Redmond: “We didn’t believe how attacking we could be”

Show/hide article…

NATHAN Redmond believes that Saints “didn’t believe how attacking” they could be and were “hesitant” last season under Claude Puel.

But, with new boss Mauricio Pellegrino instilling “belief and confidence” in to the side, the wideman is sure the goals will soon flow - and has set himself a lofty target.

Saints scored just 17 goals in 19 home games last season - only relegated Sunderland struck fewer- and were often accused of having a negative style under Claude Puel.

“We might have been a bit hesitant at times,” admitted the 23-year-old about Puel’s reign. "I know I was especially.

"There was a period at the start of the season when I was a bit more free flowing and had a stint towards Christmas when I was a bit hesitant.

"But then when I got in to the England squad, I got back to being free flowing and towards the end of the season after the cup final I was hesitant again.

"It was just that word hesitation and as a whole we just didn’t really believe how attacking we could be. That was down to a lot of things.

“But the new manager has come in, he’s got a new style of play, way of pressing and everyone has bought in to it.”

Saints got 29 shots away in their Premier League opening day draw against Swansea, but weren’t able to find the net.

It meant the team set a club-record six home games without scoring.

However, the team are not thinking about their failures in front of goal and don’t consider it something to be worried about.

“I’m still confident our strikeforce and our team can score goals,” the England international said.

“You’ve seen on Saturday Maya (Yoshida) wasn’t able to put two or three chances away, but on another day he might have scored them.”

“We may not have scored at home since April, but we finished 8th and went to a cup final,” he added. "That achievement doesn’t get mentioned.

"It’s just another thing for people to read into. It’s not anything we’re thinking about.

“If we get the chances we try our best to score, but we’re still just one game in to the season.”

Redmond, who top-scored in the Premier League for Saints with seven goals last term, has set himself a few target for the campaign ahead.

“I always aim for double figures in terms of goals,” he said. "I’ve got better each season in terms of scoring and I want to improve my all round game and contribute to the team.

"The manager’s pressed on about bringing more to the team and just trying to tweak parts of my games, which are there but need to be improved.

“His man management and the way he wants to do that with every player is important.”

So what has Pellegrino asked Redmond to change in his game?

“Just about a lot of forward runs,” he said. "It’s just being more positive and believing that the ball will come to me when running in to the box if someone else is crossing the ball.

"It’s just believing that if I get the ball in the box, I will score. There’s a lot of things that need tweaking.

“No player is perfect and no player should stop learning, so I’m open-minded and that’s just how I’m seeing it.”

Which Premier League club holds the highest record attendance?

Show/hide article…

Tottenham could break the Premier League attendance record at Wembley on Sunday. But what is each Premier League club’s highest attendance?

Spurs were granted permission to play up to 27 matches at the 90,000-capacity national stadium this season, while construction work continues on their new ground at White Hart Lane.

This weekend they could surpass the Premier League record of 76,073, set when Manchester United hosted Aston Villa at Old Trafford in January 2007.

In 2016/17, 85,011 fans watched Mauricio Pochettino’s side take on Monaco in the Champions League at Wembley. That was the highest attendance for an English club at home but that total could be beaten when London rivals Chelsea visit Spurs live on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday.

But what are the top attendances other Premier League clubs have recorded?

Here, we count down all 20 current Premier League clubs’ record home attendances. Read on to see who comes out on top…

Chelsea step up bid for £20m Cedric Soares

Show/hide article…

Chelsea have finally decided to follow up their interest in Southampton right back Cedric Soares.

Standard Sport first revealed that the 25-year-old was on Chelsea’s wish-list for the right wing back position back in April.

However, the Blues have prioritised other positions since then and have brought in Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Willy Caballero.

Chelsea hope to add another four more players to their squad before the transfer deadline, although coach Antonio Conte would ideally like to strengthen both wing back positions as well as other areas of the pitch.

They have been linked with Valencia’s Joao Cancelo and Paris St Germain’s Serge Aurier in recent weeks for the role on the right, but both deals have complications and Soares is under consideration once again.

Soares is seen as a cheaper option, even though he still has three years left on his contract and was part of Portugal’s squad that won Euro 2016 last year.

