Premier League results: Chelsea held by Leicester, West Ham thump Huddersfield, and Watford come from behind to draw

Show/hide article…

Chelsea endured a third successive goalless draw in an enthralling encounter against excellent 10-man Leicester.

Antonio Conte had been wary of the Foxes and his concern proved well founded as the movement and energy of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki troubled Chelsea.

Leicester were relentless, playing like champions, with the intensity of their pressing forcing mistakes, but Ben Chilwell was sent off for two bookable offences in quick succession, leaving the visitors down to 10 men with 22 minutes remaining.

Yet still Chelsea, who had won their previous seven Premier League home games since September’s loss to Manchester City, could not break the Foxes down as the Blues followed stalemates with Norwich and Arsenal with a third in a week.

Crystal Palace took a further step towards Premier League survival with a 1-0 victory over Burnley which extended the visitors’ winless run to seven games.

The Clarets climbed to fourth with victory over Stoke last month but have struggled to impress since, and came up short again against a Palace side missing eight first-team regulars.

A second goal in two games from Bakary Sako was enough to secure the three points for the Eagles that would take the hosts up to 12th, and into serious contention for a top-10 finish having looked like near-certainties for relegation a few weeks ago.

Manuel Lanzini fired a second-half double as West Ham won 4-1 at Huddersfield for their biggest win of the season.

Lanzini, whose only previous goal this campaign was in November, scored twice in five minutes during an impressive second period for the Hammers, who climbed above Huddersfield in the Premier League table.

Mark Noble’s opener for the London side was cancelled out before the interval by Huddersfield midfielder Joe Lolley, but the outstanding Marko Arnautovic struck within 30 seconds of the restart and then provided assists for both Lanzini’s efforts.

Joselu came off the bench to drag Newcastle out of even deeper relegation trouble and deny Swansea a major boost to their Premier League survival hopes.

The former Stoke striker stabbed home a 68th-minute equaliser just four minutes after his introduction to cancel out Jordan Ayew’s opener.

Newcastle dominated the first half, but squandered a series of chances and might have conceded a penalty before Ayew struck.

But on a day when defeat was simply not an option, they fought back to snatch a 1-1 draw which at least prevented bottom-of-the table Swansea from collecting three points for just the third time in 15 attempts.

The midfielder diverted the ball in with his arm a minute before full-time as Watford came from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw.

James Ward-Prowse had scored twice in the first half before Andre Gray pulled one back - and Saints were crestfallen when Doucoure’s equaliser was allowed to stand.

He stooped to nod into the net - but the ball missed his head and he swept it home with his arm.

Southampton protested long and hard to referee Roger East but to no avail, with a draw leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.

West Brom’s long wait for a Premier League win finally ended as Brighton were beaten 2-0 at The Hawthorns.

Jonny Evans’ early header set Albion on their way to halting a 20-game run stretching back to August, with fellow defender Craig Dawson heading in a second goal at the start of the second half.

The result will also have been a weight off Alan Pardew’s shoulders as it gave him that elusive first league victory since he took over as manager nine matches ago at the start of December.

Watford 2-2 Southampton: Abdoulaye Doucoure scores late equaliser

Show/hide article…

Abdoulaye Doucoure’s controversial last-minute equaliser rescued a point for Watford and saved their tribute to Graham Taylor from turning into a bitter wake.

Don’t be fooled by Watford’s second-half rally, which owed more to energy than finesse.

Head coach Marco Silva has now cobbled together 11 points from a possible 45 since Everton came calling and he fluttered his eyelashes.

While the pressure lifted, if only a little, on Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino, the ice for Silva – who has yet to make a signing in this transfer window – has become wafer-thin.

Before kick-off, fans formed a Dortmund-style Yellow wall of scarves in a colourful tribute to Hornets godfather Taylor to mark the first anniversary of the former England manager’s death.

But instead of unfurling a tribute worthy of their greatest manager, Watford sank to the occasion for 45 minutes.

They were not helped by the loss of influential midfielder Tom Cleverley to injury, but the Hornets were ponderous, pedestrian and pathetic.

Saints had already threatened before Shane Long’s low cross was only half-cleared and James Ward-Prowse, 12 yards out, had time to gather his thoughts, do the crossword, pick his spot and find the bottom corner beyond Heurelho Gomes.

Two minutes later, Gomes was required to sprawl full-length to claw away Long’s looping header and the Watford keeper back-pedalled to tip Wesley Hoedt’s speculative chip from 45 yards over the top.

But Southampton’s domination deserved a second goal, and on the stroke of half-time Long skinned Molla Wague, his low cross reached the unmarked Ward-Prowse at the far post and he did the rest again.

Booed off at the interval, Watford sent on benched skipper Troy Deeney – whose exclusion was a mystery in the first place – and there was an immediate improvement.

