Three Premier League clubs chasing transfer of Algerian winger Ryan Boudebouz

Show/hide article…

Southampton, Everton and Newcastle are battling to bring Ryad Boudebouz to the Premier League.

The top-fight trio are challenging Lyon and Lazio for the Algerian winger who is set to leave Montpellier this summer.

Boudebouz has scored 11 and set up nine goals this season is valued at £13million by his French club.

As an international, the 27-year-old has played for Algeria on 24 occasions, including appearing at the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

Boudebouz could have moved to the Premier League when he played for Sochaux in 2012, but talks with Liverpool broke down.

Confirming their interest at the time, he said: “Certainly, my agent is in talks with some clubs, particularly in France, but there is still nothing concrete.

"There is also Liverpool, who have initiated discussions with my agent, but at the risk of repeating myself, everything is in the discussion stage, no more.”

Puel not seeking United revenge

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel says his side are not seeking to avenge their EFL Cup final defeat when they host Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

Saints narrowly lost 3-2 at Wembley in February, but Puel says he is not interesting in paying Manchester United back for that loss.

“It’s not a case of revenge, because it’s been a long time now and it’s important to stay focused just about this game,” Puel told southamptonfc.com. “It’s important to stay with a good way, with a good opportunity to enjoy our football and to make happy our fans.”

Options for Puel, Southampton to jump-start attack this summer

Show/hide article…

When it comes to their team missing chances, Claude Puel and Jose Mourinho could compare hard-luck stories when they share a touchline at the St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday.

Manchester United’s failure to finish in the Premier League top four has been largely down to their remarkable inability to put the ball in the net – especially at Old Trafford – while Puel is never reluctant to point out Southampton have had more misplaced shots than any other team this season.

As Mourinho plots to bring in Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann to remedy his team’s prolifigacy, what options does Puel have – assuming he dodges the sack – this summer to find the magic formula to turn those spurned opportunities into goals?

The 21-year-old looked like he would be the next big talent to emerge out of Southampton’s world-famous youth academy when he burst onto the scene at the back end of the 2014-15 season.

Gallagher followed in the footsteps of England legend Alan Shearer by making his Premier League debut against Arsenal and netted his maiden goal a few weeks later in a win against Norwich.

But Puel’s predecessor, Ronald Koeman, never really fancied Gallagher and shipped him out on loan to MK Dons last season.

Gallagher has been out on loan again and was a regular scorer in a struggling Blackburn team.

The 6-foot-4 Gallagher also appears to have worked hard on his physique and upper-body strength and will feel he deserves the chance to prove his worth to Puel.

Defoe will be one of the most sought after free transfers of the summer following Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League.

The England man may be in the veteran stage of his career but showed he can still cut it at the top level by almost single-handedly trying to save Sunderland from relegation.

His goals return in a woeful side should be enough to earn him another top-flight club, but Saints would be reluctant to meet his £75,000-a-week pay demands and may also be wary how the signing would be received by their supporters given his Portsmouth connections.

Southampton are reportedly keen to bring the exciting, if raw, 20-year-old to the south coast on a year’s loan.

Iheanacho has impressed playing against Southampton in each of the past two seasons and has all the attributes needed to be a future Premier League star: blistering pace, an eye for goal and the fearlessness of youth.

The move would suit both parties as Southampton would be getting a quality player for a relatively modest loan fee and Manchester City need the Nigerian to get precious game time away from the Etihad where he has Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus blocking his path.

Iheanacho would also fit perfectly into Saints’ 4-2-3-1 formation either as an out-and-out striker or in any of the three attacking midfield positions

Southampton’s revolutionary black box scouting system has unearthed some hidden gems in recent summers.

From Sadio Mane to Manolo Gabbiadini, they have become the masters at finding untapped talent.

Puel obviously has a good knowledge of the French league so it would be no surprise to see him look to Ligue 1; with Nice’s Alessane Plea a potential target.

