Saints see off Boro

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez’s sweetly-struck effort in the first half put Saints ahead, before Nathan Redmond’s glorious curling effort doubled the lead after the break, and although Patrick Bamford’s header set up a nervy finish, Claude Puel’s side were excellent value for the three points.

There were sweeping changes to the Southampton line-up at the Riverside Stadium, as Puel made seven alterations to the side that lost at home to Arsenal in midweek.

Martín Cáceres was handed his Saints debut, while Jérémy Pied got a first start, with Jordy Clasie, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Sofiane Boufal, Rodriguez and Shane Long also coming in.

Maya Yoshida took on the captain’s armband, as Steven Davis dropped to the bench alongside Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Redmond.

Also among the subs were Charlie Austin and Matt Targett, as they ended a significant number of months out with injury, while Cédric, Dušan Tadić and Manolo Gabbiadini did not make the squad.

Cáceres made a key contribution just 55 seconds into his first Saints appearance, as he put in a superb block to deny Bamford, who had controlled a looping ball into the area and spun to create space to shoot from close range.

Chances were hard to come by for either side after that, though.

Ryan Bertrand was presented with an opening in the 23rd minute when Long’s low ball from the right squeezed its way through to him, but he couldn’t make the correct connection on his less-favoured right foot.

George Friend then headed wide of the near post at the other end shortly afterwards, after Adam Forshaw’s cross had found him.

Both sides then wasted good opportunities from well-positioned free-kicks, while the biggest threat either keeper had to deal with in the opening 40 minutes was Brad Guzan diving to intercept Long’s dangerous low ball across the face of goal.

Guzan could not prevent Long’s 42nd minute delivery being converted, though. The Saints forward was released down the right by Clasie, and he cut back a cross perfectly into the path of Rodriguez, who brilliantly slammed a low half-volley into the back of the net to put the visitors in front.

With a lead at the break, Puel opted to make his first change of the game, as Boufal was withdrawn for Redmond.

There was a nervy moment for Saints within moments of the restart, as Forshaw’s shot from just outside the area deflected narrowly wide.

Bamford then wasted a good opportunity in the 55th minute, as Álvaro Negredo’s header across the area picked him out, but he got under his left-footed shot and sliced it high and wide.

Boro were made to pay for that moments later, as Rodriguez’s pass found Redmond unmarked on the left edge of the area, and he cut inside sharply before bending a beautiful shot into the far top corner.

Saints then had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute, as Bertrand picked out the run of Long, who was upended in the area by a diving Guzan.

Long himself stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but, despite sending the Boro keeper the wrong way, he got too much air under his shot, with the ball clipping the crossbar and going over.

It would have set up a comfortable finish for Saints, but instead it would be a nervy one, as Bamford headed in a Viktor Fischer corner at the near post in the 73rd minute to make it 2-1.

Puel immediately reacted by sending on Davis in place of Højbjerg, while Austin was sent on for his first appearance since injuring his shoulder in December, as he replaced Long with four minutes to go.

Forster had to make a good save to deny ex-Saint Calum Chambers’ fierce effort as the clock ticked past 90 minutes, while Rodriguez then saw an effort deflected wide, before the final whistle went.

Yoshida: Stephens deserves award too

Show/hide article…

The pair have blossomed together at the back since the departure of José Fonte and injury to Virgil van Dijk saw them paired at the heart of defence.

Yoshida was part of the side that kept three clean sheets and earned eight Premier League points during April, but he felt Stephens had every right to take the latest award too.

“I understand people compare between me and another player, like José or Virgil, but I think we have done very well with Jack. I think he deserves to get this prize as well,” he said.

Arsenal v Sunderland to be shown live on

Show/hide article…

Arsenal’s crucial clash with Sunderland will now be shown live on Sky Sports 2 on Tuesday as the battle for the top four hots up.

The game at The Emirates, which Arsenal must win to keep any realistic hope of a top-four finish alive, is one of two games live on Sky Sports on Tuesday as our cameras are also at Manchester City’s match with West Brom, which is live on Sky Sports 1.

With the end of the season rapidly approaching, Sky Sports is the only place to watch live Premier League fixtures with games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday pencilled in for live coverage on a busy week of action.

It all kicks off with Monday Night Football for a title party at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea take on Watford. Also, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville will be in the studio to look back on what’s been another fantastic Premier League campaign.

