Fleming: We were good on the ball

Show/hide article…

Harlem Hale’s late strike earned Saints a share of the points at St Mary’s, and Fleming praised the way in which his men responded to playing at the stadium.

“Performance wise it was very good,” he started.

“You never really know when you play at the stadium how the young boys are going to react, but I thought they all looked very comfortable here.

“It didn’t overawe them and it was probably one of the best performances we’ve had on the ball for a long time.”

Despite their dominance on the ball, Saints were unable to find a way through and the Black Cats took the lead thanks to Owen Gamble’s first-half free-kick.

But Fleming was confident that his men would continue to create openings in the second half.

“We just told the lads to keep going at half time,” he continued.

“They are an incredibly fit bunch and in almost every game this season we have been the stronger team coming towards the end of games.

“So we told them to hang on in there because they would get stronger, and they did. We created more and more chances – thankfully one of them went in.”

Middlesbrough 1 Southampton 2: Claude Puel’s future remains uncertain despite comfortable win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel refused to confirm if he will be in charge of Southampton next season after declining to answer questions on his future. A first win in six games at already relegated Middlesbrough eased the growing pressure on the Frenchman, amid suggestions of dressing room tensions less than a year into his reign.

Goals in each half from Jay Rodriguez and substitute Nathan Redmond leave the Saints well placed to secure a fourth consecutive top 10 Premier League finish, after stories linking the club with Hull City head coach Marco Silva.

Asked if he will be at St Mary’s in August, Puel, who led his side to the League Cup final in February, said: “I prefer no answer. It’s my work and my job to develop all the team and the project and I don’t understand the question.”

Rodriguez swept home Shane Long’s 42nd-minute cross before the forward teed-up Redmond to find the top corner 12 minutes after the re-start. The visitors could even afford a second-half penalty miss as Long’s shot grazed the bar on the way over after he had been felled by goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Rodriguez and Redmond pile on misery

Show/hide article…

Southampton maintained their top-half Premier League dwelling after quality finishes either side of the break were enough to defeat relegated Middlesbrough.

Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond applied them and the visitors also missed a penalty through Shane Long during a purple patch just after half-time.

Middlesbrough responded when £6million January signing Patrick Bamford nodded in a late consolation – his first since returning to the north-east club permanently, and ending a barren spell of 33 appearances.

But it failed to spark a passionate finale to a real end-of-season affair between two clubs with big decisions to be made ahead of 2017-18.

Despite chasing a fourth top-10 finish in a row, uncertainty remains over the future of Southampton manager Claude Puel.

Here, arguably with the stiffer midweek test against Manchester United in mind, he made seven changes to his starting XI, handing league debuts to Martin Caceres and Jeremy Pied.

Understandably it took the visitors time to get a foothold in the contest. However, Middlesbrough — who have now won just one of their 10 matches under head coach Steve Agnew — were not able to take advantage.

There was an early chance for Boro’s own second-time debutant Bamford within the first 60 seconds but his control from Alvaro Negredo’s assist was not matched by the second touch and the ball sliced to safety.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a match between a team that had failed to score in 17 of their previous 36 matches and one that had not found the net in five and a quarter hours, chances were at a premium, and the first attempt on goal did not arrive until midway through the opening period when Ryan Bertrand sliced wide at the far post from Pied’s deflected cross.

Within seconds, Bamford forced the first save at the other end as Caceres’ mistake gifted Middlesbrough possession – a curling effort comfortably held by Fraser Forster.

By this stage, however, Southampton were dictating terms and it took Brad Guzan’s right palm to prevent Long’s low cross reaching Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the six-yard box.

It was a brief respite, though, as the visitors took the lead three minutes before the interval via a clinical counter-attack.

Jordie Clasie instigated the move with a ball down the right channel that set Long free and the Irish striker’s cross was met on the half-volley and swept past Guzan by Rodriguez from a dozen yards out.

Southampton’s superiority was then emphasised by the opening quarter-hour of the second period when they doubled their lead, and should have trebled it.

