Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton status unchanged, says Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed Virgil van Dijk’s status as a Southampton player remains unchanged, and the defender will play no part in Saturday’s game with West Ham.

Van Dijk has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer, with Liverpool pursuing a deal before dropping interest after Southampton reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea and Manchester City are also targeting the defender, who submitted a transfer request at St Mary’s on August 7, though Southampton maintain he is not for sale.

“Nothing has changed - it is the same as last week,” Pellegrino said speaking prior to Saturday’s game at home to West Ham.

“For that reason, I have nothing to say, he won’t be available to play.”

Southampton’s uncertainty over the 26-year old’s future has forced them to consider potential replacements, and Sky sources reported on Wednesday the Saints are in talks to sign Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt.

The Netherlands international has impressed for the Serie A side since moving from AZ Alkmaar in 2015, scoring three goals in 21 appearances last season.

Sky in Italy understand Southampton have made a £15.5m offer for the centre-back but Pellegrino refused to confirm the deal had been agreed.

“I know the player, but I will not talk about the market,” he added.

"When you sign and you pay the player is for you, before that I have nothing to say.

“Right now, as you know, we have to be ready for a player to help us in the back four.”

Southampton set to sign Wesley Hoedt and could keep Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton are understood to be closing in on the capture of Holland defender Wesley Hoedt from Lazio.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to rule out a deal for Hoedt, while the St Mary’s outfit are said to have lodged a £15million bid for 23-year-old, who has been capped four times.

Southampton continue to insist they can retain wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk, despite the Dutchman 26-year-old continuing to agitate for a move to Liverpool.

When quizzed on Hoedt, Pellegrino replied: 'I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it, a negotiation isn’t 80 per cent or 90 per cent, the negotiation is either 100 per cent or zero per cent.

‘When he signs, a player is then for you to talk about, but before that I have nothing to say.’

Former Celtic star Van Dijk missed Southampton’s goalless Premier League opener with Swansea on Saturday, officially due to a virus.

Pellegrino revealed the centre back has now recovered - but will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s home league clash with West Ham.

‘The Virgil situation, nothing has changed, it’s the same as last week,’ said Pellegrino, of Van Dijk.

‘For that reason I have nothing to say on that. He’s okay but he won’t be available to play.’

The Gao family from China completed their takeover of Southampton by purchasing an 80 per cent stake in the club this week.

Katharina Liebherr will retain a 20 per cent investment in Saints, and Pellegrino hopes the deal will further stabilise the club’s future.

Chairman Ralph Krueger has also this week reiterated the club’s determination not to sell Van Dijk, leaving Pellegrino still confident Saints can retain their highly-rated defender.

‘When I met (technical director) Les Reed and Ralph (Krueger), they told me that they want to keep the best players on the pitch,’ said Pellegrino.

'And at this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch.

'The idea in the club was to keep the best players in the club.

'Ralph was clear, Les was clear, and hopefully we’ve got the same idea, that to progress as a club we have to keep our best players.

‘And if you’ve got the fortune to bring in another good player we’ll be stronger.’

Premier League paying price of falling pound on transfers

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs are paying more for transfers because of the drop in value of British pound sterling against the euro, but could end up with an end-of-season windfall, says Sky News Business correspondent Ian King.

The financial rewards available to England’s top-flight clubs has already meant a premium on transfers from abroad, but the decrease in the value of the pound has now resulted in reduced spending power in the euro zone.

The euro is 13-14 per cent higher against the pound than it was prior to the EU referendum, meaning Premier League clubs will have to pay more for European players.

Tottenham, who are yet to sign a player in the current transfer window, have already felt the stretch in their pursuit of Ajax’s Davinson Sanchez.

“Ajax are looking for 50m euros for him and, according to the Dutch press, a six per cent drop in the pound against the euro since Spurs initially started showing interest in the defender has put another 3m euros on his asking price - or the amount Tottenham are going to have to find for him,” says King.

Agents are part and parcel of almost any major transfer deal, and their demands could also drive up the amount Premier League clubs are paying out.

King adds: “A lot of agents fees are charged in euros because a lot of them are based in the Eurozone as well and that’s the currency they like to be paid in.”

The effects of the falling pound stretch back to last summer’s transfer window, when West Ham were effectively priced out of their pursuit of Michy Batshuayi.