After Tuesday’s double header, where the top-four picture will become clearer, Manchester United travel to Southampton on Wednesday in a repeat of this season’s EFL Cup final before Leicester City will look to continue their strong end-of-season form against Tottenham on Thursday. Both games are live on Sky Sports 1.

Sunday’s final day live fixtures will be announced after the results of Tuesday night’s games. All games kick-off simultaneously at 3pm.

Steven Davis taking plenty of positives from a long season

Show/hide article…

Southampton have reached a cup final, played European football and are pushing for an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, but club captain Steven Davis says they ‘all want more than that’.

Saints have remarkably finished in a higher position than the previous campaign for the last seven seasons - a run that is going to come to an end this term.

It was always going to be hard to better last year’s sixth-place finish, and potentially ending the campaign eighth is far from a disgrace, yet there is an undercurrent of dissatisfaction at St Mary’s.

Manager Claude Puel is under pressure despite reaching the EFL Cup final and leading his side in the Europa League, with Davis admitting there is a feeling of frustration.

Asked if the club was still upwardly mobile, he said: 'Yeah, I think so. I think there’s a lot of positives at the club. The foundations of the club are excellent.

'There’s always going to come a point where, after progressing from League One, when you continue on that upward curve, there’s going to come a point where it slows a little bit.

'And with changes throughout the team and the management over the last number of years, it’s been unbelievable that we’ve managed to keep that upwards curve.

'But if we go on and finish the season strongly and get ourselves in that eighth position, then we can look back it and say it’s been an okay season.

‘We got to the cup final, with European experience and a decent league position, but we all want more than that.’

Davis admits they have struggled to find the consistency of previous years, leading to a lot of frustrating matches.

Saints have, though, been without key men Charlie Austin and Virgil van Dijk for large chunks of the campaign, with speculation continuing that the latter could be the next star to leave.

Southampton have somehow managed to cope with the annual summer sales, with Davis unaffected by the talk about the future of team-mates and Puel.

‘I’ve been in the game long enough and, ever since I’ve come to the club, we’ve had speculation about the manager and players at different times,’ Davis said. 'That’s part and parcel of football.

'I think (the ability to cope with changes) is testament to the structure of the club and what they have in place.

'They are continually trying to think of ways to take the club forward and bring in players who are capable of doing that.

‘It’s always a blow whenever you lose some of your top players each summer and that’s been the case since I’ve been at the club, but we’ve managed to deal with that.’

Southampton reliant on solid foundations as summer of upheaval awaits

Show/hide article…

Another summer of upheaval awaits Southampton in the form of several key departures and increasing uncertainty over the future of manager Claude Puel, but Steven Davis is confident the Saints can deal with the latest mix of evolution and revolution.

Puel declined invitations to confirm whether he will be in charge at the start of next season, and the Frenchman’s insistence that he didn’t understand the question was more figurative than literal as he closes in on the club’s fourth successive top-half finish in the wake of reaching the League Cup final.

A campaign most of their rivals would welcome with open arms has failed to dampen talk of dressing room unrest at what has often been a stifling brand of football less than 12 months into Puel’s reign, coupled with suggestions of an approach for Marco Silva, the Hull head coach who was under consideration for the job last summer.

“Ever since I came here we’ve had speculation about the manager and players at different times,” Davis said.

Coveted defensive trio Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Bertrand and Jack Stephens seem increasingly likely to join the lengthy list of players sold at a handsome profit by a club whose academy system continues to produce a seemingly never-ending supply of talent to replenish the senior squad.

Southampton star admits he is not bothered about Claude Puel’s future

Show/hide article…

Puel refused to answer questions on his future after a first win in six eased the pressure on the Frenchman amid rumours of dressing room tension. Southampton have been linked with a move for Hull head coach Marco Silva despite Puel leading them to the EFL Cup final and the verge of a fourth straight top 10 Premier League finish. The 55-year-old is the fourth boss Davis has worked with in five seasons at St Mary’s, and the 32-year-old insisted: “The speculation over the manager has not really been hard to deal with. “I’ve been in the game long enough and ever since I came here we’ve had speculation about the manager and players at different times, it’s all part and parcel of it.