Awful Boro defending saw half-time substitute Redmond sneak into the left side of the penalty area unopposed and Rodriguez’s pass was cushioned, and then stroked into the top corner after a step inside the despairing lunge of Fabio.

The boos reverberating around the Riverside had not dissipated when Long was up-ended by Guzan after outstripping the home defence.

But they were spared a third goal when the Southampton man picked himself up and blazed the penalty over the top.

That would have sealed things but the failure to cash in their dominance was exposed by Bamford’s first goal since April 2015, as despite having his back to goal and being man-handled by Redmond, he got his head to flick in Viktor Fischer’s left-wing corner.

It required Forster to beat out an injury-time drive from Calum Chambers but it was too little too late for a team whose deficiencies in front of goal are all too obvious as they head straight back to the second tier.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond on target

Show/hide article…

Southampton ended their five-game winless run to pile on the agony for relegated Middlesbrough .

Claude Puel made seven changes and his makeshift side were still far too good for Boro.

Jay Rodriguez took advantage of some slack marking to open the scoring with his sixth goal of the season three minutes before half-time.

Substitute Nathan Redmond added a fine second on 57 minutes before Shane Long missed a penalty after the striker had been felled by Brad Guzan.

Patrick Bamford pulled one back on 73 minutes to give the home fans something to cheer when he headed home his first goal since April 2015.

Here are five things we learned…

Boro chairman Steve Gibson hoped Agnew would be able to lift the dressing room when he appointed him as Aitor Karanka’s successor, but the Teessiders have continued to flatline. They have gone down with barely a whimper and Agnew has collected a meagre six points. They were poor against a weakened Saints line-up and it’s hard to see how Gibson can change Agnew with the task of trying to win promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Puel clearly feels he can’t play the same side in every game because of Saints’ run-in of five games in 14 days and made seven changes against Middlesbrough. Puel handed Martin Caceres his debut in the Uruguayan’s first appearance of the season and Jeremy Pied his first-ever start in his makeshift line-up. Jay Rodriguez made his first start since April 1 and crowned it by opening the scoring with his sixth goal of the season.

Austin was named in the Saints’ squad for the first time since December 8. The striker has been out all that time after dislocating his shoulder, which required surgery. Austin had bagged nine goals for Southampton before he was sidelined and he is still Saints’ leading scorer despite having not played for five months. Goals have been a real issue for Southampton and they finally ended their run of 312 minutes without scoring when Rodriguez netted.

Bamford was much coveted two seasons ago when he bagged 19 goals on loan at Middlesbrough. It’s been all downhill since, and he had unsuccessful loan spells at Crystal Palace and Norwich last season. He failed to start a game on loan at Burnley in the first half of this season before being sent packing by Sean Dyche. Boro paid Chelsea £6million for him in January and he finally bagged his first goal since April 2015 - or 760 days - on his first league start on his return to Boro.

Middlesbrough is not a happy place and the fans booed their team off at half-time as they trailed 1-0 to Southampton’s weakened side. The volume of jeers increased when Saints scored a second and the club is still badly split from Aitor Karanka’s sacking. Stewart Downing is seen by some fans as being partly responsible for Karanka’s demise and they roundly booed him when he came off on the hour mark. Some fans sang Karanka’s name near the end and this club needs to pull together if they are going to have a decent stab and winning promotion back to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Saints end drought with Boro win

Show/hide article…

Saints ended a 312 minute run without a goal as they defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium.

Claude Puel produced a shock team selection for his side’s final away game of the campaign and it paid off as they produced a 2-1 victory at already relegated Boro thanks to goals in either half from Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond.

The win briefly eases the pressure on Puel as his side go level on points with eighth placed West Brom.

Martin Caceres had an early taste of the action as he made sure he was in position to block Patrick Bamford’s effort on the turn in the box in the first minute of the game.

As the match settled it became clear that Puel’s surprise line-up had Oriol Romeu holding at the base of the midfield with Jordy Clasie and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ahead.

Jay Rodriguez spearheaded the attack, with Sofiane Boufal and Shane Long off of him on the left and right respectively.

