Preparing for Van Dijk exit? Southampton make £15m bid for Lazio centre-back Wesley Hoedt

Show/hide article…

Southampton have made a £15.4million bid for Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt, according to reports in Italy.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to England this summer after only making 21 league starts in Italy last season.

Leicester City and West Ham United have both registered an interest in the centre-back but, according to Calciomercato, it is Southampton who have acted first.

The Saints have reportedly put forward an offer of £15.4m and they are hoping that will be enough to land Hoedt.

Southampton are on the search for defensive reinforcements at the moment as doubts remain over the future of Virgil van Dijk.

The 26-year-old is being heavily linked with a move to Chelsea or Liverpool and he could leave before the transfer window closes.

Southampton FC news: Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao buys controlling stake in Premier League club

Show/hide article…

Southampton have announced a partnership with Jisheng Gao and his family.

The Chinese businessman has been in negotiations with the south-coast club for some time and will now be part of the set-up at the Premier League outfit moving forward.

Saints owner Katharina Liebherr confirmed the deal had been completed in a statement released to Southampton supporters on Monday afternoon.

It is understood that Gao has purchased an 80 per cent stake in the club but chairman Ralph Krueger, and other members of staff in place at St Mary’s, will continue to operate in their current capacity.

“I am pleased to confirm that talks to bring in a new partner to our club have been concluded,” said Liebherr.

"Following extensive and fruitful work, we are entering into a partnership with the Gao family and I am excited about what we will achieve together.

"Today is the start of a new and exciting chapter for our club. Mr Jisheng Gao and his daughter, Mrs Nelly Gao, with whom I have built a close relationship, share our values and ambitions.

"As a team, we will strive to build upon the strong foundation that is in place towards sustainable long-term success

“I would like to thank the passionate supporters of the club for their ongoing loyalty and faith, and I look forward to seeing you soon at St Mary’s. We March On.”

Gao, whose company Lander Sports Development had been in talks with Liebherr during last season, now wants to move the club further forward.

“I am honoured and humbled to become a partner of Southampton Football Club alongside Katharina Liebherr, who, together with her father, has been such a great steward of the club, its growth and success,” he said.

“Together, we have the passion and motivation to build on Southampton’s excellent progress in recent years as we look forward to an exciting next chapter for the club.”

Southampton, with new manager Mauricio Pellegrino at the helm, started the season with a 0-0 draw at home to Swansea on Saturday.

Southampton enter partnership with Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao

Show/hide article…

Southampton have entered into a partnership with Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao and his family, the club’s owner Katharina Liebherr has announced.

BBC Sport understands the Gao family have bought about 80%.

In January, Gao’s company Lander Sports Development said it had agreed a deal with the Saints, but the partnership is now a personal investment.

“Today is the start of a new and exciting chapter for our club,” said Liebherr, who will retain a 20% share.

"Mr Jisheng Gao and his daughter, Mrs Nelly Gao, with whom I have built a close relationship, share our values and ambitions.

“As a team, we will strive to build upon the strong foundation that is in place towards sustainable long-term success.”

Liebherr inherited Southampton from her late father, Markus, in 2010 with the club in League One.

She said both parties have “full trust” in the Premier League club’s chairman Ralph Krueger and his management team and support plans to follow the “Southampton way”.

Gao added: "I am honoured and humbled to become a partner of Southampton Football Club alongside Katharina Liebherr, who, together with her father, has been such a great steward of the club, its growth and success.

“Together, we have the passion and motivation to build on Southampton’s excellent progress in recent years as we look forward to an exciting next chapter for the club.”

English clubs Aston Villa, Birmingham, Wolves, Reading and West Brom already have Chinese investors, as do Italian side AC Milan, who were bought for £628m earlier this year.

In 2015, Manchester City also sold a 13% stake of the club worth £265m to a consortium of Chinese investors.

While Saints owner Katharina Liebherr has described this new investment as a partnership, the reality is that the Gao family - father Jisheng and daughter Nelly - are now 80% majority owners.

Day to day this investment is not set to create upheaval at the club; the current board and management at Southampton will continue to run the club and I do not expect Saints to veer far from the path they have been on.

The Gao investment will of course have been discussed at length by Katharina Liebherr, who will have done all she can to protect the club and to make sure the Gao family have the club’s long-term interests at heart, like she and her father Markus have had.

But she has brought this investment in to strengthen the club financially and to take it further than she feels she is able to on her own. She has done this to keep the club moving forward, albeit I suspect in a measured way, not with a sudden splashing of cash.

Her legacy as sole owner is easy to see - two promotions saw her finish what her father started in 2009, the revival of Southampton FC from near extinction.

But she has done more than that. She has led a club in a dignified way without once feeling the need to justify herself publicly, she has led a business that has thrived on bettering players, and she has turned Saints into a consistent top-half Premier League club.

The Gao family have an incredible platform from which to build. The next chapter for Saints, Chinese ownership, will be fascinating to see.