“West Ham had expressed an interest in him,” says King.

“But immediately after the referendum David Sullivan, the co-owner of West Ham, said the drop in the pound against the euro had immediately pushed up the costs and ultimately he [Batshuayi] was too rich for West Ham.”

There could be further problems from within Premier League clubs’ current squads, as European players could look to receive their wages in euros for increased value.

“It’s not so much about them making more, but trying to preserve what they would have got before,” King says. "Clearly that’s an added cost to the British clubs who pay their wages.

“A player on £100,000 a week, prior to the referendum and the drop in the pound, that would have been worth something like 130,000 euros to a European player. Now, that only buys them 110,000 euros, so they will clearly be looking to defend their salaries.”

It may not be all bad news for the Premier League, though, with those in European competition potentially set to become even richer for reaching the latter rounds of the tournaments.

“Prize money for the Europa League and Champions League are paid in euros,” says King. "So if British clubs do well in those competitions then potentially they get to benefit from the strength of the Euro against the pound.

“A lot of sponsors for the Premier League come from the Eurozone as well, meaning clubs could get more of a bang for their buck as well.”

Fantasy Premier League draft tips: 10 players to target on the waiver wire

Show/hide article…

Alongside the normal Fantasy Premier League, there has been plenty of excitement over the new draft game.

It’s been a fun start, only slightly tempered by a delay in totting up points and league positions.

Now the 2017/18 season has started you’ll have a better idea of how your squad is looking and it’s quite likely you’re going to need to make at least one transaction – whether it be due to form or fitness.

So who should you be targeting on the ‘waiver wire’, here are just 10 players, who are more likely to be available to sign, who you could bring into your squad…

Andy Dunn: Southampton give football hope by finally standing up to the Big Six

Show/hide article…

He did not greatly trouble Luka Modric or Toni Kroos but on the basis of bossing Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang, Manchester United ’s signing of Nemanja Matic is already being acclaimed as the signing of the transfer window.

And the strangest one.

Gary Neville, for example, simply cannot get his head around the deal.

Reacting to a journalist suggesting Chelsea manager Antonio Conte simply did not want Matic, Neville replied succinctly.

Whether or not there were ulterior motives behind the champions’ sale of a player who was key to two title triumphs in three years, one thing is for sure.

How considerably remains to be seen, particularly in sterner tests than the one provided by a woeful West Ham, but Jose Mourinho’s Reds are better with Matic than they were without him.

That much is already clear.

So why, the world scratches its head and wonders, would Chelsea bolster a rival?

Maybe, just maybe, it’s because they are not overly bothered if United win the title.

They would rather win it themselves, of course. But if it’s not to be Chelsea, United is a decent alternative.

In fact, any of the so-called Big Six is just fine. Indeed, any of the cartel that has formed at the top of the Premier League food chain.

While the respective coaches might all be fierce rivals, the executives have formed a common bond. They have their own WhatsApp group, have breakaway meetings at Premier League summits, liaise via conference call.

If the executives had their way, trading players between each other would probably be commonplace rather than exceptional. If it would not cost him Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s Ivan Gazidis would probably happily sell Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City.

The ultimate aim of the Big Six will doubtless be to get a greater slice of overseas TV revenue.

In line with the collective principles of the Premier League, it is evenly distributed at the moment.

The Big Six. though, believe they are the star attractions overseas.

That is why as a one-off it might have been okay for business, but they wouldn’t want a Leicester City-style tale more than once every couple of decades or so.

In football, of course, there has always been a pecking order and buying the best players from upwardly-mobile clubs has always been a way of maintaining that order.

Chelsea took N’Golo Kante away from Leicester, Manchester United have taken Romelu Lukaku off Everton.

Which is why Ralph Krueger has emerged as an unlikely champion of those outside the Big Six.

The Southampton chairman said on Wednesday: “This summer, we needed to stop the perception out there that, 'OK, I want a player from Southampton… and boom!’”

That was not a perception. That was stone-cold fact.

But not now. Not with the stance taken over Virgil van Dijk .

You cannot help but have the tiniest smidgeon of sympathy for Van Dijk, if only because of Southampton’s prolific selling history.

At least three of the Big Six would have taken him, and you’ve got to be unlucky to be held to your contract by Saints.