However, they weren’t exactly on the front foot at the start of the match, which was bumbling along at a serene pace with both sides struggling to really impose themselves on the game as it turned into a scrappy midfield battle.

It took until 23 minutes for either side to have what might be deemed as a proper shot as Shane Long’s cross from the right came to Ryan Bertrand just inside the area.

He had to take it first time with his weaker right foot and it was scuffed harmlessly wide of the near post.

Boro had a sighter from a set piece as Romeu’s sliding challenge brought down Bamford as he hit a shot from outside the area straight at Fraser Forster.

Referee Anthony Taylor gave Boro the free kick but Alvaro Negredo’s shot hit the wall.

Boro had their best opening of the game on 27 minutes as Adam Forshaw swung in a cross from the left that was met by George Friend at the far post, but he headed down and wide.

Long and Rodriguez combined incisively for the first time four minutes later but the former’s attempted low ball across the area to find Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for a far post tap-in was intercepted by Boro keeper Brad Guzan.

Bertrand had a chance from a set-piece on 34 minutes as Clasie was brought down to win his side a free kick 25 yards out to the right of centre. However, the left back hit the wall.

There was a rare shot on target four minutes later as Hojbjerg struck a very optimistic long range free kick which ballooned up off the wall. Maya Yoshida headed it goalwards from 12 yards out but it was straight at Guzan who had a comfortable save.

The Saints supporters responded with a chant of ‘we’ve had a shot.’ The fans were in raptures, therefore, when Saints took the lead three minutes before half time.

It was a simple but well worked goal as Clasie played a ball down the right to Long, who expertly cut back a cross to Rodriguez.

The striker did the rest with a superb first time right footed sweeping finish from 12 yards out into the bottom corner.

Bofual had the final kick of the half as he got a free kick on target. It was an easy stop for Guzan but it was advantage Saints at the break.

Forshaw had an effort for Boro on the half volley from just outside the box three minutes after the restart but Hojbjerg deflected it wide.

Bamford should have done much better when he had the chance to hit a half volley after Stewart Downing headed back across goal but he failed to make any meaningful contact.

Boro paid the price as Saints were not so generous and doubled their lead on 58 minutes.

Some slick Saints passing and pitiful Boro defending allowed Redmond to get the ball on the right and cut inside and into the area. Under little pressure he lined up a right footed shot from 12 yards out and brilliantly curled it into the opposite top corner for 2-0.

Boro made a double change on the hour mark as Grant Leadbitter and Viktor Fischer replaced Forshaw and Downing.

Saints had the perfect chance to add another goal to their tally on 64 minutes as they were awarded a penalty.

Long was breaking into the area when Guzan dived in and brought him down.

Long stepped up to take it, gave it some welly but leant back and the ball clipped the top of the bar as it went over.

Redmond went close again four minutes later but from a tight angle put his effort over the top.

Boro got themselves back into it on 73 minutes with a goal from a corner.

Fischer put in a left wing inswinger and Bamford held off the attentions of Bertrand to head home from close range at the near post.

Puel threw on Steven Davis for Hojbjerg to try and shore things up.

Saints put their attacking ambitions somewhat to one side in the closing stages as they tried to ensure they took the three points home with them from the north east.

There was a welcome sight for Saints fans three minutes from time as Charlie Austin came on for his first appearance since injuring his shoulder in December, though somewhat sadder to see was Long having to limp off.

Calum Chambers hit a fierce drive from 20 yards that forced Forster into a save down to his right in four minutes of added time but the Saints keeper made a solid stop.

Rodriguez had an opportunity for another goal moments later but missed the target from the edge of the area.

However, it didn’t matter as Saints ended their run without a win and a goal by securing the three points in their final away game of the season.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Visitors hang on for first win in a month

Show/hide article…

Southampton survived a late Middlesbrough fightback to earn a 2-1 victory at the Riverside Stadium.

Three minutes before the end of a scrappy first half, Jay Rodriguez got on the end of a pinpoint Shane Long cross to fire his side into the lead, but it was the second 45 minutes where the best of the action took place.

Firstly, Nathan Redmond scored a fine second in the 57th minute, before Long wasted a golden chance to put the game to bed seven minutes later, blazing a penalty over the bar.

