and try not to do it again. On the whole, this season, I think they’ve done that.

“The lads are really starting to learn and come up to the level now. We saw that against West Ham where they really held their own.”

The Prediction Challenge: Sportsmail’s experts go head to head

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

First up, it’s CHRIS SUTTON vs sports news editor LAURA WILLIAMSON… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

CHRIS SUTTON: Tottenham seem to be really improving the longer this season goes on. Alli and Kane are in good form. This won’t be easy against a West Brom side who have had a good first half of the season but Tottenham will be buoyed from their victory over Chelsea. 2-1 Tottenham.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: West Brom have held something of a spell over Spurs at White Hart Lane in the last five years, but Tony Pulis’ side are struggling with injuries this time around. 3-1 Tottenham.

CHRIS SUTTON: This is a tough one to call. Southampton create a lot of chances but are not the best at converting them. They have more quality than Burnley but Sean Dyche’s side keep finding a way to pick up points at home. 1-1.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Sean Dyche’s side have an excellent home record while, despite their impressive display against Liverpool this week, goals have proved hard to come by for Southampton this season. 2-0 Burnley.

CHRIS SUTTON: This is another tricky one. Eddie Howe has a point to prove after his much-changed Bournemouth side were dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall. His side play with freedom going forwards and they will have a little bit too much for Hull. 2-1 Bournemouth.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: I fear for Hull already under Marco Silva and reckon Bournemouth can inflict yet more misery at the KCOM Stadium. 2-1 Bournemouth.

CHRIS SUTTON: Sunderland surprised everyone with their draw against Liverpool. David Moyes will feel there is still hope of beating the drop. This is a must-win game for Sunderland but with key players at the Africa Cup of Nations I can’t see them beating Stoke. 1-1.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Stoke have a pretty good record against teams at the wrong end of the table, while David Moyes’ side have hardly excelled at home this season. 2-1 Stoke.

CHRIS SUTTON: This is an important match for Arsenal to win to keep pace with the top four. If they turn up, Arsenal will have far too much quality for Swansea. 3-1 Arsenal.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Expect Arsenal to be comfortable winners at the Liberty Stadium, despite the best efforts of new Swansea boss Paul Clement. 3-1 Arsenal.

CHRIS SUTTON: An enormous game for Watford. They are in danger of getting sucked into a relegation battle. Nerves may play a part for Watford and Middlesbrough are better set up to hit them on the counter. 1-1.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: It will be an emotional occasion at Vicarage Road on Saturday so hopefully the home side can reward their fans with at least a point. 1-1.

CHRIS SUTTON: How will West Ham respond to the events of the past week? Have they got enough in their armoury? Both sides concede goals but it’s about time Sam Allardyce’s Palace players responded to him. I think he will get his first win in charge. 2-1 Palace.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Slaven Bilic says he’s down to the ‘bare bones’ in terms of his squad, Dimitri Payet is refusing to train and Sam Allardyce is facing his old club with a point to prove. What could possibly go wrong at the London Stadium? 2-1 Palace.

CHRIS SUTTON: It is really important for Chelsea that they respond after the Tottenham defeat. Leicester is not an easy place to go but they are completely inconsistent and I can see Chelsea grinding out a win. 1-0 Chelsea.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: I suspect the league leaders will bounce back strongly from their defeat by Tottenham and will have far too much for Leicester. 2-0 Chelsea.

CHRIS SUTTON: When it all clicks, City are a terrific team. Some of the link-up play between the front four who started in the 5-0 win at West Ham — Aguero, Silva, De Bruyne and Sterling — was sensational. City will create plenty of chances and if they can take them, they will win. 2-1 City.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Manchester City could have slipped out of the top four by the time they kick off at Goodison Park on Sunday and this feels like a match they must win. If they can convert their inevitable glut of chances into goals, they’ll be fine. 2-1 City.

CHRIS SUTTON: This promises to be a brilliant game. It will be a much more open game than the draw at Anfield earlier in the season and United are not going to sit in. That could play into Liverpool’s hands — they don’t know another way of playing than to attack. I have a sneaking suspicion Klopp will get a response from his players after two bad results. 3-2 Liverpool.

LAURA WILLIAMSON: Liverpool surely can’t be as bad as they were at Southampton this week, but come up against a United team who are starting to purr under Jose Mourinho. Wayne Rooney to come off the bench to score the winner? 2-1 United.

Odds slashed on Van Dijk reunion with Koeman

Show/hide article…

ON online bookie has slashed the odds on Virgil Van Dijk signing for Everton.

Ronald Koeman’s club are the new 3/1 favourites at Betfred to sign the Dutchman - the odds having tumbled from 16/1 earlier today.

Koeman was in charge at Saints when they signed the centre half for a bargain £13m from Glasgow Celtic at the end of the summer 2015 window.

Manchester City struggling at the back with skipper Vincent Kompany battling to overcome injury, are 7/1 to land £60m-rated Van Dijk this month.

Potential fourth round tie selected for TV

Show/hide article…

Should Southampton beat Norwich City in their Emirates FA Cup third round replay, they will host Arsenal in a televised game on Saturday 28th January 2017 at 5.30pm.

The fourth round tie has been selected by BT Sport 2 for live coverage, and will see Arsène Wenger’s men travel to either St Mary’s or Carrow Road to contest for a place in round five.

Saints last faced the Gunners in this competition at the final in 2003 which Arsenal won 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from Robert Pirès.

Arsenal have not won at St Mary’s in five attempts, and, earlier this season, Claude Puel’s men beat the north Londoners 2-0 at Emirates Stadium in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Burnley v Southampton team news

Show/hide article…

Scott Arfield and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are unlikely to feature for Burnley against Southampton .

The wide men suffered hamstring injuries in the FA Cup draw with Sunderland last weekend so George Boyd is set to be recalled and boss Sean Dyche could consider utilising Jeff Hendrick or Michael Kightly on the other flank.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton and defender Ben Mee are likely to return but Joey Barton, who played 90 minutes in his second debut last weekend, may have to revert to the bench.

Southampton will check on the fitness of midfielder Steven Davis.

Davis went off during the closing stages of the midweek EFL Cup victory over Liverpool at St Mary’s, so will be assessed, but captain Jose Fonte will continue to be left out of the squad after handing in a transfer request, while midfielder Sofiane Boufal has returned from African Nations Cup duty because of a knee injury.

Forward Charlie Austin (shoulder), defender Matt Targett (hamstring), goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) and full-back Jeremy Pied (knee) all continue their recovery.
