Jose Mourinho has called for his players to show a good attitude in the final two Premier League games of the season.

United can no longer obtain a place in the UEFA Champions League through their league position and Mourinho has spoken openly about a desire to keep players fresh for their UEFA Europa League final against Ajax.

He said: "Team spirit, empathy and the fantastic attitude that everybody has is not one more victory, one more point, one more defeat that is going to change something. A final is a final and we have to go to the final with everything like Ajax does because they have finished the season and they do not any more football until then.

“What I want for the players is a good attitude, is a positive attitude, a positive approach, is team spirit, is understanding that some guys they have to sacrifice themselves for the good of others.”

Defender Chris Smalling has also called upon his teammates to build crucial momentum in the final two games.

Smalling told manutd.com: “The beauty of having these two games, with the preparation we’ve got, means we can go into the final firing on all cylinders and with everyone completely up to speed. We’re ready for everything.

"I don’t think it’s a case of taking it easy in the Premier League. You can’t shy away from the final but, in the same respect, in training and during games, we’ll want to make an impression on the manager. “

Southampton and Manchester United face-off in what is every bit the end of season Premier League dead-rubber.

The Saints are comfortably ensconced in mid-table, while United now cannot qualify for the Champions League through their league placing.

Southampton vs Manchester United kicks off at 7.45pm BST.

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 from 7.30pm BST.

The home side come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win at relegated Middlesbrough, a result that lifted the Saints to ninth in the table. Goals by Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond ensured Claude Puel’s team found the net for the first time in four matches, increasing hopes of a fourth successive top-half finish.

Virgil van Dijk and Alex McCarthy are the only absentees in an otherwise fully fit squad at the French manager’s disposal.

The Red Devils arrive on the south coast with precious little to play for after defeat against Tottenham on Sunday ended their faint hopes of a top four finish. Manager Jose Mourinho made it clear even before the match with Spurs that United’s main priority is the Europa League final with Ajax.

As such, the Portuguese is likely to rest several of his key players on Wednesday and in Sunday’s final Premier League match of the season against Crystal Palace.

Anthony Martial: Amid speculation he could be sold in the summer, the forward produced a bright display in defeat to Spurs and will probably feature again here.

If he can deliver the goods once more, he may cement a place in Mourinho’s Europa League final plans.

Paul Pogba is on compassionate leave following the death of his father on Friday while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo (both knee), Ashley Young (hamstring), Luke Shaw (foot) and Tim Fosu-Mensah (shoulder) are out through injury.

In truth, Wednesday night’s fixture is a dead rubber for United as they are guaranteed to finish the season in sixth place.

That means Mourinho may experiment with his line-up on south coast.

Puel: It’s not about revenge

Saints were beaten in cruel fashion by José Mourinho’s side at Wembley earlier in the season, as Zlatan Ibrahimović’s late header gave United a 3-2 win.

While tomorrow night’s Premier League fixture at St Mary’s might bring memories of that day in February back to the fore, Puel insisted it is not on his mind.

“It’s not a case of revenge, because it’s been a long time now and it’s important to stay focused just about this game,” he said.

"Manchester play every three days, and for us it’s the same thing in these last games. It’s important to stay with a good way, with a good opportunity to enjoy our football and to make happy our fans. This is the most important thing.

“It’s not about revenge. It was another game, it’s not the Premier League, and this is finished.”

While United have the Europa League final to think about next week, Puel does not expect Mourinho to field a weakened team.

“They can make some rotation and many changes every game,” he said. "For example, against us, I think we will see on the pitch the likes of Pogba, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Rashford and all these great players, because they recover the last game and, with their squad, they can put on the pitch fantastic players.

“We’re going to play against a strong team, this is for sure.”