“The speculation over the manager has not really been hard to deal with” “It’s testament to the structure of the club and what they have in place that we deal with whatever happens and the foundations in place here are excellent. “There have been highs and lows this season but I just don’t think we’ve been able to get that same level of consistency that we’ve shown in the last couple of years. “With the changes throughout the team and the management over the last few years it’s been unbelievable that we’ve managed to keep that upwards curve. “We can finish as high as eighth and if we manage that we can reflect and say it’s been an okay season, but we all want more than that.”

Jay Rodriguez and sub Nathan Redmond thumped home confident strikes either side of half-time in front of England boss Gareth Southgate as the shot-shy Saints found the net for the first time in more than five hours. Shane Long blazed over from the spot after he was brought down by keeper Brad Guzan, before Patrick Bamford pulled one back for Boro with a late header from Viktor Fischer’s corner. It wasn’t enough for already doomed Boro, who’ve only Sunderland in the last five months en route to a swift return to the Championship. After what he described as the heartbreak of relegation, Boro chairman Steve Gibson revealed the search for a permanent new manager is well down the line.

Puel didn’t fear Boro backlash

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted he didn’t fear the criticism that would come his way if his shock team selection had backfired at Middlesbrough.

The Saints boss made seven changes for the trip to the Riverside Stadium, handing first starts to Martin Caceres and Jeremy Pied, and recalling others who have recently been on the fringes such as Jay Rodriguez, Shane Long and Jordy Clasie.

Had Saints lost the game then Puel would no doubt have been heavily criticised, but he was adamant that he had to do what he thought was correct and be strong enough to withstand the flack if it went wrong.

“I think it’s important always, in all situations, to keep the way. And the way for me was this,” insisted Puel.

“We wanted to have opportunities to win the three last games and we need change because we finished the last game with big tiredness and it was difficult and perhaps we would have lost today (if we kept the same team).

“After Manchester United and Stoke it would be the same because the same players cannot play with all this reason.

“When we played against Arsenal it was a strong game, against Liverpool it was fantastic work and all the players run a lot so they need to recover.

“With the schedule we play every three days until the end of the season and it is very difficult.

“I know people don’t know the possibility to make all these changes but the work in the first half of the season was all this because with all the many games we have in different competitions we made rotation with results and we continued with this work.

“It was important for the players to show their quality and their professional attitude.”

Davis: We want more

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis believes that an eighth placed finish and EFL Cup final appearance would be a respectable season for Saints – but insists the squad want more.

The Northern Ireland midfielder is hoping his side can finish the campaign well to overhaul West Brom and finish in eighth.

Most neutrals would regard that as a decent season for Saints, but Davis is adamant that inside the club the bar is set higher.

He said: “I think there a lot of positives at the club. The foundations of the club are excellent.

“There’s always going to come a point where after progressing from League One, when you continue on that upward curve, there’s going to come a point where it slows a little bit.

“And with changes throughout the team and the management over the last number of years, it’s been unbelievable that we’ve managed to keep that upwards curve.

“But if we go on and finish the season strongly and get ourselves in that eighth position, then we can look back it and say it’s been an OK season.

“We got to the Cup Final, with European experience and a decent league position, but we all want more than that."

It has been a season with a fair number of frustrations for Saints, but Davis thinks that minor details have been the issue rather than the bigger picture.

"Listen, there have been highs and lows, but I just don’t think we’ve been able to get that same level of consistency that we’ve shown in the last couple of years,” he reckoned.

"We’ve had other factors to deal with, with the cup run and Europe. I’m sure we will take the experience from it all and it will stand us in good stead in the future.

"There have been a lot of games where we’ve felt frustrated. There have been certain games where we have not hit the performance levels we would have liked. There have been certain games where we’ve played well, but not got the results we wanted.

“It’s small details that get you results over the course of a campaign, but we have to take the positives and we’ll take as much from this campaign as we can."

Davis also brushed off speculation over the future of manager Claude Puel, and refused to look to that as an excuse for any below par performances or results.

"Not really to be honest,” he said when asked whether it had been unsettling.

“I’ve been in the game long enough and ever since I’ve come to the club, we’ve had speculation about the manager and players at different times. That’s part and parcel of football."

THE VERDICT: Could Puel’s bottle save his job?

Show/hide article…

No matter what you think of Claude Puel, you have to say the guy has some bottle.