It looked like that miss could prove to be pivotal as Patrick Bamford headed his first-ever Premier League goal to get Boro back in it with 18 minutes remaining, but the home side couldn’t muster an equaliser as their final home game ended in disappointment.

The result means Middlesbrough are guaranteed to finish with their lowest Premier League points total, while Saints moved level on points with West Brom in eighth after a first success since April 8.

Saints made seven changes to the side that were beaten by Arsenal in midweek, handing full debuts to Martin Caceres and Jeremy Pied, with the former called into action very early on to block well from Bamford.

The hosts showed why they came into this encounter with just one win in their last 19 league games as they offered next to no threat to Fraser Forster’s goal in the first half.

Down the other end, Long was proving to be a real handful down the channels, and he almost created an opening in the 32nd minute, but Brad Guzan was down well to cut out the Saints forward’s low cross.

It wasn’t long before Saints did put a telling move together, though, with Long at the heart of it once more. Jordy Clasie fed the Saints forward down the right channel, Long looked up, picked out the run of Rodriguez perfectly, and the former Burnley hitman fired home on the half volley.

Boro came out with added impetus after the break, and went close to an equaliser just minutes into the half, but Adam Forshaw saw his goal-bound strike deflected wide.

Bamford wasted another chance to equalise when he sliced into the roof of the net, before Redmond made the hosts pay for their lack of potency, ruthlessly curling into the top corner after striding into the box, taking advantage of some slack Boro marking.

Then came the moment that should have sealed the three points for Claude Puel’s men. Long was always beating Guzan to the long ball, with the Boro stopper clumsy as he went to ground, upending Long and gifting the Saints forward the chance to get himself on the scoresheet from the spot.

Long sent Guzan the wrong way, but got underneath his spot-kick, firing over, clipping the bar en route.

Five minutes later and Boro were back in it. Substitute Viktor Fischer curled a perfect corner into the middle, Bamford stood his ground and diverted the ball home, with the side of his head. Whether he knew much about it is a different matter, but after more than two years without a goal, he won’t mind.

The goal did rouse the Teessiders to try snatch an unlikely point, with Forster forced into a fine stop to deny Calum Chambers in stoppage time, but Saints held on for the three points.

Rodriguez: That’s an important win

Show/hide article…

As well as putting a top-ten finish firmly in Saints’ sights, Rodriguez felt it was crucial to win after the manager made seven changes to the starting eleven.

“It was important to win the game,” started Rodriguez.

“We had a lot of change in the team today and I think that all of the lads that came in did really well, so it’s an important win.

“We have good lads in this team who get their heads down and work hard, and I think that really showed today.”

Rodriguez, who was one of those seven changes, gave Saints the lead on the 42nd minute at the Riverside.

And the 27-year-old felt that, with the way the game was going, it was an important time to score.

“I think it came at the crucial time,” he continued.

“We found it hard at times to break Middlesbrough down, but it was a great ball from Longy into the box for me.

“It was a good time to score because I think it settled us down just in time to control the rest of the game.”

Boro win a good reward for the players, says Puel

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond fired Saints ahead before they were then forced to withstand a late surge of pressure following Patrick Bamford’s header.

“It’s a good result,” Puel started.

“I think we can finish the game with the penalty and then after that it was a bit difficult because the other players perhaps believed it wasn’t finished.

“We lost, perhaps, a bit of the concentration in our game so it was difficult with the long play that we faced after that.

“But it was important to take the three points for the squad because it is a good reward for all of the players.”

Puel made seven changes to the side that suffered midweek defeat against Arsenal at St Mary’s.

And he was delighted with the performances he saw from players that have not featured so heavily this season.

“I am happy with the players that haven’t had a lot of game time over the last few weeks,” he continued.

“Today allowed them to show their qualities and let them play in a serious game with good consideration and focus.

“This is very interesting for them and for the team. I was confident with all of these players because I have seen on the training ground the work they can do.”

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Puel hails Saints spirit

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted his side’s win against Middlesbrough was a victory for the entire squad as his big selection gamble paid off.

