Brazil too much for Yoshida’s Japan

Show/hide article…

In a rampant performance, Tite’s side ended the game as a contest in just over half an hour. PSG forward Neymar had already scored one penalty and seen another saved another before Marcelo’s thumping drive put them 2-0 up on 17 minutes.

Saints’ Yoshida curled a free-kick onto the crossbar from 25 yards via a slight deflection off the head for Fernandinho only for Gabrlel Jesus to add a third shortly afterwards, rounding off an excellent team move from close range.

Tomoaki Makino’s header gave the Samurai Blue hope on the hour mark but that was as good as it got for Yoshida and co. at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Virgil van Dijk: Kieran Tierney should stay at Celtic for now

Virgil van Dijk: Kieran Tierney should stay at Celtic for now

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk says former Celtic team-mate Kieran Tierney should be in no rush to leave the Hoops as his impressive progress continues.

Tierney, 20, reached another milestone in his fledgling career when he donned the Scotland armband in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Van Dijk’s Netherlands on Thursday night.

The young defender has also captained Scottish champions Celtic and is closing in on a 100th first-team appearance for his boyhood heroes after signing a new long-term contract last week.

Van Dijk was playing when Tierney came on for his debut at Dens Park in April 2015 and has watched his former team-mate’s career take off since then.

“He’s been doing very well and I think Celtic are very smart to tie him down for the next six years,” the Dutchman said. "It’s good to see him as the captain as well.

“I can remember that day he made his debut at Dundee. Since then he has been progressing every game.”

Van Dijk refused to speculate on how far the left-back, who impressed in central defence against the Netherlands, can go in the game.

“That’s not up to me but it’s good to see he’s making progress,” he said. "He was the captain of his country and that’s very special at 20-years-old.

“I don’t even know if he wants to go to the Premier League. Celtic is an amazing club for him as well and I don’t think there is any rush for him to leave.”

Tierney has been a key part of Celtic’s record 63-match unbeaten run in domestic football and Van Dijk believes their achievement has been underrated by some pundits.

On Celtic’s run, he said: "It’s amazing and I don’t think people really understand how big an achievement it is. They should get all the credit for it because it’s not something that happens a lot.

“I’m happy for the club and the fans, and also for the players of course. It doesn’t matter if it’s Scotland or anywhere else, it’s an amazing achievement and people don’t really understand how big it is.”

Steven Davis can help Northern Ireland turn things around

Show/hide article…

Last week Steven Davis picked up an MBE and Thursday night his 100th cap. The Northern Ireland captain would gladly trade them both for the chance to lead his country to the World Cup finals in Russia next summer.

That’s what Davis is all about. A selfless player and proud Northern Irishman who would always put the team before his own interests.

Exactly half of his 100 appearances have been made as captain, and he has emerged as the true leader of this team since making his debut against Canada here in February 2005.

Thursday night, there was the briefest of presentations before kick-off to mark the occasion and that’s just the way Davis would have wanted it.

There was far more important business to attend to, two years after he inspired Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 with two goals against Greece at Windsor Park.

This was a rather different game. Switzerland played with the swagger of a team that won nine of their 10 World Cup qualifiers, forcing Northern Ireland to hang on far more than they are accustomed to here.

At one point in the first half, a headed clearance landed at Davis’ feet in his own box and he launched it 60 yards downfield to give his team a breather.

It’s not what we have come to expect from a polished Premier League midfielder, but it was that kind of night for Michael O’Neill’s side.

Davis couldn’t exert his usual influence on the game, and Northern Ireland trail going into Sunday’s second leg in Basle.

The odds are against them now but they are still in it.

Davis, who has picked up just six bookings in those appearances, avoided another one that would have kept him out of the return tie.

With him there to pull the strings, Northern Ireland will always feel they have a chance.

Days Like These book on sale

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton players Francis Benali and Hugh Fisher helped launch Days Like These, a new book about the club, this week.

Former left-back Benali and 1976 FA Cup winner Fisher held a special signing session on Thursday to mark the occasion, greeting fans at the club’s Westquay Store.

Days Like These, written by official club historian Duncan Holley, details a wide variety of fascinating trivia, strange coincidences, record-breaking feats and bizarre stories that have taken place over the past 132 years, from Southampton’s inception up to and including the 2016/17 season.

It’s all laid out on a day-by-day basis, illustrated by hundreds of previously unseen photos, and costs just £9.99.

Days Like These is available at both the Stadium and Westquay Stores, while it can also be purchased online here.