The champions think Southampton could be persuaded to agree a transfer for between £15-£20m.

Southampton have just been taken over by Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng so are under no pressure to sell any players.

However, it is understood that the end of protracted takeover talks at St Mary’s Stadium will help rather than hinder Chelsea’s chances.

The Blues are on good terms with Southampton, which has also put them in a strong position should the Saints decide to sell rebel defender Virgil van Dijk.

Their former left back Ryan Bertrand is the third Southampton defender they have considered this summer, although the England left back is behind two players on their wish-list for that position.

Alex Sandro is first choice but their latest enquiry was rejected by Juventus, who continue to insist he is not for sale.

Southampton Women’s Under-21s recruiting

Show/hide article…

This summer the Netherlands hosted a record breaking UEFA Women’s European Championship Finals and interest in the women’s game is at an all-time high, with a peak audience of four million tuning in to watch England in the Semi final against Holland.

Southampton Football Club is also in an exciting period and in the process of building a strong foundation, from the bottom up, to support our longer-term ambitions of playing at the highest level of the women’s football pyramid.

Stage One –build the base with a Tier One Regional Talent Club (RTC)

Just over 12 months ago, via an open application process, we achieved a Tier One licence from the FA. In this our first year, combining the experience and know-how of the already established and reputable world class boys Academy programme with Lois Fidler’s experience of the elite end of the women’s game, we have been able to make huge strides.

Stage Two – extend the RTC adding an Under-21 team, offering a female player pathway

The next step was to evolve our female player pathway to include a Professional Development Phase (Players over the age of 16+) aligned to our long-term ambition of developing home grown talent we are continuing the process of recruiting an Under-21 team. This will see a number of graduates from last season’s Under-16s RTC squad combined with a number of new recruits.

The Under 21s will very much follow the model of the RTC. An experienced team of high quality practitioners across multiple disciplines including physical preparation coaches, physiologists, performance analysts, coaches, and physiotherapists will drive the programme. Our aim is to provide a high performance environment that supports turning potential into excellence.

This phase is an integral stepping-stone for our longer-term ambitions to have a women’s senior Southampton FC representative side competing at the highest level of the women’s game, and as we are not currently at that stage it affects the competitive games programme available to us in this our first year (2017-18 season). To overcome this challenge we are actively working with The FA on a bespoke competition programme for next season. We anticipate to be part of a pilot supported by The FA that will potentially see us competing with teams across a variety of different platforms. Part of this will see us competing in Division One of the Hampshire County Women’s League.

At this stage, we recognise that our games programme for 2017/2018 is not where we want it to be, and we are therefore working hard to find a short-term solution. We very much hope to alleviate this by producing and delivering a high performance training environment, which includes increasing contact time with players; accessing the training facilities at Staplewood Training Ground, and providing a rounded player development model that drives performance and pushes potential.

If you would like to join and be an integral part of an exciting new era of women’s football at Southampton Football Club please register your interest here.

Please note that if you are already registered or signed with a club for the 2017/2018 season, we will need to seek permission from the club secretary to make formal contact with you as per FA Standard Code. This can take up to 7 days.

The Inside Track: West Ham

Show/hide article…

Ahead of Southampton’s next Premier League game, we got the lowdown on their opponents from Dave Evans, the West Ham correspondent for Recorder Newspapers.

Who have been the big arrivals this summer?

West Ham have splashed the cash this season and, by the time the transfer window closes, they may well have broken their club-record fee twice.

Experience has been the key for Slaven Bilić and the board this time round after the disappointment of last summer’s business, and none come more experienced than Pablo Zabaleta.

The former Man City man has won just about everything in his time and he will fill that gap at right-back, which was troublesome last term.

Joe Hart has come in on a season-long loan and, though Adrián will contest the number one spot, it is likely to be the England keeper who gets the nod.

Javier Hernandez is certainly an exciting signing and, at just £16 million, something of a bargain as well. The former Man United striker moves to West Ham from Bayer Leverkusen and you can see him being a great success.

West Ham shelled out a club-record £24 million to bring Marko Arnautović from Stoke City. The Austria international certainly knows the Premier League and his versatility playing up front or on the wing, could be vital.