Puel made seven changes to the Saints team to face Boro, handing first starts to Martin Caceres and Jeremy Pied and recalling the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Shane Long and Jordy Clasie.

It worked a treat as Saints ended a 312 minute goal drought to win 2-1 in their final away game of the season.

Puel said: “The goals and the wins and the result of course because it was very important for us.

“This good result also gives a good reward for all the squad, a good answer, because it was important to give opportunities to some players and for others to recover.

“To have the possibility to play the last three games with good energy, possibilities and physically fit.

“I don’t know now for the last two games but it was important for the first.

“I am happy for the squad because it was not just a win. It was a win for the squad because all the players can give a good answer and it is important to recover some players but also see other players like Martin Caceres, Jeremy Pied, Charlie, Rodriguez, Long, Hojbjerg, Clasie.

“All these players deserve game time because they work very hard in training sessions and we can see this on the pitch.

“This is an important reward for all the squad.”

Saints are level on points with West Brom and have the chance to finish eighth with a strong finale.

“The motivation we know and we show the motivation of the team with all these games with a good attitude,” insisted Puel.

“Just perhaps against Hull City it was without the good intensity and rhythm but all the games we can play with good quality, spirit and intensity and this is very important.

“It is interesting at the end of the season to see this attitude and of course we have got to try and finish in the first half of the table.

“It will be a good reward for the team and for the good work I think we can do since the beginning of the season.”

Eden Hazard insists Claude Puel is one of the ‘top managers’ amid Southampton sack reports

Eden Hazard insists Claude Puel is up there with the best managers in the game and has credited him with a hand in making the attacker the player he is today.

Southampton boss Puel is reportedly under threat of the sack in the close season, with The Independent claiming the Saints have sounded out Hull manager Marco Silva as a potential successor.

Puel’s Saints beat Middlesbrough 2-1 on Saturday to lift themselves back into the Premier League’s top half with a game to go, and title winner Hazard puts the Frenchman in the same bracket as Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Roberto Martinez.

“Conte is on the top but [Belgium boss] Roberto is also on the top, but I worked with him just for one year,” Hazard told Sky Sports News HQ.

"Mourinho is also on the top. He’s a great manager. I try to learn from all managers. I don’t like to say one is good or one is bad. All can teach me a lot.

“I even spent two months with Claude Puel in Lille. He is one of the top also, because he maybe made me this player I am now. I like to work with different managers.”

Hazard, who has scored 16 goals in 40 appearances for the champions this season, has also hailed Conte’s hands-on approach this season as the Blues lifted a second Premier League trophy in three years.

He said: “It’s more Conte [than anyone else]. He does maybe everything. He is talking a lot with the players, even though English is his second language. He has his own philosophy and tactics.”

Middlesbrough 1-2 Southampton: Claude Paul praises Saints in strength in depth after win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel hailed the strength of his squad after his much-changed Southampton side earned a 2-1 win at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Puel made seven changes to the Saints starting XI that were beaten by Arsenal in midweek, with Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic left out of the squad altogether for the trip to the north east.

However, the changes didn’t have any detrimental effect, as goals from Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond gave Saints the platform to go on to earn three points.

“I said before the game that I have faith in the players,” Puel told Sky Sports. "Perhaps it is a risk to make seven changes, but if we want to win the last three games then it was important for me to make sure we keep good energy for every game.

"I am happy for the squad. There were many players who had not had much game time in the last few weeks, but they showed they can do good things and have quality. It was important to make sure we kept this result. We showed that Southampton is not just eleven players, it is a squad.

“It as great to see Charlie [Austin] back, have Jeremy [Pied] back at this level - more players that we could give game time too.”

The margin of victory could have been more comfortable, but Shane Long blazed a second-half penalty over the bar before Patrick Bamford gave the home side hope with a late header.

“In the second half, it was a good opportunity to finish the game with the penalty,” Puel added. "But without scoring, it gave Middlesbrough the belief that they could come back.

“In the second half we could have managed the game a little better, but I think that, in general, we did some really fantastic work and we are happy to get some players back.”