  1. Stick with what he has and hire a striker coach

It is not as if Southampton do not have a wealth of high-calibre attackers on their books.

Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini, Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez have all shown in spurts they can get goals in the Premier League, but they need to do it on a more consistent basis.

Puel’s strength as a coach is on the defensive side of the game, so hiring a helping hand to work with his misfiring forwards could be a shrewd move.

Southampton to review Claude Puel’s future - ‘We need to move with whatever is best for the club’

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is receiving no reassurances about his Southampton future ahead of an end-of-season review next week after which a final decision will be made about the first-team manager.

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has told The Telegraph that executive director Les Reed will lead an analysis of the campaign once the final two games – against Manchester United tonight and Stoke City on Sunday – have been completed.

Although Southampton reached the League Cup final and could still finish eighth, many supporters are frustrated with the style of football and the situation appears increasingly ominous.

“We have two huge games ahead of us,” said Krueger. “I think all of that should be properly debriefed, analysed next week and then we need to move with whatever is best for the club at that point. We want everybody to be really focussed on finishing strong.”

Claude Puel: Southampton don’t want revenge for EFL Cup defeat against Man United

Show/hide article…

Despite being the better team in February’s EFL Cup final, Saints slumped to a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired United at Wembley.

But Puel said: “It’s a long time since the final and this is another game. It’s not about revenge. It is important to keep energy and enjoy our football and just focus on this and nothing else.

“Our last result against Middlesbrough allows us the opportunity to finish the season strongly and that is our only motivation.”

Mourinho has made eight changes for each of the last two Premier League games to try and keep his star men fit for next week’s Europa League final with Ajax in Stockholm.

And Puel, who has also earned the reputation of being a tinkerman, said: “I appreciate Jose Mourinho.

“He can do fantastic work with Manchester United and they have many solutions to play a strong team with the squad he has.

Southampton boss backs Mourinho making huge changes for United pre-Europa final

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has given Jose Mourinho’s squad rotation policy the thumbs up ahead of Manchester United’s trip to play his Southampton side.

United manager Mourinho has been criticised for making eight changes for each of their last two league games to try to ensure his stars are fit and fresh for next Wednesday’s Europa League final against Ajax.

Between them, the two clubs meeting at St Mary’s on Wednesday night have racked up 112 games this season.

Saints manager Puel said of his Old Trafford counterpart: “Jose have many solutions to play a strong team with the squad he has.

"Against us he can play Marcus Rashford and Henrik Mkhitaryan, because they were all rested for the last game.

“Mourinho tries some changes because with all these games it important to keep fresh, and it was the same for us in the first half of the season.”

This is the first meeting between the clubs since Saints’ gut-wrenching 3-2 EFL Cup final defeat to United at Wembley in February when they had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside before conceding a late winner, but Puel insists he is not out for payback.

Puel said: “It’s a long time since the final and this another game. It’s not about revenge.

"It is important to keep energy and enjoy our football and just focus on this and nothing else.

“Our last result, [a 2-1 win] against Middlesbrough, allows us the opportunity to finish the season strongly and that is our only motivation.

“We want to end up as high in the table as we can.”

Southampton FC news: Chairman Ralph Krueger discusses futures of Claude Puel and Virgil van Dijk, claiming Saints ‘do not need to sell any player’

Show/hide article…

Ralph Krueger insists Southampton will no longer be bullied in the transfer market - but the chairman was not so forthright about manager Claude Puel’s future.

For the past seven seasons Saints have managed to finish higher than the previous campaign, a run made all the more remarkable by the revolving door at St Mary’s.

Southampton’s run of beating the previous year’s finish has ended this season, but there is no end in sight to the speculation surrounding key players.

Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu are the latest targets as vultures circle overhead, although chairman Krueger has pledged this summer will be different to previous years.

Welcomed by a small squad on “extremely weak contracts” upon his appointment during the 2013-14 season, the chairman said they needed to sell astutely and buy even smarter to build.

