Paul Pogba ruled out for Manchester United to attend father’s funeral

Show/hide article…

Manchester United are likely to be without Paul Pogba for their penultimate Premier League match of the season at Southampton as he attends his father’s funeral.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s father Fassou Antoine died on Friday and the France international, who already missed Sunday’s match at Tottenham, is on compassionate leave and expected to be absent for the match at St Mary’s on Wednesday as he returns to his home country to pay his respects.

United boss Jose Mourinho said: "I don’t think (he will be available). I think that his dad’s funeral has to be between Tuesday and Wednesday in France.

“I don’t think that Paul has the conditions to play. We have left him completely free to be back when he thinks he’s ready.”

Mourinho already has to do without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Tim Fosu-Mensah for his side’s remaining league matches through injury.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese says United’s “crazy” schedule is taking its toll mentally and physically ahead of the Europa League final, leaving them facing a fixture pile-up unlike anything he has experienced.

Next week the Reds head to Sweden to take on Ajax looking to win the only major trophy to have eluded them in their success-laden history.

Europa League glory also offers qualification for the Champions League - the only way they can return to the continent’s top table after Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Tottenham officially put a top-four finish out of reach.

Mourinho has prioritised European success for several weeks now and, like at Spurs, plans to rotate his squad at Southampton, then again in Sunday’s Premier League finale at home to Crystal Palace.

Balancing the desire to win with resting players has been difficult, and Mourinho said: "The accumulation of the games, I never had that.

"You know that in all of my career I was never (knocked) out of European competitions in the group phases and in the last 16 I was out only once.

"So I reached the semi-finals 10 times, I go always until the end of the competitions.

"In the League Cup I normally go far. In the domestic competitions cups, I won in Spain, in Italy, in Portugal so I normally have a lot of matches. But like this I never have, I never have.

“This situation of you play a final and the game that you should play that day is going to be postponed until the last week, for the last week! This is crazy.”

Puel: We’ve got a platform to build from

Show/hide article…

Saints finish the campaign with a pair of home games, beginning with the visit of United to St Mary’s this evening, with Puel knowing maximum points will secure eighth place.

He believes the win at Boro has positioned them well in that sense, but also because his seven changes at the Riverside Stadium means there is a freshness about his squad ahead of the final two games.

“It was important to take three points,” said Puel. "It was an opportunity also to see different players who have not had a lot of game time, and it was important to recover some players, and I think we can now play the last two games with good energy and freshness, and I hope a good intensity in the game.

"The last result allows us the possibility to see these games with a good future. It’s a good opportunity for us to finish with two games at home and to enjoy our fans also.

“I think it’s a good thing and I hope we can produce two good games and a good result in the end.”

Saints represented at Rainbow Laces summit

Show/hide article…

Southampton Football Club was represented at Stonewall’s inaugural Rainbow Laces summit at Old Trafford this week, as part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups feel welcome at St Mary’s.

The event was run by the charity, which promotes equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and focused on tackling homophobic abuse in football and creating an atmosphere where gay players feel more comfortable talking openly about their sexuality.

FA chairman Greg Clarke spoke at the summit about the challenges the men’s game faces and used the atmosphere he witnessed at the Women’s FA Cup final last weekend as a positive example.

“I was at the Women’s FA Cup final and it was great, inclusive – there were gay people, straight people, transgender people, and it was a wonderful occasion,” Clarke said.

“It is about when the men’s game starts to feel as inclusive as the women’s game – then we are there.”

Supporter Relations Manager Khali Parsons represented Saints at the summit and found the event extremely useful.

She said: “It was great to attend the first event of this kind and be among so many other sporting organisations who are putting LGBT fan engagement at the top of their priority list.

“Also, the chance to learn more about the experiences of high-performing sports people and LGBT supporter groups was extremely valuable.

“I’d actively encourage any of our LGBT fans and staff who would like to champion this great cause to get in touch so we can really drive this agenda forward as a club.””

Saints supported the Rainbow Laces campaign earlier this season, in their home game against Everton, with a series of initiatives.

