Le Tissier hails Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

The Italian has hit six goals in his first four matches, scoring on every single appearance so far, in what has been a sensational start to his time on the south coast.

His performances have drawn high praise from Le Tissier, who explained how much he has enjoyed watching him.

“We’ve signed a very good centre forward, in Manolo Gabbiadini,” he said. "He’s had a flying start and has been fantastic for us.

"It’s been there for all to see. His movement as a centre-forward causes defenders a whole lot of problems. They have trouble finding out where he is at times, with his sharpness in the box.

"That second goal in the cup final was a sublime finish. There’s not many strikers who are that sharp in the box to react that quickly to something dropping there, and I thought it was a brilliant finish.

"We’ve struggled for goals a little bit this season. Obviously, Charlie’s been injured, Shane and Jay haven’t been scoring as regularly as we’d have liked them to, so for a centre-forward to come in and hit the ground running has been a big lift to the team, and the midfield especially.

“If you’re creating chances and they’re not being put away, it gets a little bit frustrating at times and it’s nice to see the ball hitting the back of the net.”

Chelsea game to be rearranged

Saints had been due to visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday 23rd April, for a 2.15pm BST kick-off, but Chelsea’s victory over Manchester United this evening means they will now play in the FA Cup semi-finals that weekend.

A new date for the match will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.

Caceres’ remarkable run ends at Old Trafford

Show/hide article…

The Uruguayan played his second successive game for Saints under-23s as he continues to recover match fitness.

The 29-year-old has not played a competitive match since he appeared for Juventus in a Serie A contest against Genoa on February 2, 2016.

After making his Saints debut against Chelsea U23s at St Mary’s a week earlier, Caceres was again included in the starting line-up against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Caceres entered the game having helped his teams record eight consecutive clean sheets.

Last season Juventus didn’t concede a goal in his last six games for the club, and prior to that he had played for Uruguay in a 3-0 win against Chile.

After helping Saints to a clean sheet against Chelsea, it looked as if he would extend his great run as Saints opened up a 2-0 lead tonight.

But United hit back to lead 3-2 before Saints grabbed an 87th minute spot-kick leveller.

Boss Claude Puel must now be weighing up whether to start Caceres at White Hart Lane this coming Sunday.

Though Saints have been in impressive form going forward recently following Manolo Gabbiadini’s arrival, they have still conceded six goals in their last two matches.

Josh Sims put Saints ahead at Old Trafford after 16 minutes, collecting a stray pass from a home defender to claim possession just inside the penalty area before finishing past Kieran O’Hara at the Stretford End.

Alfie Jones doubled the lead shortly into the second half when he headed in from a corner.

But United hit back through Devonte Redmond (62 mins) before Demetri Mitchell (70 and 75) converted two penalties in the space of five minutes.

That wasn’t the end of the spot-kicks, though, with Ryan Seager levelling from 12 yards three minutes from time.

Bosses Martin Hunter and Raidi Jahdi fielded a side containing five players with first team experience this season.

They were Sims, Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed, Pierre Hojbjerg and Jake Hesketh.

An even stronger side had been fielded against Chelsea a week earlier, with Soufiane Boufal and Jay Rodriguez also getting run-outs. But those two were absent last night - almost certainly being required for the Tottenham trip.

There was also another start last night for striker Ryan Seager, who made two brief first team sub appearances under Ronald Koeman in 2014/15.

He has not played for Saints’ first team since, and last February suffered a serious knee injury while on loan to Crewe.

Gareth Southgate considers naming extra large England squad due to injury crisis

Show/hide article…

Gareth Southgate is considering naming a bigger than normal squad for England’s double-header against Germany and Lithuania because of a potential injury crisis.

England manager Southgate has been hit by a host of withdrawals and injury doubts ahead of naming his squad for the two games on Thursday.

He is due to have his final planning meeting on Tuesday and may decide that he has to name a large squad to take into account the fitness worries over a number of his players.

Tottenham Hotspur pair Harry Kane and Danny Rose are out, along with Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge. There are also concerns over captain Wayne Rooney and Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Southgate checked on the availability of Rooney with Manchester United staff by attending their FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea on Monday night. Marcus Rashford started the game, but is more likely to be in the Under-21 squad.

Everton’s Ross Barkley is certain to get a recall, but Henderson’s injury has left Southgate having to make checks on Jack Wilshere, who has started Bournemouth’s last two games on the substitutes’ bench.

Saints must end impressive record to inflict yet more White Hart pain

Show/hide article…

RESURGENT Saints are aiming to once again be Tottenham’s tormentors at White Hart Lane.

High flying Spurs have not been beaten at the Lane in 18 games in all competitions this season and are the only Premier League team unbeaten on home soil this term.

It is nearly ten months since Mauricio Pochettino’s second-placed men were last beaten at their traditional home ground.

That excludes their spluttering ‘home’ outings at Wembley in European competitions, which yielded just one win in four games and elimination from the Champions League and Europa League.

Spurs have been playing at the national arena in continental competition with White Hart Lane undergoing a £700m overhaul.

In all, only runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea have a better points tally as hosts this campaign in England’s elite.

Now Spurs face the very team that inflicted their last home defeat on them, which came all the way back in May last year, as Saints roll into town.

Ronald Koeman’s men defeated Spurs 2-1 in the penultimate game of last term thanks to a brace from Steven Davis as they surged to a record breaking 6th-place finish.

And, this time around, Saints have been handed a boost to their prospects with Spurs expecting to be without Premier League joint top-scorer Harry Kane, who injured his ankle in the 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall.

The England international striker has netted 19 goals in the league this term - 24 in all competitions, of which 14 have come at White Hart Lane.

With their attack likely to be significantly weakened through Kane’s absence, Saints might be catching the north Londoners just at the right time.

Claude Puel’s men are resurgent after back-to-back away league wins - in which they have scored four on both occasions.

Last time out Saints defeated Watford 4-3 in a dramatic match at Vicarage Road and prior to that they won 4-0 at lowly Sunderland.

And while Spurs must make-do without their top marksman, Saints won’t have that issue.

Goal-getter Manolo Gabbiadini will rock up to White Hart Lane having netted an extraordinary six goals in his first four Saints appearances.

Yet, this will likely be the sternest test the free-scoring Italian will face in his fledgling Saints career.

Spurs boast the best home defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded a miserly seven goals in 14 games.

That watertight defence is in no small part down to former Saints men Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama.

Alderweireld and centre-back partner Jan Vertonghen, along with Wanyama and fellow midfield shield Moussa Dembele, will put Saints’ in form attack to the test.

Since the change back to the 4-2-3-1 formation at Sunderland, Saints have netted ten goals in three games, with Gabbiadini, Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse forming a formidable attack.

That offensive spearhead will be attempting to make it unlucky number 13 for Spurs after Pochettino’s side have won 12 games in a row at their base in N17.

Kane’s absence is sure to be felt, although, during his ten-game injury absence from mid-September to early November 2016, Spurs were still a force to be reckoned with.

Without their leading scorer, they lost just twice in all competitions and remained unbeaten in the Premier League, beating Manchester City 2-0 along the way.