The Hammers were also hoping to sign William Carvalho for a new club-record £30m in time for this clash.

What are the expectations this season?

Expectations are always high with West Ham and the arrival of some exciting new signings has exacerbated that.

Last season they had the problems of a new stadium, the Dimitri Payet issue and a host of injuries to contend with and so finishing 11th was something of a success.

But the board and the fans will be looking for the team to push on this term and gaining a European place is the goal.

What did you learn from the opening weekend?

We learned that you can’t take on a Manchester United side when your key players are missing.

Michail Antonio, Cheikhou Kouyate, Manuel Lanzini and Andy Carroll were all out injured and, when you couple that with defensive errors, there was only ever going to be one winner.

United look as if they will be in the title race, while West Ham were left to lick their wounds and get ready for this game, with one or two of those players back.

What sort of style of play do you expect from them?

West Ham often play a counter-attacking game away from home and that seems likely to be the road they go down once again.

Having been thumped at home against the Saints last season, they bounced back to win at St Mary’s, with one of their better displays.

The manager is likely to make one or two changes, but he is unlikely to change his style and so they are set up to try and hit Southampton on the break.

Who will be their key men this weekend?

Antonio is likely to return, and his pace and trickery could be the key to the game, hurting Southampton on the break.

The Saints usually create chances against the Hammers, so Joe Hart will also hope for a better day than he suffered on his debut at Old Trafford, where he let in four goals

If he plays, then Manuel Lanzini will certainly be a key. He is battling to be fit, but he is the main playmaker in the team and can run the game on his own.

Unfortunately, Carroll will not be fit enough to try and match the goal he scored at St Mary’s last February.

Jese Rodriguez becomes the fifth Champions League winner at Stoke

Show/hide article…

Stoke City have completed the season-long loan signing of Jese Rodriguez from Paris Saint-Germain, and the Spaniard’s arrival has brought with it an unlikely stat.

Jese has won the Champions League twice in his career with Real Madrid, meaning Stoke currently boast more winners of the European Cup than any other Premier League side.

The 24-year-old joins Bojan, Xherdan Shaqiri, Ibrahim Afellay and Darren Fletcher in having won Europe’s most coveted prize during their career so Mark Hughes can select from a squad containing five Champions League winners.

Stoke could have had a staggering seven players to have tasted success in Europe’s premier cup competition had they not sold Marko Arnautovic to West Ham and loaned out Marc Muniesa to Girona earlier this summer.

It is an unlikely statistic given the club’s standing in the top flight, with the Premier League elite currently left in their wake when it comes to Champions League medals within their respective squads.

Chelsea are next with four winners - David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Alvaro Morata (twice at Real Madrid) and Pedro (three times at Barcelona) having the trophy among their club honours, with the Blues having won it in 2012.

Manchester City currently have three players to have won the Champions League with Danilo and Yaya Toure having done so at Real and Barca respectively while Claudio Bravo was at the Nou Camp during the 2015 season, although he was not used in the competition.

Manchester United will look to go far in the competition this year under Jose Mourinho, but he can only look to two players - Michael Carrick and Juan Mata - for experience of past glories on the biggest European stage.

It is the same number as at Southampton, where Ryan Bertrand played for Chelsea in the penalty shootout success over Bayern Munich in the final while Oriol Romeu was named on the substitutes’ bench that night at the Allianz Arena.

The summer spree at Everton has coincided with them bolstering their own Champions League winners with Sandro Ramirez (Barcelona, 2014-15) and Wayne Rooney (United, 2007-08) haveing played roles in previous triumphs.

Arsenal have frequently faltered at the last-16 stage against sides more experienced in winning the competition, and the Gunners contain just one player to have lifted the Champions League.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech was at Chelsea in 2012 as part of Roberto Di Matteo’s unlikely success, meaning Arsene Wenger can call upon the same number of European Cup winners as West Ham and Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge is the sole Champions League medal holder at Anfield, while Arnautovic’s move to the London Stadium provides the Hammers with European pedigree after the Austrian won the trophy albeit in a bit-part role at Inter Milan (2009-10) under Mourinho.