That money has allowed the club to give the club strength with contracts, meaning they do not plan to sell any of the crown jewels.

“Here we sit in the summer of '17 and we now have 18 top, or above average, Premier League players under three or more year contracts,” Krueger said.

"We actually have 12 players that have more than four years, so 49 months, left on their contract and even a couple with 61 months.

"So 18 players have more than three years, gives us control over the summer for the first time.

"We will decide if anybody goes and we will decide who comes in, in the best interests of the club.

"We do not need to sell any player for the first time since I’ve been here.

"I can make that statement and - unless football decides it’s in the best interests - we don’t need to do that.

"I think that we’re moving into a new era at Southampton Football Club after three-and-a-half years of building this foundation of depth, where we have more than 25 players that can play a Premier League game.

"We now need to consolidate. We’re going to do everything possible to keep the core in place because the one thing that has been lacking here is developing synergies within the squad because of the changes.

"It has been difficult to maintain the synergies we would see at times during the season.

“I think that’s one of the reasons we would like to keep the core in place to give the synergies an opportunity, and we are extremely hungry to push back into Europe next year. It is our obsession.”

This season’s Europa League campaign, no matter how frustrating, has whetted the collective appetite at St Mary’s, so too the EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

Star turn Van Dijk was absent at Wembley through injury, just as he continues to be now - not that speculation over a summer move has halted.

Asked if Saints could realistically turned down a £60million bid for him this summer, Krueger said: "Can we? Yes.

"The big thing is here again I want to underline the strategy, less the detail.

"You know I really respect our lead in football, Les Reed is doing an excellent job, and Ross Wilson has taken on a big role assisting Les and leading our football-specific decisions.

"They will continue next week once they’ve analysed the season and really de-brief completely, they will make then the football decision we need to make.

“I’ll tell you again, we do not need to sell anybody.”

Krueger says the club’s hunger for European qualification outweighs “hunger to set some record (sale)” and that any moves made will be because it is better for Southampton.

While player speculation is sure to rumble, so too will the talk about manager Puel’s future.

The man chosen to succeed Ronald Koeman last summer has struggled to win over fans - and it is understood some players - with Krueger giving a non-committal answer amid growing chatter of a managerial change.

“In my role as a chairman, I like to have people expecting more and wanting growth and wanting development because that’s what we are expecting from ourselves and that’s what we are expecting within our staff,” he said when asked about frustrated supporters ahead of Wednesday’s match against Manchester United.

"Again, the football analysis, let it take place when these games are over.

"We have two really important matches - what a beautiful thing to finish the season with two home games in five days, so right now we want to celebrate the moment.

"The bigger picture football-wise will become transparent as we move into next week and the week beyond.

"It hasn’t been easy either to come in here as a manager, finishing eighth, seventh, sixth.

“It was definitely tough circumstances with Europe and we’ll be looking at everything, and then we’ll again be clearer after the season’s over.”

Puel’s future hangs in the balance

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s future as Saints manager is set to be decided by an internal end of season review at St Mary’s.

The Frenchman has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks with growing speculation that he could be sacked just a year into his three-year contract.

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger refused to say that Puel would still be in charge next season.

Instead, he insisted the decision will be taken by the football management staff, led by Les Reed and Ross Wilson.

Krueger said: “Since the beginning of my time here any players, managers, it’s a football analysis which happens at the beginning of next week and I don’t want to take anything away from that analysis.

“Right now we are still fighting this season, we are an extremely focussed group and don’t judge before.

“The white noise whether it’s been around ownership, the white noise whether it’s been around players or the manager has really been quite ignored for us as far as staying on the job.

“Once the job is done after the Stoke game it will be up to football to do a debrief and give transparency to our plans.

“I of course on a personal level have a high respect and have enjoyed the season with Claude. We have all experienced ups and downs and no one person in this club is responsible for anything.

“We always look at the whole and football will do that at the end of the season.”