When Daryl Janmaat’s fierce shot was tipped on to the bar by Alex McCarthy, Andre Gray nodded home the rebound, his fourth goal of the season, and the Hornets were back in business.

Suddenly, the Saints were unsettled by Deeney’s directness but another strange decision by Silva, withdrawing goalscorer Gray, only seemed to diminish Watford’s head of steam.

Just when Silva appeared to have run out of rope, however, right on 90 minutes Deeney headed down Roberto Pereyra’s cross and midfielder Doucoure bundled in his seventh goal of the season – although there was a suspicion of handball about it.

Watford 2-2 Southampton: Abdoulaye Doucoure scores late goal with hand

Show/hide article…

At the end of a week which marked the advent of video technology in English football, this was the moment that might finally push it over the line and into regular use.

With Watford chasing this game in its dying seconds the ball looped over Southampton’s defence and Abdoulaye Doucoure was at the back post, raising his gloved hand to punch an equaliser into the net.

It was more boxing jab than clever finish; an incredible piece of foul play that referee Roger East and assistant Derek Eaton failed to spot.

With that, Southampton lost their chance of a plucky first win in 10 Premier League matches and Watford rescued a point to improve a recent record that isn’t much better.

Brighton vs Crystal Palace and Chelsea vs Arsenal might have trialled the virtual assistant referee in the cup competitions this week, but Mauricio Pellegrino was left to rue the lack of it in the Premier League here.

‘It’s clear,’ the under-pressure Southampton manager said. ‘I’m feeling like all my players in the dressing room. We are a little bit sad.

‘The last goal is something that surprised me. For me the level of refereeing is good in the Premier League but this is clear.

‘Everybody makes mistakes. At this level the problem is that you have a lot to win and lose and we are a little bit disappointed.’

It was something of a shame for Watford, too. Their outstanding fightback in this game, led by substitute Troy Deeney, will be largely forgotten among all the controversy.

They fell behind to a James Ward-Prowse first-half double as Dusan Tadic and Shane Long ran the show but then turned the screw in the second period with Andre Gray scoring before the late drama.

‘I don’t need to talk more about the (second) goal,’ Hornets boss Marco Silva said. ‘I think we deserved the result. It’s true we did well the second half but we did really badly in the first.

‘We didn’t put the right attitude or the right mentality in the first half. It was completely different second half.’

Watford, coming into this game on a run of seven defeats in their last nine in the league, were timid from the start and came undone through the fight of Long.

First, Southampton’s Irish centre forward battled away from Christian Kabasele down the right before charging to the byline and cutting back with Steven Davis and Ward-Prowse advancing.

The former provided a deft flick with his heel; the latter then had time to slide a perfect finish into the bottom-left corner.

Then, just before the end of the first half, Long broke free again. He roasted the chasing Molla Wague before looking up to see Tadic waiting. The Serbian star took the low cross into his feet and, sensing Ward-Prowse advancing over his right shoulder, tapped it across for the Saints No 16 to drive in for 2-0.

Watford were booed off at the break but Deeney, who says he is taking his time at the club day-by-day amid interest from Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, proved to be the catalyst of a turnaround.

The bulky centre forward came on in a change of formation and led the piling on of pressure, which eventually told when Deeney worked the ball across to right back Daryl Janmaat — his drive was tipped on to the bar by Alex McCarthy and Gray headed in the rebound.

This time the Serbian’s touch was more solid. He took the low cross into his feet and, sensing Ward-Prowse advancing over his right shoulder, tapped it across for the Saints No 16 to drive in for 2-0.

More boos followed for Watford at half-time and manager Marco Silva responded by throwing another forward on: Troy Deeney replacing Ben Watson.

But it still wasn’t coming together — a feeling summed up when Gray and Richarlison went up for the same free header, getting in each others’ way to waste the biggest chance to respond.

Still, they were trying. Deeney was a nuisance and gave Southampton something different to think about. His backheel into the feet of Richarlison would have provided a goal, had it not been for the heroic block of Ryan Bertrand.

It took until the final moments for Watford to find a path through again. Deeney headed Roberto Pereyra’s cross across the area, perfectly into the path for Doucoure to provide the finishing touch by any means necessary… ultimately using his right hand.

Cedric Soares even earned a booking for his protests — salt in the wound for Southampton. Bring on the VAR revolution.

Ward-Prowse at the double but Watford fight back

Show/hide article…

Having scored the winner in the Emirates FA Cup at Fulham a week ago, the Academy graduate was at it again with two well-taken goals as Saints stormed out of the blocks.

A revitalised home side pushed hard for a route back into the game after the break, halving the deficit through Andre Gray, before Abdoulaye Doucouré scored with a suspicion of handball in the very last minute.