There is still time for that to change, but Krueger’s insistence on Van Dijk staying seems absolute.

“The clubs that win championships have a continuity in their core and it was time for us to do that,” he said.

Southampton are unlikely to do a Leicester, but at least this is a gesture to show the big names at the top (Liverpool in particular, in this case) that they cannot have it their way all the time.

And for that, Krueger deserves a mighty pat on the back.

Premier League predictions: Lawro v Detroit actor Will Poulter

Show/hide article…

Did you see Burnley’s win at Chelsea coming? What about Watford’s draw with Liverpool? Here is your chance to predict the next round of Premier League fixtures - including any more upsets.

The Blues are back in action, of course, and BBC Sport’s football expert Mark Lawrenson thinks there could be more trouble ahead for Antonio Conte’s defending champions when they take on London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

“This is Spurs’ first Premier League game at Wembley,” Lawrenson said. “But it will not be quite the test for them that people were expecting when the fixtures came out.”

What do you think will happen? You can make your own predictions now - take on Lawro and other fans, create your own league and try to make it to the top of the table by playing the new-look BBC Sport Predictor game.

More than 120,000 of you have signed up so far, and Lawro is in the top 3% after scoring 120 points in week one.

Remember, though, it’s a marathon not a sprint - and he will be making a prediction for all 380 games this season, against a variety of guests.

Lawro’s opponent for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures is actor Will Poulter, star of new film Detroit.

Poulter is an Arsenal fan and went to the 2014 and 2015 FA Cup finals. He will be making his predictions about how the Gunners will get on against Stoke, and the rest of the weekend fixtures, on Friday.

“Stoke have historically been a bit of a bogey team for us and we have occasionally been bullied a little bit by them - but I can see Olivier Giroud coming on and saving us in the last 10 minutes,” Poulter told BBC Sport.

“Actually, you know what? I don’t think we are going to win it in typical fashion like that - instead I am going to go for a commanding 3-1.”

You can hear Poulter’s tales of following the Gunners to Wembley on Football Focus at 12:00 BST on Saturday on BBC One and the BBC Sport website.

A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth 10 points. The exact score earns 40 points.

Remember you can try to beat Lawro yourself by playing the BBC Sport Predictor game.

All kick-offs 15:00 BST unless otherwise stated.

Swansea got themselves a good point at Southampton on the opening weekend, and it felt like that was what they went to St Mary’s Stadium for.

I thought Manchester United played well in their 4-0 win over West Ham but the Hammers were poor - after United scored their first goal, it was a little bit too easy for them.

There are much harder tests to come for Jose Mourinho’s side, but I think they will get another win in Wales without too many problems.

The big question for Swansea now is how they cope without Gylfi Sigurdsson, who moved to Everton this week.

I suspect they will use the £45m they got for him to strengthen their attack with at least two signings, but they won’t have them in place in time for this weekend.

Watford’s draw with Liverpool last Saturday was a real rollercoaster ride with them twice going in front and then rescuing a point with a last-gasp equaliser.

The Hornets looked decent up front but obviously had some problems at the back, and Bournemouth will feel like they can hurt them.

The Cherries’ 1-0 defeat by West Brom was a little bit of a nothing game, not helped by the fact they conceded relatively early on because the Baggies just shut up shop.

That won’t happen this time around, and I am backing Eddie Howe’s side to get off the mark.

Burnley’s win at Chelsea was a fabulous result and they played really well to get it. Yes, Gary Cahill’s red card changed the course of the game, but the Clarets had started well and went on score some really good goals.

Despite their win at Stamford Bridge, I still think it is going to be a tougher season for Burnley than it was last year - but they would be happy with four points from their first two games, if they do get a draw this time.

With West Brom the visitors, I don’t see this one being a goal fest - and I am going to go for a draw.

Jay Rodriguez played really well for the Baggies last week and was a bit unlucky not to score from open play - I think he might change that at Turf Moor.

Leicester looked really lively in their defeat by Arsenal on the opening night of the Premier League season.

Jamie Vardy was looking particularly sharp and obviously they have got Kelechi Iheanacho waiting in the wings. I think they will just have too much firepower for Brighton.

After their defeat against Manchester City last week, this is another tough introduction to the Premier League for the Seagulls because Leicester are very strong at home.