While it seems there is a bandwagon of people keen to force him out of his job at St Mary’s, he has not only faced up to speculation and criticism with dignity, but also a lot of courage.

Puel has perhaps been too stubborn at times this season – his refusal to ditch rotation at key moments of the Europa League campaign, and the amount of time he took to eventually change formation.

But right now it seems his head strong attitude and desire to stick by his beliefs is his greatest weapon.

To make seven changes for the game against Middlesbrough, to hand two players first starts for the club, to recall many players who have been left frustrated and marginalised of late, was brave.

If Saints would have lost, it would have looked like stupidity. Puel virtually admitted as much after the game.

But he had the courage of his convictions, even under the most exacting pressure he must have felt in his managerial career – which by the way includes regular Champions League experience with some very big clubs, thus not making him the clueless chancer some seem keen to portray.

Even after the game he remained reserved, but also defiant. This little spark of strength we are seeing now needs to stay for the future, not be extinguished if he gets the chance to continue into next season.

He has justified his record, and says he genuinely cannot understand why there is this is a clamour amongst some for his head.

Puel knows, and admits, things haven’t always been great this season.

But Saints may well finish eighth, despite the strength of the traditional top seven clubs – which was, after all, the best they did under Mauricio Pochettino.

They have got to a major domestic cup final, which they hadn’t managed since 2003.

Yes, the Europa League campaign was below par, and, yes, the football hasn’t always been that exciting, but Puel’s real problem has not been overall results, but how lopsided his team have been in terms of where they have achieved them.

Saints have an impressive away record and, indeed, have played some of their best stuff on the road this season.

At home they have struggled to break out of the kind of tactics that have been effective away from home, and, partly as a consequence, struggled to score goals.

No matter whether you are a manager or player, you want your best performances to come at home where you have 30,000 of your fans watching you every week rather than away, where you have a tiny fraction of that. It is so important to how your success or otherwise is viewed.

When you chuck into the mix that Saints have been missing their best player in Virgil van Dijk, and their main goalscorer in Charlie Austin, for half of the season, and yet they still could finish as ‘best of the rest’, Puel has a point about the effectiveness of his first year at St Mary’s.

He has also developed the club’s young players, as requested, and worked within means and a tight budget, as requested.

Puel has also had to deal with being the only man at St Mary’s front and centre while frustrations over a lack of clarity as to the future off the club away from the pitch have spilled over.

There clearly would have to be progress next season from Puel if he is to stay, it would have to be better than it has been, but you find yourself wondering which manager Saints could have recruited last summer would have achieved all that much more in this campaign?

A bit more, perhaps. A bit worse, perhaps. But Puel’s efforts, on paper even if not always in feeling, seem in the right ball park.

The much changed Saints side put up in a good away performance at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro are pretty awful, hence their relegation, but they still needed beating and were clearly keen for a pressure off finale in front of their own fans.

Saints were solid, compact, well drilled, to a man they worked hard and, despite the reports of unrest, looked together and spirited.

If this was Puel challenging fringe players to go out there and prove why they should be playing, it was good management because it had the desired effect.

The match was not one full of incident, or a great deal of excitement, but Saints clearly had more quality and broke the deadlock three minutes before half time with a well worked goal.

Jordy Clasie played the ball down the right to Shane Long. He cut back to Jay Rodriguez and the striker swept home a wonderful first time right footed finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Puel, often criticised for substitutions, made a decisive change at the break, introducing Nathan Redmond for Sofiane Boufal.

Redmond was really on song, and ended a slick Saints passing move by cutting in from the left and curling a right footed shot into the opposite top corner for 2-0 on 57 minutes.

It would have been game over seven minutes later had Shane Long not leant back and seen his spot kick clip the top of the bar and sail over when leathering a penalty which he had won after being brought down by Brad Guzan.

The let-off gave Boro a bit of impetus for a final rally in their last home game of the season, and they grabbed a goal back from a set-piece as Patrick Bamford held off Ryan Bertrand to head home a Viktor Fischer inswinging corner from close range.

However, Saints were not to be beaten and did all they needed to to return home with the three points.

It was a victory for the squad, and just reward after battling and spirited displays against Liverpool and Arsenal which yielded just one point.

It was also a victory for Puel, who admirably remains determined to do things his way, even under extreme pressure.

If he can see out this situation, and he is backed going forward, his position will be so much stronger for it.