Mauricio Pellegrino made three changes to his team following the cup success at Craven Cottage.

Defensive duo Wesley Hoedt and Cédric returned from injury to take their place in the back four, while Maya Yoshida was not fit to play and Jan Bednarek dropped to the bench.

Elsewhere, Sofiane Boufal also missed out as Dušan Tadić was preferred to the Moroccan to provide the closest support to Shane Long.

Saints showed some promising early intent when Oriol Romeu embarked on a surging run and inadvertently overran the ball into the path of Long, who had time to set his sights and be denied by Heurelho Gomes before referee Roger East curiously overruled his assistant and awarded offside against the Irishman.

Pellegrino’s men made the brighter start. Cédric fired over from the edge of the box before Tadić slid the ball in behind the Watford defence for Long, who did get a toe to it fractionally before the advancing Gomes, but the keeper did well to clear his lines.

Watford threatened for the first time shortly before Ward-Prowse struck the opener on 21 minutes.

Midfield powerhouse Doucouré escaped down the right and crossed low for Gray, who missed his kick, before André Carrillo’s follow-up was well blocked.

But it was at the other end that the deadlock would be broken to send the packed travelling contingent into raptures.

It owed much to the industry of Long, who accelerated to the byeline and cut the ball back to pick out Ward-Prowse, who took a touch and picked his spot with a low shot through the legs of the defender and just inside the far post from 15 yards.

Saints had the goal their superiority merited and were soon pushing for more.

Tadić left Marvin Zeegelaar on his backside as he twisted and turned before crossing to the far post where Long was waiting with a header back across Gomes, who was just able to get his fingertips to the ball and prevent his team from falling two behind.

Gomes was unexpectedly busy again when Wesley Hoedt spotted the Brazilian off his line fully 40 yards out, forcing him to backpedal furiously and tip a stunning effort over the bar.

After Højbjerg was booked for bringing down Tom Cleverley, who left the field injured before the break, Tadić showed his quick feet to set up another chance for Long.

This time the Serbian nutmegged Daryl Janmaat down the Saints left and found his centre-forward with a fizzing low cross. Long took a touch and looked set to score, only to be denied by a crucial last-ditch block.

Saints had completely controlled the game, and few inside Vicarage Road could argue when the visitors doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time.

Hoedt’s lofted pass forward released Long, whose pace was too much for the Watford defence.

Accelerating away down the left, he checked back to pick out Tadić in support, who showed brilliant composure to slide the ball on to the onrushing Ward-Prowse, who did not need to break stride in slotting home his second.

Watford boss Marco Silva used the interval to make his second change, as Troy Deeney joined Gray up front in a move that suggested the hosts were prepared to go for it.

Within minutes there was a noticeable improvement. Gray and Richarlison rather got in each other’s way from a right-wing cross, before the home fans called for a penalty as Hoedt and Gray grappled in the box.

After Roberto Pereyra curled one wide from 20 yards, Watford did get their goal.

Deeney rolled in Janmaat, who forced a brilliant save from the unfortunate McCarthy, whose tip on the crossbar only served to send the ball looping into the air and dropping invitingly on to the head of Gray, who made no mistake from four yards.

Pellegrino responded by introducing Mario Lemina for Steven Davis just after the hour, as Ryan Bertrand assumed the role of captain.

From then the Hornets’ momentum stalled. Højbjerg headed over in a bid to put the game to bed, but at the other end Saints coped admirably with an aerial bombardment that failed to carve out another chance until the 90th minute.

This time Saints failed to deal with the direct route, as Deeney nodded on and Doucouré beat McCarthy to the loose ball to force home a controversial equaliser.

Watford 2 Southampton 2: Abdoulaye Doucoure’s blatant handball denies Saints first win in 10 matches

Show/hide article…

Southampton were denied their first league win since November after Abdoulaye Doucoure bundled in a 90th minute equaliser reminiscent of Diego Maradona’s against England in the 1986 World Cup.

Saints, who had led 2-0 at the break after James Ward-Prowse’s goals, were furious and surrounded the officials after the goal and at full time, with this result keeping the pressure on their manager, Mauricio Pellegrino.

“It surprised me because for me the standard of the referees of the Premier League is good but everyone can make mistakes,” he said graciously.

“Obviously my feeling is like all my players in the dressing room. I don’t remember many chances for them. We are a little bit sad because even in the second half when Watford, they tried to push us, I think most of this time we played well.”

Watford 2-2 Southampton: Abdoulaye Doucoure scores late equaliser with his hand

Show/hide article…

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse scored twice for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side in the first half (20, 44) but Andre Gray pulled one back for Watford just before the hour mark, before Doucoure levelled things up in the last minute, stooping to head home but sweeping in with his arm.