As part of the club’s One March campaign, launched earlier this season, we take a zero tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination, so if you see, hear or are subjected to discriminatory abuse at St Mary’s, please report it to your nearest steward, or contact our Supporter Relations Team on 02380 711980 or via supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk.

Southampton vs Manchester United live stream details

Show/hide article…

Manchester Unite d make the trip to the south coast on Wednesday night looking to end their poor recent domestic record.

Jose Mourinho has prioritised the Europa League with United taking on Ajax in Stockholm next week.

But their Premier League form hasn’t been good enough, winning just one of their last four matches.

That means they cannot finish any higher than sixth and for United, that just isn’t good enough.

Can they get back to winning ways against Southampton ?

Here is all you need to know ahead of the encounter.

The clash is on Wednesday May 17 with a 7:45pm kick-off.

It will be shown live on Sky Sports 1, with coverage getting underway at 7:30pm.

Southampton have no fresh injury worries as they continue their push for a top-eight Premier League finish against Manchester United at St Mary’s on Wednesday.

Virgil van Dijk has returned to training and is running again as he recovers from a foot injury, but the Dutch centre-half remains sidelined for their final two games of the season.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) is also back in training but is not available to feature against Manchester United.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is planning changes for a trip to Southampton that Paul Pogba is set to miss.

Daley Blind will be among those rested at St Mary’s but Marouane Fellaini is available for Wednesday’s Premier League match after serving a three match-ban.

Pogba is on compassionate leave following the death of his father on Friday, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo (both knee), Ashley Young (hamstring), Luke Shaw (foot) and Tim Fosu-Mensah (shoulder) are out through injury.

Sky Sports customers can live stream the match via SkyGo on supported mobile devices.

Vokins and England into U17 Euro final

Show/hide article…

The Young Lions edged out Turkey 2-1 in their semi-final on Tuesday night, setting up a showdown with Spain for the title on Friday, in Croatia.

Vokins was an unused substitute for the latest match, as coach Steve Cooper named an unchanged side.

Callum Hudson-Odoi put England ahead after 11 minutes when he ran on to Jadon Sancho’s pass, and it was Sancho who then turned scorer in the 37th minute, as he finished off Phil Foden’s pass.

Kerem Kesgin scored deep into added time at the end of the first half to pull Turkey back into it, but England were able to see things out after the break.

‘Saints want everyone to showcase their ability’

Show/hide article…

“I had a few struggles when I was younger,” says Martin Sinclair. "I got cerebral palsy on my left-hand side, and no-one really knew what cerebral palsy or the disability was.

“All I ever wanted to do was play football like every other kid. It wasn’t about winning or losing, it was just taking part and having a smile on my face.”

Martin - the brother of former Swansea City midfielder Scott Sinclair - spent three-and-a-half years in a wheelchair after an accident on a slide at the age of 15, and was in and out of hospital for nearly eight years.

But he went on to represent Great Britain’s cerebral palsy team, winning a bronze medal at the 2010 Paralympic World Cup and a silver in 2012. He also represented GB at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Now retired, the 30-year-old is working with Southampton’s Saints Foundation, helping to deliver the SaintsAbility programme as a development officer.

The initiative, supported by the Premier League & BT Disability Sport scheme, offers regular football sessions for people of all ages with physical and cognitive impairments, currently engaging more than 250 children and adults.

“Disability can happen at any time, at any point, to anyone,” he told southamptonfc.com. "If we set the groundwork now, like the Saints Foundation is doing, then if people do have a disability we’ve created a platform for them just to play football.

"We’ve teamed up with the Hampshire FA because there wasn’t a pan-disability league in Southampton.

"We want to give everyone a chance to showcase their ability. There’s no such word as ‘can’t’ there’s always hope that you can.

“When they cross that white line you don’t see a disability. You just see people having fun, scoring goals, passing. That’s what it’s all about - that opportunity, and being more inclusive.”

Martin’s story is part of the Saints Together campaign, which highlights the connection between the club, the Foundation and the community.