Southampton staff told it’s ‘business as usual’ after buyout by Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao

Show/hide article…

Southampton staff have been told that it will be “business as usual” following a buyout of 80 per cent of the club by the Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao which takes ultimate control out of the hands of Katharina Liebherr, whose family have overseen the remarkable St Mary’s renaissance.

The deal to sell around £210 million of the club finally went through on Monday after weeks of delays in transferring the money out of China in order to complete what amounts to a change of ownership. Gao has bought the stake as an individual rather than through his company Lander Holdings, and Liebherr will remain as part of the ownership structure.

The question over Virgil Van Dijk’s future will continue to be asked but as things stand, Southampton are adamant that nothing changed in that regard. The Dutch defender has been told that, despite his request, he will not be permitted to leave the club in this transfer window, a strategy that has been pursued with the sale of Liebherr’s stake, inherited from her late father Markus, in mind.

Van Dijk, who asked to be allowed to leave this month, had suffered from a virus at the end of last week having previously been training separately from Mauricio Pellegrino’s first team squad. He and the rest of the squad were expected in for training later on Monday after a day off following the 0-0 draw with Swansea at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Why the Virgil van Dijk transfer saga has just taken a dramatic new twist

Show/hide article…

Southampton have today announced that there has been a change to their ownership structure, but insisted that it will be business as usual on the south coast.

Saints owner Katharina Liebherr confirmed that a deal with Chinese father-daughter duo Jisheng Gao and Nelly Gao has been completed, with reports claiming the pair will take an 80 per cent stake in the club worth £230million, report the Liverpool Echo .

But despite this change at the top at St Mary’s, Swiss owner Liebherr insists Ralph Krueger and the management team, which includes Les Reed who is a key player in their transfer negotiations, retains full trust of both herself and the Gao familiy.

That seems to dampen hopes of boardroom instability at St Mary’s surrounding the investment, which could have aided Liverpool’s pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton had threatened to report the Reds to the Premier League over the summer because of an alleged illegal approach to their Dutch defender.

Liverpool remain keen to sign van Dijk and are waiting for an indication Southampton are willing to sell.

The Saints insist van Dijk is not for sale despite the player’s transfer request last week.

In a statement announcing the deal, Liebherr also reiterated the club’s intention to build, rather than dismantle, the current side.

“I am pleased to confirm that talks to bring in a new partner to our club have been concluded,” it reads.

“Following extensive and fruitful work, we are entering into a partnership with the Gao family and I am excited about what we will achieve together.

“Today is the start of a new and exciting chapter for our club. Mr Jisheng Gao and his daughter, Mrs Nelly Gao, with whom I have built a close relationship, share our values and ambitions.

“As a team, we will strive to build upon the strong foundation that is in place towards sustainable long-term success.

Saints fans react to Chinese takeover

Show/hide article…

Chinese businessman Jisheng Gao has entered in to a “partnership” with Katharina Liebherr, having bought an 80 per cent stake in Saints for around £210m.

It’s news that Saints supporters will hope means fresh investment in to the squad will take place and provide a bright new future for the club.

Here are how the St Mary’s faithful are reacting on social media:

On the Daily Echo’s Facebook account fans were also reacting:

Jason Petley: “I hope this will push us forward but my only concern is the Chinese have invested before in English football and it hasn’t gone well up to date.”

Jason Bull: “Great news, lets get some decent investment and spend some cash on a quality striker who knows where the net is.” Paul Morgan: “Do they have strikers in China?”

Alan Clowes: “Dip your hand in your pockets now . Diego Costa is looking for a new home haha”

Richie Taylor: “This is worrying times no clarity at all”

Meanwhile, on the Daily Echo message board:

Ian Byrne: "Well I’m happy… We were going nowhere under Liebherr, she kept our club stable but had no intention of trying to push our club to the next level.

"I would rather roll the dice with new owners and see where it takes us rather than settle for mediocrity.

"If the Chinese have good intentions for our club, this is a great move… If not then we will recover in time.

“Only time will tell”

NewForestStu: “Have to say i have serious reservations about this, but then again, perhaps this might be why our stance has changed wrt Virgil etc. Fingers crossed this works out, but i have to admit i am more worried about this than had we of stayed with Kat in total control. Open to the elements now that is for sure.”

St Forlife: “Well I guess I am in 2 minds. On the one hand we have a new majority owner and time will tell to see where this takes us. Could be positive could be negative. On the other another far eastern owner does concern me given that to him we are simply an asset and a way of channelling his wealth through it and have some ‘sterling’ denominated wealth. I can’t see him throwing money at us given that I imagine he’d as soon buy any premier club that was well financed already and without debt. Will he use the club to continue the buy low sell high business plan - but start to withdraw the profits as dividends? Or will he be looking to grow the clubs ambitions? Who knows I guess is the answer but I time will tell I suppose!!”