Southampton’s protestations to referee Roger East were lengthy but to no avail, with a draw leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.

Ward-Prowse’s first goal came thanks to determined work from Shane Long down the right who pulled the ball from the right for the midfielder to calmly slot home.

Southampton centre-back Wesley Hoedt almost made it 2-0 in the 26th minute when he decided to try and chip Heurelho Gomes from 40 yards but the goalkeeper just about got back in time to divert the ball away.

The home team were second best in every department, summed up by Daryl Janmaat losing a 50-50 with Tadic, allowing the Southampton man to cross for Long who would have scored if it wasn’t for a last-ditch block from Marvin Zeegelaar.

It was Long’s work-rate which brought the second goal as he raced onto a clearance, before playing in Dusan Tadic who held the ball until Ward-Prowse reached the area and the laid it off so he could get his second of the match.

Troy Deeney’s half-time introduction made Watford look a more dangerous side, and he set up Janmaat for a shot which Alex McCarthy had to tip onto the bar, only for Gray to head home the rebound from three yards out.

After considerable pressure from Watford, Doucoure finally made it pay when he latched onto a chipped pass from Deeney in the 90th minute, but the midfielder missed the ball with his head so palmed it beyond the onrushing Alex McCarthy.

There were protestations aplenty from Southampton and Doucoure looked sheepish as he ran off to celebrate after a quick look at the assistant referee but the goal stood.

The draw means Southampton, who sit in 16th place, have not won in the last 10 games, while Watford are in 10th.

Marco Silva: “Everybody has seen the goal, I don’t need to talk about the goal. Something can happen, and this season we’ve had other moments when the decisions are against us, but that is football. I understand Southampton, I understand their manager, they are unhappy like I was more than one time in games when mistakes are against us.”

Mauricio Pellegrino: "It [the handball] is so clear, the linesman is there but there’s nothing we can do. We expect this that they will react, especially with direct play with the strikers but I think we controlled well much of the time but with this direct action we didn’t have this fortune that you need to win this type of game

"For us it is difficult to analyse as they didn’t create many chances. But for long ball, second ball, they’ve got strong players and every single action is dangerous.

“We made a couple of mistakes in the second-half but even with this we didn’t deserve to draw this game.”

In a week’s time, Watford will travel to face Leicester.

Southampton have a tough task ahead of them on Sunday, January 21 when they host Tottenham, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

The Watford skipper was inspirational after he came off the bench at half-time. Deeney brought increased physicality and guile in the final third as Watford played with two strikers in the second half. He was involved in both goals even if the second one should not have stood.

Pellegrino aggrieved by Watford injustice

Show/hide article…

Pellegrino’s men produced a fluid first-half performance capped by a brace from James Ward-Prowse to lead 2-0 at the interval.

Saints looked on course for three points even after Andre Gray halved the deficit, but Abdoulaye Doucouré clearly handled in scoring a cruel last-gasp equaliser for the Hornets.

“You want there to be justice for everyone, but today was an injustice for us,” said the boss.

“I thought we played a really good first half. We showed we can be dangerous in open play on the counter-attack, and in defence for most of the game we played well.

“When you are winning 2-0, you expect your opponent to play very direct and it’s something that’s difficult to defend because maybe they are a little bit better than us in this aspect.

“You have to put an extra body in front of the back four, which means you have one less body in front of them.

“We did ok – most of the time we did well because I don’t remember many chances for Watford in the second half, just long balls and some crosses.

“But we didn’t have the good luck that you need to win.”

Ward-Prowse: A frustrating afternoon

Show/hide article…

Ward-Prowse’s first-half double looked to have set Saints on their way, but the hosts fought back and levelled at the death with a controversial Abdoulaye Doucoure strike, which struck a hand.

“At first it didn’t look like handball. From my position it’s hard to see his right arm but having seen it again in the changing room it’s clear,” Ward-Prowse reflected.

“It’s frustrating because having dug in deep late on in the game and a refereeing decision cost us, that’s disappointing.

“There’s been a lot of talk about the VAR system this week and whether that is something that can help eradicate those sort of things we’ll have to wait and see.

“We can’t change that now. We started the game very well and the second-half didn’t match the first that we had.”

A superb first-half display was juxtaposed by the second, where Watford applied pressure to get back into the contest, something which Ward-Prowse says must be addressed.

He said: “We should have put the game to bed. The second-half has not been great for us lately, it’s been a bit of a trend and we have to put that right very quickly.”

“We have to change our mentality from protecting what we’ve got to improving on what we’ve got. That comes with confidence but it needs to be addressed quickly as it’s cost us in the last few games.

“These are the times you have to stick together. We played some good stuff today but equally we did some bad things and we have to work on that.

“When things are going badly we have to show our character and desire to win a game and I think we did that right up until the last minute.”