Against Huddersfield, Palace looked like a team where the new manager has come in, changed the whole way they play and the players are not convinced by it.

It did not seem to suit them and it can hardly help Frank de Boer that he has not been able to make many signings - sometimes the players you have must dictate your tactics.

For example, Eagles striker Christian Benteke did not fit into Jurgen Klopp’s playing style when he was at Liverpool, and I think De Boer needs to keep it simple at the moment.

So, if you have got a 6ft 3in centre-forward like Benteke, then get people into wide areas and get crosses into the box for him.

Palace forward Wilfried Zaha is now out injured for a month too, and this feels like a good time for Liverpool to play them.

That is why I am backing the Reds to win - although I am tipping them to keep a clean sheet, which is quite a big shout at the moment.

West Ham are on the road again - they are starting the season with three straight away games because London Stadium is not ready for matches after hosting the World Athletics Championships.

That is not ideal anyway, but even less so after the manner of their 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.

Southampton made a better start with their draw against Swansea, but their problem was they did not really look like they were going to score despite having plenty of chances.

I think they will have more opportunities on Saturday because, like their ground, West Ham do not quite look ready. If Saints can take them, they will win this time.

It is going to be very interesting to see how Jese Rodriguez gets on at Stoke after his arrival on loan from Paris St-Germain.

Stoke looked a little bit rusty against Everton last weekend, and they definitely needed some more firepower in their squad. Jese has a big reputation. The question is, can he live up to it?

Arsenal only just got through their topsy-turvy game against Leicester and are not always great away from home.

They have also struggled at Stoke in the past - but they won 4-1 there in May and I think the Gunners will come out on top again this time too.

I loved the comments of Huddersfield manager David Wagner after his side’s win over Crystal Palace, which were along the lines of, ‘we have made a really good start but we are not kidding ourselves’.

I thought that was the perfect way to approach it, because he knows there is a lot more hard work to go.

Newcastle were doing all right against Tottenham until Jonjo Shelvey got himself sent off, and that was the end of that.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez will not want to start the season having played two, lost two, so I think they will be keeping things pretty tight.

A draw would not be a disaster for Huddersfield, though. That would leave them on four points, and they would only need another 36 to stay up.

This is Tottenham’s first Premier League game at Wembley but it will not be quite the test that people were expecting when the fixtures came out.

I just think Chelsea are all over the place, as we saw against Burnley last week.

They are without suspended duo Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas after their red cards against the Clarets and Eden Hazard is not ready to return from injury yet.

Pedro and Tiemoue Bakayoko are also injured and there is no end in sight to the Diego Costa saga either, with the striker still in Brazil. The situation with him is just absurd.

So I am going to go for a Spurs win - if I am right, then Chelsea really are in crisis, aren’t they?

Everton have made another good signing by getting Sigurdsson from Swansea. They have now brought in almost everything they need, apart from a centre-forward.

The Toffees got a point at Etihad Stadium last season with a classic counter-attacking display - defending in numbers and attacking on the break through Romelu Lukaku, who got their goal in exactly that fashion.

I’m sure Ronald Koeman will try the same tactic this time, but without Lukaku they pose a lot less of a threat.

Manchester City had to be patient when they faced similar tactics at Brighton on Saturday, and I think this will be the same because Everton are not going to come and attack City.

It might take time, but City will find a way through eventually.

On the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, Lawro got six correct results, including two perfect scores, from 10 matches, for a total of 120 points.

He beat both BBC athletics commentators Steve Cram and Brendan Foster, who scored 50 and 70 points respectively.

Cram got five results correct with no perfect scores, while Foster got four results right but with one perfect score. His score counts towards the guests’ total for the season.

Southampton striker Sam Gallagher wanted by Aston Villa, Birmingham and Derby

Show/hide article…

Southampton are in talks with a number of clubs over a loan deal for striker Sam Gallagher, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands Aston Villa, Birmingham and Derby have held initial talks about taking Gallagher on loan for the season.

Gallagher has not featured for Southampton so far this season and manager Mauricio Pellegrino is willing to let him leave on a temporary basis.

The 21-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 47 appearances last season while on loan at Blackburn, signed a new four-year deal at St Mary’s in August.

Gallagher represented Scotland at U19 level before switching his allegiances to England and he has since featured for the Three Lions at U19 and U20 level.
